Xblaze Code: Embyro is a visual novel set within the BlazBlue universe, but you won’t see Ragna in this story. The main character is Touya Kagari, an average high school student who has a part time job at a curry restaurant. Touya stumbles into the Restricted Ward and finds himself over his head until Es, a Sleipnir from the Mitsurugi Agency, rescues him.
"If I ever saw a guy like [the protagonist in Xblaze] I would be annoyed by him, but he’s a character you need in the story," creator Toshimichi Mori laughed when talking to Siliconera. "The point in Xblaze is to focus on the female characters, that’s why I didn’t want to focus on the protagonist."
While Es is combat trained, she doesn’t know much about the world. Players will also meet Hinata, a cheerful girl and the younger sister of the Himezuru family, and Mei from the Amanohokosaka clan who works with the Mitsurugi Agency.
"The only popular adventure game I’ve played where the hero stands out is Okabe from Steins;Gate. In adventure games, you either make the hero stand out or the heroine is going to stand out. For Touya Kagari, because he doesn’t know a lot if he does too much in the game, nobody will reveal anything to him so that kind of protagonist wouldn’t work with the gameplay," Mori continued.
Xblaze Code: Embryo connects to the BlazBlue series, but we won’t see how the story connects right now. "What I hope, is if there is another BlazBlue game, that’s when you will truly see what I envisioned. By the end of the BlazBlue series, the connections between the games will be clear," Mori explained as he was careful not to answer any questions about the future of BlazBlue.
Xblaze Code: Embyro comes out in North America today on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.
