New Senran Kagura 2 Videos Show The Pair Battle System And What’s New In Costume Destruction

By Sato . May 9, 2014 . 2:25am

Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson will have a number of new features, like the “Pair Battle” system, where you’ll be pairing up your favorite characters to take on hoards of enemies. Marvelous shares a look at some of the new features with several demonstration videos. (Thanks, Game-Jouhou)

The first video shows off the “Pair Battle” where you put together a tag-team to fight enemies. The partner character will fight on her own, but you’ll also be able to give her orders.

It’s possible to put together tag teams with rivals, as the Senran Kagura characters can be paired with anyone, whether they’re part of the same school or not. When switching places with the partners, you’ll be able to perform actions such as combos and counters.

Above is a look at a special tag-team move that can be done between two characters. The better the pair fights together, the higher damage output the attack will have. Depending on your duo you create, there will be different attack scenes.

Senran Kagura 2 will allow you to switch weapons, too, just for visual effect. While the weapon changing feature is mainly for appearances, you’ll be able to attach special gems to give the weapons powers and elemental attributes.

Some of these include “attack up,” “auto-health recovery,” and “fire invulnerability”.

The above is a look at some pair introduction videos. There will be special intros for certain character match-ups.

Finally, Senran Kagura 2 will be getting new and improved costume destruction features, as this time, you’ll also be able to destroy the clothing of small-fry enemies, as well. Once you defeat an enemy, you’ll be able to “examine” them in the reference library. Clothing will also be destroyed in seamless fashion.

Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson will be released on August 7th, 2014 for Nintendo 3DS.

    The “Pair” battle system.

  • Namuro

    “Examine” eh? Eeh hee hee…

Seriously, though, every game should have a gallery mode where you can view the characters’ model and all. Monster Hunter should have this feature, too!

    • Kumiko Akimoto

You want to look at dinosaurs?

      • Namuro

        Why yes, I do.

  • Sentsuizan_93

    Dat costume destruction tho~ *_*

    • Shippoyasha

They somehow made Life even lewder. Kenichiro Takaki is a hero.

    I’m liking this.

  • Kumiko Akimoto

She just can’t win can she.

    • British_Otaku

      I’ve been wondering about it for a while… >_>
Why is Hibari the only character with a strongly embodied and characterised summon? It even popped up in normal combos starting with Senran Kagura Burst.
Even the scrolls don’t seem to make other characters make more use of them.

      • MXC

Because that’s her only strength amongst the Hanzou students. Asuka has her talent as a shinobi, Ikaruga has her skill with her iai sword-style, Katsuragi has her Physical strength, Yagyuu has her rather strange, while Hibari has prowess with ninja energy(forgot the term used sorry).
        Think of it like this
        Asuka = Fighter/Warrior/Ninja
        Ikaruga = Samurai
        Katsuragi = Monk
Yagyuu = Freelancer(Basically a master of the basics)
        Hibari = Mage/Pegasus Knight/Beastmaster

        • British_Otaku

… I thought her strength was throwing kunai (may be blurring this with gameplay – Air + X is lethal) or something according to the story… I don’t think anyone has really addressed why her one is so prominent in comparison to even secret characters, though the story has reflected on everyone having their own strengths…

I suppose that’s a good reason for me to revisit the story again… >_>

        • Land of Green Pasture

Hibari = Unlimited air butt slap (the easiest way to get 7777 combo trophy that I thought of), nuff said.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

Do you mean why is the only one with an animal summon?

        • British_Otaku

More specifically why she is the only one with a solid one (not just an occasional phoenix of fire for special moves) which has some sort of character.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Ahh well there are few girls like that. To certain degrees it mostly has to do with their mentality towards whatever spirit animal they have, like that other person said Hibari has energy control I believe so the reason why her spirit animal becomes so pronounced likely has to do with that.
Another girl who’s spirit animal is apart of her wear and is something she sometimes uses in attack beyond her specials is Shiki, her’s is a bat and it takes the form of her hate when she transforms.

For a non animal example, Hibiri’s equal from the Gessin school Minori all of her attacks has to do with sweets and food she conjures up.

So I don’t know if this is making any sense but yeah it depends on their mentality, their energy and talents.

          • British_Otaku

It is helping a bit. Good to know some other characters have this element in some fashion in Shinovi Versus.

It still makes more sense in this universe that experienced senpai like Daidouji or teachers should have one which is more clear even if it doesn’t behave like a cartoon character.

The only real “justification” I can drum up is that Hibari said that her family tree of ninja is really really long and MAYBE she inherited a nature for it. The games need to explore this a little better.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Well if it helps, Hibari has the same scouting abilities as Haukra and is just about on the same level. Considering how Hakura can change her robot helpers(Thinking on it now I’m not sure if she actually physically builds them or if they are just apart of her head space) at will.

The shonibi head space( as I like to call it) is pretty complex. Like how One girl her transformation has a different bust size then the one she normally has. It’s based around her own complex. It’s so strong it effects her headspace.

          • British_Otaku

Just going off Burst (even if by the end of the Hanzo story, the good guys win), I find it hard to think of Hibari (a clumsy 1st year) as that close to Haruka (a manipulative 3rd year) in general…

That said, I have heard about how that one girl transforms her bust size so maybe it is something like the Green Lantern effect… It doesn’t really go into why Daidouji can’t summon a tiger that she rides into missions nor why Mirai can’t get her bigger bust (well I guess she is relatively weak for a Hebijo member) but whatever.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Well hibari suffers from that orihime syndrome where she’s actually quite useful but she ends up being less then what she is because of her own insecurities.

Mirai doesn’t have a complex about her breast I don’t think or at least it’s not as bad as ryobi. and I don’t know enough about Daidouji’s head space but it really just depend on the fight I guess.

      • Suicunesol

In the anime, it was said that Hibari’s combat skills were the most lackluster, but she had an unusual talent for materializing her “guardian spirit” more so than the other girls. Sensei said that it had to do with her having a more “flexible” imagination. Naturally, the games showcase each girl’s respective specialty

…and, yes, probably has something to do with her lineage too.

  • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

  • Kumiko Akimoto

It looks like haruka got a new robot helper. or well built a new one

  • D-Omen

Loving all these new features. It’s like Senran Kagura – Big B… udget Version!

  • makubexnas
  • Suicunesol

    Wow. That looks really smooth.

I’m liking the duo special attacks too.

I do think I’ll slightly miss the cinematic special attack sequences though.

    • British_Otaku

The cinematic special attacks still live within the team specials and it will be nice to not lose frames and have most specials flow straight into the gameplay.

EDIT: I’m pretty sure that the special for whatever reason for Yomi was skipped in the second video. They seem to have cinematics still.

  • transferstudentx

if i want to play this do i have too play the other one on 3ds first ? is there anything to miss story related

    • British_Otaku

The Senran Kagura games (at least Senran Kagura Burst – digital only in America) are surprisingly story driven with many missions having more visual novel and exposition length than combat which reflects on the current events as well as backstory into what made the characters what they are today with hints to those coming back to haunt them.

That said, the games are quite easy to follow and this may not be focusing on those points in the story at all though everyone can see that Dogen (a big jerk from the first 3DS game and Vita’s Shinovi Versus) and Orochi are somehow making another appearance.

If you can get SKB for cheap (presumably retail in Europe), help yourself so you have a better understanding of the universe but know that it is an expansion (double the size) developed based on an experimental project from the first year of the 3DS’s life. It isn’t perfect.

    • CozyAndWarm

      It kinda seems that way

  • Guest

    dat 240p LOLOLOLOLOLOL

    • Kumiko Akimoto

      Still looked nice

      • Robert Backland

        really though?

        • Kumiko Akimoto

          Yeah actually, surprisingly so.

        • Kouji Tamino

          Yes. Graphics streetwalkers go home.

  • CozyAndWarm

“Once you defeat an enemy, you’ll be able to “examine” them in the reference library.”
    I like

    • British_Otaku

I enjoyed this idea in the One Piece Unlimited games (especially when we got to play as fodder or final bosses in the Wii installments) and the Attack on Titan 3DS game too.

It only makes sense once you beat up the enemy, you can interrogate them.

Wouldn’t be surprised if this game let us “examine” major foes or friends in the gallery just like in Ages of Amazones above… Orochi, Dogen and Masamune’s reactions would be great.

      • hng qtr

Thanks for reminding me that we’ll never get this game…or any non-Atlus 3DS dungeon crawler.

        • Zizal

I think the western fans should ask for toushin toshi having played it myself I think it’s one of the best games on the system.

          • CozyAndWarm

Oh man I thought I was the only one who wanted Toushin Toshi. I’m gonna import it soon but I’d totally buy an English copy as well.

          • British_Otaku

I jumped the gun and imported that one even if my Japanese is far from enough and I could play one of the numerous fantranslated installments in the series (interestingly enough, the first half a dozen installments are legally open source I hear so I’m not even recommending piracy of games no one would never profit on).

I should get back to playing it before I add Island Days and Senran Kagura 2 which are also bound to be text heavy.

  • hng qtr

So Yomi babbling about bean sprouts is as annoying to enemies as it is for us?

    • Kumiko Akimoto

That’s why it was fast forwarded.

  • fyi1191

Oh we will be hearing those “xxx-chan” a lot.

  • Firion Hope

I honestly thought the first game was pretty full on features, but this one is looking to outdo it

  • The battle system here looks amazing! I know we just got word on Shinovi Versus, but yeah…….. I want this too! >_< lol

    Everything I saw was MARVELOUS.

  • Zonic505

“Once you defeat an enemy, you’ll be able to “examine” them in the reference library.”

Glad this small feature made it in. I remember playing Burst & wished there was a gallery to view the models for the enemies.

    • British_Otaku

We just need a sound test full of all of the combat voice clips. Burst was also missing out on that.

  • shuyai

i never thought i did say this but those boob are so big they look grotesque especially this pic.

Dont know why but only senran kagura make me feel this way

    • Kroz

I think the bewbs are great :3

    • MSJ

      dafuq…is wrong with you?

      love me some ham <3

    • Shippoyasha

Nan Yaegashi (artist of Senran Kagura) does a great job of making the girls look cute though. There is a sense of plumpness to the girls and the artbooks are a great showcase for that style.

  • Kornelious

Looks cool. Don’t really understand the jump from 3DS to VIta…and then back to 3DS but whatever. Hopefully Xseed will pick this up in the future :)

And I forget there was this, and Dekamori…..But was there one more?

    • British_Otaku

The amount of platform jumping seems moderate in comparison to say Kingdom Hearts with the main series being on the 3DS and spinoffs on the Vita (though Shinovi Versus is one hell of a spinoff).

Pretty sure, Xseed are revving up for this already. :P

    • Kouji Tamino

The main series is on the 3DS, spin-offs on the Vita. This was established by the creator a year ago.

      • Kornelious

Oh uhhhhh……*cough* My bad, I thought it was the sequel because it takes place right after the events of the first game :P

  • SetzerGabbiani

I’m liking the gem feature. Could have definitely used it in the later missions in Burst when trying to get past those annoying bowgun users in Yin mode.

  • Zer0faith

Banderas sums up our reactions best.

  • Kroz

Wow such a improvement over the first

  • TiamatNM

“Clothing will also be destroyed in a seamless fashion.” – is this just a pun or does it mean the costume destruction won’t mess up your combos like it does in Burst?

    • British_Otaku

Hopefully both, though we haven’t seen gameplay to know how well the boss damage will be tied into gameplay even if it looks like the player and generic enemies will be seamless.

When fighting a human boss (I assume there must be one whether it is based on sparring like some Hibari vs Yagyu moments or the last trailer hinting at most of classic Hebijo being possessed or something), the seamless stuff may look better but still could grant invinciblity frames or mess up a combo… Perhaps, that isn’t a problem as it gives armour/clothes a more deliberate purpose just like in Gundam Battle Assault when players overheat and a combo is cut short.

  • Freakmasta

The gameplay is really fast! Let’s hope there won’t be any lag.

  • MSJ

tag team mode, woohoo. looks awesome, my YagyuuXAnyone team FTW <3

  • J_Joestar

    Bean Sprouts!
    <3 Yomi

For the pair specials though, i wonder if every pair will actually have a unique attack. It is hard to tell since the ones that have been shown are basically "Other Faction Rival" and "Closest Friend within Faction"
or will matching those with a lower relationship give you a generic attack like how Yagyu+Katsuragi had a generic intro compared to Yagyu+Hibari.

And also how would it be for the team leaders? as Asuka and Homura typically don't have a specific in-faction character they are tied to.

  • leingod

This looks like… 10 times better than Burst. Awesome! I hope the game itself looks as smooth as it does on these videos.

  • Hinataharem

I like what I see. I always loved special character interactions
