The Next Yakuza Game Will Be On PlayStation 3 And PlayStation 4

By Sato . July 1, 2014 . 6:00am

This week, Sega revealed that they’re currently developing the next Yakuza game during an interview with supervisor Toshihiro Nagoshi and producer Masayoshi Yokoyama. They share a few more details in this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine. (Thanks, Game Jouhou)

While details on the game remain light, the magazine report reveals that the game is in development for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. According to the magazine interview, it won’t be a spin-off title like Yakuza: Dead Souls or one that takes place in another era like Yakuza: Restoration.

However, it still remains a secret as to whether this new Yakuza title will be part o f the main-numbered series.

They also mention that there will be a bustling district (similar to Kamurocho but not specified,) in some form and that they’re thinking about making it into a game that the male audience can fully enjoy.

At the moment, they have auditions going on to get voices for the city or town folk in the game.

And I’m guessing this one will never see the light of day in the West, either…

    • Unfortunately, it seems Dead Souls literally killed it in the West.

      • EtroAnime

That game should have never came over to the West. I need the Yakuza series in my life, played everyone except 5.

      • Rayhan PromisedGallery

the only good thing from Dead Souls is playable Majima

        • leingod

Indeed! Still bittersweet though, since you couldn’t actually use his martial arts.

      • otakumike

        And I platted that one too. I’m Yakuza’s b****. :(

      • AkuLord3

Idk why people think Dead Souls killed bring the series over here. Heck we weren’t going get 3 and 4 until others convinced them (can’t remember the name) then left after we got Dead Souls.
Besides remember this is from the company where most of the sales on Valkyria chronicles 1 continue to grow larger every year but NAH don’t wanna give ya VC3~ and OTHER things :L.

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

VC 1 is worst example u can take there.

That game only started to sell on bargain bin there despite its huge quality. Not to forget, it actually super bombed on its released.

Don’t forget VC 2 also died so badly on sales as it is released on PSP.

I suggest u know the main reason why that series died rather than throwing blames .

  • SageShinigami

Again? With Ishin I got it, but this one will be a 2015 game, right?

  • But will we ever see it in America?
Find out on the next episode of Dragonball Z!

    • Ash_Riot

Dragonball Z has happy endings to its arcs, the reality will not be a happy one.

      • Well I heard through the Grapevine that WE MIGHT ACTUALLY get it!!

  • Okay the PS4 part may help if Sony actually cares enough to convince Sega to help fund a localization.
However, we would need Yakuza 5 first, and still have some time left to catch up.

  • I will have to keep an eye out, I finished Yakuza 3 in Japanese so I think I can manage this if it didnt.

Still need to get 5 though =?

  • You know what i want? A new main character, Kiryu is a total badass (no doubt), but seeing him in almost EVERY RGG game as a lead character not fun anymore.

    • TrueDefault

I want Akiyama to lead! But his character is not as involved with Yakuza politic, even his act in Y5 seems unnecessary.

  • Alex Cattaneo

I loved all the yakuza games even dead souls!

Such a Shame they stoped the serie in the west.

  • Arz

If they ever localize Yakuza 5 they gonna have rename it like, Yakuza : The Revenging or something. I don’t think people gonna buy a game series that they barely heard and start at part 5.

    • greeeed

Yakuza 1,2, 3 and 4 already have english version

      • Arz

        Yeah but that’s years ago.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

All of those bombed so bad.T_T

  • Aristides

I wish Sega would get their act together and continue the localization of the series… hell just let Atlus do it…

    • Ash_Riot

So that Atlus USA can region lock it? No thanks.

  • Don’t know which is more amusing:
    Yet another Yakuza game already
Sega’s making *another* game for PS3
The line for games waiting to get localized just keeps getting longer
    This picture

    • I remember when people were asking for Yakuza sequels when the series started because they didn’t want another “Shenmue”.

But yeah this would likely be different development teams so some series can return if Sega only greenlight them.

      • What, who said they didn’t want more Shenmue? Next time I hear that, I might just come along with my forklift and move such talk into the furthest warehouse.

        • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

I honestly have never heard that argument either. Only that Yakuza sequels were the spiritual successor to Shenmue.

        • No I meant they didn’t want the series to end like Shenmue.

  • Brimfyre

Shame. Another uprezzed PS3 game for the PS4. This game could have a lot of potential if it was built exclusively for PS4.

    • TheSusanagi .

PS3 have more owner and its good that this game come to both PS3 and PS4 cant wait

    • subsamuel01

PS4 doesn’t have a huge user base in Japan, and most likely this is another Japan exclusive.

  • Weeb

Welp it won’t be Sonic & Yakuza or Yakuza: Football Manager, so we can kiss any chance of localization good bye.

    • otakumike

or project Yakuza. Shame cuz Kiryu can SING!

  • Paul Rodriguez

Out on PS3/4 and not in the west

  • TalesOfBS

So, i am guessing the Wii U port of port didn’t good enough?

  • Lloyd Christmas

Kiryu is looking a little pudgy in that screenshot. I’ve only played 3 and wasn’t he around 40-ish in that one?

    • AkuLord3

someone needs to catch up to 4 (might as well since its last main series we’re getting from SEGA…i hope not) but yeah he’s 40 in 3

  • leingod

Oh boy, this only reminded me how much I want to play Yakuza 5 and Isshin.

  • Yan Zhao

PS4 could use more games right now, this would probably sell well even in the West since there is a lack of decent game library for it, yet Sega isnt smart enough to take advantage of it.

  • Superior Spider-Man

I just love that pic of Uncle Kaz and Haruka. Don’t know why.

  • NANAandLIZZYfanatic

*sigh* This shouldn’t be depressing news, but the more games they make, the less likely we are to get the previous ones finally localized.

  • Lance Hairdo

I just preordered the white Destiny bundle. I have the normal black PS4 but I’m selling it now, before it loses any value, and I’m getting the white one instead. It looks SWEEET! Amazon still has some here if you’re interested:

  • TheCynicalReaper

It’s fine. I’m fine. I realized after my sadness that there won’t be more Yakuza games for the West just how bad it got from 3 and on. No, it’s not rectalpain speaking. Actually notice how with each installment the games got hyped up the Yakuza more and more, as if it’s an honorable organization.
    Meanwhile, in reality:

Yakuza 1 was a masterpiece and didn’t build up the Yakuza as honorable, only that there were poor souls who were honorable trapped in a horrible organization. Then 2 was more about the police becoming corrupt as well because of Yakuza ties, and how obligation dragged Kiryu back. Then we jump to 4 which flat out says the Yakuza are totes good guys and if you have a criminal plan you should “go all out”. It has Taiga’s confusing message of “I hated that I killed people and am haunted by it, but I don’t regret that I did it for my boss.”

Screw these games. I’ll go back to being depressed when they write a narrative where the mafia isn’t idolized again.

    • TheCynicalReaper

Though with that said the last samurai Yakuza Kenzan title looked great and since it didn’t look like it was doing the same nonsense I would really like that to come over.

      …But it won’t. Thanks Sega
