A Closer Look At Tales of Zestiria’s Newest Character, Edna

By Sato . March 20, 2014 . 12:21am

Bandai Namco recently introduced us to the newest character of Tales of Zestiria—Edna, who is part of the Heavenly Tribe like Miclio. Famitsu shares more details on Edna, along with some details on the fighting styles of the protagonist Slay and heroine Alicia.

Edna is a young girl from the Heavenly Tribe who possesses the ability to use powerful earth elemental-based “Heaven Echo” Artes. Her pretty outward appearance actually contrasts with her personality, as she doesn’t often show much emotion and has a more mature personality. At the same time, however, she finds pleasure in using her sharp tongue to tease people.

There is an exception, though—while Edna is usually calm, whenever it comes to her older brother, it’s almost as though she loses herself and shows a lot of emotion.

The Tales of series is known for its simple controls that let  you pull off a variety of actions through the “Linear Motion Battle System”. While details on Tales of Zestiria’s battle system remain scant, Famitsu gives us a look at the protagonist Slay and the heroine Alicia in action.

Slay carries a ritualistic sword he found at an ancient ruin as his main weapon, and uses it to pull off swift attacks. In addition to learning fast and mobile skills, he’ll also learn a number of attacks with various elemental attributes.

His fighting style will involve hitting enemy weaknesses and powerful special attacks, as a versatile frontline fighter.

Alicia uses a spear that is taller than herself for swift attacks and hitting enemies all around her. Her attacks may leave her open to enemy hits, she’ll be able to coordinate her skills with her movements to keep herself at an advantageous position, while remaining at a safe distance.

Her orthodox skills and skills with dynamic movement will be put to good use with her hit-and-run style of combat.

Tales of Zestiria is currently in development for PlayStation 3.

A bro-con loli. And here I was hoping they were trying to move beyond the trope playbook. We shall enjoy it anyways.

    • AlphaSixNine

Glad they aren’t changing for the sake of “wide appeal”.

      • M’iau M’iaut

Not so much that as the first three characters seem to at least be doing something different with their said tropes. While her description is that of basically every bishoujo they have had. The aloof, slow to warm up and only later happy, loving loli. And it seems she is another glass cannon to boot.

        • AlphaSixNine

They’re just mixing it up in my view, which is totally fine for me!

        • I take it you’re not too keen on her so far. x)
I hate the other descriptor of her: “She dislikes and distrusts humans!!” SHE SURE ACCESSORIZES AND DRESSES LIKE THEM REALLY WELL.

    • DanielGearSolid

The term “tropes” should be illegal

It’s like Adam sessle(just an example) used it, and the Internet’s been running with it ever since

      • KingGunblader

What’s your issue with the word ‘trope’? It’s a real world, with a real definition. (i.e. a commonly used literary device)

…and Tales of is full of them, whether you like it or not.

        • DanielGearSolid

I’m not saying it in defense of the Tales of Series

And I didn’t say I have an issue with the term itself… In fact its used in the proper context in the guys comment

The issue I have is how much ppl are using the word so often now. Seems like they just found a new word on the Internet and just wanna show it off (not to say thats the case with this guy)

I compare it to a new song on the radio… Ppl like it, and the radio plays it over and over and over again. To the point where you’re just like “Ok, enough already”

          • Pyrotek85

I’ve noticed it too. It’s also being made to sound like a negative, when nearly anything is going to have them. How original is everything going to be after so many games and books have been published? Anything is going to fall under some trope or another.

          • kaotron

It really depend, between tropes and cliches. Tropes are just tools for story telling/writing(every story has them), but when tropes become too overused and predictable they become cliches but people tend to use them synonymously.

for example, a fictional character can follow the tropes of being emotionally stoic, with a tragic past and a dead family, is he original? No. Does that instantly make it a bad character? Not exactly, it all depends on the execution.

but either way edna being a loli, kundere, bro-lover kinda takes the cake though…

          • Pyrotek85

You’re right, but rather than actually making an argument for or against a character being cliched, some people are just going ‘lol tropes’, like that alone makes something bad.

          • I blame the website for making the word mainstream and for, literally, turning every design or plot point into a new “trope”. But it is a real word (obv.), and Tales titles really takes its meaning on.

          • Pyrotek85

Exactly, if you want to be specific enough pretty much everything that happens can be a trope.

    • kaotron

lol, that trope ship has sailed the second they revealed that she was a tsundere loli.

I’m pretty much playing tvtropes bingo now…

  • AlphaSixNine

    Kuudere FTW.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Ya but if the only one she warms up to is her brother — who must be a party or story-centric character for this to matter, that don’t help the MC none.

      • AlphaSixNine

That just makes it more fun and interesting to see. The normally cold to MC and only shows love to her brother, slowly turns around. I really hope they bring back the affection system from Symphonia and make it better. I’m loving but at the same time loathing it for making me choose between Presea and Sheena as my soulmate. :3

        • M’iau M’iaut

I am guessing she is Miclio’s sis. Which could make things VERY interesting.

  • s07195

I’m still wondering how a party is going to work into open field battles.

  • Soyeon

    so…older male character next? :)

    • That or a young male (AKA shota).
Though, It would be amazing having an humanoid dragon in the team.

  • lorelai4cuties

i hope they add new stuff to the fighting system like summons

    • Izzeltrioum

Actually, the very first title of the series introduced summons during casual combat (Tales of Phantasia). Then Destiny 2 came, making summons as Hi Ougis.
Only Symphonia and Eternia retained that trend.

If summons were to appear in Zesty, they will come in the form of Mystic Artes/Blast Calibers.

  • I’m guessing Miclio is her older brother lol. I’m liking the sound of their fighting styles, and wonder what else their going to add to the battle system.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Read the thread before posting please — I came to that conclusion first!

  • gustinex

So im guessing Alicia will be having the traditional swordie artes ? Hope Slay has a new set of artes or similar to yuri’s !

  • Loli Summoner

Hope there is gonna be a playboy/pervert dude :)

  • makubexnas

Now that it’s raining more than ever
Know that we’ll still have each other
You can going down under my umbrella
You can going down under my umbrella

    (Ella ella, ay ay ay)
    Under my umbrella
    (Ella ella, ay ay ay)
    Under my umbrella
    (Ella ella, ay ay ay)
    Under my umbrella
(Ella ella, ay ay ay ay, ay ay)

    – Edna post battle Quote.. and chorus done by miclio.

  • Yay, a new spear user.

  • KingGunblader

So Slay is your standard Tales swordsman, gotcha. Alicia seems interesting though. I’m going to guess that Miclio is a mage type.

  • Andar

Looks like we can finally confirm Slay as being left-handed. That said, he’s going to need a Luke Fon Fabre cameo costume now.

  • fairysun

    Need more Pascal-ish character !

    • Nitraion

      Maybe the remaining elements?
if there is i bet she is fire-type….

      • mike dickson

no she had no point to be in the rest of graces story but i liked her

    • Linhua

      … yes… more Pascal, please.

  • Kornelious

I kinda missed the affinity system in Symphonia letting you chose your soul-mate, I always strive towars the females interactions with the MC, but every girl falling in love with the MC is a little over-board.
Also, the combat reminds me of Graces, but looks a bit more interesting. And it looks like Slay might be a Magic Knight type character…I approve :)

    • Nitraion

Yeah after playing ToS HD (first time ever)
      lets pray they remember it

  • Nitraion

Well i suspecting that slay is kinda magic swordman type..
I want to see gameplay video already D:

  • beepboopity

Nobody will be spared from her wrath.

  • Kai2591

    Dat spear.
Alicia looks even more amazing now.

  • I thought she fought with a parasol, but it turns out she uses a spear. Lame. XD

    • Nitraion

      huh? O-o
Edna use parasol, alice use spear :?

      • Whoops! You’re right. I looked at the picture of Alice and saw the spear but didn’t put two and two together. ^^()

  • Yan Zhao

I barely even know anything about this game and I’m loving the cast a lot already. A good sign!

  • Roses4Aria

Everyone assumes she’s a bro lover, but it doesn’t say that. It just says she loses herself and shows a lot of emotion when it comes to him. Maybe she really, really hates him, lol. :)

    • DragKudo

      She has a brother complex

  • cj may

    pole dance artes!

  • Izzeltrioum

The environments look colorful. Also Day-Night transition cycle confirmed as well.

Combat might end up being Xenoblade but with real-time combat, or YS Celceta with a slightly slower pace.

    Make your bets.

  • CirnoLakes

Ah, the first character I’m really excited about for this game!

I knew that, as more characters started appearing, I would start becoming more excited for the cast of characters in this game. I really like her, she seems really interesting. I can’t wait to hear more about her and this game.
