Combat In MMO Black Desert Looks Almost Like A Stylish Action Game

By Eugene . April 10, 2014 . 11:32am

Those worried about whether upcoming Korean online game Black Desert might just be a pretty face with no substance should check out the above trailer. Developers Pearl Abyss have released a combat trailer with the various classes for their upcoming closed beta for Black Desert.

There’s quite a lot of flashy zoom effects and whiz-bang when unleashing moves, but it’s nonetheless looking very smooth to play. Rolling behind foes and then unleashing attacks seems to do more damage, and combat does appear to rely as much on mobility and dancing around as it does on unleashing skills.

Oh, and if you’re worried about all the zooming in and out and motion blur, Pearl Abyss say you’ll be able to disable those effects.

Black Desert’s next closed beta is expected to start from April 22nd and will last for three weeks on PC.

That was insane. Will keep an eye on this one.

    • Mar Mar

That’s really stylish action. Many Korean MMORPGs promised stylish action gameplay but failed.

This one though, DAAAYM! Did I just see sparks?

      • TheSoullesOne

I’m in love with this first character creation being awesome now this god damn i wish i had a half decent computer to run it

      • Juan Andrés Valencia

TERA did it pretty damn well. If it wasn’t for the loli class running around avoiding lolicons.

        • Kai2591

        • Chris Cruz

Lets not forget the Racism that makes us grown adults look like we’re in the Fifties.

          • Juan Andrés Valencia

Weird… I’ve never encountered any instance of racism in TERA. However… that can’t be said about Call Of Duty or most MOBA’s, now those games have insanely agressive communities.

It’s not even funny racist jokes (We’ve all laughed at one), it’s flat out offensive.

          • Chris Cruz

You mean to tell me you’ve never seen the bashing on Brazilian players?

          • Juan Andrés Valencia

I last played it over a year ago. Don’t tell me the community has gone FUBAR.

  • Kayseur

Is there a way for us foreigners to get into the closed beta? It looks really cool. I was already loving the customisation but this is even better.

  • Merleawe

    So shiny :o

  • RichyGaming

This game looks super fun! I like the zoom-in if its for fun, but hopefully you can remove it though. It’ll be pretty annoying if not :l

    • ClaireBeare

Do people even read article instead of just watching the video? They have link to developer saying that it can be disabled.

    • Overlord Val

      Zoom-in Effect makes me dizzy…

  • Shippoyasha

Korean MMOs has been rapidly evolving the past 5 or 6 years. They took a lot of inspiration from stuff like God Eater and Monster Hunter with all the physics and hitbox oriented gameplay while the grinding is not as interminable as it used to be. I hear they will have parkour in this game like in Assassin’s Creed games. The game play in this one looks a bit like Dark Souls and Dragon’s Dogma which is promising.

The one big negative is when or if ever this game gets a western release. There are games like Blade and Soul that people are burnt out on waiting for a western release.

    • Tinye

Ooooh Blade and Soul where art thou

    • Unlimax

Also The War of Genesis 4 – Spiral Genesis looks really promising
      EIN : Epicus Incognitus
      Project Black Sheep
      Icarus Online

lots and lots of games their , not sure if their unannounced games :O

  • mojack411

Wow, I think that was the first time I ever got sick watching a gameplay video. I’ll definitely be turning off the motion blur if this ever gets a Western release. It was just too much.

Other than that the game looks a lot of fun,

  • Abysswalker90

    MMORPG is a good concept.
But they’re going to have to find a way to make it so that it’s not as grindy and repetitive as it usually is. I don’t know how exactly, but when they do, they’ll get some munnies out of me for sure.
To me, Dark Souls is the healthiest mix of single player / multiplayer experience. It takes the best of both worlds and blends it together(needless to mention, they did get my moneys).

  • Valtiel Ikari

    well, I’m sold!

  • KyoyaHibari

Holy crap, this looks like the hypest thing ever.

  • fairysun

It looks awesome, but how about the end game?
I’ve seen and played several MMORPG that look awesome in the beginning, but there’s no end game content.

    • harmonyworld

It’s still in beta, doubt there’s end game yet!

  • motion sickness…..

  • Whatever

  • Strongarm Thunderbeard

    Dogma May Cry.

  • decus

I just hope that was a “we aren’t finished with any enemy AI yet” demo to show off the skill effects. Otherwise it looks to be one of the worst monster hunter clones I’ve seen in a while and there have been a lot recently.

But hey, as long as it’s just a “we haven’t done that yet” demo at least it already looks close to Toukiden level where the enemies just do whatever they were gonna do regardless of where the character is.

  • Chip

If more MMO’s felt this energetic, I’d have no problem playing them.
Where were the creators of this when they made FInal Fantasy XIV?

    • Asaoko

Try Titan EM. You’ll curse them for making it so stressful. I guarantee it.

  • Magus KilIer

That was the coolest sorcerer ive seen in a while

  • Nightmesh

I hope it has controller support.

  • shuyai

there are tons of MMO with action game style combat and all of them doesnt work and ultimately pointless. for example enemy a mob swing a axe you dodge/roll behind and you clearly see the axe doesn’t hit you yet you still take damage. bottom line is skill/dodging mean shit all you need level, and what they did is simply replace auto attack with continuous manual mouse click which become repetitive and trying as hell after few hour

  • 60hz

now that’s some damn good action animation right there buddy! good lawd.

  • harmonyworld

I’m pretty excited for this one!
I’m usually hard pressed to find mmo’s that I like because the combat is so slow.
This looks fast paced and fun!
I so want in on this! :3

  • Omikuji

I wonder what would happen if there’s another player or two who rock up and start fighting too. Like, KSing type of stuff, or if the game is smart enough to have it everyone gets their own thing and help out others (IE GW2 style of battle)

But that worry aside, goodness that is smooth and fun looking. I wonder how much customization in the fighting abilities there will be to add even more flare to the fighting. It’s looking great but I always find myself asking this sort of stuff, to avoid hyping myself up into impossible to please level.

  • Been following this one for a little while, and I can say that I’ll definitely be playing this one in the future. The mage class is my favorite right now.

  • Guest

Dumb button smashing, repetitive as hell, with an AI that doesn’t even react to whatever you do … yeah … I have the feeling that this game will remain only a “pretty face” and nothing more …

    • Alter

Don’t forget weird camera works, uncanny face, and usual lack of story (generic MMORPG problem)

    • The Watcher

    • Kumiko Akimoto

Ahaha If only that were true.

  • I-Cronus-I

Woow!!! They should release it on consoles, too!

  • Suriel Cruz

    one word… IMPRESSIVE! O_O

PS4? It may be the reason for me to by one at the moment.

  • Kornelious

This looks AWESOME! I’ve never seen an MMO with such smooth combat, and from what I checked, it will be released in the West and on the PS4…but not for a little while. I don’t even care if this isn’t F2P, this look like an MMO that will be fun for a while :D

  • Enma_Kozato

I’d download a character creation demo but since it looks like some of the classes (giant, tamer, blader) are gender locked, I have no interest in playing.

  • Steven Higgins

    High-Fantasy Setting? Check.
    Powerful Character Creator? Check.
    Beautiful Graphics? Check.
    Flashy Combat System? Check.

Okay Black Desert, you’ve earned my notice. Congratulations. I’ll be keeping an eye on you, waiting to find out about your story. However, ArcheAge still tops my list as “Most Anticipated MMO of 2014.”

  • The Watcher

Why is everything starting to look better than PSO2 now?

    • Vanadise

Well, PSO2 came out almost two years ago, so it’s only natural that newer games will look better than it.

To be fair, PSO2 still looks better than a lot of MMORPGs.

      • Chris Evan Jonance Ingeniero

add to that … Black desert will hit western market by 2016… so whats the point in drooling now? imean Blade and soul was most anticipated back during 2008 but was only available in the westerm market by 2012 and its not even global yet (sea doesnt have blade and soul afaik till now)

  • Earthjolly

Looks like Dragon’s Dogma to me

  • Kai2591

wow. The battles look amazing imo. Reminds me of PSO2 but flashier. But damn was the motion blur nauseating….In any case, the fighting moves look cool and the sounds they make feel satisfying. I especially like the battle demo of the last character starting at 3:43 – those grab-and-slams look awesome~

  • Hentailover

This just looks tiring. I mean, sure, it may seem like an exciting encounter in the video… buuuuuuuut, it’s an MMO. which means average quest will have you running back and forth between a dozen of such encounters, one exactly the same as another, yet enemies have entirely too much health, so each will take forever…

  • Hector Velar

I love the character creation on this game, and surely the action does looks very smooth. My concern is that the game is going to have crappy, repetitive, boring quests that is going to kill the game like it happened to Terra and pretty much all Korean MMO games, where to them quests consists on collecting 3000 of such item for some NPC and then talking to another and collecting 5000 items and so on so on.

  • DRIG

screw blade and soul it’s all about this game
