See Kanji And Yukiko Switch Personas In Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth

By Spencer . April 11, 2014 . 3:55am

In the Persona series only someone with the power of the Wild Card can switch personas. In Persona 3 and Persona 4 that ability was unique to the protagonists. However, in Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth everyone can use other Personas.

Allowing other characters like Kanji who usually is limited to physical attack and lightning skills change Personas gives players more strategic options. Switching to Flauros gave Kanji a spell that inflicted shadows with sleep. Equipping Titania instead of Amaterasu allows Yukiko to use wind skills. Personas equipped by other characters level up and learn new skills just like in other Persona games.

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth comes out on June 5 for Nintendo 3DS.

  • Nagi

wonder if they have compatibility with the personas to make things unique

    • Aesma

…well, the compatibility system were in pre-Persona 3. …so it is not exactly unique.

      • Nagi

oh yeah :/ forgot but kinda wish if they are compatible they get bonuses, resistance or something

        • Aesma

True, that would be interesting… Though I think they’ll limit it with Persona belonging to certain Arcana instead (Similar to the old system), I mean, seeing characters like Akihiko use Pixie will be… hilarious.

          • Hunts Rattata

I hope everyone has unique lines for using Mara, like how Liz and Theo would comment if you had him equipped.

          • God

Or what the female cast will comment when you equip them with Mara.

          • Nagi

Girls react to the guys using mara too :>

          • Nagi

Or maybe they get special interactions for that :P

  • mynameisdats

    This is blasphemy

    • X_Bacon

      This is madness!

      • natchu96

        This . . . is . . . SPARTAAAAAAA!!!!

screw the combo buildup. Sparta matters.

    • Emd23

Nah, other way around. Blasphemy was giving the Wild Card only to the lead and having his team be scrubs. Things are finally back the way they should be. Thank you, Dr. Phil.

      • MrTyrant

Yeah and it was one of the things I loved in Persona 1 or 2 because you don’t feel that your main character is that special or anything.

  • natchu96

    “High Pixie!”

132 damage? You make pixies everywhere look bad! Go ask Demifiend’s Uberpixie for tips!.

  • Kumiko Akimoto

I never got why etrian doesn’t allow 3/3 character out at the same time

    • lunier

I think an interview for the first game, when asked the same question the director said something like “I wanted the player to feel as if they’re missing out on one class, so that it doesn’t feel perfect” or something along those lines

      • hng qtr

That makes sense, for me it’s always hard to decide if I should get 2 or 3 front row characters.

        • http://www.thejaystack.com/ Jon Stachewicz

Most of the time, 3 front 2 back is ideal. Whoever your tank is and your 2 main damage dealers work best in the front, plus since buffs and mid level healing spells usually affect rows instead of an entire party, it’s best to be able to help out as many of your fighters as you can in the same turn.

If you’re scared about leaving too much of your party open to damage, a Protector/Hoplite/Fortress or what have you with Provoke will soak up a lot of hits on her own

    • http://www.thejaystack.com/ Jon Stachewicz

They do if you’re playing a Ninja or Wildling in 3

      • hng qtr

Some NPC’s join your party temporarily in 4.

        • http://www.thejaystack.com/ Jon Stachewicz

Ah yes, forgot about that. They’re not technically NPCs though!

  • EX+

Hmm. Some of these sub-persona’s a very reminiscent of Persona 2′s art style.

    • miju

They’ve been using the same art with minor touch-ups from SMT games.

  • TrueDefault

At least let this come to EU, Atlus!!!!

    • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

That’s like asking the govenment to reduce the tax to 19%. it’s never going to happen lol

      • TrueDefault

Bah, I’m still optimistic! It’s a big title.

        • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

and we said the same thing about SMTIV.

          • TrueDefault

I can’t win here, can I? Fine, fine… let me live alone in my fluffy realm of possibilities!

          • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

            bye!

          • Hexodious

Sure, i’m literally pissed off about SMT IV being delayed like a fucking train without rails.

Not sure if you’re serious or not, but isn’t a bit idiotic to say “(Atlus game here) is never coming to Europe” because of SMT IV?

          • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

Well considering I didn’t say those exact words, all I’m saying is you best not put your hopes into a game that has a high chance of not being localized to Europe.

Until Atlus learns that Europe exist, we will probably never see the light of day for future game developed by them.

https://twitter.com/NintendoEurope/status/324531788527595520 it’s nearly been a year since nintendo of europe announced this and we have literally heard NOTHING.

          • Hexodious

As long Persona Q isn’t being localized by Nintendo of Europe, our chances are just as regular as they’ve always been in the past; always being localized by niche companies such as Aksys, Ghostlight and so on.

It’s a Persona game, I don’t think Atlus will screw this one up for Europe.

          • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

As much as I don’t want to burst your bubbles, the situation remains the same.

“It’s a Persona game, I don’t think Atlus will screw this one up for Europe”

P4A would like a word with you.

          • Hexodious

I’m talking about Persona Q in SMT IV shoes. We actually got P4A, unlike SMT IV.

  • Shane Guidaboni

I almost wish Yuzo Koshiro did the music for this game. That would have been an interesting combination.

  • Jero

Like the shining stars, light the path whenever it’s dark ♪ I’m loving the battle music.

  • Spirit Macardi

So can you only have one of each Persona equipped per team, or can I have everyone use Mara at once? XD

    • Byron Kerrison II

This is what I was waiting for.

  • IshimaruKaito

just because im used to it in the games this is gnna be wierd for me lol

  • Dianatos

    Titania!! Are you ready~?

  • https://www.youtube.com/user/BaoZakeruga BaoZakeruga

Honestly if it wasn’t for the OST I’d consider skipping this one. No matter how much I love persona.

  • Steven Higgins

This gave me an idea, What if in future persona games, like Person 5, everyone can switch Personas like in 1 and 2, except their limited to the ones in their Arcana more like 3-4? Like the girl with the Priestess Arcana can use ALL Priestess Personas?
Though, I’d still like the protagonist to be able to use any Persona of any Arcana.

    • Aspenharls

I just thought this myself. I hope this game is like this too, to help give it some balance. I’m not really a huge fan of everyone being able to use everything.

      • Steven Higgins

Well, I can’t remember about Flauros, but IIRC, Titania is an Empress, but Yukiko has Priestess. So it’s not exactly like that idea, but there may be other limits.

        • Landale

The Arcanas aren’t exactly set in stone on the Personas from game to game, so this doesn’t rule out Arcana based limitations. Gurr has been Moon and Jester, Lilim has been Moon and Devil, Seth has been Tower and Moon, Titania has been Lovers and Empress, Isis has been Magician, Lovers, and Empress, to name a few examples.

          • Steven Higgins

True, but this is a Persona 3/4 spin off. Even if it’s non canon, I doubt they’d change it unless it was a separate title.

          • Landale

Some of those changes were between 3 and 4, not just over the entire series. So which should they follow?

  • Snorlaxation

Ya know, after playing the first Persona games, I always wondered what kind of Personas the P3 and P4 cast would choose (or be compatible with) in this situation. Cool :)
Too bad Fuuka and Rise probably won’t get to join in on that. Maybe they can combine strengths or something. Some kind of ultimate Scan or something

  • http://shadious.tumblr.com/ Vince

Oooh, seems everyone now has a Wild Card ability, similar to the P1 and P2 gang.

  • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

Leader Skill (yet to be seen), each character able to use more than one Persona and that MUSIC… OMG! I want that!

Interesting to see that Persona skills have been reduced from 8 to 6. I need this game, my 3DS yearns for it.

  • RajaNaga

Cool to know, I much prefer the old persona system to Wild Cards. Love this battle music too, LOTUS JUICE!!! I missed you buddy. The graphics are adorable too.

  • hng qtr

The art for the Personas looks like what they used in the Raidou games.

  • natchu96

And people complain about this being first person dungeon crawling . . .

I hope this video satisfies people. The Etrian Odyssey IV UI really does first person best. The zooming is annoying as heck.
