Last week, Atlus revealed Persona 4 Golden: The Animation, a new Persona 4 Golden anime series featuring the new character Marie from the PlayStation Vita game. 4Gamer shares a closer look at some of the anime’s characters, along with some information on the staff.

002

Tomohisa Taguchi, who previously worked on the opening and other key parts of Persona 4: The Animation, like episode 8’s school camping trip and episode 14’s summer vacation parts, will be the new director for Persona 4 Golden: The Animation.

Meanwhile, Seiji Kishi, the director of the previous series, will be returning as the chief director to support the new series. Composer Shoji Meguro, scenario writer Jun Kumagai, character designer Yu Shindo, and many other key staff members will also reprise their roles for the upcoming anime.

Additionally, Persona 4 Golden: The Animation will  be bringing back all the voice actors from the first series and the game, including Persona 4 Golden’s voice actress for Marie, Kana Hanazawa, who is also known for voicing Mayuri Shiina in Steins;Gate, Plutia from the Hyperdimension Neptunia games, and numerous other roles.

Finally, here’s a look at some of the screenshots for Persona 4 Golden: The Animation.

Why does this even exist? Did anybody want this?

    • Arizato

I actually want it. P4G is canon now after all, why not have an anime that explains the events of Golden to those who don’t want to purchase a Vita just for P4G (Even though it’s a great system seller).

      • gulabjamal

What does that actually mean, when something is “canon”. I hate that phrase because it’s confused me for so long. What makes you want to say it and what the hell does it mean. Please advise

        • hng qtr

For example, you can choose a boy or a girl to play as in Persona 3. In every(or at least most) official work in the Persona universe the boy was the actual protagonist of Persona 3 and the girl never existed, making the girl route some sort of alternate reality that has no influence on the other games. So the boy is the canon MC and the girl is non-canon.

          • gulabjamal

Thank you!! Also a great example like the two above. I saw this first on my email and I completely get it now.

        • Nightmare637

Canon is like the main route or routes the story follows, normally confirmed by the sequels like in tales of Symphonia you fixing up Luin is canon which is confirmed in the sequal DOTNW.

side routes, alternate reality’s, What if scenarios, ect… are considered non-canon.(like a spin off whose events don’t fit in the original Timeline)

of course when it comes to Megaten Canon can get VERY confusing with the Amala universe and all that.

          • gulabjamal

Thank you man, I do get it now. I’m surprised people legitimately replied to me instead of saying “You can Google can’t you?” Very much appreciated :)

          • Nightmare637

            Your welcome!^_^

            I’m glad I could be of service.~

          • http://takopako.tumblr.com takopako

that’s one of my favorite things about this community!

        • Gael Summers

“canon” means that something is true to the established universe/timeline

Let’s use Megaman X as an example

The games of Megaman X through X8 make up most of the Megaman X series. The story of X and his adventures through those games are “canon,” meaning legitmate or official. In terms of the Megaman universe, the events of those games happened.

Conversely, we have Project X Zone, where X and Zero team up with characters from other franchises to go on a big adventure. In terms of the Megaman universe, none of that actually happened. Since the events involving X and Zero in Project X Zone didn’t happen in the Megaman timeline, it is “non-canon/not canon.” In terms of the Megaman universe, the events of that game never happened.
tl;dr Canon just means official to the set universe/timeline

          • gulabjamal

A big thank you. This was exactly the kindof example I needed. I sincerely appreciate it!!

          • Gael Summers

No problem, glad I could help!

          • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com/ SilverSpades

While we’re speaking of canon, what’s P3 MC’s canon name?

We have Minato Arisato from the manga, but the film says it’s Makoto Yuki. But then, Persona Q says” f**k you movies, his name’s Minato again.”

Q is obviously non-canon, but it still makes no sense why they would re-use Minato (as more badass and personally fitting it is as a name for MC) when the movies say another name.

          • Gael Summers

That I definitely don’t have an answer to, though I prefer Minato Arisato lol

      • DeadLineDance

Whoa whoa, hold up. Since when are Marie and Adachi’s SLink (and Golden’s content in general) canon? Only evidence I’ve seen is that Marie’s in Q, but we don’t know if Q’s even canon yet, considering Theo’s in it.

        • Arizato

In the epilogue of The Golden they mention the events back in May, referring to Persona 4 Arena. Considering Arena is canon we can safely probably assume that The Golden is canon as well. If Persona 4 Ultimax doesn’t retcon The Golden Epilogue though. But the rest before that is canon.

Now Adachi’s social link could be debated, but plausible since the canon path in that link certainly isn’t the one where Yu betrays his friends. I mean, he could still be friends with the guy until he figures out what he did.

          • Rodrigo Branco

Even if you max his SL you have to decide to cover him up or tell everyone the truth, and if you do, his SL changes

          • Arizato

            Exactly.

    • TopoRUS

Yep. Why not? P4A was pretty good as “extending” for game.
      And, of course, Marie… :3
So, at least I want this :D

    • Manny Being Manny

Plenty of people wanted it, given that the original anime was one of the best selling anime of the last few years.

      • ( `Д´)ノ)`ν゜)

There’s hardly anything new to it other than an incredibly annoying character. A bunch of scenes throughout the 80 hours of gameplay but it will probably be difficult to even spot them during the animation unless they only show those.

        • Manny Being Manny

Its being completely remade with a new animation studio. Its not like they’re just airing the series again with a few extra scenes thrown in like some people seem to think.

I wonder if there were so many people complaining about Kanon being remade a few years later. Now people forget the original version even exists and the remake is a classic.

If the original anime was already great, then yeah I’d understand the hate. But the original anime had many issues that could be fixed in a remake, and as a Persona 4 fan, I’d want the best possible anime adaption it can get.

          • MrTyrant

Kanon at least didn’t appear even in my soup like P4 do now lol and the update of Kanon was truly necessary if I remember correctly one not only had atricious animation but was really short and didn’t cover most of the routes events.

        • Earthjolly

Only that Marie isn’t a annoying character and is far better than Rise and Yukiko

          • Anime10121

Hey hey hey, Rise I’ll give you, but leave my Yukiko out of this :/
            Yukiei for life <3

          • God

I found most characters really annoying, you know, self righteous brats and all, so Marie who didn’t get that much screentime never got to talk about “good” or “bad” or “evil”, was among the few “main” characters the characters who didn’t annoy me.

          • Slayven19

Hey you were probably annoying when you were younger as well.

But seriously I don’t really find them annoying, they are just teenagers and unless you find them all annoying I don’t know what to tell ya.

          • God

Yeah, i was annoying as hell (with the difference that i made an effort to be as annoying as possible), but i’ve been a relativist since i can remember, so at the very least i wasn’t self righteous.

          • Slayven19

I don’t really see much wrong with being self righteous though, but maybe your experience is different from mine as to why you feel that way.

          • God

Most likely, and it’s not really “wrong”, it just annoys me.

    • Son of a Smooosh

In all honesty, a huge part of the fanbase would eat up anything P4 related… :V

Personally, I’m not interested in this. I’ve played the original on PS2, I’ve played Golden on the Vita and I’ve seen the original Animation.
There are so many shows I still want to see (and games I want to play for that matter, after all, time is limited) that I can’t justify going through the whole thing again, at least not in video format.

I don’t find the plot all that compelling to begin with, love the characters, they made the game for me, but I don’t want to hear their backstory for the umpteenth time…

      • MrTyrant

You already know who the killer is right? :P those who watch anime and don’t play the games didn’t know but now everyone do lol

      • JMaster3000

In the near future: PERSONA 4 YOUR MOM EDITION

        • God

The largest and the most accesible edition known to men.

    • MrTyrant

I didn’t want it and don’t expect me to agree with those who do. Just because they like a girl and all the new stuff doesn’t justify this when all about the plot is very well know.

Now as someone who did love Persona (every entry) I feel like the cast of Persona 4 are not better than whores.

      • Arizato

Marie has alot to do with the main plot of Persona 4 though. She isn’t just some moe waifu-bait.

        • ( `Д´)ノ)`ν゜)

She’s shoehorned as hell. Just like the true end boss. You could leave both out and nothing about the story or the experience would change.

          • DarkLight

            And….?

          • ( `Д´)ノ)`ν゜)

And remaking a two year old anime to shoehorn her in, again, just to sell more BDs and figures of her seems, well, typically ATLUS now that I think about it.

          • Bri-tastic

More? They released one keychain figure. I know because I love her and outside of that I’ve only seen one garage kit. Bring on Marie figures pls.

          • Arizato

Sure, she is shoehorned in I can admit that. But I don’t agree with you on Izanami. The story about Izanagi and Izanami while visiting Gekkoukan High is the first nod that something bigger is going on. Nothing really changes after you beat Ameno-Sagiri, the game doesn’t feel as complete until you unravel the whole thing.

Also, the Izanami fight is where the entire climax occurs, no matter how cliché it is. When they are almost defeated and Yu starts “dreaming” about his friends. It’s a really awesome climax, no matter how cheesy it is.

          • MrTyrant

It’s cheesy you said it. Not cool.

          • Arizato

When did I say it was cool?

What does that have to do with this animation though? The final battle was also in the original Persona 4. So the cheesiness is in that game as well.

          • MrTyrant

P3 did something similar that’s why. They try to reproduce something very similar, the same damn scene.

          • Arizato

Because both games are about the same damn cliché thing. Social links are the source to your power in Persona 3 and 4. No wonder they are doing the same thing. The main difference between Persona 3 and 4 are the underlying themes.

Persona 3′s themes were about mortality and the meaning of life.

Persona 4′s themes are about seeing the truth and not making up your own truth for the convenience.

Both games have the same themes but with different underlying sub-themes. Persona 5 is probably going to have the “friendship is power” as well, but with the underlying sub-theme of the shackles of society ATLUS talked about.

          • God

P3 and P4 were completely different, besides the “bonds are power”, everything else is different, like how Persona 3 at least didn’t have main cast made completely out of self righteous brats.

          • Arizato

I enjoy Persona 3 way more than Persona 4. P3 clicked more with me, but I can’t deny that I really enjoy the Persona 4 cast since you had more interaction with them.

Yes, Persona 3 is the better game and while there are differences I don’t really agree that they are THAT different. Aside from the casts, the setting and some themes they are really similar. But playing through Persona 3 FES again this last weekend just reminded me how much I enjoy P3 more.

          • God

The cast, the setting, and most themes, including the fundamental ones (memento mori, the truth), what else do you want?

      • Charles Parker

You don’t have to want it to be a fan of the series and the only thing it needs to be justified is it having something to give and enough fans wanting it. That doesn’t have to include you.

    • DarkLight

      Yeah I did.

      • MrTyrant

        You bad boy.

    • transferstudentx

well i didnt at first but now i do

    • Nightmare637

      yep!~^_^

    • AlaAlba

No one is expecting this kind of announcement at all. But I don’t think no one wants this, anyone who getting annoyed is still just a small vocal group from what I see. And I think most Japanese fans are happy.

I barely know anything about why Atlus is doing this, but this post in tumblr might be interesting given Atlus situation as a new company http://nenilein.tumblr.com/post/84604853402/i-think-what-many-people-dont-realize-is-that-atlus

    • Kaitsu

      I don’t mind it. I’d watch it…again.

    • Shane Guidaboni

Didn’t watch the first series and have no plans to watch the second. Bring on P5!

    • James Reilly

P4G added several memorable events so for the opportunity to see events like Okina City babe hunt and the beach wardrobe malfunction animated alone makes it worth it. Not to mention anything Marie related and further Adachi development omitted from the original. P4G added a ton of stuff it’s not simply “ok Marie added we done”.

    • Cazar

What’s wrong with it existing? Stop being butthurt just because they didn’t reveal P5 news. It’s not like P Studio is working on this anime in it’s place.

      • ( `Д´)ノ)`ν゜)

It already exists and it’s only two years old. The handful of new scenes and the ham-fisted new character don’t warrant another series. Waste of money that could have went into developing games that don’t re-use NDS assets.

        • Cazar

Aniplex is handling the budget for this, not Atlus. Anime production is a completely separate world from game development.

  • Zer0faith

Still curious as to whether this will be a full reboot of either 12-24 eps, or a bunch of evenly spaced out OVAS.

  • Anime10121

Still wanna know how they’re gonna make this different from the original besides better quality animation…

Also wonder if this is gonna be a 2 cour series like the original or will they shorten it to one and focus only on Marie, and the extra things that happen in the Golden like the winter vacation and… Valentines day (all dat rejection and awkward feels) T.T

—————VIDEO SPOILERS for those who’ve yet to experience Golden!!!—————

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJL7WLrHNM0

  • Aaron Alcindor

Why couldn’t it be a fun persona 3 anime about makoto from the P3 movies maxing his social links :(

    • Anime10121

Probably because it’d end before the promised trilogy of movies and put a damper on ticket sales of the third and final movie…

      (wants a P3 anime too) :(

  • LexKitteh

If this anime only covers the new content from Golden, I’d enjoy this. If its a reboot of an anime that’s only two years old, its pretty ridiculous.

    • James Reilly

It would have to cover the old stuff too obviously. The new content is scattered throughout the year.

  • Kaetsu

    B-but I love Seiji :(

  • MrTyrant

Instead of Golden they could have made two different versions of Persona 3. One with the male and another with the female main character. At least changing every damn scene to fit those different views.

    • Nightmesh

I would love if they kept the movies with the male protage and made an anime with the female one.

    • James Reilly

Yeah and it would be as canon as that other P3 anime that shall not be named. Not interested. At least P4G is relevant to the main continuity.

      • MrTyrant

The original P4 anime is not canon and the games Q and Dance shouldn’t be canon. We shouldn’t care about them neither because everything that is canon is the important thing.

        • God

Too bad, beacuse Dance is canon, and you don’t get to decide if it should be canon or not.

          • Nightmare637

wait how is dance canon? o_0

          • Hexodious

Yeah, it’s set after the events of Ultimax.

          • God

            Beacuse i say so.

  • Revorse

Their ears looks elfish…it’s kinda bothering me. Yeeah I know it’s petty.

    • Nightmare637

you see now can’t unsee that. :/

  • QueenDecim

Please stop milking persona 3 and 4, they are dried up husks of their selves now. And all the while you have the best persona (2) waiting to be milked patiently.

    • Son of a Smooosh

Not sure about milking, but I still want Eternal Punishment PSP to get localized… :[

    • Manny Being Manny

The fact that Persona 1 and 2 on PSP sold like 1/4th of P3P tells you all you need to know about why they’re not milking that instead.

      • Herok♞

together or separately? Since those 3 games together should be kinda close

      • MrTyrant

Of course money is everything I know. FFXII was 40/40 according to famitsu and FFXIII was one of the best selling ones. Everything else is trash and the same company should milk those masterpiece forever never moving forward. That’s the way.

        • Anime10121

But difference being, Atlus IS moving forward (at least faster than SE) having finally announced Persona 5 for release this winter.

          • MrTyrant

Took them long yeah but I agree that SE is kind of hopeless nowadays (except for Bravery team) and to be honest I don’t have faith in FFXV less with a party full of bishies. I have to wait to see the main narrative and gameplay still.

      • QueenDecim

Because the majority of the fanbase needs validation from their 2D waifus and are playing the game for little more than progressing the game for more waifu interaction. P2 has undeniably the best characters, and arguably the best story of all Persona. The only thing holding it back is the non modern battle system.

        ….I just want a Persona 2 anime…

        • Anime10121

Cant wait to start that after I finish the first game! I’ve heard a LOT of good things about it! I’m loving the first so far, and dont know whether I’ll do the Snow Queen route or head straight into 2 IS (probably the former :) )

        • Ni ~Algidus~

forget it. P2 is too un-happy-go-lucky and tatsuya is not your PIMP MC that is liked so much today

          • Anime10121

But…but…P3′s not happy go lucky (unless you’re strictly referring to 4 which I can agree with)!!!

          • Ni ~Algidus~

            yup. it’s about P4 i’m talking. :)
while P3 had it’s happy go lucky moments it felt more like P1 to me. specially if you take the snow queen route (which is a pain to play if you are planning to get all ultimate personas of the cast since you need to start by the thanatos tower)

          • Anime10121

Havent played that route yet, as I’m still going through the normal one in P1, though I’ll probably play through it before I start Innocent Sin…

          • Ni ~Algidus~

I wish you a good playthrought then.
tip: get lvl 26 and a good portion of money after the events on the police station and before going back to school and triggering the SQQ

  • ivanchu77

Telling the same old story as the old anime but pandering a little to the generic filler tsundere Marie, yeah… not interested, way too little, this feels like one of the multiple “sequels” street fighter 2 had, but in anime form

  • AlphaSixNine

I want it. And obviously enough people do for Atlus to warrant doing it. Why people who don’t feel the need to whine and moan about it is a mystery to me. Just leave it be if you’re not interested, no need to damp on other peoples enjoyment because not enough people agree with you that you can’t get what you want.

  • Masa

What about the people that bought the first version and now a better version comes out…kinda sucks.

  • Spirit Macardi

It’s basically sounding like Persona 4: Brotherhood.

  • Theob Vious Choice

I’m cool with it, even though I’m not a fan of the game series (because *vomits* dubbing) I thoroughly did enjoy the anime. Admittedly the only reason I’d find this to be irritating is that so many good anime never get a second season, never mind an entire revised series. Still cool though, I’ll watch it, spares me the trouble of playing the game.

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

      You better mop that, kupo.

  • Benjamin Tyler

Weapons and Yu x Marie romance.
    That is all.

  • ndjn3979

    So…is this like a sequel….or just a shameless rehash?

    • DyLaN

Most likely just an adaptation of the new events in Golden.

  • Ms_Fortune

    Ugg, Marie.

    • KaiYamato

I don’t get it. How did she get this popular that quickly? I swear, it’s like Aigis.

  • Amir

Animation-wise, it’s looking better than P4A. Also, as much as I like to play The Golden, I’m not going to get a Vita to play it. I’m watching this.

Persona 4: The Animation wasn’t perfect but it was pretty good. With this, the same staff that made P4A are trying to address the problems of the first one, add-on some new contents, and also by remaking the animation and art, produce the definitive Persona 4 animation. It’s exactly “Persona 4: The Animation: The Golden”.

    • Earthjolly

“As much as I like to play The Golden, I’m not going to get a Vita to play it”

      That makes no sense

  • Mirai

Apparently this is a remake of the original anime, if that’s the case then it needs to at least be 3-cour (39 episodes approx) otherwise it will be too fast-paced for it to be any good.

    • hng qtr

Quality seems to be the least of their concerns when we consider the other animes based on Megaten games.

  • Mir Teiwaz

    I’d watch it.

  • Kayseur

I haven’t played P4G, so I’m going to try this one. I didn’t really like the first anime, hopefully this one will be better. At least Hanazawa Kana is in there, and Marie looks pretty in this screenshot.

But if I like it it’s going to take away any reason from me to get the game. Not that it’s a bad thing, my backlog’s full enough already.

  • Kroz

sooooo is it going to be completely re drawn and animated or are they just rehashing the old one with extra episodes and scenes with marie???

    • Anime10121

Completely redone, its an entirely new studio doing it!

  • Ecchitori-san

I’m just watching this just for the sake of the good animation..

  • MrJechgo

    Wow… so much hatred…

P4 The Animation was probably the closest thing to an accurate anime adaptation of a video game… because other anime VG adaptations failed miserably.

    • Anime10121

It made me buy a Vita early (already had P4G though from a sale)!

    • MrTyrant

And for each port with extra things would you do an anime for it, right? even if say anime isn’t old enough to receive a remake and we have enough P4 material to atract people to it? ok.

      • MrJechgo

That’s like saying that Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and the Hunter X Hunter recent series were bad ideas…

        • Göran Isacson

Not sure how well those apply, really. In both those cases, there was a great volume of new plot added: Brotherhood stuck to the manga story instead of spinning off into it’s own thing, and from what I’ve heard the recent Hunter X Hunter is doing the WHOLE story, not just 25 episodes and then stopping. Here though… we’ve pretty much got the whole plot with the first P4 anime. Golden really didn’t add THAT much as to warrant a whole new anime, unless this is some kind of Groundhogs Day loop that will spin off into something completely new…

    • Lynx

      Naaaaaaaaah.

It sucked. The quality animation, pacing issues and just shoe-horned SLinks really dragged it down. Had it focused on just the main plot and not any of the SLinks, it might’ve been better.

-because other anime VG adaptations failed miserably.

The SRW anime are pretty decent at what they do. Dare I say Divine Wars is better than P4A, CGI not withstanding.

Besides, Seiji Kishi doesn’t do video game adaptions that great.

      • James Reilly

The slinks are a big part of the game though. Ignoring them would be a worse decision for an adaption then the decision of removing the weapons.

      • LightZero

I thought the anime was alright. The Devil Survivor 2 anime was the far bigger abomination.

Social Links? You’re REALLY complaining about the rushed Social Links?

        Yeah… because Social Links TOTALLY affected the story in major ways ¬_¬;

        • Lynx

In this case, they did. By doing them the way they did, it affected the overall flow of the story. The pacing was really inconsistent.

  • Dark Zerato

Marie is voiced by Kana. It’s really golden.

  • s07195

Heh, those few parts in the original season where the parts I liked the most. Looking forward to it~

“Welcome to the Velvet Room stupidjerkfaceihateyou, we’ve been expecting you…”

  • ZekeFreek

“and numerous other roles.” is kind of an understatement…

  • Yan Zhao

I feel this is completely unecessary. I;d love this if they didnt already make a Persona 4 Animation which was very faithful to the game already. I just dont see the extra content from P4G enough to warrant a remake of the animation.

But on that note, Marie looks beautiful in this anime.

  • mace

    endless eight anyone?

  • Wagnaria

I wonder if they’ll be fighting with weapons now, and will not just command their personas from the backline.

  • Hexodious

To keep all this nonsense short, people moved away from the Persona 4: Dancing All Night hate to the P4GA hate. Once this blows over, people will find a new target whatever else Atlus is going to announce.

Persona 4 got a Golden version, barely to none hated it here.
Persona 4 The Animation gets it’s Golden version almost anyone hated it here. It’s the same principle, just different product.

Well, whatever floats your boat. I’ll be hyped up about something relevant instead of moaning about a irrelevant product such as an animation. I’m not that much of an anime freak so that might be it that I simple don’t give a damn about it. Oh, and don’t use the milking excuse since Persona 3 got milked way more over the years.

  • Byron Kerrison II

Marie inflated my ego even if she is just programmed to respone to limited selections.

“You have money? That’s awesome. You’re awesome.”

    I’m awesome =) …But that’s how most females act, isn’t it? =(

  • Daniel

I’m kind of excited to see this, I enjoyed P4: Animation. While the dub cast was okay, I’m hoping that they will keep the original dubbing cast this time around. (i.e: Troy Baker as Kanji and Megan Hollingstead as Naoto.)

  • Ric Vazquez

I welcome this since Atlus does not include the japanese audio in their western releases and I could not hear mah waifu Kana Hanazawa in the game.

  • MaidKillua

So much whining. You do all realise that this does not impede in ANY way on the other things you’re saying they should do instead. They are still already making the P3 movies. With a completely different animation team and budget. This is not preventing that from happening. Persona 5 is still coming. Atlus are not making this themselves and presumably aren’t paying for it either. This anime is not slowing down its development. The problem lies where, exactly??? There isn’t a problem, you’re just fishing for one to maintain your absurd hate boner towards anything Persona 4…
