Last year, Capcom announced Breath of Fire 6 as a smartphone, tablet, and browser game as the latest entry in the RPG series. While we haven’t heard about it much since then, Capcom shared a look at the game’s animated trailer.

The trailer for Breath of Fire 6: Guardians of the White Dragon shows various key characters along with what appears to be the protagonist and the main heroine of the game among others.

While details on the game’s story and system are still light, the trailer ends with the phrase “the new story about a dragon, now begins.”

Breath of Fire 6 launches sometime in Spring 2015. Capcom also stated that they were in the process of evaluating whether the game will be released outside of Japan.

Oh Breath of Fire, you deserve so much better than this.

    • LordHyper

That throwing up Madotsuki picture is a perfect reaction for Capcom’s less than stellar decisions.

  • http://hanzoadam.tumblr.com/ Hanzoadam

I’ll have to keep an eye out

  • Kaitsu

I just hope it’s actually good.

  • Suriel Cruz

    No.

  • leingod

One of these days I’ll end up throwing my phone to a brick wall. My fave gaming franchises are all going to mobile now and I’m starting to hate the damn thing.

  • Pinkemon

Oh. I didn’t even know there had been a Breath of fire 5 already.

    • leingod

Dragon Quarter was considered to be the 5th, apparently.

      • Randy Marsh

Well, it is called Breath of Fire 5: Dragon Quarter in Japan….

      • solbalmung

        Apparently?
No, it is the official Fifth entry in BoF, even though it’s the black sheep among it’s elder brothers (people crying that it’s not the good old BoF with it’s green and vast lands, and also being very hard for BoF) fans of BoF and JRPG alike consider it as a masterpiece.

        • Ninten

It was a great RPG. At least it tried something new. Don’t get me wrong, I love the older Breath of Fire games, but they didn’t really stand out much next to the likes of Phantasy Star, FF, CT and other RPGs at the time.

    • sd28

i know im still waiting for one

  • wererat42

Even if it wasn’t a mobile game, just going by the trailer it looks like a pretty generic JRPG. If the Forest Clan guy hadn’t shown up, I wouldn’t have even though it was Breath of Fire.

Who knows, maybe the actual game is going to be worthy of the name. Only time will tell.

  • ElAbuelo69

    Da fawk is this?

  • MadokaXHomura

T_T why?why Capcom?why do you keep doing this?you keep destroying awesome series, canceling Megaman, murdering Resident Evil,Devil May Cry unknown amount of Street Fighter IV and whatever game you did in that i cant remember at the moment. now they are throwing Breath of Fire on IOS.they are kiling all of my favorite series.Whats next?
and where is the Blue Haired Ryu?

  • Andrew Winn

It’s just sad to see, what was, and still is an Awesome series, being Reduced to This, WTF Capcom.

  • Alos88

Is that guy with the ever-so-slightly-blueish hair supposed to be Ryu? And what’s Milla doing in a Breath of Fire game?

    • wererat42

Don’t think it’s Ryu. The main site just refers to him/her as “hero,” who seems to be customizable.

      http://www.bof6.jp/pc/index.html#!/character/4/

Also the blonde girl is Nina. Apparently as of Dragon Quarter Ninas no longer have wings.

      • leadintea

At least DQ tried to do something different and gave her wing like appendages. This one isn’t even trying at all!

  • Tienron

i’m sorry but i’m saying no to this….breath of fire deserved much more

  • Prithivi

Breath of Fire II was my first JRPG. I love JRPG thanks to this great saga and I love every Breath of Fire game (even Dragon Quarter, which I find incredibly unique, challenging, and oh my God, what an incredible art style and soundtrack that game had). That being said, this will be the very first BoF that I won’t play.

    • Demeanor

Yeah, I loved Quarter too, it had a very unique style and atmosphere, it surely did have an identity of its own.
If only they’d implemented the Dragon mechanics better… just the warrior form, with lackluster effects and “focus focus focus one-two to the face” being the only viable “tactic” given the % restrictions.
I REALLY hope you’ve tried BoF3, best game in the series hands down for me. The dragon gene system is simply the best.

      • Prithivi

Yup, I’ve played every game in the series and I love BoF III (although II is may favourite). Momo and Pecoros are among my favourite BoF characters ever!

        • Ash_Riot

BoF5 is a masterpiece. So is 4. 3 was really good for its time. Never played 1 and 2, need to get to them someday.

    • ishyg

Breath of Fire 3 was one of my first JRPGs, and I was just amazed at the dragon splicing mechanic. It was so awesome. After that, I followed every BoF game and even sought out the previous 2 games.

I’ll try this BoF, but I really don’t want it to go this route. It has so much potential (the franchise), especially on last-gen. I wonder why Capcom still pushed through this despite closing the servers for Dragon’s Dogma Quest.

  • awat

Okaay… WTF !??! man wtf??? they ruined this series F***

  • CDM

I’m happy the series is continuing and all, but…

This isn’t exactly what I had in mind. And I’m almost sure that this won’t be as successful as Capcom wants it to be, thus ruining chances for more sequels in the future once again.

    • leadintea

Precisely. This is really a lose-lose situation for this series. If the game is successful, Capcom will think this is the way to go for the series and keep pumping out these browser games. If it’s not successful, Capcom will think that the series really isn’t popular and we may never see a BoF game again. Personally, I really don’t know what to do. I really wish there was some way to let Capcom know that we fans want a traditional BoF game and not this crap they’re making because I really don’t want to support this game just to get the next installment of the series.

  • SlickRoach

    It’s like Nuts & Bolts and Thief 2014 all over again ;_;

    • aizen310

Well, Thief was at least enjoyable. I mean, there were some redeeming qualities.

  • Derek E Nay

Has there been any gameplay shown or even announced how it will be played?? Or should I think this is going to be another crappy free-to-play crap? Because I believe a free-to-play game can be good… but… I need to know just what IS the game first…

    • MK

There are some pictures showing battles similar to 2D beat em up games and it has city building or something like that

  • Warboss Aohd

For the Love of God, someone buy them out already!

  • http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/mgbenz mgbenz

Eww. It doesn’t even look remotely like a Breath of Fire game. In fact it looks so generic it’s just painful.

  • I hope it gets a vita release if it does well on mobile, I like the art it looks great.

  • Brandonmkii

I’ll guess I’ll take the high road and choose to remain optimistic.

  • nobitakun

Where’s nina?!?!?! I deny to accept that Milla Maxwell clone to be Nina…Crapcom…something to say?

    • Zython

Apparently, the blonde girl IS Nina. I understand your confusion, considering she doesn’t have wings and…

      *throws keyboard through computer screen*

  • LonelyGamer

Cacpom, i now put your name in my Shit list right under Square-Enix

  • rinalicat

I love Breath of Fire but…I don’t really like this…I mean, I like the artwork but this ISN’T Breath of Fire for me. Also I read somewhere that the protagonist isn’t Ryu but a character you customise yourself who is from the same village? That…isn’t Breath of Fire and I’m rather disappointed to be honest…but I will try to be optimistic…maybe it won’t be so bad..?

    • Brandon Coley

Truth is that’s the problem with the industry today its the gamers who want a game from the series using the same character or want something new and than start complaining…which I’m not saying you are therefore, I’m talking about those who are guilty of this. Easily say this game sucks before playing it or watching someone else play. I always say give the game a shot before easy assumptions. BoF3 was my favourite one in the series but, I’m not looking for newer BoF to have ryu so I’m thrill there using or creating a new character.

      • Veedot

But Ryu (and Nina) is a MUST HAVE FOR A BOF GAME! Its like playing a Legend of Zelda with no Link you can’t do that. Plus this game has zero resemblance to anything that made BoF BoF, You’re entitled to your opinion but I see no way of defending this game

        • wererat42

To be fair, Dragon Quarter had zero resemblance to anything that made BoF BoF. But it wasn’t a mobile game, so it didn’t get this level of hate.

Also, don’t think anyone’s mentioned this yet, but it’s coming out for the PC too.

          • Brandon Coley

Good call and to veedot I thank you for validating my opinion its rare to see that on the net. I’m more of I would like to test the waters because I may like it while others hate it.

          • Brandon Coley

I also relies something this is only a trailer for the game no gameplay. There a lot of work that was put into this and it looks really good and clean. I’ll just wait to release to check it out

          • Veedot

But it still had Ryu,Nina and a unique artstyle to call its own, this looks like a game that anime character would play in the background of an episode. This game is soulless

  • Demeanor

    Are they mocking us???
Any way, that was the most generic rpg intro I have ever seen in my life (and I’m easily pleased). They didn’t even get the hair color right!

  • Dede Ogbe

What in the world have they done to this series….

  • TrueDefault

Why can’t they just call it something else instead of Breath of fire and risk alienating fans/changing the tradition of the brand?

  • Ric Vazquez

Yay one of my favorite JRPG franchises s back *reads for mobile* Capcom just entered my shit list until they make another Megaman.

  • http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/21421.html?type=4 Kashell

Capcom has reached yet another all time low. I’ll just enjoy my memories of Breath of Fires I through V and think of this one as something else.

    • Godmars

No. They bought office space in “All Time Low” territory.

We are talking about the company that put finished content on a disc and called it DLC. Never really apologized for it.

You never leave “All Time Low” after that. You become grounded there.

      • http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/21421.html?type=4 Kashell

I guess they can have multiple all time lows. XD What game are you referring to, by the way?

        • Godmars

Some of the Street Fighter IV releases. Street Fighter vs Tekken as well , I think. Not sure.

  • Zantetsuken_Gilgamesh

Is this really a Breath of Fire game or just a game with a Breath of Fire name getting tagged on?

    • Monterossa

since it’s on smartphones it must be the latter.

  • KazukiNanbu

breath of fire is back…..but in name only

  • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

They should make a companion 3DS/Vita title, I doubt this will leave Japan but I imagine even Japanese fans of the series would feel disappointed too. Maybe not, but like to imagine so.

    • ネオフォトン ~ Neo

They were indeed just as disappointed as Western fans were.

  • ネオフォトン ~ Neo

I’m still convinced this was a game that had nothing to do with BoF but merely had the franchise name slapped on to it to help it stand out a bit more.

Unfortunately, Capcom hasn’t been doing that particularly well in my book, so I’ll just be passing on this in hopes they do a proper BoF installment down the line. One that was intended to be one from the get-go.

  • Yan Zhao

This looks nothing like BoF and more like some generic JRPG…on a smartphone no less.

You’d think Capcom would learn by now.

  • Eilanzer

WOW capcom are RLY trying to get the title of most hated company O_o

  • J_Joestar

How can that be the heroine if she doesn’t have any wings or anything even loosely resembling wings?

  • SetzerGabbiani

Not going to judge the overall package before I see gameplay and how the dragon system works in this game. However, I can analyze this debut trailer:

    Hero/Ryu without blue hair?
Nina (presumably…could be another char) without wings?
That green haired girl may have something to do with Bleu given the hood and purple color of the outfit.

What is Capcom playing at here? Though they might not think so, BOF is iconic in the development of the RPG audience in the west. If they’re going for a reboot in the super low budget category…fine, but how can you debut a trailer like this and call it Breath of Fire?…They didn’t even feature a dragon in the anime.

    • FFmax

Apparently this Nina will eventually get wings later in the story in a interview I read about this game. The MC is customizable this time around but he’ll probably have blue hair and the name Ryu as default. It’s way too early to tell what this game will be like but I hope it will at least be fun. I’m just glad they’re making another Breath of Fire game after so many years it’s better than nothing and the fact that they delayed this all the way spring next year shows that they at least care and don’t want to rush it out.

      • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

        Ah, so they changed it.

    • Guest

Those aren’t Ryu and Nina. This “game” already had a lot of info revealed earlier last or this year, IIRC. But yeah, these are other characters with other names.

    • Jan Daryll Palanca

there was a green dragon tho~

      • SetzerGabbiani

Was that a dragon? Hard to tell.

  • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

You know, I genuinely feel sorry for whoever sang that song on the trailer. She sounds good, but now her song will forever be associated with this bastardized version of “Breath of Fire”.

  • Jan Daryll Palanca

ohh.. wow… this is a LOT to take in….. and it HURTS so bad.. WTF Capcom…just wtf….
just the thought of embarking on a new journey with Ryu and Nina is enough to make me want to cry… and now i just want to cry from how they turned the Bof series into a browser game…

  • Göran Isacson

    Welp…

I think only the Megas here can succinctly summarize my emotions here:

    http://youtu.be/IXNnPuIme48?t=3m46s

  • Chris Hodges

    *sniff sniff* I smell microtransactions!

  • Shinobikens

I wish mobile gaming never existed. All it does is kill the industry and hope all mobile ports fail horribly

  • Shindoi Hayato

I understand that keitai gaming is huge in Japan and all, but this is a bummer. Also, the new art style isn’t appealing at all. It looks like a game in the Tales series…

    • biskmater

You speak like that’s a bad thing.
Though it personally reminds me of Rune Factory.

      • Shindoi Hayato

I just prefer the more classic BoF art style for BoF games. Not a slight against the Tales games really. I worded that sentence poorly.

  • Callonia

Evaluating for release in west? Haven’t capcom seen how well rpgs been doing lately? Haven’t they seen hyperdimension neptunia? XD

  • shenlong234

Welp, I see the final nail being put in the coffin where the BoF franchise lies in.

  • Ash_Riot

    This doesn’t exist to me.

  • Michael Cortorreal

. _ . The legendary Breath of Fire series, released for the cellphone’s market.
This just shows me how much faith Capcom has for this game, or series in general, they are throwing it to the market with the most demograpic out there.

It will be a cheap game to buy, but I still wished this made on the handheld consoles at least.

Its not that I totally hate the market they’re releasing it into, but this leaves me a bad taste on my mouth…I mostly see cellphones at that, cellphones, not dedicated gaming devices.

  • Richard N

Uhh, I’m guess I’m the only one excited for this. I’ll be here in the minority who actually enjoy IOS games.

  • epy

Ugh, it feels like a ten year old kicked me in the sack.

  • Learii

I love the series one of my fav but now BoF6 is on Iphone? =( why Capcom why

    • Just Tim

…because Breath of Fire doesn’t make Resident Evil-level money.

      • Learii

        iphone even make it wrost

  • iamakii

I never knew this day would come.

  • Kornelious

Man this looks to beautiful to be on just the phone :(

    • Brion Valkerion

… um… you know its just a promotional video right. Its not hard to put a video on a phone/mobile device anymore.

  • Phant

Even if this ends up being utter shit (and that’s a pretty likely if), I’d still like to play it in English, Capcom.

  • Foxeh Shihōin

i think i’ll just buy the 1st BoF on virtual console.. =.=

  • Alex

This is why Capcom is going bankrupt.

  • Brion Valkerion

Meh, hoped they would not go full generic anime but they did. Gameplay would have to be something special for them to get out of this grave.

  • Michael Connell

If it were possible I’d raise my middle toes along with my middle fingers at Capcom for this.

  • Chardo

why does the main girl not have wings?
why does the blue haired guy show no signs of turning into a dragon?
    WHY IS IT IPHONE exclusive!?

(I will still play it anyways)

  • DragKudo

    :( :D

  • disgaea36

I’m so heated like seriously wtf this is why I hate mobile games and indies gives these big wigs an excuse to slack off and make half booty games smh I’m done looks like I’m gonna have to stick to the old goodies and whatever few decent game comes out. smh

  • Just Tim

Color me not surprised; I’m not gonna find it hard to believe if Capcom is using Japanese sales profits just to buoy international releases.

  • M’iau M’iaut

Guys, please do remember this only dates something which was reported a year ago or more. Please don’t pick at old scabs.

  • soulz

WHYYYYY?! When I first heard about this I was hoping it was just a side game to the series, but no it’s a full on sequel.

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

    Capcom hates Shenmue?

  • CheeseCake

Fandoms that dont like/hate/disappointed with Capcom. Since they never got Shenmue 3. And they consider Yakuza to be an inferior, although still fun, spirtual sucessor to Shenmue

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

You’re mixing your metaphors, that’s Sega

  • CheeseCake

Ahh shit I’ll edit it out then

  • CheeseCake

    Whelp my comment got deleted.
