Arcade Shoot-Em-Up Tengai Reappears For Smartphones

By Eugene . June 14, 2014 . 2:00pm

Tengai is a classic side-scrolling shoot’em’up from back in the mid ’90s. It’s now been re-released, gloriously old-school and all, free on smartphones.

It was known for being tough (for its time) and different in its choice of using characters rather than ships.

Tengai, also called Sengoku Blade: Sengoku Ace Episode II also made waves for giving players heroes with more than a basic backstory, each having their own endings. The game features characters battling their way through a fantasy version of Japan. It appears all six characters from the original game are playable here as well.

Tengai is out now on iOS and Android.

Oooh, looks fun. I’ll have to download it when i get that Samsung Galaxy 3 from my mom.

    Nice. I miss Jun Tsukasa’s art…

I still have this on the Saturn, was hoping it would be on XBLA or PSN someday.. well at least free for Android..

Oh, weren’t these the guys who also made that game where you play as, for instance, a small witch girl with a rabbit familiar, a bald vampire, a genie and a manly samurai who gets ALL the dudes? Psikyo, if I recall correctly. Apparently only one character is free though, judging from the comments on the page, which I think I see the logic behind. Half the fun of this game IS the various, wacky characters.

Yep that’s the same team, Both games in the series was on PS2 though when sold in Europe by 505 games was split into two separate games.

I thought so- recognized the character designs. Man, Gunbird 2 is pretty darn wild. Wonder if there’s any fun in hunting down 1 if I already own 2 though.

Though they were both sold a super budget price in Europe as well. 505 Game Street were great for 2D shooters. Then it’s all went pear shaped when they started doing cheap American games. :(

It looks like they’ve covered up poor Koyori, or just “Miko” in the international release, for this re-release. Bah.

Ha ha, I THOUGHT something about it was peculiar. Kinda curious whether or not she’ll be the most popular character now ;)

    • Aoshi00

yeah, all covered up now :( tried it, only 2 chars unavailable, need to pay to unlock the rest or continue.. hard to play on the phone anyway.. would be better if ported to console w/ achievement like Guwange, poor Koyori indeed :(

Why would they do that! The game was famous for its sexy main character. It’s like making a Dead or Alive game without bikinis.

haha going to play it from my experia play, hopefully other great psikyo stg coming up as well

  • landlock

Don’t think these games work very well with touch controls at all IMO. Think I’ll stick with the PS2 versions.

Reminds me of Pocky & Rocky. Man that was a fun game
