Guilty Gear Xrd Sign Console Screenshots Show 3D Rendered Models Made To Look 2D

By Sato . June 4, 2014 . 6:02pm

We recently got some news on Guilty Gear Xrd Sign and how it will allow for cross-play between the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 versions of the game. Famitsu follows up with some screenshots showing off some of the game’s new characters and features.

As previously reported, the PlayStation 4 version of Guilty Gear Xrd Sign will run the game at 1080p.

The above is a look at the somnambulist Bedman, one of the new characters, who fights in a rather unorthodox style.

New is Ramlethal Valentine, who was previously a boss character in the arcade version of the game, before becoming playable in an update. She has a unique fighting style that involves using a sword that can be used in single and dual-sword modes.

Not only has the gameplay evolved in Guilty Gear Xrd Sign, but the cut-scenes are also getting a twist. The above image might look like it’s straight out of an animated scene, but similar to the way the combat looks, it’s all made using 3D models that has a 2D look to it.

By using 3D models, Dust Attacks and other combat features can be shown in a more dynamic fashion with different camera angles.

Guilty Gear Xrd Sign will be released for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 this Fall in North America.

  • The whole game looks gorgeous, can’t wait to have it.

  • MrJechgo

Huh… wasn’t that already confirmed with the cinematic super moves and arcade intros and endings?

Yeah, it’s impressive, but that’s rather old news, no?

    • Sato

Yeah, it’s Famitsu basically recapping some of the older stuff

    • videoman190

At least It will have a story mode.

  • kaimo

Slow news day? We’ve known this for quite a while now.

Hyped for the console release regardless.

  • AkuLord3

Kinda wish they didn’t take the lazy route with intro cutscenes. Everyone popping in and doing the same intro thing everytime and not doing something different to character they know. That’s sadly disappearing in fighters these days and now Arcsys is leaving it…fantastic :L Oh well still excited for this.

    • Slayven19

How exactly is that lazy? You don’t know the situation so it could be that its too much work to program in right now or make that many animations. If arc systems were really leaving it blazeblue wouldn’t have just had it in the last game now would it? They’ll probably get to it in like the 3rd entry or something.

      • AkuLord3

Can’t say they couldn’t animate it when they show animations for attacks and such. Also you’re missing the point (or don’t get what i mean because i said “LAZY”), i know that Blazblue has it no duh but that’s especially why its WEIRD they don’t have it for this since they still get that’s something cool to have.
Any yeah they may do it later, they may not, doesn’t change that i’m still excited for this (though people seem to miss that FOR SOME REASON~).

    • Slade

I haven’t seen any deep gameplay footage because I’m reserving my awe for when I have the game in my hands, but I’m pretty sure there has to be some intro exceptions, like Sol VS Ky or Zatoichi VS Millia. I don’t think they would play it Tekken-style.

    • DriftSlave

You mean the thing people skip 99% of the time after the first week, right…you want a bunch of character specific intos that really dont mean anything. Save that stuff for story mode…where people have the time to see that stuff.

Xrd has character specific themes (Eddie vs Millia for example), Special win quotes and character specific dynamics like Ky’s ponytail getting untied in battle and a Remix of Holy Orders playing for the duration of the battle.

      • Fidelis

Not to mention all the character specific instant kill move animations

      • leingod

Guess I’m in that 1% … because I love dedicated intros and stuff. Just different dialogue would do, actually, if animating another intro is too much to ask.

        • colorblindnightmare

i’m more or less of the same opinion. The special intros Arc does really establish the charater relationships and pieces to the story. *Ky and Sol’s intro in accent core onward will always be my favorite* I have a feeling for the arcade release they just wanted their game to be balanced, functinal and of course drop dead gorgeous. I have faith they’ll add them

          • DoctorButler

Is that the sword fight intro? Yeah, that ruled.

      • AkuLord3

“…you want a bunch of character specific intos that really dont mean anything. Save that stuff for story mode…”
Sigh People like you really don’t understand and taking what i said REALLY far and not getting it at all. Especially being a hypocrite over (win quotes are also that thing those people “skip 99% of the time” but yeah you didn’t get what i was saying and took it WAY far to things i never said.

        • DriftSlave

First off, it’s far more expensive to animate for UR3 than it was for the engine they were using before. which is why they are currently not present, the time it would take to animate special intros would eat at the dev time to mach balance changes or even whole characters. No it’s not as simple as re-animating a current existing attack since now they are in 3D and the angles they are using have to make sense within the scene itself. ASW would not half-ass special intros which is why im sure they are not in the arcade version of the game at this time.

Second, I said win quotes because they are in the game…voiced even. Special Intro’s aren’t. You can call me a hypocrite *shrugs* Fact is that your getting bent out of shape because more than 1 person called you out on calling ASW lazy all because they didn’t add in special intros?

“Kinda wish they didn’t take the lazy route with intro cutscenes. Everyone popping in and doing the same intro thing everytime and not doing something different to character they know. That’s sadly disappearing in fighters these days and now Arcsys is leaving it…fantastic”

^Quoted from your post. I have no reason to put words in your mouth, you said it yourself that ASW was being lazy by apparently taking the lazy route with pre-fight intos. But whatever, your entitled to your opinion and i’ll respect that, I just disagree with you calling ASW and Daisuke Ishiwatari lazy because they haven’t put in special intros but made the effort to put in tons of new details in the game.

  • roockie112

I just wish they added Sin as a playable character

    • MrJechgo

His model is done, thanks to Sol’s rival cutscene vs. Ky. No seriously, Sin is fully rendered in 3D. He’s also in Sol’s intro and ending, which also uses in-game models.

      It’s only a matter of time ^_^

      • roockie112

Yeah I just hope they make him officaly playable.Since they went through all the trouble of making him in 3d. It would be a shame of only seeing him on the cutscenes.

        • MrJechgo

Considering that Xrd takes place AFTER Overture, it would be stupid to NOT have PCs from that game as well.

          • roockie112

Yup I totally agreed even if he was as pay dlc I would buy him aslong as he is in the game lol

    • mikanko

Certainly a sleeper pick to be the console exclusive character(s).

    • Volta

I bet an arm he will be the first DLC ASW is going to release for this game.

      • roockie112

Lol well I sure hope so

  • McBonJon

Here’s hoping that Jam makes it into the console version. Excited to play this when available.

    • MrJechgo

and Baiken, and Anji, and Bridget, and Dizzy, and Testament, and Zappa, and A.B.A., and Johnny…

      • Let’s hope it isn’t rushed out either.

      • k.b.a.

Tbh I quite like then fine in +R I mean my main venom is already in. I’ll miss Zappa if he doesn’t make it in but I can live without him. I’m interested In seeing what new characters they’ll created and implement from the already established lore. Why make something new if its going to be the same y’know. Every series should have that 3rd strike/ garou entry

        • Shane Guidaboni

Well, lucky you that your main is in the game and you’re satisfied. Some of us aren’t currently so lucky. If this were like a 3rd Strike entry than most of the cast wouldn’t exist, but they do. 3rd Strike had a completely new cast save for Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Akuma.

          • Mc-kun

My main isn’t in it either but I’m going to learn to adapt like the average person I guess.

      • Astrotrain

        Not in this first version.

    • CK Blaze

Jam pls. Haven’t even played a GG yet, but she stole my heart and got me interested immediately.

  • Linhua

T^T … i’ve been away from news on this game for quite some time so can someone PLEASE tell me that Jam and Dizzy have made an appearance already…

    • Volta

Nop, not yet… but they will surely do in the future… as DLC.

  • z_merquise

This is my most anticipated game in 2014.

I’m really amazed on the visuals. I’m personally biased on hand-drawn 2D especially in fighting games but I never expected to see something that would be so good as this in a 3D fighting game.

Or perhaps I just wasn’t impressed on the other “2.5D” fighting games’ visuals from Capcom even if I like their games such as Marvel vs Capcom 3.

    • Tyler Beale

Not much has changed graphically since SF4…

    • KnifeAndFork

      Jojo looks good too

  • Shane Guidaboni

I’ll die if they don’t add the rest of cast as DLC. I need Baiken!

    • I see like this 。゚+.ღ(ゝ◡ ⚈᷀᷁ღ)

I’d rather have most day one if not all since they’ve been there for about 13 years :/

      • All the classic characters need to be in here. No exceptions. But if Fanny comes back as DLC at a later date, I’d buy it Day 1!

  • Shippoyasha

Ramlethal being brown and blonde. Quite a striking look.

Love her shark teeth expression when she goes wild.

    • Oniros

Catering to the Ganguro crowd. ArcSys don’t discriminate.

    • xe7en

Have you seen her crouching neutral stance? I love her crouching neutral stance! ::grin::

  • Go2hell66

    Ramlethal <3

  • I’m getting this game for my girl Millia RAGE

  • Volta

Oh boy!! I’m really hyped for this game but, I’m afraid it will be suffering of a severe case of sequelitis and DLC… I want to buy it day one but they will be releasing a year later GGXrd#Reloaded, GGXrdSlash, GGXrdAcentCore, GGXrdAC+, GGXrdAC+R…. etc, etc… I’m sick of that… So I don’t know what to do…

    • Astrotrain

Learn a litter more about fighting games to understand that
updates and sequels are needed, (and no, they can’t update de game via patch forever). The problem is not that they release several “versions” of the game; the problem comes when companies do it incorrectly, like the UMVC3 fiasco.

    • DoctorButler

So? Buy it and support an endangered artform.

  • vileBrenman

This is so beautiful. I’m hoping we get more of these 3d games from arc system works

  • So can’t wait for this. Ram-chan <3 =^_^=

  • Kornelious

And the ladies shine over all else….In my eyes at least :P

  • Sperium3000

This game looks and sounds amazing. This art style looks even better in movement, it’s all full of energy.

  • Shady Shariest

Hmhmhmhm~ One of the rare games i can say will be on the shopping list 2-3 years from now on, when i get PS4.

    • DoctorButler

Get it for PS3 and double dip.

      • Shady Shariest

Nah. I all ready have VITA and couple games in the horizon for it. + Pc games.

  • Safros9

Meh, I know plenty of people will disagree with me but I think Sol’s character model looks terrible. Something about it is just ugly and really off.
Everyone else looks pretty cool though.

    • Shady Shariest

I think he is tad bit too top-heavy. Broad shoulders and chunky arms kinda look ugly contrast to overall physique.

      • colorblindnightmare

Sol has always been the epitomy of buff. It’s jarrig from the angle they show him at because it makes his shoulders look broader thay they are (with no muscle definition to boot) in animation he looks better especially during the cutscenes.

        • Shady Shariest

Oh… So they just show him in an “Awkward” transition stance? Like in the middle of a quick move?

          • colorblindnightmare

I guess you could phrase it that way. If you ever saw the little behinfld the scenes stuff Ishiwatari did on bururaji it shows sol is standing at a sideways angle. So ifbhe was rotated to his right say..45°? It would probably look better.

    • Masa

No i agree….he’s like a freaking tank, wtf have they done?

    • leingod

Yep, dunno when he got so buff. Ky looks pretty much his regular self, though. Except for the ponytail :P

    • Freakmasta

He went on the same diet as Terry Bogard. Look how buff he got.

  • $61526767

Soon.. cannot wait to play my first Guilty Gear game. I’m totally going to main Ky! Faust looks a bit confusing to play as. Although his play style is rather amusing.

  • persona_yuji

Can’t wait to show off my GURLFRIENDS! while riding my VULCANIC VIPER!
Perhaps I’ll also invite Ky so that we can eat some Coconuts.

  • Kai2591

No way, they’re actually in 3D!? Wow…they really look 2D.
    That’s just AMAZING imo. Beautiful.
I hope more games use this kind of graphics. Animes too even.

Perhaps Time & Eternity should’ve been like this huh.

    • KnifeAndFork

Yeah if they had half the talent and budget

  • KnifeAndFork

Still amazed they were able to pull off this incredible faux 2D Anime style flawlessly withe the now archaic and sloppy Unreal 3 engine when usually all other Japanese devs (and many Western devs) are all thumbs with it.

Truly astonishing. More games (and Anime) like this please

    • leingod

King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, Darkstalkers… heck, even “2.5D” games like Rival Schools or Toshinden would look awesome if they did something like this!

  • 永次

Looks awful, sprites 2D >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> anything in 3D.

    • KnifeAndFork

Lol “awful”? Are you insane? This game looks siiiiick.
Fooled many people thinking it was 2D anyway.
      Go back to the 90’s

      • 永次

        That people is blind.

      • leingod

Agreed, it looks great. It’s a good thing the series’ visuals evolved in such a nice manner… wish KOF had done something like this.

      • DoctorButler

        Go back to the 90’s?

How is that even an insult in your mind?

        • 永次

I hope the videogames return to 90s when the videogames were videogames and not hollywood movies and fast food.

    • Astrotrain

The game does not look awful, but yes, I prefer 2D over 3D.

      • Guest

Well, looks awful compared to 2D sprites like Blazblue Chrono Phantasma.

  • fairysun

If that’s how her look before her super moves(or whatever it is called), feel free to “Destroyed” me.

  • Aristides

That 3D art technique 0-0 I must learn it, even in the smallest scale possible. It looks incredible how they get away making a 3D game look 2D.

    • monkey king

Still looks 100% 3D to me. You can achieve this look quite easily in many 3D packages, but inside a game engine you’d have to use/write a custom shader.

  • Juliano C

Hope they will make more new characters instead of taking back all the old characters just to please the fans that cant let go and are crying a river because their old main is not anymore in the game…

  • Kayriss Wins

    Ramlethal Valentine looks absolutely gorgeous!

  • Vash bane

cant wait to see where the story goes
