Hyper Light Drifter’s E3 Trailer Is Starkly Beautiful

By Eugene . June 14, 2014 . 9:30am

Hyper Light Drifter, the Kickstarter darling coming to practically everything, noted that it was also heading to XBox One earlier this year. Above is the game’s E3 trailer.

The trailer shows more of how the game’s coming along with its pixel-art graphics. Some combat is included, as well as quick glimpses of some of the puzzles you’ll have to solve to advance. Oh, and really, really, really big robots.

Hyper Light Drifter is coming to PC, Ouya, Mac, Linux, XBox One, Wii U, PlayStation 4 and Vita.

    Looks realy good

  • revenent hell

They always said beauty is in the eye of the beholder…
I don’t think its “beautiful” so much as colorful. It looks ok looking on all accounts to me but it doesn’t yell at me as something I just “have got to” play.
It kind of seems like a game I would play is my friend had it and they had nothing else on hand interesting I wanted to play.

I did think the music was rather nice and calming sounding though

    • Shane Guidaboni

I think they game looks gorgeous and the sprite/pixel work is stunning. Not to mention the wonderfully done animations.

      • revenent hell

I would assume most looking at this article think that.
I on the other hand do not. As I said aside from it being colorful and having nice music I think everything just appears “ok”.

        • Shane Guidaboni

Okey dokey. Not trying to convince you otherwise.

          • revenent hell

Sadly it would be wasted effort.
Its not to say I don’t enjoy games like this but frankly I can already play them, they just aren’t as colorful. To buy this would require them to have something that makes me “instantly want to play it” and it really doesn’t.

    • Göran Isacson

Nah, I think I get where you’re coming from. This game has a deliberately grainy and “square-y” look, it kind of looks like an older NES/C64 game in still screen shots. It prioritizes very smooth animations and a varied color palette, as you say, and if that’s what you dig this game is like divine massage on your eyeballs. If not, all those jagged edges are probably gonna bother you.

      • revenent hell

See, normally this is a style I like and would be down to buy but for this game I just don’t see its “great and buy me ” points.

It kind of reminds me of Journey with its art aesthetic, which is good, but what’s known isn’t much and what is isn’t very tempting for me to want to play.

I was kind of hoping for more in the trailer

        • Göran Isacson

Ah, that much is true- they’ve mostly kept gameplay details and such to the backers of the project. All I can tell you there is that it’s kind of like “Megaman Zero” from an overhead perspective, with “Gauntlet-style” enemy hordes, and projectiles you can cut down in mid-air with your laser-sword. I’ve liked what I’ve seen, but they do sort of focus more on atmosphere and graphics in the trailer.

          • revenent hell

Most trailers do, do that, though. I was kind of hoping to see some more gameplay bits involved here since it does sound rather fun. I would just like to see a bit more of those elements in action before I say I would buy it.

  • Ardus

Whenever i see this game it makes me think of a futuristic Secret of Mana or Zelda game, hopefully its as long as either of those two games.

Wouldnt mind a release date on this thing.

  • Mugiwara

Another game that in the same universe of Dangan Ronpa?! Just joking.
Between, this game looks great! :D

  • Prinnydoom

Damn, Waiting for this is truly painful when you consider how beautiful it is. I watched this trailer a while back not expecting much and wow was I blown away. The music, the 8 bit style, the concept for the story, the gameplay. As indie games go this has got to be one of the best so far.

Also I can’t help but think of EVA Unit 02 when I see the scene before the end. http://cdn1.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/30451431/hyper-light-drifter-retro-is-back.0_cinema_1280.0.jpg

    • X_Bacon

And one of the enemies looks like Sachiel. I think they really like Evangelion.

      • yep !!
        very evangelion inspired

hope the game is really good , not boring beautiful

    • Mar Mar

Evangelion! Now I see why this scene looks way too familiar.

    • chroma816

Everytime I see this, I too think of NGE. They’re really reminiscent of Unit-02 and 13 (from Rebuild:Q).

I can’t help but feel there was a little bit of inspiration coming from that direction, which isn’t a bad thing at all.

      • Prinnydoom

Yeah I looked back over some images and so someone compare sachiel and the boss in this trailer. They’re very similar. Man that just makes it better.

        • chroma816

That Sachiel looking enemy was definitely inspired by NGE.

          >Man that just makes it better
I completely agree. I loved this from the first thing I saw about the game, but now I like it even more.

    • John Diamond

      it’s not really 8bit tbh

    • solilocus

I think it is more inspired from the God Warriors of Nausicaa. All this post-apocalyptic setting with ancient lab full of bio-engineered creatures is reminiscent of the work of Hayao Miyasaki.

It’s normal for you to see similarities with the Units from Evangelion since they are inspired by the God Warrior of Nausicaa. One of the first work of Hideaki Anno, the creator of Evangelion, was to animate the God Warrior scene in the Nausicaa movie.

  • SerChief

I can’t wait to have this on my Vita! I’ve committed to buy this on release date. Its so creative and that music is awesome. As far as graphics; I didn’t know you could do so much with so little.

  • X_Bacon

It’s the same trailer that’s been around for some time. I was hoping for something new. :(

    …still looks great though.

  • chroma816

Looks beautiful. Can’t wait to enjoy it – now I just gotta figure out if I get it on my PC, or my Vita.

  • Vash bane

“coming to practically everything” I don’t see it list as three other systems :(

lol whats a ouya….nvm googled it. never heard of this looks interesting and liking the music

  • Arz

Isn’t this the same trailer for the Kickstarter?

    • Aristides

If I’m not mistaken this is an extended version of the first trailer, there are some bits in there with some combat that weren’t in the original. That being said it’s mostly the same.

  • Mimi

so no ps3 i see. I feel so left out :-( guess ill have to get it on pc then. (sigh)
but really it seems the the west has completely abandoned the ps3. At least I can look forward to new titles from Japan

    • 9breaker

Huh you’re right, that’s odd. I think this game would look nice on the vita at least.

  • Göran Isacson

Oh so eager to get my grubby hands on this. Gonna be getting my desolate, hostile dungeon crawling on so hard after this.

Also, saw quite a neat trailer in the “related videos” section, Ori and The Blind Forest. Haven’t seen any coverage of it here though, might be worth taking a look?

    • neocatzon

This one reminds me to Child of Light too much, not that I complain more games like that. Also interested in coverage of this game.

  • AdhesiveBoy

Small note: does anyone else watch VaatiVidya and was immediately reminded of it by that last bonfire graphic?
