Let It Die’s Core Concept Explained In A Suda51 Doodle

By Spencer . June 12, 2014 . 3:40am

Siliconera met with Grasshopper Manufacture CEO Goichi Suda to talk about Let It Die, an upcoming PlayStation 4 game and the first title developed with GungHo Online Entertainment.

"The theme of Let it Die is survival action. We see the player kill enemies and on the flip side, you’re just trying to survive. When you think about the title, another way of looking at it is you’re trying to live. In the trailer there is a scene where a character grabs sand from the ground and throws it at the enemy. You can kind of see what players will do when they don’t have items or weapons in the beginning and they’re fighting to survive. The violence in this game is just a byproduct of trying to survive," explained Suda.

Let it Die will be a free to play game for PlayStation 4. While Suda didn’t reveal what kinds of items will be sold he said Let it Die will not be a pay to win game. What’s really interesting about Let It Die is what happens when you die. Basically, your character goes into the cloud… and you’re reincarnated into another player’s game as an enemy. Suda has a little doodle to explain how this works.

"When a player plays a regular game and die that data dies too. What happens in Let It Die, the player data goes into this cloud. They’re part of the game now. Enemies have different characteristics, different visuals, different ways of attacking because they were different people," Suda said to Siliconera. We’ll have more about Let It Die after E3.

Let it Die is in development for PlayStation 4 and slated for release in 2015. The game will be published by GungHo Online Entertainment America.

  • It’s great that Suda took the time to explain the concept of the game and what he wants the experience to be like, but I’m still very disappointed and uninterested. I’m gonna count my losses on this one and just “Let It Die”.

    • Ah…. you. I see what you did there!

*slyly winks & points your way as I nod, approvingly*

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

Let it die, let it die
    Can’t hold it back anymore
Let it die, let it die
    Turn away and walk shortless

    I don’t care
    What they’re going to say
    Let me throw the sands
The gore never bothered me anyway!

    • Keiji Johnson

Gooood!!! How The HECK did I know that someone else was gonna reference that god dang song with a title like this? This is like something to be expected nowadays!
      Sorry… I’ve gone a bit overboard there. -_-;

      • Altin

Well, it’s “hip” right now despite being overrated as hell. But your rage is sensible, at least I can relate to your rage.

        • Keiji Johnson

          Huh? You… You can? O__O

          • Altin

Is it that surprising to you? :O

          • Keiji Johnson

Not entirely. I was kinda expecting some backlash or something from those who really love that song.

          • Altin

Well, guess you got lucky. Maybe someone will backlash because there are such people, that I am quite sure of.

I swear I never meant to let it di- O.O What? I can’t be the only one who thought this. Three Days Grace, ah, the good old days.

Overall, loving the concept and honestly, can’t wait to try out this game :D

  • Egil

Im still mad about lily bergamo

    • DesmaX

Just don’t make the Mechonis attack Grasshooper, please

    • subsamuel01

Same here, I was genuinely excited for that game. A unique action game with nice visuals on the PS4 would have been amazing. Instead we get another multiplayer shooter.

    • taekk

Yeah, lost ALL interest in this game.

  • Göran Isacson

Ha ha, so the “Cloud” is actually integrated into the game as a heavenly cloud that regurgitates you back in? That’s kinda Suda, truth be told.

  • wahyudil

    hmmmm …. interesting concept

  • yahavcd

    Suda, Please…
    Don’t let Lily Bergamo die…

  • fairysun

What happens if you die and no one else plays the game anymore?
    Oh, Just Let it Die.

  • Brimfyre

I’ve never felt so betrayed by a game reveal in my life.

    • Jaeger Knighty

I was so excited when I saw “Suda51” in the stream.

      Then I just cried.

  • Herok♞

I will decide how I feel about this game on its own merits, which is probably the best way to handle it. It was the only thing that seemed interesting to me at the Sony Event so I am going to see how it turns out.

  • CasualGamer

The thing is if this game flops, Suda would further lose his credibility in the industry and If he is gone, then so is any hope of seeing lily bergamo being made. So if you like the game then buy it instead of boycotting it just to punish the dev.

    • Yan Zhao

So naive. Crap like this needs to flop to teach developers a lesson. Its not our job to sustain them, its their job to appeal to us. That’s the business world.

      • CasualGamer

The only result if this flops is that another Jp dev disappear from Western market and the mainstream audience will still buy their gritty multiplayer shooters. Just my prediction.

      • ishyg

But what if it isn’t crap? Isn’t it too early to judge the game?

    • darke

That makes no sense. If this game ‘succeeds’, it’ll prove that “western style Suda games sell, Japanese style don’t”, and they’ll continue to make western ones; thus ensuring that Lily Bergamo never gets made.

It took Square a decade of flops, continuing to fail to make good western-style games before they took the hint. But they’ve finally admitted that maybe, maybe, it would be a good idea if they focused on the Japanese-style games that people fell in love with in the first place if they want to sell games.

I’ll just schedule Gung Ho to come to the same realisation around 2024, if they’re still around. :?

      • Fallen_Persona

That’s not true. They seem to be really happy with Tomb Raider. I suppose you could say they’ve finally found a Western game to sell, and the new Tomb Raider games truly are good.

The problem is people get really vengeful with companies, putting them in boxes. Say one company releases a good Western third person shooter. That’s all fine and dandy, but a lot of times, if before that they made a good Eastern-Style RPG, and dropped that in favor of that Western Third-Person shooter, people will hate because they loved that Eastern-Style RPG and want said company to “Go back to it’s roots.”

However, if they made the third person shooter, it’ll just be “a good game.”

Likewise, this also happens in reverse.

  • Godmars

This sounds nothing remotely like fighting as a girl against Mexican wrestlers twice her size in an all out over the top brawl.

    • Who can fight with all the bandages that are wrapped around her, to boot. Don’t forget that! That was going to look AWESOME – be like Spider-Man if he could fight with, like, dozens of webs shooting out of him at the same time… potentially. Now we’ll never know :'(

  • Yan Zhao

I dont think most fans even care anymore after the Lily Bergamo news. I’m certainly one of them. Dont care what this game is about, I aint buying it.

  • Brandonmkii

Man, I can’t stand the negativity. I hate people who play video games, official as of today. See you guys.

    • Fidelis

      Yeah see you next week

  • Slickyslacker

So essentially, strip all of the personality from your game, and make it a mindless killing machine.

  • Ying

I like the idea of the game, but I’m still disappointed by what this could have been. I do wonder how much this is going to affect the number of people who would have gotten “Let it Die” because I don’t think a lot of the people who are going to download this game would have heard of Lily Burgamo

    • ishyg

      It’s been said that it’s an F2P.

      • Ying

Yeah I know. I guess I should have used “download” or “play” instead of buy, but it’s just force of habit and I thought I got my point across well enough. I’ll go an edit it though :)

        • ishyg

          Ah, point taken then.

  • Varnes

Don’t care Suda, i want Lily Bergamo back

  • Kornelious

The game sounds like it has an interesting concept….but I I on’t like how Lily Bergamo was sacrificed for THIS. Why couldn’t he just make them two seperate games >:(

    • revenent hell

I kind of think he was forced to scrap it in place of this because Grasshopper thought micro transactions would make more money that whatever game he was working on at the time would.

      • ishyg

I think you meant GungHo thought micro transactions would make more money. Because PazuDora.

        • revenent hell

See I did get conflicted on which one to say but ultimately I figured it was Grasshopper because that his main job you know?

          • ishyg

But Grasshopper is owned by GungHo now, am I correct?

  • firstarioch

    Where is Lily BERGAMO ?

  • carlospsp

Lily waifu bergamo is dead. What sell today are gritty brown realistic games. It is past the time when Suda51 could push his otaku games and expect them to sell… But nowadays he has to answer GungHo expectations……

And Killer is Dead was already a HUGE BOMBA to expect Bergamo to sell better.

  • Alberto Maytorena

Not gonna lie, this was a low blow for me, and it doesn’t help Suda doesn’t even talk about the story, the plot or the characters or anything like that.

    • revenent hell

Its a free to play game. I am sure those things will be minimal at best.
Story/Plot is probably going to be something people have already seen and played but more generic in its implementation.

NPC characters will probably be fairly bland and as far as the player character goes I kind of think it’ll be almost a blank slate… As in ” You are in a Zombie infested world keep yourself alive and make it to
Antarctica” or ” After World War Five chaos consumes the world, save yourself from the psychos” type thing. Mind you these are just examples. I doubt the player character will have an abundance of history.

  • carlospsp

Suda51 abandoned anime-fans officially with this game.

Deal with it. It will sell much more then Lily Bergamo would have

    • ronin4life

      It’s free to play.
      It won’t “Sell” anything.

      • revenent hell

Well…. I am sure it will sell some stuff when someone hits a pay wall of some kind.
They are always in free to play games. I just wonder what kind of way it will be implemented here.

    • AkuLord3

Anime fans to a thing that’s not an anime (oh right noone understands what that words means nvm~) and no we won’t deal with it, we’ll just not get it and that’s that. Nothing wrong with people being interested in a concept and character of a game and then have it FLUNG out the window for something dark and generic.
Will the game suck? maybe but i like the ideas in this game and more on it will make it more interesting, it is Suda but still sucks we couldn’t get both instead of just one.

  • Alberto Maytorena

Also, I’m bothered by the fact that all charas wander around killing people in their underpants.

  • TheBlackRabbit

i will enjoy dying in this game, :D

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

Nothing to see here…really nothing to see here.

This move is way worse than what Insomniac did with Overstrike…essentially killing it by turning it into Fuse.

  • I’ll try the game, out, but I’ve never been one for these types of games. Sure this game is free, but I still will probably find myself completely bored with it after a week (if even that).

  • Martian Wong

I got a question, if my character died…will I have to start all over from level 1 with a new character?

  • ishyg

What should I do with the Lily Bergamo stickers I got from GungHo’s TGS booth now?!
    Please let Lily Bergamo live.

  • Brandon

With all the backlash that this game is getting all I can say is this. You people had better put your money where your mouth is and not only buy Ranko Tsukigime, but make the game the most successful thing Suda has ever made. because if that game flops it will be yet another example of fanboys whining but not actually doing anything.

    • darke

I would, but Sony hasn’t released it on the PSN (EU, US, and JP!) so they apparently don’t want to sell the game to me.

    • Fallen_Persona

? Being based in anime doesn’t make it good, that endless runner thing. Longest day has nothing to do with LB.

That said, Let it Die still looks like shit, and has a concept utterly surpassed by Bloodborne.

  • Asura

This game came into development while they were trying to decide how Lily Bergamo would play.
I can’t believe so many people are devastated simply because a game is non-anime anymore.
There was no gameplay of LB, there was nothing but some concept art. You don’t know anything about that game – how are you so upset over it getting recreated?

For the amount of gamers that say “gameplay is most important” apparently there’s a good chunk that just wants visuals.

    • Rafael Budzinski

    • My personal opinion is that i was in love of lilly bergamo (considering that was the name of the female character)….. soooo that´s pretty much it hahahaha

    • Porcu Peth

best comment in the entire page

  • I like how some people are trying to act as, “The voice of reason” here. The high-and-mighty attitude of, “I can’t believe you guys are bent out of shape because a game you thought looked cool is no more” and “He doesn’t owe you anything – he can do what he wants!”. At no point are these “defenders” actually saying that they think the new game looks cool or fun, or that they’re interested in it – you know, the IMPORTANT THING.

Suda had a game that looked interesting and cool and had nothing but potential. He turned it into something that, while the potential may still be there, is now ugly & gross and… well, who the eff likes it now? Just Suda? I hope he can buy millions of microtransaction items to justify the cost of development then, because I’ve yet to see evidence of a potential new playerbase that’s actually interested in supporting this game now.

The reaction to Lily Bergamo last year was “Super Positive”. The reaction to Let It Die now ranges from “Super Negative” to “Extreme Apathy… but a great excuse to put down other gamers!” from the Elitist crowd putting down the fans of LB. That’s not an upgrade. Everyone who complains (the group I’m with) is 100% justified. The IDEA, POTENTIAL and STYLE for Lily Bergamo was much cooler than the REALITY for this.

Oh boy. With SWERY going XBone exclusive for his next game, and Suda swinging-and-missing here, what creative,”boutique” Japanese designer will bring the good kind of weird to the PS4 now? Maybe Taro Yoko (of Drakengard & Nier) can become the next notable Japanese director for brilliantly strange stuff… I mean, he does interviews via a sock puppet for crissake’s. WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR THE INTERNET TO PAY ATTENTION TO HIM!?! :D

  • F2P? Lame. Knew I should have been more worried about GungHo buying Grasshopper.
