Higurashi When They Cry Getting New Translation And Sprites For Steam Release

By Ishaan . July 3, 2014 . 11:15pm

Higurashi When They Cry is being re-translated for a Steam release, and MangaGamer announced at an Anime Expo panel earlier tonight that the game will feature new sprites as well.

We’ll have more information on this version of the game in the future.

What’s next? Official Umineko with ps3 sprites + voice release?

    • NegativeZero

I actually kind of prefer the original spirtes. They/re terrible and lumpy and poorly drawn but they have a lot of charm. The redone ones for the PS3 with the anime style made it a bit generic IMO.

      • xe7en

I get where you’re coming from. I played the recent updated version so I’m a bit spoiled with the godly seiyuu cast. I agree that the original artwork has it’s charm since the writer ryukishii himself drawn the models to suit what he had in mind. Who could forget beato’s troll face?

        • NegativeZero

While the cast is amazing, I always felt they didn’t put them in the right roles. I guess the image I had in my head and what I ended up hearing didn’t mesh that well. I’d imagine that if I had heard voiced with that cast originally I’d never have had any issues.

    • It’s unlikely it’ll be the PS3 assets (I think the case is that with the console releases, they’d have to go to Alchemist as well), but I do wanna hope that this release is successful enough to justify the same treatment for Umineko.

  • I did know about the new translation, but the new sprites were a big surprise to me! I saw how they’ll be looking and they’re pretty nice.

    • Zero_Destiny

Goodbye ghetto old sprites, I will miss you.

But that art does look pretty good! That’s exciting to see now.

      • Yeah, this is actually fully original artwork too. I guess Higurashi was a well enough seller for Mangagamer to get someone to make unique sprites for it, since the PS2 assets are another story entirely. Hope Higurashi sells well enough on Steam to justify maybe giving Umineko the same treatment.

        • Zero_Destiny

Yeah, that’s definitely the most exciting part of it, that they’re producing new art. I love to see that dedication and added new touch in these situations.

          • We should evidently be making sure this does not go to waste. I’m definitely buying this release– the new translation was already pretty great, but new artwork too? Sold. (even though I already own the physical mangagamer releases, ahaha)

          • Zero_Destiny

Heck, they admittedly had me at Steam to begin with, but a new translation, and some new original artwork is just super exciting. And seeing they’re keeping the old art in circulation (but will provide the new translation for free too) is great. Everyone has an option there, if they really don’t like the idea of changing the art.

          • It is pretty great, yeah. While I imagine some people would’ve liked an in-game option to change sprites (but maybe it’ll still come, who knows.), this is a great treat to have, especially for people who tend to spend time doing the artwork replacement modding regardless.

          • Zero_Destiny

Yeah in-game would of been preferred (and hopefully they can get in there), but at least it sounds like the old art won’t be gone forever now. That is important for some people who want it as originally as possible. Though I’m pretty good on firing up this game with the new art myself. lol

      • M’iau M’iaut

Dude those weren’t ghetto. Those were rejects from the third grade artroom.

        • Zero_Destiny

Third grade is legit thug life, dawg.

    • Lumi

ohhh they are the ones doing ozmania. and a BL too? yayifications!

    • PlatinumMad

The old ones were kinda funny, thought. Gonna miss them.

      • At least it’s not impossible to still get the original games. I bought the disk versions from the MangaGamer booth at Anime Central last year!

Edit: In fact it’s confirmed they’ll still be selling the original artwork version on their site, and that it will be coming with the new translation regardless.

  • Lumi

heres hoping they add voice too? (has there been a voiced release before?)

    • I think the PS2 and maybe the DS releases were voiced, but I think going for voices might be a whole different ballpark.

Besides, the English dub for Higurashi, at least in my opinion… was not so good. And Japanese voices might cost more to get, especially since they were consoles-only in terms of the game. After all, they can’t get the artwork either from those, so…

      • Lumi

this is… NEW SPRITES? I thought they just got the license to use the console release sprites

        • These are entirely new unique sprites, yes. I linked to the blog article from mangagamer that shows off Rena and Mion’s new default sprites! They’re being done by Kurosaki from Caramelbox. Don’t know them before now myself, but looking up artwork from them, they’re pretty good for what you could get and are familiar with VNs, and reception about the choice seems to be that they’re one of the better artists from there.

  • Xerain

Comeon 5pb. Look at all this and understand that the world NEEDS Steins;Gate Steam Cards.

    • KoRLumen

All I want are PC ports of Robotics;Notes and Chaos;Child :C

      Pls 5pb pls.

      • Iluz

I want an official english version of C;H, it’s not fair that Takkun is getting left out

  • laurenhiya21

I really hope they give Umineko some sort of English release next. There seems to be a lot going on with visual novels getting English translations so… crossing my fingers! ><

    • Hey, support this release, and they just might! You never know.

Though technically, it did get “some sort of” English release already– you can buy the game digitally off of Mangagamer’s site, but you need to also download Witch Hunt’s patch as well. Same for Rose Gun Days and Higanbana (which are both also available for download in Japanese.)

      • Kurizu208

Plus Witch Hunt’s translation was made with the support of the creator so that is as good as an official release imo.

        • based ryukishi07

        • Pretty much! They’re also the ones who do the translation for Higanbana and are working on the Rose Gun Days translation, so pretty much. I’m about 80% certain that Witch Hunt is also doing the new Higurashi translation, and that’s why there hasn’t been updates on Rose Gun Days yet since they finished episode 2.

          • Kurizu208

Spider Lilly did Higanbana but yeah their Rose Gun Days was great as well. Not sure if they are involved with Manga Gamer for that project but I hope so then we could be assured of it’s quality this time.

      • laurenhiya21

Yep, I fully intend to buy this if I have the money. (even if I already have the Desura version haha)

        And I knew about the patch (not that you could buy it without going to Japanese site though), but I mostly want it to come out for Steam or Desura so more people might read it. I just feel bad for Umineko I guess, since it’s so good but few people have heard of it compared to Higurashi ><;

        • Umineko got a pretty short end of the stick, especially with the anime doing Not So Good after Higurashi was a runaway hit, so it… hasn’t gotten a Chiru sequel yet. It helped minimize how many people could really get into Umineko, which is such a shame. It was a great story.

  • Edgar Nieves

    hell yeah!!! New sprites

    • chibidw

      Now where’s the Yandere version?

    • Shippoyasha

Really nice. Though there’s just something charming with the old artstyle as well.

I kind of wish they allowed for on the fly changing of artstyles like the Monkey Island remasters did:

      • Chaos_Alfa

It seems the Steam version is going to get an option to switch between art styles.

Doddler, MangaGamer’s programmer: “For those curious, I plan on having the ability to switch between the original and updated sprites for the steam release of Higurashi.”

        • Shippoyasha

Awesome. Didn’t expect it to come true. It was just wishful thinking on my part.

    • Eilanzer

      it´s the ps3 version?!

      • It is not the PS3 version (or more accurately, it’s not the PS2 version.)

These are entirely unique sprites being made by Kurosaki of Caramelbox.

        • DyLaN

Just for comparison sake, could you link a pic of the PS2 sprites?

          • Edgar Nieves

Ps2 sprites and cg pictures. i hope we get some cg pictures.

          • DyLaN

I wonder will the new artist attempt try to outdo the “Higurashi face”.

    • Spicy

  • This is great news. I love the Higurashi series and bought the old visual novels from Manga Gamer, but I’m sad to admit the translation quality was quite awful. I hope they do a much better job for the Steam release.

Including better artwork will be a really big help for drawing in a bigger audience, so I’m glad they’re doing that as well. I personally didn’t mind the bad art of the original (I kind of felt they added to the horror oddly, perhaps in a way children’s drawings can be surreal at times) — but I’ll be glad to read through the novels again with the more familiar character designs of the manga and anime.

For those unfamiliar with Higurashi, it’s a series I’d call much more than just a horror story. It manages to be hilarious, heartrending, intense, and bittersweet from one story arc to the next. Trying to solve the overarching mystery is also a huge part of the franchise’s charm–but perhaps what I like most is the wonderful cast of characters. All the main characters are exceptionally well-developed (not all at once–but over time), and I found myself loving all the side characters as well. An excellent story all-around.

    • gangrelion

“Surreal children’s drawings”? Interesting. I never thought about it that way, but it makes sense. However, I see this may not work with many people (myself included) as that old art-style would only make it difficult to take scary situations seriously. Therefore, I agree that new art will improve the chances of this game reaching a bigger audience.

  • Warboss Aohd

i can hear the Sith Inquisitor from SWTOR going “Murder and Mayhem await!”

  • Pinkemon

Good to hear! I’ve been keeping my eyes on this ever since it first hit greenlight so I’m definitely looking forward to the finished product.

  • Matty

Am I the only one who really liked the original sprites? I thought they were kind of unique and had their own charm.

    • zzzSleeping

I loved the expressions in the original

    • kardonius

Me too, I didn’t like them initially but they grew on me pretty quickly. Fortunately they’ll still be available on the versions MG sells.

    • pimpalicious

I don’t like them. I saw the anime first and the original character designs just looked odd to me.

  • Makoto Yuki

Definitely will buy this, I still remembered the chill when watching the anime..

  • Monterossa

main menu like this reminds me of crappy RPG Maker game.

  • Armageddon

one of the most deceptive anime I have ever watched next to madoka

  • Bryce Ward

What is taking them so long?

    • Aunna Terrell

I’m sorry. But they’re not a very large company, so it’ll probably take a bit. They are working on 19 other titles as well as this. But they’re hoping to have a (or some chapters) out later this year.

    • Juan Andrés Valencia

Translating Higurashi next to Cartagra, Kara No Shoujo 2, Bokuten, Da Capo III, d2b Vs. Deadrops and… Obscene Medical Records Of A Married Nurse and Imouto Paradise. Also they are quite busy trolling us with an Euphoria announcement since last year.

Trust me, it’s probably quite a lot of work for a small team.

  • Jadfish

I’m all for more 7th Expansion releases to the west

  • Steam should really expand the library for Visual Novels/text-based adventure games. The market is really there since point-and-click games sell very well on the platform.

  • Junko Enoshima

I HATED the old sprites, so I’m excited. Let’s hope they’ll have noses.

  • carlospsp

    ps3 sprites for UMINEKO, PLEAAAASE

    • These will not be the PS2/PS3 sprites, sorry. This is entirely new artwork.

  • Zoozbuh

This is FANTASTIC news. A huge well done on MangaGamer’s part for going to this effort, and I deeply hope that this helps Higurashi reach out to a broader audience. There’s a brilliant, very underrated story there but a lot of people I know haven’t even heard of the series!
I would love it if this was the start of a new trend.

  • Chip

Between this and Corpse Party coming out this fall for PC, this is a very good time to be a Jhorror game fan.

  • IV-n

It would be great if they translated the new one (Higurashi no naku koro ni Hou),

I want to read the those new chapters so bad, except maybe for the “breakdown” chapters.

  • Dkmariolink

Are you serious? My favorite horror anime of all time is getting a remaster?!

  • Fintlook

I wonder if the sprites will be betters than the PS2 one, whatever I’ll be rereading my favorite story again!

  • spyke180

    I want it on Linux

  • DS23

In so long as they didn’t have to cut anything to get a steam release, I suppose.
