Square Enix recently shared a bunch of info on their upcoming 3DS multiplayer action game, Final Fantasy Explorers, which will have about 20 jobs and recruitable monsters. They also updated the official website with screenshots and a Q&A section for fans who are new to the game and series.

Q: What kind of game is Final Fantasy Explorers?

A: It’s the latest in the Final Fantasy series. It’s a new series that will have plenty of action characteristics while focusing on the party play that requires strategizing to take on Summons.

Q: Please tell us more about partying!

A: Parties feature four members. They can consist of four friends playing together or even have one friend and two monsters, and other possibilities depending on the situation. Of course, you can also play on Wi-Fi to party up with friends who live far away.

Q: Once you select a job, can you change it afterwards?

A: You can switch out jobs prior to taking on a quest. Jobs are a crucial factor when it comes to playing with a party. Whether you want to be a healer or go on the offense, you can pick whichever job that would be most suitable.

Q: Do you need a lot of people to play?

A: You can also play with just one person. While we still haven’t shown it yet, the game’s system will have you party with monsters when playing solo.

Q: What exactly are these “jobs” from the Final Fantasy series?

A: They are basically classes. The Knights, who have high defense, are the shield that protects the party. The martial artist Monks have high offense to take out enemies. For heals, there are White Mages, and all kinds of other jobs with their own abilities that have appeared throughout the series.

Q: How many jobs are there?

A: There are dozens of jobs, so please look forward to future announcements!

The above images are titled “Hometown,” so it looks like the starting area. It was mentioned in our earlier report that the game is set on an island with different areas, where you’ll be free to walk across the entire place.

However, as far as questing goes, we still don’t know whether Final Fantasy Explorers will be like other hunting-style games or if Famitsu’s comparison to Final Fantasy XIV actually holds any merit.

Final Fantasy Explorers is in development for Nintendo 3DS.

  • Sounds like a mix of FF/MH Phantasy Star 0 MP/online… if so, I’m very interested and I’m definitely looking forward to more information.

Y’know this kinda seems like it has a Fantasy Life vibe to it, no?

  • It doesn’t look *quite* as pretty as I would have hoped, but given how large it seems to be (even outside the world), I am not displeased in the least~.

    • Namuro

Yeah, I was slightly disappointed with the graphics. But, this is still very early in the development! I’m sure that the final game will look amazing.

Even if their games are not always the best, Square Enix at least always deliver great looking games! I have confidence in them! So let’s wait and see.

      • KanjiLikesBoys

do we actually know how long it’s been in development?

        • Namuro

Nope! Absolutely no idea! I’m just guessin’, and hope that they’ll brush up on the graphics later on.

Even if they didn’t, and the final game looks like this, I wouldn’t mind, though. :D

          • KanjiLikesBoys

I just want it to have been in dev longer so there’s a better chance ofi it coming out this year (even if it only comes out in Japan)

      • I agree~! I remember some of my favorite stuff they’ve done that looks splendid for its time and hardware are on older consoles now (Wii, PS1), so I have faith in them now. ^u^

  • James Enk

i get the impression there is a bit of Crystal Chronicles in this

  • Ardus

Is this Monster Hunter Final Fantasy or Phantasy Star Online Final Fantasy?
Either of those is good though.

  • Virevolte

So, is it awesome, or is it AWESOME ?

    • Namuro

      It’s going to be AwEsOmE!

    • Aha Disco Elf

Seeing your avatar… man, having a full Tonberry team is going to be creepily awesome.

      • Prinnydoom

Dammit. I just said above that I found having monster party members annoying. (^Above) But having a host of tonberry’s at your side would be pretty Don. There, I am a hypocrite….are you happy internet?

        • Wait what

        • Aha Disco Elf

I’m probably going for a full support White Mage casting Shellga, Protectga, Hastega, and Reflectga while they repeatedly DOINK-ing Bahamut for 9999 damage a stab. It’ll be a glorious slaughterfest.

Q: What exactly are these “jobs” from the Final Fantasy series?

A: They are basically classes. […]

I don’t think this was the answer people wanted.

    • Land of Green Pasture

they should have said ‘play style’

  • Guest

Is there no single player? Can we play with random people without friending? If not, I think I’ll pass on this. None of my friends care about 3DS or FF.

    • Yes, it does say there is single player.

  • Go2hell66

Just hope they balance the jobs properly. Especially since its online

    • Virevolte

Yeah. I wouldn’t like another Ragnarok Odyssey.

  • Prinnydoom

Ugghh another FF game that uses monsters as party members. Not going to put me off getting it as it looks promising. Still, monsters as part members is annoying.

    • Go2hell66

agreed. if they’re anything like the cats in monster hunter they’ll just be taking up space. i’d rather they just implement decent online play

      • J_Joestar

well i’m sure they are optional and meant mainly for soloing purposes anyways.

        • KanjiLikesBoys

because the compulsive nature of “cathcing them all” and “finding the cute ones” appeals to [some] female and gay consumers and people who have been playing pokemon from the beginning and love catching powerful monsters to use to attack other monsters. I think they’re just throwing in all the popular things to sell as much as they can

          • Jero

Finding the cute ones, count me there.

    • revenent hell

I like monsters as party members. Its like a throwback to the tactics games. Although they seemed to be of more use back in those games than they tend to be in the “newer” ones.
I don’t see why they just don’t let you create a party instead of having to use monsters for a single person play through. It never makes sense to me why they implement “alternatives” to creating a party made of peoples.

      • Prinnydoom

Having an AI character party would be a lot more appealing.

        • Skeptika Crediblus

I agree. Why not have recruitable characters instead of making it “Final Fantasy Monster Hunter”?

        • revenent hell

The option to do so or not is what makes using monsters great to me. Being forced to use them on the other hand is not great nor fun.

Like I said back in the day certain monsters in your party early on where fairly godly but in todays gaming age most games that do use “monsters” as party members… They fall flat. They tend to be weaker and with more limited ”skill tree’s ” than what an AI party member would have and I find them all around less useful.

They should just let the monsters be an option for use (considering in my experience how “weak” they tend to be in comparison to the AI human counterpart) and leave it at that. Everyone wins.

    • sakanaとkoeda

I 100% agree. You give me the choice to choose any job I want to be (great), but for single-player runs, I have to work alongside the likes of Old Yeller and Smeagol instead of something like an offline EO guild? This company needs more creative competition from the industry.

  • Monsters as party members eh? There better be dragons so I have an excuse to be a chick and scream “WHERE ARE MY DRAGONS!” When I go with no equipment.

    • You wanna go all Stormborn on them dontcha?

      • Yesh! Either way boy or girl I’d still go around in the game nude saying that

    • Guest

Hoping that I can party with a pack of Tonberrys.

Because really, that’s all you really need.

    • Takane Shijou

Really hoping I can party with a group of Tonberrys with me.

Because really, that’s all you need.

      • Yeah but…. I would be dubed THE MOTHER OF DRAGONS!

  • Namuro

Interesting! I like the Monster recruitment idea. Now, I can make a really creepy party of Tonberry and Cactuar!

…I sure hope they’ll be in the game…

    • Virevolte

      Okay. Let’s party !

  • Skeledon

I’m not sure if I missed it from previous posts, but did they announce if this game is going to be a traditional turn-based RPG or an ARPG?

    • lackofstyle

an ARPG, but more like a “hunter-game” iirc

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

dozens of jobs? monster as party members? I think this might be awesome…I only wish to play as other races

  • J_Joestar

Wonder how the Job switching will work with leveling and stat gain, will stats adjust simply based on your current level and job? or will it be something where your stats are consistent between all jobs but different jobs raise your stats differently per level up?
The former would be nice for easy accessibility and no fear of screwing yourself over while the latter would be good for min-max style players.

I’m anxious as all Hell for gameplay footage of this game. @[email protected]

  • Yan Zhao

I’m glad SquareEnix is learning from their mistakes and their admition of that mistake, as well as Bravely Default’s success. This is the type of Final Fantasy game we want.

  • Takane Shijou

This sounds pretty neat to me so far, can’t wait to hear more from it.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Dozens, eh? 24 might be the official number.

On that last point about battle system, they need to spill the beans. So far it points to MH style, but they need to be clearer.

  • raygunner659

Other than the comment on that last article about how the game will play more like a light version of FFXI and FFXIV, I still have no idea how this game is gonna play. But if it has an FF job system it’ll probably be interesting enough. Oh well. Wait for trailers I guess.

  • The game reminds me of this from way back in 2010

    • Oh, hey! That’s an interesting thought. I wonder if h.a.n.d. are working on this, since Chocobo Racing got cancelled.

      • Obviously the games aren’t the same, but they seem similar when it comes to visuals.

  • TerrenceEncore Jones

Great! A solo team with monsters! My wallet is ready!

  • i hope its more than just summons you can take down. It would be nice other Final fantasy monsters and stuff too

  • Vash bane

solo sounds awesome to me. I have no friends that live far away anyway >.>

    • awat

i will be your friend , i will give you my 3ds code later on when i get home give yours back i will add you c: and maybe some other folks here can share their codes with you too

  • Ric Vazquez
