By Spencer . March 30, 2014 . 11:35pm

cor-05As reported earlier, Corpse Party: Blood Drive is on track for July 24 in Japan. The PlayStation Vita horror game is a direct sequel to Corpse Party: Book of Shadows and takes place two months after the PSP game.  The story continues 5pb’s Corpse Party saga with Ayumi planning to use the Book of Shadows to resurrect her friends.

Corpse Party: Blood Drive has 3D graphics for the first time in the series, but 5pb kept the characters with a chibi style similar to the original game.

every main entry has so far my friend, so the odds are in our favor.

  • Jan Daryll Palanca

Not gonna bitch about the switch from 2D sprites to 3D. I’m just glad the exploration is back!

    • Kayriss Wins

I agree although for some reason I feel like the 2D games were more scary then the 3D here.

      • Jan Daryll Palanca

        IKR!?

    • Kumiko Akimoto

I don’t know it takes some of the scary away that book of shadows brought in.
The exploration I mean, after the initial shock it basically just becomes depressing while your going through the halls.

      • Jan Daryll Palanca

If you played and compared both CP alnd CP: BOS, you can instantly tell CP still hella Scary because you’re ‘exploring’ into the unknown! Accompanied by an awesome soundtrack, realistic sound effects and getting chased by fucking mutilated ghosts!? Oh,and the fact that you can see the scenarios rather than reading them and pushing your imagination on whathefuck is going on?!
Blood drive kind of combines dead patient and book of shadows!

        • Kumiko Akimoto

Umm the fact that you can’t see any thing and things look a lot more like they are described is way scarier then seeing a sprite and being scared the first time you encounter it and then knowing how to avoid it the second time and then just being frustrated with the game mechanics.
You get all of those things with BOS and it’s heightened because of the way it’s styled.
An open view of the scary kills it and from playing dead patient this will lose the scary fairly quickly.

          • Jan Daryll Palanca

I disagree, having visuals and exploration can add a lot more fear factor than just texts being thrown on your face. Imagine yourself venturing into the unknown with only a flashlight as your weapon for survival.(ala silent hill < perfect example!)
Your imagination can achieve a lot from reading detailed texts but that's not the corpse party that we all known and loved! This is how I see it:
CP – Survival horror with actual gameplay!
            BOS – Visual novel.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Corpse party is no where near silent hill level, in terms of scary and BOS had exploration and it even had a scene with a flashlight which was very creepy.
The visual novel first person exploration worked because you were given a frontal view of things, you couldn’t see what was coming from behind, in front or on the side of you.
When people describe that the hallways are very dark and they can hardly see anything, you could actually see that in BOS.

Corspe party with 2d spirest or 3d spirates are fine but it gets less scary after a while.
Not to say BOS didn’t but it was more because the bad endings and scares went down .
After a while exploring just gets tedious and by time it’s middle the story has gotten less scary and more depressing,

          • Jan Daryll Palanca

I only mentioned “silent hill” as a reference to how applying both visuals and exploration can do a lot more (and less tedious reading and explaining every little detail) than full written texts.
While BOS has some exploration,it doesn’t feel as engaging like in the first game. (It feels like you’re jumping from one room to another) and once you get inside a room,BOS gives you this lame ‘point and click’ searching mechanic.. (Dora the explorer anyone?) The sceneries are the same, while adding subtile noticable changes.the first person view was a given since they were using a similar exploration style found in most VN/Visual Novels these days so its pretty bland and uncommon, as far as exploration goes in BOS it gets boring fast. Sure for the first few hours you’d feel ecstatic about everything! But after an hour of exploration its starts to feel like meh ~ it’s not like something will be chasing you or there’s going to be a random battle or anything like that, it doesn’t add up to its fear factor knowing there’s nothing going on when you’re randomly exploring the place, feeling that there is just makes you a paranoid.
The number one issue that I have with BOS is the lack of important CG’s in certain important scenarios! I can’t see what’s happening and I’m being forced to use my imagination while being bombarded with texts! They should’ve added more CG’s for those or recreate those scenarios with the 2D sprites! That’s what makes it scarier, because you fear for those characters when you can see what’s happening to them! and detailed texts just isn’t cutting it for portraying the fear that you are about to witness.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

I thought the scene to scene exploration gave more fear then the 2d overview did. The rooms were also thoroughly creepier when you are locked in first person.
The rooms could have used more jump scares and such but that doesn’t lessen the fact that the first person worked better at being scared.

During chase scenes in the 2d sprite front even with cg of the ghost catching you it just gets old after you figure out how to avoid them.
and when the story loses it scary edge the mechanics just get tedious.
If this takes all of dead patients mechanics then you can run and even fight back.

I feared for those characters more in BOS then I feared for them in the original or blood covered.

Hell miss yui had the scariest chapter and hers was all text.

          • Jan Daryll Palanca

Well “to each their own” as they say.
I’ve said my piece and you have said yours
I like blood covered better, you like book of shadows.
I like RPG’s ,you like visual novels.
Personally, the reason why they chose blood covered/dead patient as basis for blood drive and ditched book of shadow’s style is quite clear that the majority who played CP prefers the survival horror style than the visual novel spinoff-ish..

          • Kumiko Akimoto

I like both visual novels and rpgs(corpse party isn’t even a rpg but ok) and I enjoy all of the entries in corpse party no matter their flaws,
They choose dead patient style because patient was the latest interest in the series there’s no proof saying that it was because people didn’t prefer bos.

I don’t mind dead patients 3d exploration but I can tell you know even with the settings being different between dead patient and original corpse party it’s going to lose the scary fast.

          • Jan Daryll Palanca

Blood covered had RPG elements (i.e health points, item inventory etc.) But that’s besides the point, and I only mentioned them for comparison purposes
I beg to differ, if the gameplay VN style was so preferable why didn’t they used that for blood drive? and there are proof that fans wants old corpse party back, they voiced out their concerns about the previous installments (BOS and sachiko bday) and they gave the fans dead patient, and since the reception/fan feedback were good they applied that same concept to blood drive. That’s as evident as far as CP fans can see.
5pb/mages admitted that they created BOS from scratch, its because it was team GrisGris who created the first game/blood covered, that’s why the sprites weren’t present on BOS and since their forte is making VN’s they went with that idea since they did a great job at it.(Stein’s gate, robotic notes etc.) And the fans appreciated their efforts but godamn we want the original CP back! and blood drive was born!

          • Kumiko Akimoto

They were barely used for anything but a standard game over they were just there to be there.
Action games have item inventories but you wouldn’t call that an rpg element. Mario has item inventories now. It’s still a platformer.

They didn’t choose it because dead patient didn’t have it. Dead patient didn’t have it because it was on the pc.

Also sachiko bday has pure vn elements and no exploration at all.

Cp is still cp even without the sprites or 3rd person exploration. Doesn’t mean that the 3d won’t kill the scary faster and the 2d exploration because tedious which kills it as well.

Even though BOS like all of them loses their scary because the story just becomes depressing towards the mid and end it still kept that atmosphere because you were forced to see what they saw. You didn’t have to imagine or pretend you understood how dark it was when the screen is actually pretty light.

I doubt the fans were the reason for the dead patient take for blood drive. It’s just simple “We need to use this because it’s the most recent entry”
They wanted to try something new with blood drive and it worked so they used it again.

Got nothing to do with fan thoughts on BOS.

          • Jan Daryll Palanca

Well dude/miss, it seems were just going in circles with this. Its either you misunderstand what I’m trying to say or we’re not on the same page. I didn’t say fans hated BOS therefore they created dead patient to make up for it. All said was most fans still prefers the first corpse party than BOS.
If team GrisGris were present for the development of BOS we won’t be arguing here in the first place.
(They would retain the whole feel, look and experience that the first game brought us.)
            And I 100% doubt a doujin company don’t take feedbacks from fans,(team GrisGris/Grindhouse)

          • Kumiko Akimoto

I never said that they did either.
I’m sure they take feedback but I doubt anyones thoughts on BOS has anything to do with blood drive being how it is.

what is wrong with her eyes

    • RichyGaming

Some soap got in her eye

  • GH56734

What’s up with the big “SAMPLE” watermark lately?

    • darke

That’s just the watermark the company places there on pre-production, unpainted samples so that just in case the ‘real’ production one comes back slightly different people who have purchased it won’t scream.

Of course, it still doesn’t stop the complaints, but at least there’s no excuse. :P

    • Kumiko Akimoto

Really? Are you just now noticing companies do that to the pre release stuff?

      • GH56734

Actually, yes. I saw a lot of pre-release announcements similar merchandise that are unmarked (notably, the Hisoka bed sheet -btw, wtf were they thinking with that one-) . So this is new for me.

        • Kumiko Akimoto

I’ve seen it on import sites and jp sites, I don’t know why that was hard to get.

  • Roberto

    spooky

  • Göran Isacson

Oh lord Mayu :( Seems like Ayumis mistakes are REALLY gonna come back to bite her in the ass…

  • Rose Spinoza

Hm. The figure seems to imply that more Yuka is incoming. …… depressing. (yeah, yeah, I know she’s popular in Japan and probably with the creator. But god damn her being a living bathroom-fetish-character is really offputting. )

    • ZnTxn

I find the way she acts and speaks, despite being 14 years old, more offputting. Those lines would be ok if they made her at most 10 years old, and I don’t want to mention the incest issues.
For me, that character is more creepy than the game itself.

      • Arcana Drill

I like to think that she isnt at the right state of mind cause of Heavenly Host, cause if not…. she is too weird.

        • DyLaN

Another theory is that her age was lifted suddenly to avoid pissing the rating boards up but that doesn’t explain why the other ghost kids get through it.

  • XiaomuArisu

    God those Nendroids are adorbs!

  • leingod

Hey, that looks strangely awesome…. and a nice evolution for the series! Hope XSEED picks this one up, too.

  • TheRealMalek

i really need to buy a ps vita…

  • Hau To

Man, I have a feeling the remaining survivors are going to get killed instead.

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

It’s nice to see one of the guys, ever since Blood Drive was announced, it’s been all about Ayumi and a bit of Naomi but nothing about Yoshiki or Satoshi~.

  • Kayriss Wins

Seiko figure or me no buy!… okay me buy anyways but will be sad without her.

  • Sapitntapit

How long are each of the CP games?
Been thinking about grabbing these for a while now.

  • Anthony Birken

Love to have the exploration back! I still believe in that 2D horror sense though~

  • Dan

are the figurines gonna be available in Canada???
