Hyrule Warriors Screenshots Shows Link, Impa, And Shia The Black Witch

By Spencer . May 22, 2014 . 3:20am

Hyrule Warriors, a crossover between Tecmo Koei’s Dynasty Warriors series and The Legend of Zelda, has at least two playable characters. Link fights with a one-handed sword and Impa from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword uses a heavy sword.

Players will fight on Hyrule Plains and in Lanayru Valley to rescue Zelda from Shia the Black Witch. Screenshots of Valga and Wizro, two other antagonists in Hyrule Warriors, are below too.

    It’s… beautiful.

    Also: cool looking chainmail, Link!

  • Egil

I dont like musou games but i think im gonna get this one, looks pretty damn cool

  • Ann Weschenfeller

It does look great. I think Musou + Zelda can make a very nice mix.

Team Ninja’s… uh… “influence” sure is apparent with Shia there…

    • Thatguy

With that avatar, you should be happy

    • waku waku

Nintendo actually letting that fly is what intrigues me the most.

      • Aaron K Stone

It’s not like Veran from OoA was that much more modestly dressed.

        • GH56734

Midna was nude all the time.
          Also, Big Fairies.

          • David García Abril

Neither of those were played for fan service.

        • David García Abril

Yeah, because that tiny 8-bit sprite showed her off so well…

Seriously, people, stop mentioning Veran as she was a meaningful example. She’s not.

          • NeptuniasBeard

“Yeah, because that tiny 8-bit sprite showed her off so well…”

You talk as though there isn’tOFFICIAL designs of her either. Which yes, shows it off so well

          • David García Abril

You mean that single piece of artwork that doesn’t appear that prominently in the promotional material and apart from a cleavage doesn’t depict her in a particularly fan service-ish way?

Yeah, that has a lot of weight…

          • NeptuniasBeard

“apart from the cleavage”? The hell kind of counter is that? Hell, “apart from the cleavage” this chick doesn’t have much going for her either. “Apart from the cleavage” most fanservice chicks are downright G-rated.

The point is, that art exists, and it got approved by Nintendo in the freaking 90’s, when they were even more uptight and “family friendly” than they are now. But even in 2014, some people still won’t let the idea of “super kiddy” Nintendo go. Sure, they aren’t quite as liberal as they could be. But they are a far cry of where they used to be

      • NeptuniasBeard

Your knowledge on Nintendo seems a bit outdated

      • Ryudo9

The fairy in Zelda TP was topless

    • DeadLineDance

You could probably blame Tecmo Koei too, she gives off a definite Nohime vibe to me.

  • Tonton Ramos

Oh god at this point we will see a Future SSB character with potential like Impa!

  • Derek E Nay

    Dibs on Wizro!

  • Fainaru Luna

Wizro sure look’s like a certain ghost salesman to me….

    • Nope, do your research. It’s from Zelda 1 : wizrobbe.

      • MakoSoldier7

he just said he looks like him, which is true.

      • Armane

Look again, wizzrobes had two eyes in LoZ (and every successive appearance).

        • Fen Y

And yet, it’s still an obvious reference to wizzrobes.

Zelda enemies often change details like this. Just like Iron Knuckles are Anubis-like in some games.

Are you, like, new to Zelda? ^^

  • Wizro is technically a Wizrobe right?
    then is Valga Volvagia?

    • Göran Isacson

      Oh… ooooh… OOOOOOOOHHHH!

Okay if all the enemies are semi-sort of “redesigns” of old enemies, like Volvagia and Wizrobe, I’m kind of interested in Shia now. What does SHE represent? Am I the only one who’s sort of seeing a similarity to the Twilight Mirror there, in that picture of her and a big portal?

      • she could be a Gerudo or Twili ancestor

        • Göran Isacson

Eeh, I see more Twili in her than gerudo. Her hair is white and her skin is too pale.

          • her skin is darker than a normal Hylian.

mebeh a stretch but how bout ikana valley people?

          • Göran Isacson

Huh, the Ikana Valley… I admit it is a stretch, but it would indeed be cool to see that place and culture revisited.

It could also be that Shia is a completely original character, because while Valgas helmet is a dead ringer for Volvagias head, I can’t really see any design similarities between Shia and any other enemy I’ve seen so far. There is no symbol I recognize or bird-nosed enemy that immediately comes to mind… save of course for the Crescent Moon symbol on her chest. Has the Crescent Moon ever been a symbol in some earlier Zelda game?

          • Jason Ryer

            Shes got to be twinrova.

          • that could make sense but she’s a bit too white haired xD

          • Jason Ryer

could be a nuked hair like when fire and ice make steam. The twinrova thing was a guess because of how obvious i found it lol.

          • Göran Isacson

Oooh, that IS a possibility. Now that I look closer she also has TWO colored gems in her hat/mask, one red, one blue, and there is precedent in earlier games for Twinrova enacting an evil plot to resurrect Ganon… still, I am a bit iffy on that because again, she seems a bit too pale to be a Gerudo, and just having her features in a mask with her face being “generic pretty-looking Koei-girl” makes my inner character designer sad. Still, can’t really deny the similarities. Would also be interesting if she is also actually as old as Koume and Kotake, and the form we see here is a spell of hers.

Also also- Twinrova doesn’t have a Crescent Moon anywhere that I can see in her original design, buut I might just be focusing too much on that detail and it is in reality just something extra added by the designer here.

          • Jason Ryer

How many evil witches are there in zelda though that the player fights. Also *points to flame tat on open leg*.

          • Göran Isacson

Veran is another possibility too, yet someone gave another interesting interpretation upthreads- Meg, one of the Four Poe Sisters from the Forest Temple in Ocarina of Time, and that the white hair indicates she is Sheikah. There ARE in fact a lot of design similarities between them (mostly in color and mask design), but the blue and red gems and flame tattoo could also point to Twinrova… I guess we’ll have to see whether she has elemental attacks, or if she creates clones of herself in order to call which character she derives from. Also, even if there is NO evidence of her being a Sheikah whatsoever so far, just speculation, I have to admit it would be a neat twist to have a Sheikah working for the bad guys, for once.

          • Jason Ryer
          • Armane

She’s based on one of the Poe sisters from the Forest Temple; Meg, the last one you kill.

Her white hair suggests she was a Shiekah.

          • Göran Isacson

HUH. Well slap me silly and call me Sally, there really ARE some damn convincing similarities now that you point it out. Purple clothes, “beak” nose, similar headgear, purple energy, the works. And a Sheikah turned traitor IS a pretty neat twist as well. If she ever starts splitting up into clones, the theory will have even more weight to it.

      • 古戸ヱリカ

        Boobs. She represents boobs.

        • Göran Isacson

… Welp, I gotta admit that I’ve got no counter-arguments there. 1+Point to you.

    • So classic Zelda bosses have been turned into Musou characters, huh? They might even remain bosses.

      • maybe some of the more obscure bosses too, we might be able to see humanoid forms of some

  • NintendoPSXTheSecond

I’m loving these character designs so much more than I thought I would!

  • I have a feeling I’m going to “enjoy” this game more than I should. xD

  • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owl

I’m really liking Shia’s design right there…I’m a sucker for women with tan skin. Haha.

  • KingGunblader

The character designs are pretty nice, but how about we go ahead and blow the lid off of the rest of the playable characters?

    • David García Abril

      Patience, my friend.

  • isotrex

Would love to play as Wizro. :P

  • ffboi7

Inevitable rule 34 Shia. Other then that hoping for playable Ganon, Tingle and Shiek :D

    • Herok♞

inevitable? knowing the internet it probably already exists

    • Sentsuizan_93

      It’s practically a waiting game~ :P

  • Kornelious

C’mon! announce a western release date already! This is The Legend of Zelda with BadAss x 100 :P

  • Masa

Wow, Link looks better in this than any other Nintendo game hes been in, xD.
    Those visuals are nice.

    • Brion Valkerion

Really like the designs too! Just going to be blunt about it though, Tecmo Koei is known to use bullshots aka edited screen shots for their warriors titles adding extra effects and filters not in the actual game.

Hopefully the newer Warriors titles will have them stopping that though!

      • David García Abril

That’s why I don’t have any high hopes in this game in terms of graphics. The “Warriors” franchise has always had mediocre graphics at best.

        • Masa

Yeah the textures in the Dynasty Warriors games are awful.

  • ギャビン

It looks really nice, I’m happy I have a Wii U.

  • Namuro

Looking at Link’s design, I really wish that they would make a Figma of this version as well!

Also, let me just say it again, Impa is hot! Oh baby!

  • Yan Zhao

Just give us a western release date already! I bought a Wii U since last Winter when this was announced waiting for this!

  • Pythia Brixham

I’m someone who doesn’t really like Zelda games all that much, but… I like Link’s scarf… I WANT IT! I WILL MAKE IT!

    • David García Abril

That blue scarf has become the biggest achievement of the game so far in terms of fan reception! lol

Who knows, maybe it will become a new staple of his design, just like the chain mail did in “Twilight Princess”.

    • leingod

Apparently scarfs are a thing now. Just look Sonic :P

    • E.T.993

Sonic has a scarf. Link has a scarf. PROTOMAN CONFIRMED FOR SMASH BROS. 3DS/WiiU for 2014:Year of the scarves.

  • Shia :*

  • fairysun

The concept art for Lanayru Valley is gorgeous. I don’t remember which Zelda game it is from.(Shame on me as Zelda fan :( )

  • phayroent

I’m surprised Nintendo is letting them have a big breasted female character with so little coverage. They don’t care about boobs, but trading ID’s so you can play games together is too much to allow?

    • kyrt

expect nintendo of america to censor it like they have with all their other titles.

      • J_Joestar

I dunno, look at Aversa in FE:A,

But if you wanna show female butt, then you gotta cover that with a curtain (that might make it look ambiguously dirtier)

      • Lynx

        I seriously doubt they will.

Also; Veran from Oracle of Ages.

  • NeptuniasBeard

Pretty cool that we get a female big bad. Until Ganon pulls a Ganon, of course, but it’s still a treat

  • Sentsuizan_93

    This is looking seriously hype…
My interest has piqued considerably. :)

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Is it a bad thing to think They made Link , Impa and so far the other NPCs look better then they did in past games?

    Valga is Volvagia from OOT

  • John Lawson

Looks like Temco is a Ys Fan…

  • Frankie

The article says the release date is August 28th, I thought it was the 14th?

  • SetzerGabbiani

I’m assuming that the enemy characters will become playable after a certain point, so no real worries about useable characters. Their character models are way too detailed to remain one-off bosses…and this is a Warriors game after all, so yeah…

And Shia figma incoming…soon, I can sense it.

  • Smoke Cat

Hellooo Shia! Hyrule plains look gorgeous

  • D. Collins

    Dat Scarf tho!!
    I wanna play this!

  • God

Huh? No TheGioG comment? Where is our favourite pocket sized hero when you need him?

  • Learii

Link look like a woman on this one well almost

  • MrJechgo

So… it happens during the events of Skyward Sword? Huh… how they gonna add more characters if they would be off timeline from SS?

  • ShootThatWay

Maybe a playable Goron? I dunno, I just want to roll around on the plains.

  • WhyWai

guess they added boobies to Zelda series…

  • Ace

The first stage will be the Yellow Turban Rebellion

  • Virevolte

    The scarf is courage.
    The scarf is wisdom.
    The scarf is power.

  • Kelohmello

Can’t wait for this game. I love me some Musou-styled action.

  • TheExile285

    Looking good

  • Vash bane

valga …. is giving off that lu bu vibe
