It’s been almost two years since Square Enix released The World Ends With You: Solo Remix, an updated version of the hit 2007 DS game for iOS devices, featuring enhanced graphics, modified battle system, and more. Well, the game is now available for Android, and in English, too!

In addition to a new character named Coco who sells in-app purchases, the updated version of the game has other perks and adjustments, such as more easily triggered Psychs, full HD art and animation that has been redrawn for higher pixel density, and tradable Friend Cards.

After pouring 100 + hrs in the DS game. Will I get the Android version?! Of course! Boring lunch break here I come!

  • Thor Mjolnirs

IAPs = No buy. Make your profit off the product alone and stop nickel-and-diming.

    • As someone who’s played the iOS version: The IAPs are easily ignored. They’re just there for the sake of it, that’s all.

The entire game is the full experience of the DS version, just readjusted to one screen mechanics.

      • Thor Mjolnirs

“They’re just there for the sake of it”

No. That’s just a flimsy excuse. Having it there means the ability to give them your money after the fact is bad.

        • God

I don’t mind you having your opinion and all, but try not to judge others’s.

    • James Reilly

Uh the IAP stuff is not some wall that prevents you from playing the game at all like a FTP game. It’s literally just extra remix songs or materials/game money and the latter can be obtained via grinding.

It’s nothing more then for people who don’t want to grind materials or just want the extra songs. Played the IOS version since the release and haven’t talked to coco at all besides buying the extra songs. Unless you are one of those people that see things as black and white and hate stuff like IAP/DLC/etc by default because of a silly thing like a misguided principle I see no issue with how this game handled IAP stuff. I can play the game normally without paying a dime more after purchase.

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

18$ is quite a lot at t his point in time. I hope it gets added to amzn store so then I can use some cred for it.

  • Paul Rodriguez

All I want is a new game.

    • God

I won’t allow for peace to exist in a world where there is only 1 TWEWY.

      • Daniel

Thats the god i know and worship (psss god is that you for realsies? Bring down some calamity on my neighbors if it is…the ones i dont like NoT the house with hot daughters theres also kids in there youd have to be a sick god to do that)

        • Firekitty

If you think God would hesitate to hurt kids, you and I are reading different bibles, buddy…

          • God

I only hurt people for trolling purposes.

          • Daniel

Read the bible messed up things happen Job was a bet between God and the Devil…still it shouldnt become a habit youre better than this God

        • God

You know that you are talking to the troll of trolls, right? Sigh… i’m feeling kind, so i’ll let you go with a warning, but next time i’ll turn all the hot into transexuals, make the neighbours you dislike own your house due to debts to huge to repay in this lifetime, and make the kids your responsability.

          • Daniel

I’ll just stop worshipping you then and build a golden statue of the hot daughters and claim them as my deity like to see your wrath reach me then (if im correct on this whatever you dont believe cant hurt you sorta like when i close my eyes i cant feel pain) is that what you really want tho God cuz ill do it, this place by my house buys gold so all id need to do is buy it off them n bam building materials

          • God

Err, no, i can still hurt you. But if you do, believe me, it will end in the most ironicaly painful way possible, ask Lucifer if you don’t believe me.

    • Micrll

I’m would love to see a sequel on the Wii U, seems like the perfect platform with the gamepad. Would easily sell me a Wii U, or any other console it comes out on for that matter.

    • Kroz

      bout time

  • EQeE

Fuck yeah, no more crappy DS emulator controls

    • Γεώργιος Αρχαιοκαπηλίδης

Why people use DS emulators in the first place instead of buying an actual DS? It’s so freaking cheap.

  • $1392518

Goddamn. Nearly given up on this.

  • Rabbit

    $18 and in-app purchases? Nah, I’m good.

    • BleuVII

My thought exactly. As I read I said, “Hmm… I’ll bite. …. WHOAH! $18?!” No repurchase for me. I’ll just go enjoy the DS version some more.

      • yomachaser

Which was what 35 bucks when it came out?

        • BleuVII

Key word: REpurchase. $18 is not bad for this game for a first-time purchase, but it’s hard to justify when I’ve already played the game so many times.

    • darke

I was fine with the $18 and the in-app purchases since apparently they haven’t altered the gameplay to force you to use them. For me the ‘no’ is the in-game NPC who sells in-app purchases.

Put a button in the menu if you must, but to not screw with my game world just to hassle me to buy shit.

      • Rabbit

Reminds me of Dragon Age. “Help, my family is in danger and I need you to save our reputation! Now if you’d please unlock this premium content we can be on our way….”

        • darke

Right. That’s the first thing that came in mind. Especially for a completionist, having a quest dude with flashy quest marker that you can’t complete without paying cash… really annoying.

        • Xerain

On the other hand, the guy in the Bar trying to sell you Loom in the original version of Monkey Island was pretty funny. I think How something is implemented matters. In the instance of The Loom guy, there seemed to be a bit of self deprecating humor with how badly he was trying to sell you on it.

      • yomachaser

What? No it’s way better if some npc in one spot has the iap menu and not a permanent button on the hud. Are you crazy?

    • CirnoLakes

To me, it’s worth it, because I would be able to play it on any device with Android OS that it’s compatible with. I’m someone who supports emulation, even though it’s controversial.

But the reason to support emulation is to keep games around. Games like The World Ends with You were exclusive games on closed platforms. But when they put it on mobile, it made emulation unnecessary. As being on an open platform so it can be available to multiple generations is one of the reasons why emulation is around and one of the most important parts of PC gaming.

For me, I could just emulate it, or play it on a Nintendo DS. But as much as I support emulation and think it is very important and valuable. I think that emulation is only a stand in until all of the important games in gaming history until they can be on open hardware and software that will last forever.

Now that The World Ends with You is on an open platform, and isn’t only on dangerous temporary hardware like the Nintendo DS, I want to support that, even though I already own the game. So it’s worth it for me. It’s also a game that I think is worth $18, especially since I can use it on dozens of devices.

  • Shippoyasha

    Damn that is expensive.

  • James Reilly

Solo Remix was a nice updated version of the original I waited for the sale when the game was 50% off.

  • Anesia Hunter

it’s been 2 years already? but it feels like it was just the other day ago when SE got us super excited thinking it was TWEWY2, just to say they did a new version for a single screen…

    • God

And then made us extra excited with the “7 New Days” crap, they haven’t even mentioned anything about it in the last 2 years.

  • They should do a 3ds port

    • Anesia Hunter

that would require them to completely re-design the game again.

plus they need to move onto TWEWY2.

      • Ric Vazquez

Exactly, TWEWY 2 for 3ds, BAM!

  • Zerousen

    About god damned time.

  • nekolife

Because no mobile game is complete without built in money grubbing. t_t

  • Firekitty

I…I don’t know if I can get this. I put like 500 hours into the DS game, I don’t think I’m ready to do that again, unless there’s new story content to justify it.

  • Suzaku

Freakin’ finally. Now they just need to bring Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions over to it. It’s already available on Android in Japan and iOS in English.

I had almost forgotten about this stupid phone port, I was learning how to not hate Square-Enix thanks to Drakengard 3, then I have to remember the disgusting build up to this reveal. I was crushed and enraged, not sure I wanna forgive that kind of crap.

  • Maia Kasoya

So how about that New 7 Days, Square?

  • Jero

What I really liked about this game was the 2 screens mechanic. I want TWEWY 2 but I don’t have any hope.

  • MSJ

    TWEWY 2 when?

  • Daniel

The worst part for me is that even if it works fantastic they dont seem to realize that most people who game on cellphones want nothing to do with that price tag, theyd rather end up paying for a cheap “free” game. And a sequel would be awesome (loved this game. beat it on my original ds) but even then i doubt theyd release it on console (even tho i still hope)

    • WhyWai

they release more than a dozen of these games in smartphone. Meaning it’s actually very profitable,,,

      • GGear0323

SE releases so many mobile games, whether they be ports of console games or original titles, they are bound to be profitable to some degree. They are all over the map as well. A dozen variations of card battle games, endless runners, rhythm games, RPGs. they can be F2P, stacked with IAPs or have a premium pricing. They release games on Gree, iOS, Android and even other types of phones. The ports are generally make money on the fact that they are ports and most of their original games on mobile are not very good but still make money because … I honestly don’t know. They have almost covered every base you can imagine on the mobile platform and don’t look like they plan on stopping anytime soon. The current boom in smartphone gaming in Japan doesn’t hurt either.

    • CirnoLakes

I’ve bought lots of games on Google Play for that much.

I look at it just like buying games on the Nintendo eShop for the Nintendo 3DS. But even better since I can use it on any device that I log into my Google account that’s compatible with it, just like Steam. I look at it as being like Steam for ARM devices. Though that’s changing as Android is starting to support x86 and more and more Android software is.

While with Nintendo software, it’s locked in to one device. And if it breaks, you lose it, which is really bad. And with PlayStation, you can only use it on Sony PlayStation devices that are compatible, and only about 5 of them now, I think, it used to be only 3. You can use Steam on any x86 device that can run Windows or Ubuntu or SteamOS or even some other versions of Linux.

And with Android, it’s kind of like that. You can run it on just about an ARM device that you can run Android. So I look at it as kind of like an investment.

I like what Square Enix is doing with this because while I like Steam prices. I like that this is showing many people in the console and handheld market who are scared of the mobile market because they feel pressured to make games cheap or make free-to-play games with DLC and microtransactions that they don’t have to. And that people will buy games on mobile without it. That lots of people like me will pay traditional PC, console, and handheld prices for games on mobile.

The PC, console, and handheld markets aren’t as separated as a lot of people think they are, I think. And I think that people will open up more and more to paying console prices on mobile if they can get console quality games.

  • CirnoLakes

That’s good. Android is one of my favourite mobile operating systems.

Unfortunately, I don’t really have room for this on my tablet, even with my SD card. And I don’t want to switch out SD cards a lot. So I’d have to uninstall something or I’d buy it right now.

I am looking forward to getting an Android laptop or a desktop, though. So I’m sure I’ll buy and install this when I do that. There’s just so many games, I’m looking forward to being able to build an Android desktop and get parts from Newegg. And having a nice 2TB hard drive for all of my apps like this.
