A Look At Life At The Inn In Forbidden Magna

By Sato . July 4, 2014 . 1:42am

In Forbidden Magna, it sounds like there will be plenty of managing to do, similar to Rune Factory. When you’re not spending time managing the inn, you’ll also need to manage Spirit Girls in combat and make sure they’re comfortable at the inn.

Before going into battle, you’re required to put together your party, consisting of characters you’ll want to take into combat. Here, you can check out various stats and skills for each character.

Missions have various objectives. In the above image, it shows the objective being “destroy all the generators!”

As previously reported, the Spirit Girls acquire powerful special attacks by deepening their bonds with the protagonist Lux. In order to do so, you’ll need to have all kinds of conversations with them during their off-time at the inn. If you see a heart symbol above their head, that means there’s a chance you can increase relationship parameters.

The above is a look at just one of the many skills that can be acquired by getting closer to the spirit girls.

In this video, Lux gives us a little tour of the inn, where you’ll spend a lot of your time when you’re not in battle. As you can see, some of the girls have heart symbols, meaning they might want to have a little chat.

Here’s a look at some of the areas of the inn:

Forbidden Magna is slated for release on October 2, 2014 for Nintendo 3DS. First-print copies of the game includes a special eye-mask and a set of five drama CDs.

  • Nope not importing this time, art looks nice but this doesn’t seem for me.

  • Ethan_Twain

Okay, here’s my struggle with games like this. I am not some high and mighty moralistic fellow who’s too pure to play a game that revolves around romancing anime girls. Katawa Shoujo is a favorite of mine. BUT:

It’s impossible to tell which of these games are any good or not!

On one hand, there is a definite critical bias against girl games. I’m not buying into the whole “victimized otaku not accepted by society” narrative mind, but Japanese social norms especially concerning scantily clad 2D girls are very different from those in the western world. Just like games about killing nuns would take a critical hit, so too do games about romancing underage looking girls (or even just ogling them).

But on the other hand, the audience that does like these games tends to like them regardless of quality. I feel like there’s an audience that wants to support their chosen brand of media and are never more than a misplaced word from leaping to the defense of whatever Otaku game is in question.

The whole “Otaku” angle muddies the waters a ton. It’s really hard to get past the anime girl thing to just figure out which games stand up on their own or not. So I end up skipping just about all of them. This game could be good, could be awful but… short of taking a $40 gamble (assuming it’s even localized) it’ll be really tough to tell.

    • Deekei

its by the same people who makes Rune Factory. If the extent of your research only goes as far as ‘oh it has anime girls, i dunno if it will be good’ then you just don’t care enough of these games.

      • Ethan_Twain

And some Rune Factory games were good, and some were not. There are VERY few developers I would give a free pass to based on past work. At this point it’s probably Naughty Dog, Retro Studios, and… team Ico if they ever get another game out.

If the extent of your research only goes so far as ‘oh, these are the games the team made in the past’ then I feel sorry for the number of duds you’ve bought over the years :P

        • Deekei

Having a background check on which designers worked on certain games im pretty sure is alot more credible then basing off a stereotype. And I personally enjoyed all the Rune Factory games I played. I know what I expect and unless they change alot of stuff which I’m pretty sure the press will cover, I don’t see any reason for the benefit of a doubt.

          • God

There are hundreds of people involved in making a game, that a few of them are involved in making another doesn’t exactly guarantee quality.

          • hng qtr

There are hundreds of people involved in making AAA games, for niche titles not so much. Atlus, for example, has different development teams for each of their series and about 120 employees.

          • God

Hundreds may have been an exaggeration, but i mean for example, X person worked in the original Disgaea, and X person worked again in Disgaea D2, but with an entirely new different team.

        • The later Rune Factory are pretty good, which matters when given a first impression for a new team.

    • klkAlexar

Just wait until it gets here and people review it then.

    • JohnNiles

It’s a problem of plentitude – we are now getting localized games at such a high rate that we have the luxury of turning them down and waiting for the next one. There’s a risk that the publisher will quit on a series if the sales numbers are bad, but that’s a shared responsibility – we are not mandated to support games we don’t like.

I listen to official and fan reviews, but I always weigh my tastes against theirs. In general, I prefer people with exacting tastes to superfans. I’ve also started watching gameplay footage when I feel I don’t have enough information – it’s quick and effective.

If a game is shaky enough that it’s a coin toss, then I don’t bother flipping the coin. I can miss a game or two if I don’t think it’ll rock my world.

By the way, the serial coverage has been rather helpful – I tend to forget games if they’re only mentioned at release date.

    • Aristides

Considering Neverland closed down I’m guessing they’re going for a more fan-service approach to make sure they score enough sales in Japan to be successful. I believe this game will be on the same level as recent Rune Factory games in terms of quality and gameplay, they’re probably just tying to rope in some of the hardcore market in Japan.

      • Seriously i dont understand, show me the fanservice ppl keep bitching about in this game. I had it since the game dont even have them or making it as the main focus but ppl seems to keep ********* about it

        • Aristides

That’s just how some people see it since the game appears to have some harem elements. Personally I don’t really care, it won’t make me like the game any less.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Actually Ethan, while “Otaku” angle does muddies some of the waters as not everyone is into those kind of things, sometimes it is only through that audience that they are able to create some new kind of experience here.

After all, u did say here that Otaku audience like their type of games regardless of quality but remember, when Rune Factory series first come out, many point their fingers that the game is otaku kind of game there. But see what happen?

RF 1 is a nice title, 2 while not that great still had its great moments, 3 is absolutely fabulous and 4 makes the fans even more happy. Frontier is also great and while Tides of Destiny is a bit okayyyy. I don’t think u should be really afraid on the chances of this game being good.

Maybe the first title will be the same as RF 1 in terms of experiments here but if they could pull it off, i believe the second one will be really great.^_^

    • Shippoyasha

Oh here we go with the daily otaku witch hunt. While the cute girl angle is nice, it’s absurd to say otaku gamers have absolutely no filter. It’s all the better if an otaku game is in depth and fun as well. And getting into ‘underage ogling’ is silly. It’s just the typical shame tactic people use in instances like this. And funny how everybody attacks this game regardless of the developer’s history.

You say you appreciate Katawa Shoujo and just turn around with a blunt attack on any girl games.

  • klkAlexar

I’m not the kind of person to dismiss a game because of how it looks but I hope RF5 doesn’t look like this.

    • Hexodious

      There won’t be a RF5.

      • Roger

      • JMaster3000

        No reason not to be.
AQL is still alive and the same RF team is working at AQL minus the coder of RF4 and maybe some other people who aren’t essential for a new RF game.

        • Hexodious

What? I thought they went bankrupt/disbanded/whatever last year?

          • klkAlexar

RF belongs to Marvelous, Neverland was just the developer. The same group that is doing Forbidden Magna is probably going to do RF5 since it was greenlit awhile ago.

          • Hexodious

That doesn’t really answer my question about the fuss of last year.

          • klkAlexar

Neverland went bankrupt, but it seems that some of the employees got folded into Marvelous.

          • Hexodious

Alright, that explains a lot, thanks. I’ll look more into it.

  • I hope this will be localized. 3DS need more rpg!

  • Aristides

Looking forward to a localization :3

  • I… I wish they didn’t all have gigantic, pointy elf ears.

    • Ethan_Twain

Well the real question here is whether the protagonist also has gigantic pointy elf ears. I don’t see any on the model, but there aren’t any 2D stills of him in these screenshots to make sure (because… you know. Not the point). See, if everyone in this fantasy world has pointy elf ears that’s fine. But if it’s a “spirit girl” only thing then one can only judge them to be different species. And if THAT’S the case then suddenly racism/slavery/caste system symbolism suddenly comes into play way more, kind of a territory you don’t wanna tread into lightly.

I feel like the entire thematic bent of this game is dependent on the nature of the protagonists’ ears. I trust Siliconera will keep the public posted on this important issue as news develops.

      • persona_yuji

In the cover of the game you see that the protagonist doesn’t have elf ears.

      • I think you’re over analyzing this a bit too much.

        • HarakiriKami

          I think he’s being facetious

          • With people making every little aspect of video games into a crisis it’s getting hard to tell whether posts like this are serious or not.

          • HarakiriKami

            Poe’s law is a bitch.

      • I find this rather concerning myself. This objectification of the female ear isn’t something to be taken lightly. Just what sort of statement is being made with this game?

Are we to understand that large, pointed years are a sign of attractiveness? The fact that no one has regular ears would seem to indicate that this is considered an unattractive trait.

Furthermore, if you look at the girl with purple hair, you’ll notice that the ears angle downwards, slightly. What does that mean? If you look at the screenshot of her further down, she has the least amount of total AP. Why is she being persecuted on the basis of what angle her ears are curved at?

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

same here ;/ or at lest different mythological races like Oni or something.

    • MrTyrant

You like smaller ones? or a mixed of big and smaller pointy ears?

  • jeof96

    Localization is still 2015. Dang..

    • JMaster3000

      its being localized?

  • Don’t understand why people seem disappointed by this already, it looks like it’s shaping up to be pretty fun. Love the art and character designs, +1 for elf ears!

    • MrTyrant

All hail elves. They should gather all the elf in Rune Factory and make an spin off with them lol

    • Shippoyasha

I like the clean style of the character designs. I kinda hope the ingame model could look like that someday. I guess it wouldn’t fly as far as the 3DS power is concerned. Not to mention Harvest Moon roots.

      • HarakiriKami

Uh, you know the 3DS is stronger than the Gamecube right?

Its more than capable, even if you have to render the top screen twice for 3D and then the bottom screen.
( the real reason is they’re going for this artstyle because they have assets like this already, stylistic choice to hit a certain demographic or they’re just tying to save some money and not go overboard on the graphics, which I applaud)

        • Shippoyasha

I kind of think it’s more because the developers are comfy making Harvest Moon style games so I don’t really blame them. I still expect the game to be fun and that’s all that matters.

I think more than the system power, it’s that the svelte character designs won’t show well in an over the top battle view. We only see that work better when camera is zoomed for action/fighters. They really need to go to 720p fidelity at least, with next gen handhelds. 1080p (or even higher!) is already there with smartphones.

          • HarakiriKami

Well the 3DS resolution is 800×240 so probably

  • persona_yuji

I’m not going to judge this game before I even play it… but… it’s missing some charm that Rune Factory had. I know that they are different games, but taking in mind that this game is made by the guys who made Rune Factory, I can’t help but feel that it’s lacking something… Maybe it’s just me, who knows.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I’ll keep my eyes on this….wait for a review

  • s07195

Still gonna have to get used to the direction and and chibi look, but I can get behind this game. I trust the RF team to give an enjoyable experience after RF3 and 4.

    • Roger

Same here….that 3-D chibi gives me mixed feelings. Final result will probably be good, though.

      • JMaster3000

        3D? Looks 2D to me.

        • HarakiriKami

          Its Isometric top down 3D

          • JMaster3000

The characters totally look 2D to me.

          • HarakiriKami

            3D models

  • Kornelious

This sure is looking great It combines Waifu’s with strategy! A DEADLY combination XD

Did this get announced for a localization yet? i can’t seem to keep up with all of the localizations lately =D

    • HarakiriKami

Yeah fire emblem did a smsashing job of selling a million + copies

  • want this so much

  • MrTyrant

Would buy it and would play it. This is not a Rune Factory so I don’t get what people are complaining about but I can understand that the chibi graphics looks ugly but I want to know if the events with the girls and main narrative are good enough to keep me entertained. Gameplay seems fine if it use something like VC.

    • HarakiriKami

The graphics are actually good. Simple and nice

  • Shippoyasha

The rooms look so…. lived in. Just a cozy level of clutter.

  • Doug Joseph

I just finished RF4, and Xseed made that translation great. Every character was fun to interact with. I would love to see this come over. Crossing my fingers, Xseed! Make it happen.

  • 9breaker

I think the game looks fine. Rune Factory, Harvest moon, etc. I love the things they make lol

  • Fintlook

I will most likely get this game it look simple and relaxing.

  • wahyudil

    Will get this

  • Wow, I saw this and thought it would look fun. Too bad there aren’t any bachelor characters :| way to leave out the female demographic.

    • Dream

Pretty much for the same reason why there are more clothes for females then there are for males at the mall. More males play video games than females do, which means that the main character will most likely be a male.

      • I’m not saying make the main character a female, just give us the option?

        • Dream

You can’t marry the same sex in Rune Factory, which is a series they made in the past. Also, I think it would creep players out if they are a guy (in real) going for a girl but making friends with other guys that are hitting on them. I know I would be xD but then again, it could be hilarious at the same time. The game I believe is going for more of a male audience. If they get enough feedback from female players (like for Rune Factory 4, feedback from girl players wanting to play as a girl in the game) then they will most likely add it in their next or future installment.

It is possible that there is same sex marriage, but they haven’t announced it yet or we haven’t seen anything that confirms it.

          • “Going for more of a male audience” well obviously, just like any other game with dating sim elements.
I’m not going to hold my breath for a female protag here (or in any future P4 remakes. Thanks, Atlas.)
