Ubisoft Got Yoshitaka Amano To Draw This Illustration For Child of Light

By Ishaan . April 7, 2014 . 11:31am

Ubisoft’s Child of Light development team teamed up with Japanese illustrator Yoshitaka Amano—known best for his work as character designer on the 8 and 16-bit Final Fantasy RPGs—to create a piece of art based on the game.

Child of Light is an RPG being developed by a small team at Ubisoft, and is inspired by fairy tales. The game is in development for PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation, PlayStation 4 and Wii U.

I still remember the first time I tried to play FFVI. When I opened the menu and looked at them character portraits I screamed, turned off the console and never touched the game again.

EDIT: Jesus H. Christ people, it was a joke. Yes, I hate Amano’s character design, but I played through VI once almost ten years ago. I would prefer a version with Nomura’s designs.

And Wesley, try not to get an ulcer because of this. Your lid blew so high it hasn’t come down yet.

    • Trinity

…is that a good thing or a bad thing?

    • César H. Sandoval

      Kids these days…

Hopefully he’s just trolling and not that ignorant.

        • chibidw

Hopefully you have a sense of humor and are not that boring.

          • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Quite. But I don’t take kindly to deliberate assholes, nor should anyone.

          • revenent hell

I’m a deliberate asshole most days………But I couldn’t agree with your statements here anymore so…

          • GH56734

Hey, it’s an opinion. A taste.
About art. Which may or may not please some people.

If it happens to be different than yours, do you equate it to being an asshole/ignorant?

          • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Not liking the characters drawn faces in the menu’s, which accounts for less than 0.001% of the game.
Yes, writing off a game based on that is fucking ridiculous. There are innumerable things that I may dislike about games, but something as insignificant as a picture which is an iota of what makes the game.
I hate Bioshocks character designs, but it is an amazing game, and my art preference has no weight on it being an amazing work of art. Seriously, if he isn’t trolling, people like him shouldn’t reproduce.

*Thus ends my rant at stupid people.*

          • Aleister Crowley

You’re using that word, trolling, but I don’t think it means what you think it means. Sorry I hit a nerve about VI, it was just a joke dude.

          • pimpalicious

You getting so upset because someone decided not to play a game you like is also ridiculous.

    • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Missed the greatest Fianl Fantasy ever made, and ever will be made sadly.

      • GH56734

Actually it’s a legit concern for some people. There are different tastes, and that one didn’t click with them. Last month I saw some people were discussing how to remove the portraits from the GBA version.

        • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

That is, in no way, a legitimate concern. That is a sad excuse.

          • MakoSoldier7

            easy there fuhrer

  • Six

And you can only get that artwork on a poster that comes with the EU-exclusive LE.

You’re breaking my balls here, Ubisoft.

  • Cheesy12

I’m not gonna lie, when the piece is shown at the end, she looks more like a “Child of Darkness” than a “Child of Light.” Still looks nice though!

  • XiaomuArisu

    Pre-ordered it~

  • ZEROthefirst

I think I’m probably going to be one of the very few here who knows Yoshitaka Amano better from his illustrations in the Vampire Hunter D novel series as well as Demon City Shinjuku instead of Final Fantasy.

    • Ash_Riot

I’m more inclined to his Front Mission work, myself.

I’m still trying to get over my butthurt from no US CE and then you go and post this article. I still really want that poster :(

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

With so many games I’m getting for my birthday, how am I gonna pre-order Child of-Wait, I just realised the only GAME closesed is in Northern Ireland and I live in the Republic of Ireland.

    Drat, drat and double drat!

    • yellowmage

Oh yeah, you guys had GameStop, didn’t you? Before they went online-only outside Murrka.

      • Stephen Mc Devitt

        Huh? Muurka what?

There’s a Gamestop in Letterkenny where I got the N7 edition of Mass Effect 3.

I looked at their online store and they don’t have Child of Light. A shame since buying redeemable codes in the UK region doesn’t work for the Irish PS Store.

        • yellowmage

Ireland has a separate PS Store? I mean, I know you guys use the Euro (something I honestly think we here in England should do, too, but that’s a whole other bucket of monkeys), but I thought that we and continental Europe were all one in gaming context.

Oh, and Murrka = America (mild accent-based slur)

          • Stephen Mc Devitt

Oh no, I mean European PS Store. Of course Ireland doesn’t have a separate one.

When I asked ones at GAME about the game codes they were selling, they said it won’t work in the RoI, sorta like this Ultraviolet-thing.

  • Darkwing7

Interest has been peaked, looking forward for more info.

  • Aoshi00

Is there an actual disc version for this even in Jpn? I’ve only seen pre-orders for d/l codes.

It’s always nice to see Amano’s amazing artwork and painting, most artists color digitally now.. I miss the days of FF made by Sakaguchi, Uematsu, & Amano :) I would like to see the El Shaddai artist at work too..

    • Wappuli

      Japanese version is download-only too.

      • Aoshi00

I see.. so it’s the d/l code in a box? like the first Duck Dales w/ the box, pin, and redeem code.. oh well, even if it’s on disc like Strider or Okami, it’d most likly be a full mandatory HD install anyway, like playing the d/lable game w/ disc inside.. I want the box w/ Amano art though lol.

  • Alexandra Cordes

It would be a dream come true if a game were to be made, today, based on his designs.
Can you even imagine how beautiful that would be if rendered properly? *-*

    • Aoshi00

I think El Shaddai was pretty close to being in an Amano-style game in motion.. yeah, would be nice to have a game that truly represents his art w/ today’s graphics..

  • revenent hell

If the whole game was done with his art style I’d buy it in a nano second.
Don’t get me wrong I like the artwork of “today” but there’s just something “more” to the artwork that’s not all technology driven to me.

  • shuyai

i can see why his act is popular but i can never dig it, it looks like a blend traditional Japanese art and modern (fashion design) art, and the characters looks like they are from some kind of traditional Ayakashi drawing and kinda scary looking especially the eye

    • Aaron K Stone

I like that they’re not generic pretty boys with big pretty eyes. Amano just does… creepy pretty boys.

  • Arz

Not to disrespect his art, but all this time I always think the way he draw faces is creepy.

    • Guest

      Looks at avatar*

  • safeto20scroll

Dare I say – a match made in heaven?

  • psycho_bandaid

I usually dont really like amano’s art style but this picture is amazing.
