Zero Escape Director Reveals That He’s Working On A New Title

VLR

Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward creator Kotaro Uchikoshi recently spoke about the fate of the series and how it might be a while until we see a third game in the series. In this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine, Uchikoshi broke the silence and revealed that he’s actually working on a new game.

Here’s what Uchikoshi had to say on the subject of a possible new game.

“Yes, that’s right. This time, we were able to go through with a project thanks to the help from the folks at Mages. At the moment, we are zealously developing the game. The scenario if already complete, and while this may be my own opinion, I’m very confident in this title!”

Mages, is part of visual novel publisher 5pb. Their projects include Phantom Breaker and on the 5pb label Robotic;Notes. Kotaro Uchikoshi also says that we’ll be getting a first look of the new game soon.

Good to hear, really. There should always be a project rewarded for proven talents like Uchikoshi. Now for the anxious wait to see if it’s a mobile game or handheld.

    • Kumiko Akimoto

You mean the wait to see how many people will whine about something they haven’t played?

  • Malon

    Tchoo tchoo
All aboard the hype train, and no escape !

  • Ben Green

OMG I’m crying!! best news i heard all year

  • Luis Es.

Awesome! Can’t wait to check it out. Wish they’d tell us a bit of the scenario already since it’s done!. I’m not a patient man with things like this!

  • TaintedSeraph

Obviously Siliconera likes to mislead their readers:

“Although he’s still working for Spike Chunsoft, Uchikoshi unambiguously told Famitsu that he is indeed collaborating with Steins;Gate developer Mages on a new game and that the scenario is already complete. He went on to say it’ll be a “sexual comedy” set to a science fiction suspense fantasy. As one might expect from him, he has high hopes that the game will turn out well.”

It most likely ISN’T Zero Escape 3.

    • XiaomuArisu

      Pity…but still cool

    • domonkun

Yeah, I clicked on the article expecting this. Gotta keep that hype train in check.

    • Lynx

      I don’t see how the title’s misleading.

“New Title” would imply something new, not something of an established series.

      • TaintedSeraph

Not necessarily, there’s been many articles that start with “_____ working on new title” that pertains to a series.

    • ReMeDyIII

      >>> He went on to say it’ll be a “sexual comedy”

And there goes any chance of this getting localized. The west simply doesn’t tolerate this genre. My guess is it’s also a “slice of life” title. Why the hell did they bring in Uchikoshi for something like this?

      • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

hmm, I wouldn’t write it off just yet.

      • Aaron K Stone

Zero Escape had a bit of sexual comedy in it.

      • Lusankya

It’s a “sexual comedy set to a science fiction suspense fantasy”, so probably not slice of life.

    • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Siliconera just used an image from the most recent game that Uchikoshi worked on. And I think that’s a fair and appropriate image to use.

      • TaintedSeraph

I never said the image wasn’t fair play. I’m just saying that Siliconera didn’t include every piece of information in their article. Instead they chose to be very vague about what the game was about, which could cause confusion among the fanbase.

        • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

To be fair, Uchikoshi’s description is pretty vague. He’s probably not at liberty to divulge anything until MAGES give an official announcement.

Plus, the fact that MAGES are publishing and not Chunsoft is the tip-off that this has nothing to do with Zero Escape.

      • Kari

They could have easily used a pic of the creator ~

        • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

About that: I challenge you to find a picture of Kotaro Uchikoshi that isn’t a blurry phone camera shot from GDC.

          • Kari

Challenge accepted. How many pics do you want? You might want to try searching for him using his Japanese name otherwise known as 日本人の氏名 in Google. It’s better than using romanji. I also included that blurry photo just for fun

          • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

            hi five!

    • Hélèna Lucille Frances

You most likely don’t know how to read. Or just need to TAKE TIME to read. Being confused on the title of the article is not the same as being mislead. YOUR bad.

      • notentirelythere

The title is vague, and the first line of the article recognizes the suspense of the third Zero Escape game’s fate. Seems likely enough the author chose to present this news in a way to play off that suspense.
Imagine a title like, “Zero Escape Director Working on Sexy Sci-Fi Comedy”. Much more on point.

      • TaintedSeraph

The author of the article capitalizes a little too much on the Zero Escape series, which could cause confusion. It is never explicitly stated that Uchikoshi is working on a game outside of the Zero Escape series. In fact, the author writes about how he said it might be awhile until a third game before going on to write “that he recently broke the silence.” Along with the line: “Here’s what Uchikoshi had to say on the subject of a possible new game.”

Taken at face-value, one could suspect that they’re referring to the possible third title in the series. But thank you for your criticism of my education. However, I think you should take your time to read my comment again and notice that I did not say anything about a misleading title.

One that will hopefully make it to the west too. This guy poops pure gold I swear…

  • Lumi

Well at least we are getting something before ZE3. Or at least, Japan gets something.

  • Michael Richardson

Hopefully this’ll sell well so that ZE3 can be greenlit. That’s all I really care about. I’ll buy the new game if it comes overseas, though. This guy is amazing.

    • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Separate publishers. What brings in money for MAGES probably won’t concern Spike Chunsoft :(

  • mojack411

I’m kinda sad that he’s not finishing up the Zero Escape series first (THAT CLIFFHANGER AFTER VLR!!!!) but hopefully whatever he’s making instead will make up for the wait.

  • idrawrobots

I will likely buy whatever this ends up being.

  • Mirai

Jumped the gun on this topic, as at first I thought it was an announcement for the next Zero Escape game as having just finished VLR a few days ago, I got really excited for this. I’m disappointed a series like this is not getting enough support in Japan as it overall has an excellent story and I couldn’t stop playing the game once I had started.

    • kaotron

yeah, it sucks that this game is niche in japan too(mostly because it doesnt revolve around highschoolers and fanservice).

i just completed vlr recently too and it sucks that is was a cliff hanger when they werent even sure if they’d get to make a third game.

  • DyLaN

    EDIT: Nevermind

  • Yan Zhao

So is he actually working on another Zero Escape or just another game?

  • Alexandra Cordes

I’m sorry I don’t have anything intellectual to contribute to the comments section, but… KJFKJLDFSKFJKSDJKDFJDKDFJFFGGGJGG JDDJDJDJSAJKJFF THIS IS THE BEST GAMING NEWS IN A LONG WHILE

  • Nicole Mazur

I have stalked this website for ages and finally I join! I’m so excited to hear news about a third game!

    • Alexandra Cordes

Unfortunately, it’s not a third game in the Zero Escape series.
It’s most likely going to be a new IP.
      Still good news, though. :3

  • Jadfish

It’s fine if it isn’t Zero Escape 3…. yet.
As long as the guy is in employment and doing what he loves, everything is fine

  • ZekeFreek

MAGES has been rather console-centric lately so I doubt we’ll ever see this project localized.

Same reason we’ll probably never get the Robotics;Notes VN.

  • redhood56

I would rather Uchikoshi make zero escape 3 but he has to do something to pay the bills. Hopefully zero escape 3 comes out eventually!
