Google Put Pokémon Inside Google Maps For April Fools’

By Ishaan . March 31, 2014 . 1:03pm

Back in the day, people had honour. April Fools’ jokes were posted on April 1st, and no sooner. These days? Honour is dead, and it’s every man for himself when the downpour of April Fools’ pranks begins a whole day in advance.

Luckily, Google have enough honour to actually deliver with their April Fools’ joke. They’re collaborating with The Pokémon Company to bring Pokémon into Google Maps.

The catch is, while the prank video (above) makes it all look like a giant joke, there actually are Pokémon sprites to be found in Google Maps today. If you access the Google Maps app on your iOS or Android device, you’ll find Pokémon that you can catch. Just don’t expect it to look as grand as it does in the video.

I suppose I’m obligated to play around with this Map joke as much as I did when they did the Dragon Quest Maps a couple years back.

*sigh* wish they had specified which OS can use this… seems like my 2.3 Android can’t help play this minigame; and it could had been helpful if they made this also available on the web

  • celery

I totally wish this worked on Android…my Google Maps app is up-to-date and I can’t access this at all! It’s just a small thing but it’s really cute, and I like the idea behind it.

    • lunier

It does, go to search and press “Press Start”

      • celery

That doesn’t show up for me :c I’ve seen a few other Android users have this same problem, too.

        • lunier

That’s weird, I have a pretty old version of Android and I don’t seem to have any problems

          • celery

Well I’m glad it at least works for you c: I hope this problem can be fixed before the event ends, though.

The wait is finally over. It’s finally time for me to leave my mundane life behind and embark on a new journey… Into a world full of Pokemon to become the ultimate Pokemon Master!! Gotta catch ’em all!!

gaming companies shouldn’t do april fools stuff because most the time, it’s something cool like this, and we don’t WANT it to be a joke….

  • Spider-Man

April fools is the worst day for game news, movie news, relationships, etc. I’m going to stay home, web myself into a cocoon and wait until it’s over.

Google just gave us a glimpse of the future.

Turning our smartphones into Poke’balls. Brilliant. Even if this was an April Fools’ prank, this could’ve had some potential by going the next step of coming across another smart phone user and battle with him/her. Use micro-transactions to access the Item, daycare, and other facilities you would find in the games. Start raising your Poke’mon via smartphones. Who needs to wait for it to be day or night in game? Just go outside and start catching them all. With a smartphone, even raising your Poke’mon’s levels and abilities through the Daycare will be a breeze!

Year 2020, the next Poke’mon World Championship takes place via smartphones.

On the other hand, the idea of Poke’mon moving on from a Nintendo handheld system due to the real life version makes me feel a bit sad. >_<

But why, of all things to use for an April Fools joke, Pokemon?
Is it possible that this doubles as an experiment for an unknown real future collaboration between Google and the Pokemon franchise?

    • CirnoLakes

Imagine a Pokemon augmented reality game developed for Google Glass! You really could travel the world trying to become a Pokemon Master!

      • Kai2591

        I’d love to play that~

  • CirnoLakes

Seeing this makes me think of how great augmented reality may be someday.

Imagine a day when augmented reality is everywhere. And everyone has augmented reality glasses and contact lenses. And Nintendo makes a Pokemon augmented reality game, where every location in the world is transformed into the Pokemon world.

Pokemon is based on the real world, so it’s the perfect thing for an augmented reality game! With augmented reality reality glasses or contact lenses, you really could travel the world catching Pokemon and trying to become a Pokemon master!
