New Dragon Ball Game In Development For PlayStation 4

By Sato . May 16, 2014 . 12:32am

The latest issue of V Jump magazine reports that Bandai Namco are working a new Dragon Ball game for the PlayStation 4, making it the first Jump series to get a game on the console. (Thanks, Otakomu.)

As seen in the above image, the game features infamous villains such as Vegeta, Frieza, and Cell. It also shows someone with red hair and sporting a jacket with a Capsule Corp logo and maybe some sort of Scouter, looking at Goku and Vegeta fighting during their memorable first bout.

While the details from the magazine are scant, they also show images of a mysterious shrine-looking place, and something that looks similar to the time machine that Trunks used to travel through time.

Dragon Ball for PlayStation 4 is currently in development for PlayStation 4. It is also being made for PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

It’s pretty weird that this isn’t on Vita too. BoZ seemed to do well enough on it, which finally awoken the western branches of BN.

    • leingod

I’d love it on Vita too… as long as it’s nothing like Battle of Z. That one sucked big time.

  • 『ED−X』゜〜★* 平和

Hope they go back to the Budokai fighting style everything else after tenkaichi was just getting ridiculous . . .

    • JonathanisPrimus

That scan makes it obvious that it’s another Spike Chunsoft (Budokai Tenkaichi/Raging Blast) game.

      • Reanau

They’re not developing DB games anymore however? could be Art Dink again.

        • Bobby Jennings

          It’s not Artdink.

Battle of Z failed so badly that they probably didn’t get another chance.

This looks to be like the current Arcade DBZ game.

(Which is fantastic if i may add

          • JonathanisPrimus

Battle of Z shipped a similar amount of units to everything Spike made on PS3/360. Given it didn’t launch in the holiday season, that’s a good result.

          • Bobby Jennings

Oh okay. Thanks for info :D

          • Slayven19

Yes that’s what I want as well, give me a game similar to the arcade.

          • Bobby Jennings

Indeed. The only ones I truly hated were Battle of Z and Ultimate Tenkaichi. The rest were fun and good to me.

    • Reanau

Budokai to me was stale, I’d prefer a new 2D fighter to be like super Budokan… or at least something that actually gave the characters different fighting animations. Dimps were so lazy.

    • Kotori Itsuka

      Hope it’s like tenkaichi 3

      • For the roster yes, but not for the gameplay. Tenkaichi was actually a step down from Budokai 3 in that regard.

        • James Reilly

Depends if you prefer traditional 2D or the more accurate explorable 3D environments.

          • GOLD

focus should be on fighting not exploration in my opinion. as soon as i saw this article i was hoping the game would be the successor to boudokai 3.

        • machomuu

Gonna disagree on the roster. Tenkaichi 3 had too many clone/generic characters. Sooo many of them had things like “Full Power Beam” or things of that nature. If they do make a roster of that size, they need to get creative with their movesets.

          • Revolver Jesus Super Pimp

            fuuuuuuucking all my yes.

        • Kotori Itsuka

I actually enjoyed the tenkaichi 3 gameplay better. I liked the combos and the enviorment(sorry for bad spelling), but that’s my opinion

        • Samsara09

My only isssue with tenkaichi 3 was how so many useful caracters had those “unique attacks” High speed rush, high power rush, etc. If they were gonna do this,it would be better not to make them playable.

    • Damn straight. I recently bought the Budokai HD Collection and I now remember what its like to actually have fun.

      • GOLD

i plan to get it at some point in the near future.

  • evilkaz

    [Groans Audibly]

Seriously, just take a break from DBZ bamco, give me more info on that PS4 gundam game.

    • They don’t have a choice. If they don’t release a DBZ game yearly, they lose the license.

      • OOOH! Must prevent this game from reaching the masses, then. Let’s kill 2 birds with 1 stone. xD

    • JonathanisPrimus

There’s been two console Gundam games in the last six months and you’re asking Bandai to take a break from Dragon Ball in favour of milking that even further?

      • evilkaz

        I’m biased.

At least those aren’t all fighting games and have variety. I’m tied of going through the same 3-4 sagas and same fights over and over again.

        • JonathanisPrimus

No one’s forcing you to play them.

  • Somebodyissilent

Whoa it’s been years since the last DBZ game. Glad to them making a comeback.

    • Suriel Cruz

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z?!… or you was being sarcastic?!

      • P4ine

dude how could that not have been sarcastic

        • Suriel Cruz

          Just asking. xD

      • Somebodyissilent

        Being sarcastic.

  • kliskur

Maybe that red hair guy is a custom character… You know… Player made character.

Man… I remember one dragon ball game where Goku use a spirit bomb and literally destroy everything.. 1 hit and the other player is dead. It can be launch 1 sec during the fight… Lol..

  • Suriel Cruz

No. Dragon Ball Z games lost its track and therefore have become a mess. Another one will probably assure this and eventually FUCK my memories of the great series it was. Is not about the graphics anymore, but about the gameplay and how this one combines to the actual world of Dragon Ball Z. IMO.

  • NightzeroAX

    Budokai Tenkaichi 4

  • Spider-Man

Art style looks promising. I seriously loved Burst Limit’s style the most. Those Super Saiyan pupils looked amazing, fierce. Can’t wait to see what the gameplay looks like. I could use more PS4 games.

    • Super Saiyans aren’t even supposed to have pupils, so thats slightly inaccurate.

      • machomuu

Super Saiyans have green eyes. They even go out of their way to do a closeup in the anime to show you Goku’s transition from pupils to no pupils to green pupils.

      • Fox

It’s not even remotely accurate. DBZ games should try to emulate either Toriyama’s original manga art, or at least the anime’ art. The modern styles are too flashy, too “3D”. This is one respect where the Naruto games really ought to be emulated.

Anyway, what concerns me is the developer. Studio d’Artdink has a lot of talent, but their forte is mech combat games, so I really hope they stick to that. And Spike is… incompetent, so I really hope they didn’t get the license back.

      • WolfDuo

        • Achned Walters

          Super Saiyan 1 and 2 don’t ^_^

          3 does… have a look

      • Spider-Man

We know that, but for this it was something new and different. I liked it.

  • Amagidyne

Hmm, if Dragonball online was still up and running, I’d think there was a connection between this and that (time machines, new people present at important battles, e.t.c), but as it is, I’m intrigued.

I just hope it’s actually good, DBZ games are a long way away, quality wise, from how they used to be. I actually want to be excited to play one again.

  • Tonton Ramos

I sure hope this DBZ is competitive unlike other games also quarter and half circle needs to be in this. But nope it only attracts you know whose people…

  • Ixbran

    “New Dragon Ball Game”

  • Federico

The only thing i’ve like recently is the hero mode from ultimate tenkaichi. If they could do something like that again and make it better i would so be down for this.

  • mujokujeafataotkiva

they should give CC2 to make a DBZ with the current Storm3 engine, it would fit like a glove, honestly i never liked that most of the DBZ games were too much airborne, they should keep things on the ground IMO.

    • Romero Santos

“most of the DBZ games were too much airborne”

It’s DBZ, what’d you expect? Also, CC2 said they’re won’t work on a DBZ game.

      • leingod

So… they will work on one? Double negation.

        • Romero Santos

          …Shit. Fixed that.

  • fyi1191

Another one? DB fans will never get tired of them I guess.

    • Samsara09

      I did,lol.

  • Hagaren

Well, unfortunately it’s not Zenkai Battle Royale but it does look pretty nice. Hopefully it will be good. Looks like character creation is also back.

  • David García Abril

I haven’t played a single “Dragon Ball Z” game this generation.

If this one is good enough, maybe I’ll go back to them.

    • Hagaren

Neither have I. I’m considering getting Raging Blast 2, though, it looks ok…

    • leingod

The past generation’s DBZ games sucked :/ … the best ones were on the PS2. Hope this one breaks the bad streak.

    • British_Otaku

Good Dragon Ball licensed games last generation include Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butoden, Dragon Ball Z: Attack on the Saiyans, Infinite World, Shin Budokai, Shin Budokai 2, Dragon Ball Origins, Dragon Ball Origins 2, Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and Budokai Tenkaichi 3…

Revenge of King Piccolo is okay.

Basically, the PS3/Xbox 360 got nothing notable, the Wii got some good games which were on the PS2 sometimes with bonus features, the portables got tons of great games and the PS2 got a late “Budokai 4” in Infinite World.

  • leingod

Hope it’s less like Battle of Z and more like the Tenkaichi Budokai / Budokai games. Even the PSP ones were tons better than Battle of Z.

Also, not on the XBOX One? Ouch. MS should try and rectify that.

  • Revolver Jesus Super Pimp

The only DBZ game I still get enjoyment out of from last gen is Raging Blast 2, everything else sucked. I miss Tenkaichi 2….

    • Sentsuizan_93

      I know that feel. ;_;
Haven’t bought a single DBZ game since Tenkaichi 3.

      • Kango234

  • Loli Summoner

You can not deny, this game is gonna look AMAZEING on the ps4.
Just picture how amazing the enegy waves are gonna look!

    • subsamuel01

Can’t deny that, but the main problem with Dragonball Z games is gameplay. Seems no developer can come up with a single battle system that works.

      • GOLD

        except for Dimps

        • Christopher Nunes

I enjoyed both the Budokai and Tenkaichi gameplay… Raging Blast was also have nice DBZ gameplay.

  • Sachiko Shinozaki

Looks like Dragon Ball Ultimate Tenkaichi 2….

  • D. Collins

WARNING WARNING!!! New Dragon Ball game announced!!!! PROCEED WITH CAUTION!! LOL.

  • I still want a DBZ game for the 3ds similar to Buu’s fury.

  • Cephrien

Just bought myself a Ps4 the other day. Not gonna lie. The thought of a Dragon Ball on this awesome console is making me hype as shit.

  • roockie112

Well I can tell the graphics look Amazing I just pray to god that is not like Ultimate Tenkaichi lol

    • leingod

      … or battle of Z :P

  • ZetaSiren

This game better be like budokai tenkaichi 3. Oh please be like budokai tenkaichi 3.

    • leingod

      That’d be awesome!

    • God

I’m happy with whatever they decide to give me… as long as it’s not another Ultimate Tenkaichi, it was like playing rock-paper-scissors with Dragon Ball characters…

  • WolfDuo

I just hope this game isn’t over-simplified like all the dbz games since Budokai. I really liked the Budokai series. It actually took skill and timing to pull of ultimate specials, instead of just spamming a button.

  • TheHolypopeofgaming

How many Dragon Ball games can you make before it gets Stale? Akira Toriyama is going to have to create new characters just to compensate for it.

    • JonathanisPrimus

Well, I guess it’s a good thing Toriyama has been making new Dragon Ball content again?

      • TheHolypopeofgaming

There’s the movie what else is he doing?

        • JonathanisPrimus

We also got the prequel, Jaco: The Galactic Patrolman, which introduced Goku’s mother in a bonus chapter.

          • TheHolypopeofgaming

    • J_Joestar

Well Goku’s Mom is still fairly recent.

  • Kornelious

looks interesting…..I really hope they listen to fans and go back to the Budokai/Tenkaichi style will be brought back and not something like the last two DBZ games….

  • Jaikaru

I’m still waiting for another DBZ that’s like Budokai 3, not Tenkaichi.. just Budokai. I somehow never really enjoyed Tenkaichi or Raging Blast, even though I did play them through.

  • simon corbett

Hopefully on X1 too, I really do hate exclusives.

    • subsamuel01

This has only been announced in Japan which is why there’s no X1, I’m sure they would released it for both when they announce an international release date.

      • simon corbett

I guess that makes sense but still frustrating.

    • leingod

Yeah, hope they announce it for X1 later too.

  • chosen105

Im always scared when a new dbz game is announced but this one looks pretty good. The detail on the energy wave looks awesome XD

  • Godmars

Can’t be much of a “next gen” title if its showing up on the PS3/360.

    • subsamuel01

Hopefully its a PS4 game being ported to the PS3/360 instead of the other way around.

  • Nice Boat Quatro

About time. It’s been less than six months without a new Dragon Ball game

    • TheGameTagerZ

I really hope thats sarcasm lol

  • It’s not coming to wii u. Color me shocked… *sigh*

  • The_Superior_Spider-Mon

I hope Son Goten. Trunks, Vegeto, Son Gohan. Son Gokou, Vegeta, Gotenks can go Super Saiyan mid-battle.

  • Kroz

okay, this is going to be the last chance i give a new dbz game a chance (mainly cuz its the first of the new generation). But i swear if this fails its beyond me, we got so much crap like battle of z and even worse ultimate tenkaichi. yet they have great assets like the budokai’s, tenkaichi 1 to 3, and more. please just look at those games and give us a stylish over the top dbz game with depth. PLEASE!

  • Lifestreamer

I’m waiting for a console port of DBZ Zenkai Battle Royale, but I’ll pay attention to this new project.

    • Slayven19

Ah, glad to see people aware of that game, its what DBZ should be like.

  • Paul Rodriguez

I needs me a Dragon Ball Z/GT RPG or something like Dragon Ball Origins, Revenge of King Piccolo, or Legacy of Goku (I’ll pretend Sagas doesn’t exist). I have 18 Dragon Ball fighting games spanning multiple consoles/handhelds and generations. I do not need any more.

  • AuraGuyChris

Will this game help the franchise on consoles, or will its Spirit Bomb blow up on its face again?

  • MaskedHeroxx

Maybe they finally mixed budokai with tenkichi. Budokai game but tenkichi fighting mechanics. (I know that will never happen tho)

But I cant wait to fire a Kamehameha on my ps4

  • Sol badass

Just because those screens are so gorgeous its retarded, and this is the first dbz game on ps4, Im gonna give this a chance. But seriously. Please dont suck. There hasnt been a good dbz game since tenkaichi 3. The RB series was just a shinier tenkaichi, ultimate tenkaichi doesnt even need a description. We all know how that was. And battle of Z could have been good, had it been made by someone else. Just please namco. Please rekindle the fire that used to burn in the hearts of dbz games

  • Spirit Macardi

Don’t stop! Don’t stop! We’re in luck now!
Don’t stop! There’s more cash to be found!
    We can make more money
All you have to do is GO GO milk it dry!

  • Lloyd Christmas

Well I happened to skip the past two DBZ games so I’m not as burnt out on it as some of you guys. The idea of a next-gen Dragonball game is exciting so I’m hoping it’s not the same old song and dance.

  • revenent hell

Oh, once upon a time I was really in to Dragon Ball but it never really led me in the direction of the games.
The ones I played where ok but I had kind of hoped they where fighting games that followed the direction of an RPG kind of like the anime/comics. And what story modes where there where a little disappointing to me.

  • Slayven19

I just want the 4 player arcade DBZ game, why won’t they give it to us :(. Guess they are still making to much off the arcade to do that..

  • Learii

I hope is not the samething over and over again

  • Masa

Meh, can’t see this being any good, haven’t been a good DBZ game in years! The people currently making these games suck.

  • pokeslob

why does Dragon Ball hype never get old :D gahhh I’m so excited!!!

  • Christopher Nunes

Judging by that red-haired character… does that mean the Character Creation system from Ultimate Tenkaichi will be back? And it seems to be improved as you couldn’t have a scarf on Trunk’s jacket before.

I see a little of the Dragon Ball Online influence as the players go back in time during the most monument parts of DBZ like Goku VS Vegeta to help out the good guys. Considering they use the Capsule Corp Time Machine to do so… so it looks like the good old Tenkaichi gameplay (from the screen with Cell) with What If scenarios involving Created Characters… if that is the cast.

I REALLY hope they bring back the GT cast, even if GT wasn’t well-received… even if the story was a bit of a mess I loved the characters introduced. Let’s have a SSJ4 Gogeta VS Super Saiyan God Goku or Beerus battle! I would love to see that! ^_^

I surprisingly enjoyed Battle of Z, but I want the good old fighting system of Tenkaichi and Raging Blast or something improving on them. Perhaps bring back the Tenkaichi 2 gameplay and improve it?

  • Not another one… lol

  • Noor Mahmoud

What’s funny is that J Stars Victory Versus will probably have better DBZ gameplay.

  • Samsara09

I think that they are over-milking it.If they keep on releasing so many games, especially bad,on a row,it will pulverize the series’s reputation in the video game sector.
Ever since Budokai tenkaichi 3,every time I see a new DBZ game,i automatically cringe…and I don’t think I am alone. This is what I mean. The bad reputation of most games after it contaminated the perception of many people about DBZ games. This is bad.

    • WingsOfEternity

Definitely agree. What people enjoyed was a clean, free moving, and fast paced fighter, with an enormous roster of characters. Nobody asked for shinier graphics or more gimmicky controls. I totally miss the days when me and my brother would boot up BT3 and could spend an entire afternoon just going team battle mode + all random.

  • Vash bane

looks crazy shiny but that’s not important lol I am more curious of the red hair character.

  • Syn

Ahhhhh fugde cakes, just like the rest of the people here, am hoping for a Budokai/Tenkaichi 3 level of depth and character roster(I mean we had close to 100 players in T3 alone on the freaking PS2!!!!!), if this bombs however, atleast i can hope for a Tenkachi 3 HD version with trophies…..That could keep me happy for a few more years…….But they just gotta get this right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Common Namdai!!!!!! just look at the ps2 era of fighters and the success they garnered, is it so hard! ……I hope to god its not some semi Naruto clone with crap combos or Battle of z mechanics….that will just be………… sad.

  • Koibito888

I want a game where characters fight like they do in the anime, you know, like an anime is supposed to do. I want a game where each character has actual combos and there is no random ki blast button. The jump game did it and it’s the first game to actually capture how DBZ characters fight. I want this to be a DBZ game, not a game that happens to have DBZ characters in it.

  • Chee Yang

I like the look of Goku punching Frieza in the face. But I still want Dimps to develop the game.

  • kenshinx13

Well.. if they are sticking to the battle royale battle system or something similar with more than 2 characters duking it out. PLEASE BRING BACK COUCH MULTIPLAYER THAT IS WHAT KEPT ME FROM BUYING BATTLE OF Z
