Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson launched in Japan earlier this month, and producer Kenichiro Takaki recently talked to Inside Games on his hopes to see his games reach fans outside of Japan sooner than later.

During the interview, Inside Games mentioned that the series has expanded outside of Japan and asked the producer to share his thoughts on the reaction from foreign fans.

“They’re so passionate, and it always surprises me,” exclaims Takaki. “People from other countries who purchase the game would often take a picture after making their purchase and line it up next to their country’s flag saying ‘check this out’ and then sending it to me.”

He continues, “At first, I thought of it as a specialized product for Japan. I didn’t even think about releasing it outside of Japan. And now, it has expanded across Asia, North America, and Europe, and I’m very grateful.”

“Everyone must like boobs. Boobs go beyond words,” Takaki says with a laugh.

Inside Games adds that they’re looking forward to seeing further developments in foreign countries.

“I’d really like things to expand to where we can narrow the gap between the releases in Japan [and the rest of the world], as much as possible.”

Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson is currently available in Japan for Nintendo 3DS.

  • Firion Hope

    I also want that please!

  • Shinobikens

I never understand the mindset of “Nobody outside of my country will want this”. How do they know unless they try

    • VolticWind

It’s called cultural ignorance. It’s something nearly all Japanese developers are guilty of expressing at some point or another. Not saying that as a bad thing, just something that happens.

      • Shinobikens

I mean I understand most of the American market is the standard casual “If it’s not a shooter I refuse to play it” type but you can’t make money unless you take risks. And you HAVE TO ADVERTISE IT. Good God Japanese companies localize games and they don’t advertise them at all and wonder why they don’t sell

        • HarakiriKami

Perhaps they’d rather make some money off the low sales they can get than risk pulling a tomb raider where they spend way too much on advertising and dont get the proportional sales necessary.

          • Shinobikens

If you know how to market you don’t have to spend tons on advertisement

          • HarakiriKami

            True.

            But Microsoft tho.

Microsoft will not stop till you know the Surface Pro 3 exists.

But we will never buy it because its overpriced.

They know this, but still they spend 400 million on NFL deals for coaches to walk around and use surface pro 3′s and shill the product like nobodies business as it takes over my hulu

            But still,we refuse it

          • Shinobikens

Your example is way off topic for the product we’re talking about though. These are niche games get little to no advertising. They just need a marketing rep to get the word out and have that word spread around farther than the niche market the game targets because the people who are for sure interested are gonna fucking know regardless of advertisements

          • Death Metal

            Shinobikens gets it.

          • HarakiriKami

My point is microsoft will throw money at something till it sticks. Even if the consumers dont like it

          • HarakiriKami

            Read in between the lines

        • Tarkovsky

Sorry to burst your bubble, but marketing/advertising doesn’t always work. I’ve said this countless number of times. You can market games like Okami, Muramasa, Dragon’s Crown, Akiba’s Trip, Sorcery Saga, Guided Fate Paradox, Criminal Girls, XBlaze Code Embryo and even Senran Kagura as hard as you like but the sad reality is that it will only have a minimal effect on sales especially in the West.

Niche games are niche for a reason. Same goes the other way. games don’t always need marketing to sell well. Take Demon’s Souls as the best example of this generation. No advertising no nothing, new IP, super hardcore, extremely generic looking and it still sold a lot purely by word of mouth. Dark Souls II on the other hand got shit load of marketing and advertisements but the final result is not much better than Demon’s or Dark which got minimal marketing. So much so that you can say that the money spent on marketing was a huge waste. What the Souls game have in their advantage though is that medieval fantasy setting compared to the games I’ve mention which either have exotic art directions or are basically anime.

Having spoken to many many “casual gamers” who don’t follow game related news, graphics is the number thing at the top of their list when they purchase a game. I’ve tried to introduce games like Fire Emblem and many other Japanese games to them and they’d say it look like crap compared to GTA and COD and ignore it even though they know that it received critical reception from game sites.. That’s the sad fact of the average American consumer. They judge the book by it’s cover. Sometimes one needs to learn how to pick it’s battles and marketing these niche games is just a waste of money and ultimately a risk not worth taking especially since the target audience their aiming at follows news sites like Siliconera and peruse the forums of NISA and Xseed.

      • AuraGuyChris

Like how Pokemon is so mainstream in Japan which explains why they get a lot of Pikachu with sucky move sets instead of us?

      • Renaldi Saputra

we can’t blame them at all. I believe they had tried many times back then, or they’ve seen the experiences from another older developers on bringing their games outside japan.

  • http://nsider2.com/forums Oscar

As someone who doesn’t live in Japan, this is really nice to hear. I love the series and am glad that Takaki, and Marvelous and Xseed in general, have been very supportive of the Senran Kagura fanbase.

I’m glad he realizes the simple fact that not everyone enjoys murder simulators with over-emphasized graphics, love for guns, blood, and excessive gore. :)

Hopefully we get Senran Kagura 2 real soon and Estival Versus finally get a reveal. Hope it’s on Vita too :D

  • Michael Richardson

Fanservice is great and all, but I’m excited because of how genuinely fun and well-designed games like Shinovi Versus and Deep Crimson appear. Also, Burst stays fun long after one has become accustomed to the boobs.

    • Guest

Exactly the reason I liked Burst. I’m not really a fan of fanservice to tell the truth, but the fun gameplay/good graphics/nice soundtrack/interesting visual novel parts made me saw this series differently after playing it.

  • Xerain

I like to believe that Kenichiro Takaki was the inspiration for Issei in Highschool DxD.

  • leingod

Well, I do like boobs… but yeah, the games are fun beyond that, and that’s what makes the games appealing. So YES PLEASE! Narrow the release gap!

  • TrueDefault

    Kenichiro Takaki for president!!

  • http://nichegamer.net/ bf313

Seriously love this guy, seems like a really chill dude. It’s nice to see a producer of a niche series actually recognize the overseas love of the franchise.

  • Chardo

I actually took one of the pictures that where sent to takakis twitter back when shinovi versus was released, its the one with a fat maine coon cat, a bottle of mexican jarritos, a vita with SV and a figure of ritsuko akizuki, I have to say, Im so happy and proud that that collective picture we sent him actually created an impact.

  • Death Metal

Sadly the gap won’t be narrowed because: Xseed.

  • Renaldi Saputra

maybe I’m not a fans of the series or sexual boobs/ass fanservice games. But it’s indeed nice to see the producer got pumped of releasing one of niche games series in the west. Hopefully he will be able to go through all the hardness of the fate and reception of a niche localized japanese game in the west

  • TheCynicalReaper

I love Takaki. He talks about boobs so highly, but really what he’s saying is that he just wants to bring people happiness. Ultimately his goal as a creator is to give everyone a fun time with a good story, good characters, and of course boobs.
Takaki, like Yoko Taro, is a creator that just wants to reach people in some way, whether by making them reevaluate their emotions or by just giving them peacefully fun escapism. I really admire creators like that.

    • Anontastic

      Agreed!

….But I really love them when they design their games well, too…

    • Renaldi Saputra

      Oh people these days

      • HarakiriKami

        lmao I know right?

        We’re all crazy

        • Renaldi Saputra

          >Boobs make you happy
          Hmmm, happy?

I just think “boobs make you pervert and makes you wanna touch every woman’s breast in public when seeing them.”

Yeah, it makes you horny easier…

          • Alejandro Vivas

Is there something wrong with being a little pervert? It’s in our human nature to be a bit pervert, hell its even healthy to be so. If you’re homosexual then i might understand your dislike for boobs and such but please… why would you come here and say such thing to the people that like these games.
Does the game hurt your feelings somehow? perhaps you’re a girl with mosquito bites as tits hahaha.

          • TheCynicalReaper

            Poe’s Law, mate.
I don’t know if you’re joking or seriously this ridiculous.

          • HarakiriKami

Nah Im not about that life.

  • Kyosuke Yoshino

“Everyone must like boobs. Boobs go beyond words,” Takaki says with a laugh.

Takaki is a good man :)

  • Arcueid Brunstud

I’m all honesty I thought the game was very fun. I would gladly buy the sequel even if it didn’t have big tits. Besides big butts are better hehe

  • http://randomc.net/ Croos

This seems to be good news to people who have been waiting for a localization. and yes boobs transcends all languages, nations, time and space.

  • Kayriss Wins

Fantastic, that’s what I love to hear Takaki, I’d LOVE for the series to release like less than a month after Japan that would be great.

  • http://hanzoadam.tumblr.com/ Hanzoadam

Thats cool if it comes true

  • Milewide

He gets it! He gets it!

I still won’t buy the game but HE GETS IT!

    • HarakiriKami

      Yu better buy that SK2

  • devilmaycry0917

ok then hurry up releasing those 2 vita games

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      Hacks…..

  • phayroent

Marvelous needs to make a better localization deal than they have with XSEED if this is to happen. XSEED is good, but they are a small company and don’t have the resources to do all of the things they want to do that fast. See Trails in the Sky. Since XSEED refuses to localize anymore fanservice games, they might have a little extra to put into faster localization, but they still have a lot to do.

    • leingod

Maybe Marvelous can support XSEED’s efforts by injecting resources or something? Dunno, but I won’t lash out at XSEED. It’s thanks to those guys we’re even getting the games in the first place.

    • Lalum

XSEED isn’t refusing to localize fanservice games, they just have to be good games too.

  • gquain
    • leingod

I do like butts too, though. These girls lack a bit in the DATASS department.

      • Anesia Hunter

Not Haruka and Hibari though. Could someone please provide the example proving this again? (Hint: SKB Opening.)

        • leingod

The one where they “clash” their butts? :P

          • Anesia Hunter

            that’s the one.

  • Learii

ofcourse everyone like boobs oh and more skin if you know what I mean

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    My idol…..

  • http://sevryanbadiong.wordpress.com/ SevPOOTS

LOL Me no likey boobs. I want male nudity too in my games XD

    • Michael Richardson

Deep Crimson has a playable male character. I’m curious how risque his transformation and clothing destruction animations will be.

      • http://sevryanbadiong.wordpress.com/ SevPOOTS

As long as they show it to he fullest :D Not like in DMC where the pizza was destroying the fun ;)

  • Kornelious

“Everyone must like boobs. Boobs go beyond words,” By glob this is THE MOST true phrase anyone has EVER uttered! XD

it’s good to see that the original Japanese producer actually WANTS to see his franchise hit the western market’s soon, that’s a pretty good producer right there! :D You heard the man XSeed, hop to it! XD

  • Aristides

Japan needs to realize they hold the key to world peace and put it into practice. Everyone needs to understand that oppai is the solution to all problems, I’m glad that someone in management position gets it.

  • Raging Rasta

    WE ALL LOVE YOU, TAKAKI!!

  • Greg

“Everyone must like boobs. Boobs go beyond words,” Takaki says with a laugh.

This man just earned my respect on a whole new level.

  • Naomi Kurohana

It would be great if we could get this soon. Xseed did state that Senran Kagura will be their only fanservice franchise. I’ll be waiting…

  • Dee Ealey

hope we get this soon. its 1 of my fav series. btw. cant wait for shinovi Vs. ^_^

  • Doctor Nebula

The games are pretty fun though. The story is decent enough, and I’ve come to like the characters. Will happily pay for more.

  • HarakiriKami

I cant wait for you to play senran kagura 2 and you repent for not realizing takaki’s true nature and his devotion to true brawling action

  • Renaldi Saputra

    People play mostly for:
    1. Boobs fanservice
    2. Fun brawling
    3. Seeking for new waifu

I can’t disagree with you, you got a point there

  • Alicemagic

With this kind of series, you’d think the most common display of bias would be the assumption that, since it has tits or panders to my preferences, it’s gotta be great.

But nope, it’s the assumption that, since it has tits or doesn’t pander to my preferences, it’s gotta be for suckers.

Misguided as both are, I’ll give the former credit for not being fueled by a vendetta against the CONSUMERS sooner than the actual product.

  • leingod

I may have agreed with your reasoning, but the SK games themselves are pretty fun to play. Fanservice is just icing on the cake.

  • Michael Richardson

The gameplay IS fun, though. If you’re too upright to enjoy a good brawler because it has cartoon boobs in it, then you’re the real sucker.

  • Zero_Destiny

Okay, this is blatant trolling if I ever saw it.

You don’t need to like the game, or even respect what they are doing, I know I don’t personally really care about any of these titles ether way you slice it. But calling everyone here an idiot, dropping f-bombs about the developer, and just out right dismissing everything is ludicrous. Have some respect for others, this isn’t 3rd grade anymore. You’re warned now.

  • HarakiriKami

…. You seem like a such a sad person.
    Have a lolipop

  • Renaldi Saputra

calm down bro, it’s reasonable for doing business in Japan like that. People are demanding that kind of game, even though I still see SK is somehow better than any similar fanservice games

  • Death Metal

You have to be a really bitter person to see it with such a serious tone. I bet the “sexless people” you refer to enjoy life and its offerings much, much more than you do.

  • leingod

I don’t get the excessive hate. Did he have his way with your sister or something? I mean, dude. Chillax.

  • Shippoyasha

Are you reading any of that guy’s posts? It’s just one inflammatory shit flinging after the next. Don’t validate him.

  • Renaldi Saputra

but I think he got a point there, just a bit

  • Shippoyasha

Well, I for one bought the games because they’re fun and well made to boot. And there’s nothing wrong with buying a game if it looks like it’ll be cute as well.

Calling out the fanbase is just uncalled for. Especially since there’s a clear bias against these kinds of games there.

  • Nazoc

Sorry, I’ll be whiling away the time playing better brawlers like Metal Gear Rising on my PC.

  • HarakiriKami

    That’s not a brawler.

    That’s a Character Action game.

A brawler is Dragon’s Crown, Senran Kagura, Viewtiful Joe, Final Fight, Double Dragon.

A 3D brawler is the genre most licensed animated games end up being. ( Benten, That young justice game ect)

  • HarakiriKami

being able to turn it off is just further icing.

  • leingod

Sure, if that’s the way you roll…
