Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode 3 Pays Homage To The Original Phantasy Star

By Sato . August 5, 2014 . 5:31pm

Phantasy Star Online 2 will get its next major update, called “Episode 3,” later this month, which features a new look for the lobby , along with additions to the interface and character creation. 4Gamer reports a few other things that will be added in the update.

The Episode 3 update will introduce a new monster by the name of Nyau. This super-dimensional cat is actually an homage to the speaking cat, Myau, from the very first Phantasy Star game.

025 026

Nyau’s defense is really high, so in order to defeat him, you’ll need to destroy his weapon when he drops it, which makes him cry, leaving an opening for some hits. Destroying his weapon also gives you a chance to get a rare drop.

027 028

However, while this cat may sound like a crybaby, he can actually perform destructive two-hand swinging moves and call out powerful enemies, so you might not want to underestimate the little guy.

 029 030

Episode 3’s first chapter of the main story is called “Where Does the Ash Medium Dance?” It will revolve around the girl shown in the above images, called Sukunahime, a.k.a. the Ash Medium.

031 032

Kotoshiro is a Sukunahime’s guardian, and will also play a big role in the story of the new chapter.

Phantasy Star Online 2’s Episode 3 update goes live on August 27, 2014 in Japan.

unless this game gets localized then i dont care

    • Adrian Duran

      try importing

      • jchill

paying twice as much and waiting 3 months to play one game? not happening

        • Vanadise

Twice “free” is still “free”, and you’ll only be waiting 3 months if your internet connection is really, really slow.

          • jchill

            this is free to play?

          • $18114340

Essentially, yes. Cosmetics and certain features can be bought through microtransactions but otherwise the game is free to play.

You’ll need a Japanese street address IIRC but there’s a guide on the internet somewhere for how to sign up for this game.

            Unless that was sarcasm.

          • 하세요

You only need an address if you plan on using Arks Cash directly from your credit card. You can use this method to get AC without an address. Haven’t heard any complaints about it. I’m cheap as fuck so exploit as much Free in F2P as I can.

          • jchill

not sarcasm, and all of that isnt worth it

          • Niles Schwarz

You don’t need a Japanese street address to sign-up

      • Importing? The game is free to play and download. Just download it with the english patch and have at it.

  • ZEROthefirst

<.< I always hated Nyau, in the original and the Generations remake.

    • aizen310

      He was rather strong though.

      • ZEROthefirst

Yeah and he died pretty easily too unless you REALLY level him up.

        • aizen310

I always managed to reach Level 30 with every party member. Level 30 was the MAX in the original Master System version. My main problem was usually Noah. Weak physical, limited options to replenish MP… not a good combo for a wizard.

          • ZEROthefirst

Completely forgot about Lutz, it’s been a while since I’ve played PS1/Generation. I definitely have to agree with Lutz being the worse off of the 2 it terms of how frail they are, I did notice in the Generation remake for it though that Lutz is a bit more sturdy… still not someone you want to get hit, but much better in my opinion than his original counterpart..

          • aizen310

All I remember is that Myau quite often single handedly saved my party’s a**, while Lutz was good for a shot or two, he didn’t really mattered. Now I don’t know if I remember right, but you can equip guns on Lutz to be less of a shame. Guns had fix damage output.

          • Barrylocke89

Odin got guns. Noah/Lutz could only equip crappy staffs. He was only useful in a pinch or on bosses.

  • TheGunheart

…I don’t wanna beat him, I want him as a pet!

    • 하세요

It wouldn’t surprise me if they release a Mag based on it.

  • Spirit Macardi

He’s an enemy?! Screw that, I want it as a new playable race! D:

    • Rose Spinoza

      my thoughts exactly!

  • KoRLumen

During my stay in Tokyo, I saw so much advertising and merchandise for this game… It hurt so much :c

On topic, though, Nyau looks so awesome. Props to the callback lol.

  • HerosLight

So many updates for the 27th, can’t wait for the new class.

I’m ready to see all blocks full of Lv1 Bouncers once the servers are up, including myself. I still have 6 reset tickets, so I’m ready to play around and see what works and what doesn’t.

      • Ferrick

I’m ready to see [player] has reached level 14 messages when either falzes appear

      • zzzSleeping

I think most saved up the 99x orders to lvl up bouncer

  • Kornelious

………………….(Sigh)…..I guess I’ll just have to keep out hope for a PS4 G version or whatever :(

  • Tyler Beale

It’s official. SEGA doesn’t like Western money. I figured the power of Miku would help us….guess not.

  • aizen310

    Episode 3
At least SEGA can count to three, not like some western developer we all know very well.

  • *sigh* Another day, another quickie update on PSO2, and another reminder that we don’t have it here in the West. ( T – T )

I wonder if they’re at least getting interest from Western publishers who want to take it on, like how Trion nabbed distribution rights for Archeage here in the West? If Sega doesn’t want to throw a lot of money/resources at keeping it up — I get that it’s potentially high risk — then maybe someone else would? Like En Masse (TERA), Nexon (Dragon Nest) or Perfect World (Neverwinter)?

I mean, they washed their hands of the Southeast Asia version and let AsiaSoft handle that one — AND THEY TRANSLATED IT INTO ENGLISH! Heck, let AsiaSoft distribute that version out here, I don’t care. Just stop…. not doing anything with it, Sega West.

  • CartmanKusanagi

After seeing this, and having just marathoned PSI through IV, am I the only one who wants to see another Phantasy Star similar to the classic games rather than everything starting with Online? I’m not hating on Online (heck, like many of you, I’m hoping PSO2 finally gets a Western release), but it seems to be all PS is nowadays.

    • Jeffrey Thrash

I know. I would probably just wait for a similar game like Pier Solar, though; after less-than-glowing reviews for games like NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams and Sonic 4, I’m sure SEGA is hesitant to try to bring back another classic franchise. There’s still hope with Atlus making this the dormant franchise they bring back, though.

    • Jeffrey Thrash

Speaking of classic Phantasy Star, is Phantasy Star III really as bad as fans say, or is it just “okay,” like Sonic Chronicles? I’m just curious.

      • CartmanKusanagi

It’s not really bad or anything, just decent. It’s not as good as I, II, and IV, though (because it was handled by an entirely different team). Still, if you find it, give it a try.

  • TheBlackRabbit

uhhh the site has been down for a lil bit now.

  • Jeffrey Thrash

I have seriously started playing the Ragnarok games just to get a similar PSO2 experience, with a proper English translation.
