How Mecha Naruto Was Made For Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution

By Robert Ward . May 9, 2014 . 5:05pm

When you’re walking around a Bandai Namco Games showcase and you a see a guy dressed as Sage-mode Naruto, it’s probably Hiroshi Matsuyama, CEO of CyberConnect2, the developers responsible for the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm series. Siliconera recently had a chance to catch up with Matsuyama once again to talk about Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution.

Do you have a favorite characters in the series?

Hiroshi Matsuyama, CEO, CyberConnect2: I’ve been with the series for over ten years, so it’s changed over time. At first, it was Shikamaru, then Uchiha Itachi—but now, it’s without a doubt Uchiha Obito.

How do you decide what kinds of moves to give the different Ninjas in the game? There’s a lot of source material to draw from. Do you ever take some liberties?

Each character has unique abilities in the series, but the series is long, and the characters are always picking up new techniques or styles. So, in the game, we keep up with how the story has developed and make sure to include everyone’s latest abilities. We always have to think about keeping it consistent, stylish, and cool.

Mecha-Naruto was one of my favorite playable characters in the demo. Is he an original character from CyberConnect2? How did he make it into the game?

So, Naruto Shipuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution has the most playable characters in the entire series—over 100, in fact, and that’s not including support characters. Within that, we have an additional mode, called Ninja World Tournament, which is exclusive for the singleplayer mode.

So, in the Ninja War mode and of course the Ninja War Tournament Mode, we asked for a new character from [Naruto author] Kishimoto-sensei, and of course, when we asked, he said, “You know, if we make an original character in the ordinary style, that’s kind of boring; we need to make a character that’ll have impact so that everyone in the world will be surprised by it.” So… Kishimoto-sensei came up with the design for this character, which was quite a surprise for us, too!

Just how far Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution goes into the Naruto storyline?

In Ultimate Ninja Storm 3, because we stopped at the Great Ninja War, at that time, then, we exceeded the story of the animation and were keeping up instead with the original manga. So in Revolution, our story will span the Naruto world up until the final anime episode. In addition to that, we’ve included a new game mode, so we tried to go a bit beyond the story and give a new “ninja” experience to the players.

What kinds of new experiences can people expect in this iteration of Ninja Storm?

In the Ninja World tournament, even though this is a single player mode, the player can battle against three other Ninjas in one place, at the same time. This all-out-brawl mode is new to the series. In addition to playing through this Ninja World Tournament, you can also find sub-quests on your journey through the main quest mode. By just playing through the story, you’ll log about 20 hours of gameplay—but to do the World Tournament and sub quests, you can log up to 30 or 40 hours.

We also have another new mode that’s called Ninja Escapade. This mode includes three episodes which are exclusive to Revolution. Right now, I can only talk about two of the three episodes: one of them is called “The Creation of Akatsuki,” which is based on the Naruto world and, of course, written by Kishimoto-sensei. The second is “The Two Uchiha,” which is the story of Uchiha Shisui and his best friend Uchiha Itachi. It explores the history of their relationship. Those two exclusive stories, with animations, will be implemented in the game.

Uchiha Shisui’s costume and also his character’s design, as well as the costumes of Akatsuki members prior to their characteristic red-cloud robe, are designed by Kishimoto-sensei. So we have two animation episodes we can tell you about now—but we have another one in preparation that we’re keeping up our sleeve. Please look forward to it!

[Note: The third could possibly be the episode about Naruto’s mom.]

It sounds like you work closely with Kishimoto-sensei. Do you guys still maintain some creative freedom with these games or do your decision have to filter through him?

CybeConnect2 proposes episode ideas to Kishimoto-sensei, so while we do come up with our own ideas, he gets to approve on them and help us expand them.

The Naruto anime and manga is a pretty big hit in the Americas, but historically, how have the Ultimate Ninja Storm games done?

The Ultimate Ninja Storm series has sold more than 12 million units worldwide. It’s really interesting to see that, with each release, there are new users coming into the series. For example, with Storm 3, we sold 1.8 million units, the most in the entire series. So we can say that more people are coming with each iteration.

The people who have watched the anime or read the manga before and left the series might come back to the game, play it, and have it reinvigorate their interest in Naruto. It’s a great circulation between anime, manga, and game.

Are there any other technologies you’d like to see the Storm series on? Do you have a target audience in mind when you release the games?

In this iteration, we’re supporting the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Steam. We also like to target all of the casual players who aren’t playing games that much, or watching the anime or manga that much—we want to attract as wide an audience as possible with this game. This includes the hardcore fighting game fans, too! We have refined battle system for this game for that reason, and we’ve also included several foreign-language subtitles to make it globally accessible.

Some of my favorite characters in Naruto are the summons—they’re huge, but, can we expect to see them as playable characters in this game?

Of course! In the battle system called “ultimate jutsu type,” you can make a combo ultimate jutsu, which combines three characters’ Ultimate Jutsu together. One of them—Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura’s—will summon their giant characters and do a huge combo attack on your enemy. Also, if you select Awakening type, we have a mode called “true awakening,” which you can activate and transform into one of these gigantic characters to take advantage of your characters.

In terms of characters, is there any benefit of using one character throughout the entire game, or are you encouraged to switch it up throughout the story and tournament?

Character-wise, when you play through the World Tournament mode, you can unlock more characters. We like to ask all the players to play through this mode to unlock as many characters as possible. Also, each character has a strong-point or weak point, but when you select a character you can select one of three battle types: Ultimate Jutsu Type, Awakening Type, or Drive type.

Each have different strengths and weaknesses. Players can select a character, and then a type, and essentially create their own fighting style and strategy. This new battle system creates a variation that lends itself to an equal playing field.

“So in Revolution, our story will span the Naruto world up until the final anime episode.”

    damn.

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

      HA! Didn’t noticed that part.

    • mujokujeafataotkiva

      YES!!

    • GoldLiger(Bijuu no Sennin)

I think he meant not final but the latest anime episode in September.

    • Pdugna

      God finally it’s ending

      • tylerc23

        It’s not ending, don’t worry

    • KonjikinoSora

Something must have been lost in translation. I think he said “latest episode,” because development for this game should be ending in July or August, and even the manga should be continuing at that point.

      • Suzaku

I don’t know. The manga just started the final fight, more or less. Team 7 versus Madara.

The series is certainly ending this year, probably around September, to coincide with the series’ 15th anniversary.

It’s also been announced that the anime won’t have any more filler this year, starting next week. If it continues with the standard adaptation rate and the manga ends later this year, the anime will probably be reaching the final fight this fall and could conclude as early as next Spring.

Revolution will probably be the final game of the PS3/360 console generation. By the time the game is released in September, the manga and probably the anime will have unveiled all of the characters and their most powerful transformations.

With the possibility of a follow-up DLC (ala the Uchiha Brothers vs Sage Kabuto DLC for Storm 3), I don’t think there’s any reason to think it couldn’t reach the series conclusion.

        • Hentailover

Few problems I have with that. I seriously doubt Kishi would just let game tell his ending before he does in the manga. Also, seriously doubt the whole DLC. Think about it:
“An Epic conclusion to the long running, ultra popular manga series… isn’t even a focus of our game! Yes, it’s just a measly DLC you don’t even get with the primary package of the game!”
Seriously, considering rather divisive nature of DLC, I doubt anyone in CC2 thinks making the ending to the entire Naruto story a downloadable episode is giving it justice. Ending of the story line is something CC2 will glorify as crazy. It would be the crust of the game and it’s entire marketing… “Relive the epic conclusion to Naruto Saga” or something else like that.

          • Shippoyasha

I agree. This is the penultimate game. There’s no way the true final game won’t happen after this one.

The story at this point is way in the manga is way too crazy and would need a lot of elaboration to animate it. I guess they can make it a one big DLC, but it would probably make more sense marketing wise to be another game.

          • Janrabbit

and it will be the first Naruto game on the next gen so would no doubt sell well. It’s kinda what I’m holding out for but I think i’m still gunna end up getting this haha.

  • subsamuel01

I feel Mecha Naruto was a lost opportunity. I wish Kishi created an entirely new unique character with unique moveset like Oda did for One Piece World Red.

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

Should’ve asked Go Nagai for extra moveset consultation.

      • MSJ

Haha, a variation of Big bang punch and Rocket Punch 100 Rapid Shots would have been awesome. Guess I wasn’t the only one who got Mazinger vibes from Mecha Naruto.

        • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

It should be obvious where the inspiration came from, really.

          • Hentailover

People are way too blinded by “OMG TTGL LOL ” to notice that, unfortunately.

          • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

If anything, the only thing similar to TTGL is the Fox Seal Lock mechanism when Mecha Naruto connects to Mecha Kurama. That’s it.

          • Hentailover

Red light in his eye reminds people of TTGL… The footage of his ougi validated those people even more. But actual design is obviously Mazinger and I imagine many people probably don’t even know of Mazinger these days. Not most Naruto fans, that’s for sure.

          • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

It’s the contemporary Generation of this Millennium. Especially when most of the people from the last Generation aren’t doing much to protect their legacies.

          • HentaRobot

Personally, it reminds me more of Gaiking rather than Mazinger

          • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

HIm, too. Gaiking is another Go Nagai Mecha.

  • Feenyx16

So, wait. Did he just imply that the anime was going to end soon?

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

Pretty much. It does seem that way. The Manga’s arc is going on for far too long. This is sounding like the same Bleach situation.

    • mujokujeafataotkiva

cmon man after God madara, aint nobody gonna top that.

    • Nice Boat Quatro

I think he meant they will adapt until the latest anime episode

      • mujokujeafataotkiva

yeah, that could mean future DLC too.

        • Nice Boat Quatro

I believe a Storm 4 will be released

          • mujokujeafataotkiva

            anyone remembers Sage Kabuto DLC?

          • Rayhan PromisedGallery

            so.. Juubito as DLC?

          • Suzaku

He’ll probably be in the game, announced in the coming months. He’s been in the anime opening since the start of this TV season and the game isn’t releasing until September. That fight will be underway by then, if not completely over.

  • logginsmessina

man, yall should asked him about the boss battles

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

So… how many stages are they able to get from the story mode? It’s probably just fighting various version of Obito and Madara…

  • Spirit Macardi

And Mecha Naruto couldn’t have done it without the Mecha Rower x3

    • Hentailover

      Mecha Rower: Yes he could

  • Loli Summoner

I’m seriously going to cry when naruto ends….not even lying.

    • Aspenharls

I probably will too. I more or less grew up with the series.

    • Eilanzer

thank god it will end…They are milking the story for ages and now it´s just a superpowerfest dragon ball Z style =.=”
Ninjas….Meh…They teleport and use kamehameha /o/

      • The Watcher

what do you expect for a 300+ anime ? not every episode is going to be plot plot plot -_-

      • tylerc23

Just read the Manga instead lol

    • Drew Hendrix

How long has it been since the Naruto started, I’m 20 now

      • leingod

        Like 20 years :P

    • Kotori Itsuka

I just hope ost 3 and the unreleased tracks for naruto and naruto shippuden will be released
after it ends, but it’s going to be sad to see naruto end

  • Paul Rodriguez

I don’t even want to think about the series ending.

  • Paul Rodriguez

I’m really looking forward to playing with the newly added characters.

I recently went back and played the Naruto: Path of the Ninja games and I was thinking if they ever took a break from these Ultimate Ninja Storm games I’d like to see a new entry in the Path of the Ninja games with characters from Shippuden. I need me a turn based RPG with a more fleshed out story.

  • Nightstar1994

    lol, mere words.

So far I haven’t even seen a single canon story mode screenshot in Revolution (Obito unmasked, Juubi). It’s more of Generations 2 than Storm 4.

  • Predrag Veljkovic

It would be so cool if they added Guren the crystal style user.

  • Lynx

I kinda wish they’d went full filler with this instead of sticking with the anime/manga. Ironically, the games that have done that have been my favorites. Path of the Ninja 2 [3 in Japan], Uzumaki Chronicles, and what not.

Still, I think I found my main with this.

  • dante

Lol they want this to hit the tournament seen

    • Janrabbit

      I don’t think they do….

      • dante

Well they said they did in the article

        • Janrabbit

They said they refined the battle mechanics to draw in the hardcore fighting game audience, they are just wanting to extend their audience. I mean don’t get me wrong, if they refine the battle mechanics to the point where it takes real skill to win and it becomes a tournament game then that would be awesome but I can’t see that happening anytime soon because they still want to keep the casual fighting game/anime fans interested

  • Vash bane

o.O? wait so naruto will have fox mode (giant) and have his chakra bomb move (not at the same time? that actually sounds cool

  • Jonas Sampaio Santiago

It will be really cool if CC2 add more episodes for Ninja Escapade by DLC! Three episodes is just a little bit of such a level of awesomeness!

  • k.b.a.

over 100 characters sounds nice. and this combat system works for naruto. but damn if i don’t wanna see a traditional balanced fighter in this vein. they’ve done well in 3d, and i don’t want to offend fans, but maybe we’ve had enough C2 games over the years that we can have just one made by aksys? just one?
