Nippon Ichi’s Vita Game Revealed As Great Edo Blacksmith

By Sato . July 22, 2014 . 5:07am

Nippon Ichi have been teasing a new PlayStation Vita game with clues of “gold” and “beautiful woman”. This week’s issue of Famitsu reveals the game as Oedo Blacksmith or Great Edo Blacksmith, a title with erotic elements. (Thanks, Game-Jouhou)

In Great Edo Blacksmith, the protagonist is a swordsmith, and only has one year remaining to live. The goal is to make money as a swordsmith and fall in love with a girl. The main part of the game revolves around making and selling swords and decorations. In order to gather material to make the goods, you’ll need to step into dungeons to mine minerals.

There are battles in the dungeons, and you’ll need to get help from hired allies to take them on. Great Edo Blacksmith also has some sort of “touching” feature with girls in the game. Here are the girls who’ve been introduced thus far:

Sayaka (voiced by Izumi Chiba) has the trademark style of a sideways ponytail. She’s positive but somewhat of a klutz.

Asaka (voiced by Shizuka Tsuji) doesn’t know much about business talk. While she’s quite the articulate girl, she also has a cute side to her that goes over well with customers.

Yugiri (voiced by Shizuka Ito) has an attractive face, figure, and good looks overall, but she’s clumsy and tends to be a pessimist.

According to Nippon Ichi, Great Edo Blacksmith is targeted at men in their 20s. It will contain erotic elements, as the company would like to turn it into a franchise similar to Criminal Girls.

Great Edo Blacksmith will be released in Japan on November 27, 2014 for PlayStation Vita.

I would kinda only want the crafting/store managing/dungeon crawling part of the game with dating sim elements if they needed to shoehorn it in. Oh well.

    • ThatGuy3190_7

Try any of the Rune Factory games.

      • raitouniverse

Oh I’m well aware. I’m speaking for my Vita brethren who don’t have that opportunity.

  • ekibyougami

    Wait. What.
    >Time management
    >Dungeon exploring
    >Hire mercs
Basically Recettear: Edo Blacksmith – Lewd version

  • Alex Sargeant

    I am very disappointed.

    Great Ero Blacksmith.

You had the perfect title and you blew it.

  • I missed read the title as “Great Ero Blacksmith” – hammering, tempering, etc but not as we know it. *wink wink*

Seriously, it sounds interesting just need to see character designs, gameplay, etc. Before I pass judgement.

  • Wrathful

Careful with the content, Nippon Ichi. Make sure there are not too many censorship material. I would like Japanese game companies to succeed but this is the sort of game that isolate the gamers in Western territory.

I would kill for another Recettear but I know it’s least likely. At least it’s comforting there are similar games like that elsewhere.

    • Tarkovsky

Well, they were never developed with the West in mind and I don’t see why they should change their ways. Games like these have always been intended for the Japanese market.

  • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owl

  • Dark Zerato

This game reminds me of Atelier series.

  • fyi1191

That picture and title doesn’t match at all.
The image is more like a Prostitute Game. Just look at how happy she is with the gold.

  • ThatGuy3190_7

Am I the only person whose mind instantly went to Rune Factory but without the lewdness?

  • Yan Zhao

This sounds just like Atelier, except for smithng. Im OK with that.

  • fairysun

So, adult version of Thousand Arms?!

    • rekka_zan

      Upvoting because Thousand Arms.
From the description, I imagine this will play similar to Recettear, though.

    • DS23

H shi- I never even thought of that.TA was a good time however many years ago it was. (so old)

  • Randgriz

As a man in my 20s this appeals to me!
This sounds almost harvest moon-like, i hope it has a good art style.

  • Mika Moreno

I’m not a man in my 20’s by any means, but this game sounds cool! Hope to see more soon.

  • Another game with ero elements coming from Nippon Ichi…groundbreaking.

  • lackofstyle

ah when i read the thing on the front page i thought this was gonna be like a male version of criminal girls, where you torture guys in their 20s……..sexually of course. it would of been ground breaking.

    • Too fresh and new for them. (Or many people.)

    • darke

Given that otaku are mostly herbivorous which usually implies being M, this might actually have some form of appeal to their target demographic if it’s females torturing the male MC. :P

  • All interest of this game plummeted. NIS, the rub game publisher. Either way the actual gameplay sounds like it could be enjoyable.

    • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

It’s like tearaway clothing mechanic. It seems to be turning into a mainstay in these style of games.

    • DyLaN

Just 2 game with that feature and suddenly NIS is a rub game publisher. OK.jpg

      • Pretty sure its more than 2. And yes considering NIS lately is more concerned about how lewd there games are, that aren’t Disgaea, I think they found their shtick and they are going to stick with it. Not only that, now they are teasing these types of games as something they are going to be proud of. Then there is NISA that now that they lost GUST and the Neptunia games they will localize anything.

        • DyLaN

I honestly only remember the Vita Criminal Girls and this that has rubbing feature or being particularly fanservicey. Mind telling which other NIS games that you think have the rubbing feature? Let’s see what NIS has/going to release in this 2 year:

          Disgaea D2
          Z/X game
          Battle Princess of Arcadias
The Witch and the Hundred Knight
Kamigami no Asobi (Fanservice for females)
          Criminals Girls Vita
If You Thought It Was Harem Paradise, It Was Yandere Hell
          htoL #NiQ
          Shin Hayarigami
          Kamikuro/Awakened Fate Ultimatum

Not counting the new game, only 2 is especially fanservicey, no? You may argue abt NISA being the case, but NIS doesn’t seem to have that much fanservice game (so far).

          • Ni ~Algidus~

I think he is speaking about NIS beign otaku centric not only the fanservice games.

          • Fair enough, just seems like the Vita itself is their outlet for these kinds of games and nothing else, minus Disgaea remakes and older ports.

        • Ni ~Algidus~

NIS chose that route themselves over the years. if they even try to change it’s fanbase would go “lol dafuq so NIS is going Dude Bro shooter now? they need to die! worst company ever!” etc. NIS is already a small game company if they piss off their fanbase they are damned

          • That’s a fair point, its probably too late to change their image now anyway.

  • Manny Being Manny

Sounds good. Hopefully Criminal Girls still sells even with the censoring and we’ll get this localized too.

And did people really think a game with a courtesan holding a Vita wouldn’t be a fanservice game?

    • I wouldn’t say I wasn’t expecting fanservice but not this kind of fanservice. I honestly thought it was just going to be some dating sim.

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

What a concept. So a man who only has one year to live wants to make as much money as possible and find a woman…with erotic elements. If they definitely go all out with the character designs of the times this could be a beautiful looking game.

However, being mentioned in the same sentence as Criminal Girls concerns me because I’m sure there might be censoring…but then again…this is targeted to men in the 20’s and in this case this is a blacksmith…they didn’t say teenager or students. So maybe with possibly older characters a full uncensored rated M Western release might not be out of the question?

    • It can certainly be possible but, it would depend on how involved these rubbing elements are I assume and what they show. Not out of the realm of reality though I guess.

      • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

Well every rubbing game on the market I have seen has been the “younger” so I guess my thoughts might only be a pipe dream lol!

    • Manny Being Manny

I think they mean its aimed at otaku, since the majority of otaku are 20s men. And otaku stuff often has younger looking characters.

      • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

Yes, that is true for the age range of course :P – anything from loli, moe to school girls to anything is for that audience too. However, I was curious about them using a dying Blacksmith looking for a girl – not a student blacksmith not a Blacksmith in training. Not to mention the mature looking women for the advertisements. I am only holding out that if these are “older” characters, (of course, he could be like Luke Ainsworth and that theory’s out of the water) there might not be a fear of having to heavily censor if it comes to the West. However, if it is being touted in the same sentence as Criminal Girls, they could be all younger looking.

      • Wtv

To use a real woman to sell a otaku game is kinda weird, actually.

But maybe it won’t be made for otakus, but “normal” men (not saying otakus aren’t normal). I never saw any otaku game saying that they’re making the game to some especific demographic.

And it’s not like otakus are the only perverts.

    • ishyg

“So maybe with possibly older characters a full uncensored rated M Western release might not be out of the question?”

Please make this happen. I’m not a fan of fanservice to be honest, but if this happened might as well jump in the full experience.

I’d be keeping this in the office though, can’t let my wife touch this.

  • Time Sage

Whelp there goes any interest I had

    • Pinkemon

Same here. I mean, if others like it that’s their thing but my first thought was “Oh, this sort of thing again.”

  • DesmaX

You know what could be cool? If they got thee actors to represent the caracters, intead of drawn stff. Seems like a waste to tease a whole week withreal actors and don’t use them to anything.

Cut the lolis, and don’t do BDSM like Cg, and I think it could be interessing.

EDIT: Typed this on a phone. Sorry for any mispellings

  • chroma816

    >Erotic elements.

We’re not getting it here, I guess.

    • DS23

ALL of the Senran Kagura series has been brought over so far and we’re even getting the newest Criminal Girls albeit with some content alterations… this making its way over wouldn’t surprise me at this point.

      • chroma816

To be fair, though, the SK games are being ported by XSeed, which is a lot lower on the radar than NISA (which in and of itself is pretty niche here). CG has to be censored, even a bit, and I’m from the camp that would rather not get the game at all rather than a neutered one.

But seeing as how this one is already targeted at “adults”, it’s possible to get an M rating here with no censorship and I’d be fine with that.

        • otakumike

Nisa is actually pretty good at localizing games though, so there’s always a chance.

    • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

We will, just with moderated content which will only cause anger amongst people. But I’m sure we will get it, eventually~.

  • Lol, so not dissimilar from their other stuff in target audience. They’re getting really “bold” lately, but I can’t take it seriously when it’s from them.

I hope they choose someone that doesn’t use a chibi look for their artist, lol.

    • kratoscar2008

“I hope they choose someone that doesn’t use a chibi look for their artist, lol.”

I hope you to be really really wrong, chibi done right (CGs) is the best. More games should have SD characters designs.

      • But if the game has erotic elements. . .? Isn’t that gonna look funny? ^u^;

        • kratoscar2008

I dont see how that is bad, SDs are used to empathize comedy relief anyways and being cute at the same time.

  • Kornelious

Well they sure didn’t hide the “Erotic elements” fact……I shouldn’t be surprised bu this does seem a bit bold…..Either way, it sounds interesting, but I need to see what the game looks like first so I can judge it :P

  • Demeanor

This is odd. I mean, it makes me think of Thousand Arms, but srsly? One year to live? That’s REALLY a turnoff, how is the mc supposed to enjoy stuff? Also, blatantly mentioning erotic elements is not very promising imho.
If anything this also resembles the atelier formula: limited time, craftsmanship, dungeon and mats, char interaction. But don’t go soiling my beloved series with impending death and erotic elements :(
    And males lol XD

  • Astraea’s Eyebrow

Kinda sounds like Recettear, but with kinky stuff lol.

  • AndyLC

“And then your sword has a dungeon in it and there’s geopanels”

    Nippon Ichi, make it happen

  • Göran Isacson

Kinda curious what graphic style they’re going with here. If it’s gonna be in the same wheelhouse as Disgaea and Criminal Girls, or if it will look a bit more realistic and like the pictures they’ve teased us with so far.

    • kratoscar2008

I hope its like CGs, the chibi art is just so damm cute. I would like less blushing boobs though.

  • leingod

I’m still in my 20s so I guess I can play it XD

  • Carlos Daniel Flores Loreto

Criminal Girls with kimonos and blacksmiths? I’m in.

  • Bob Slim

I new this game was gonna be a fanservice game. Its only 1 thing that I hope for this game and that is. Please no lolis I dont want it to get censored

  • Robert Cisneros

the game has a touching feature involving girls……………………………………… so lets just guess before it gets a US release that that’ll be censored.

    Sounds interesting tho

  • Lester Paredes

What is with all the ‘touch anime girl’ games? I mean, I’m not against them (I am getting Senran Kagura Shivovi Versus and Akiba’s Trip and hoping that game with the big guns and high school girls gets a localization), but it seems that every Japanese game that gets announced has this feature. Is this the only thing that can be thought of for a touch screen?

    • DarkLight

You mean Bullet Girls.I dont see a problem with the “touch anime girl” gimmcks, sure it might seem werid to other but as long as no one see’s me doing that I’m fine,But then again I’m pervy anyway lol

      • Lester Paredes

Bullet Girls, yes. Thank you. And yes, they are certainly segments that must be played in private or at the very least, on mute.

    • darke

Well apart from minigames, there’s really not much you can use it for. I mean, look at all the really popular phone/tablet games, they all use the touchscreen in ways that either can be easily mimicked by physical controls, or they’re basically minigames, like you’d expect to find in a ‘real’ game. (Like lockpicking or that sort of thing.)

      • Lester Paredes

True enough. I would like to see it used for more than that though. But then, when it does get used for more than menu selection, reviewers and people complain about shoe-horned in touch controls. Damned if they do, damned if they don’t, I suppose. If only thy could manage to do a game like Silent Hill Shattered Memories with the touch screens… that’d be awesome.

  • d19xx

    NIS owns my wallet…

  • DarkLight

Wonder if this will get a localzation?Looks interesting,

  • Napalnman1231

Looks interesting too, but why reminds me the Atelier Series this plot?

  • Randgriz,bcv09UQ,MOW0Q4R,ErlDJMc#0
Seems like mining aspect is alot like Cladun (Classic Dungeon) and then battles transition into typical Dungeon Crawler battles. Could be intresting!

  • WhyWai

wow, a dating simulation. chance of localisation = zero. give up waiting and import it people!

    • DyLaN

Frm the scans, it seems to be a mix of dungeon crawler and dating sim so it does have a chance.

    • darke

What are you talking about? Conception II and the Ar Tonelico series came over, and the two Surge Concerto games are too; all of them are “romance plus gameplay”.

If anything this has more of a chance to come over then other games since from memory none of the girls look like a ‘loli’ character.
