Pokkén Tournament Will Focus More On The Action Aspect Of Fighting Games

By Sato . August 26, 2014 . 7:19am

The Pokémon Company announced a collaboration with Bandai Namco this morning, in the form of Pokkén Tournament, a fighting game being created for arcades. Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada, SoulCalibur producer Masaaki Hoshino, and The Pokémon Company CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara discussed the game on a livestream following the announcement.

Harada says he wants Pokkén Tournament to be a game that can be enjoyed by both casual and hardcore fans of Pokémon and fighting games, but most of all, he wants it to be a game that feels great to play.

According to Harada, the game doesn’t use Tekken’s engine, and is something completely new. It won’t focus as much on the fighting game genre’s technical aspects, and will be mainly about the action.

There won’t be any Tekken characters appearing either, so you won’t have to worry about Jack popping in to fight Pokémon.

Meanwhile, SoulCalibur producer Hoshino says that has always been a big fan of Pokémon. Harada explained that Hoshino is always challenging others to the Pokémon card game. Hoshino was even carrying cards in his pocket during the stream.

According to Ishihara, when he knew that they were working with Bandai Namco, he felt that if they were going to make something with them, it would definitely have to be a fighting action game, so he created the presentation for Pokkén Tournament and brought it over.

As far as the title “Pokkén Tournament” is concerned, Ishihara says he felt that another title wouldn’t have been acceptable for the game, as Pokkén Tournament represents a collaboration between the two companies. The idea came from brainstorming a different way for fans to enjoy Pokémon.

When asked why they chose arcades to release the game, Ishihara stated that while they already have Pokémon games on arcades, this would be another way to get new fans to enjoy Pokémon, and it’s something he’s always wanted to see happen.

As an aside, Ishihara said that the game would be released “first on arcades,” then went, “Oops, I said first” with a chuckle, so there’s a little sign that we could possibly see a console version in the future.

The developer also had a little Pokémon X and Y battle between team Bandai Namco’s Hoshino and Harada versus a team of voice actors, who were invited as guests to share their experiences with Pokémon. While it was well-fought battle, team voice actors ended up edging out the two producers in the end.

Harada also announced the official Twitter account for Pokkén Tournament, and urged fans to tweet what new Pokémon they’d like to see, as there’s still a ways to go until the game’s roster is complete.

Pokkén Tournament is currently in development for arcades, and will be released sometime in 2015 in Japan.

It still bothers me that Pikachu is upside down when you look at the open 3DS.

    • Jero

Well the 3ds is yours and when it’s open you don’t see the back, so it makes sense to put pikachu like that, I think all the special 3ds are that way.

    • Quan Chi

And if you had it your way, and it was closed, it would still be upside down. Now you can’t unsee it. You’re welcome :)

      • axemtitanium

I realize that. However, when it’s open, you’re not seeing the back cover so it benefits other people who are looking at it. When it’s closed, you’re not playing anything so it doesn’t matter if it’s upside down.

The Apple logo on your laptop is right-side up when the computer is open. Why not do the same for 3DS?

        • Quan Chi

Nobody’s going to be looking at you when you play a handheld in public that is rarely played in public anyway.

And I have no logo on my laptop. I utilized the option of not having one + having carbon fiber wrap ;)

Besides, having it the way it is, just like laptops, keep you from opening it the wrong way and damaging the hinges. Who else sees the back of my laptop when I’m using it? The wall and/or the back of a chair.

          • ishyg

“Nobody’s going to be looking at you when you play a handheld in public that is rarely played in public anyway.”

            But they are in Japan.

  • David García Abril

Well, I didn’t see this one coming, that’s for sure…

  • DudeJericho

I think they made the right decision not going with the Tekken engine. Tekken is a really hardcore fighting game series which is difficult to get into initially, so I’d imagine things going downhill fast if they tried to incorperate that level of complexity into this game.
I’ll most likely be able to play this when I go to Japan next year ^^

    • HarakiriKami

      Tekken’s not really that complex

      • DudeJericho

I mean that there is a lot to take in and it certainly isn’t for the casual.

        • HarakiriKami

          whats a casual

      • Shade DMessiah

It is if you play competitively. That’s his point. Let’s say they make this game like tekken. Tekken players go online and thrash everyone else because they get what little complexity (by your words anyway) has and makes it that much harder for casuals to enjoy it.

        • HarakiriKami

Ha that’s why casuals hate melee.

Its too hard to get into competitively and the game’s physics and gravity are too oppressive.

          • DudeJericho

I suck at fighting games in general, even after weeks/months of pratice, but I still play them because I enjoy them. I just hope to hold my own in this one.

  • Tonton Ramos

Nintendo x Platinum Games = Bayonetta 2 and Wonderful 101
Nintendo x SEGA = Sonic Lost World and Boom
Nintendo x Tecmo Koei = Hyrule Warriors and Fatal Frame
Nintendo + Atlus = Fire Emblem X Shin Megami Tensei
Nintendo + Bandai Namco = Pokken Tournament
Nintendo + Capcom + Sega x Bandai Namco = Super Smash Bros 4

    • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Hey man, if developers refuse to make games for your console might as well recruit them for the series they don’t get.

    • SupaPhly

you forgot wonderful 101 as part of platinum games

    • J_Joestar

wonder if they’d ever be able to get a collab with a western dev?

      • ForteWily

Given the still sour reception in the US and the UK…. I would not hold your breath for that.

That said… I would be curious what comes from that, depending on the company.

    • pokeroi

I think the only role of Capcom and Sega is providing a character, nothing else..

    • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

Can’t wait for new collaboration between Ninty and S-E here.

New Dissidia or new type of Jrpg guys?^_^

      • Mastery

        Dissidia: Nintendo? I’d play it.

        • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

Me too lol. Sadly S-E is not really interested in conventional gaming platform anymore here.T_T

      • Namuro

        There’s Final Fantasy Explorers, remember?

Unless it has to be a completely new I.P., or have Nintendo stuff in it.

        I would love a Nintendo all-stars RPG!

      • MogMoogle

        Super Mario RPG 2!!!

      • exrazer

        I’ve never played dissdia..

    • ForteWily

Last that I checked… Tekken Tag Tournament 2 did grace the Wii U.

      • triablos

It also came out on Xbox and ps3. His list is of exclusives.

  • FivePointedTheStar

“Harada also announced the official Twitter account for Pokkén Tournament,

    Hmmmm, how interesting.

    • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

      Put Eevee inside lol.^_^

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

I would love to see Pokken come to Wii U.

  • AceEsper

Here I am talking to a friend about the PS4 needing an exclusive fighter and then this shows up. This looks fun!

  • Rasputing

And here I thought nothing would ever come of that trademark. So hyped!

  • Yan Zhao

This game definitely works better with Soul Calibur’s engine since it allows room for some flashy stuff/projectiles are part of the core gameplay.

    • NintendoPSXTheSecond

The only projectiles in Soul Calibur are the guns that take an absurd charge time and shoot fast.

      • James Robert Thompson

        Viola says hi.
So does Link with his bombs.

I don’t play enough Soul Calibur to remember anyone else, but I’m pretty sure they’re there.

  • Grape Monet

Why even bother releasing an English-language trailer if the game wasn’t planned for a console release. No way are we getting the arcade version. Either they’re lying and there’s definitely a Wii U release planned, or they’re really unsure about bringing the game to consoles (and thus, overseas) and this trailer was made to gauge fan interest.

    • pokeroi

Nodoby is lying. “As an aside, Ishihara said that the game would be released “first on arcades,” then went, “Oops, I said first” with a chuckle, so there’s a little sign that we could possibly see a console version in the future.”
      They just didn’t say it.

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

      Best to wait til E3

  • Vesperion

I guess we know why we haven’t heard about Tekken X Street Fighter now

    • exrazer

  • Mastery

    “Won’t be any Tekken Characters”

Not even in the story? I was kind of hoping for an AU where Tekken characters are Pokemon trainers.

  • Mastery

Also, guess size won’t be much of an issue, considering Lucario and Machamp were the same height, whereas in the original games, Lucario is 4 feet and Machamp is 5. Then again, could be a tall Lucario or a short Machamp.

    • Misty Dawson

      Lucario was definitely shorter

  • Ciaran Doherty

Here are the Characters I wish to see appear :], ahem:
    Lucario. (Confirmed.).

    • HarakiriKami

      Spinda isnt on this list.

      Neither is Mienshiao or Bisharp.

      Or Scrafty or Pangoro.

Yo man you need to get real

      Also where is loppuny

    • Missingno

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      you forgot Sceptile

      • Ciaran Doherty

Nah, aside from Pikachu and Eevee, only one Character each will appear, just one each and not their other evolved forms.

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

          but leaf blade dragon

        • exrazer

Thats pretty hypocritical as you have both gallade and gardevoir.

          • Ciaran Doherty

Male and Female variants of the same character I thought.

          • exrazer

How could you consider them just variants? They’re separate evolutions with separate fighting styles.

    • Swap Mewtwo for his X version. Add Ursaring, Hitmontop, Granbull, Wobbuffet, Smeargle, Hariyama, Mega Medicham, Weavile, Simiage, Electrivie.. I have more but I’m lazy.

    • J_Joestar

      no Pangoro?

    • exrazer

      Blaziken confirmed

      • Ciaran Doherty

        Kool :].

  • Namuro

    That “Oops”. LOL

Of course, we know that it’s coming later to mobi… Oops.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

wobbuffet is the training mode test dummy

    • Hagaren

While that makes sense, I’d like it more if I could punch Mr. Mime in the face. =P

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

you don’t know how much I want that

    • DarkRoxas

They should use the Substitute doll xD

    • AuraGuyChris

Everyone would DIE before they even got to the first match…

  • Ditto is most likely the Mokujin of this game.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

    • Eder García

“Ditto is most likely the Shang Tsung of this game”

      • popo123

Well it’s from the Tekken creators and Mokujin is pretty much the Ditto of their series.

      • No, that’s Smeargle. Who steals the moves of every other Pokemon to himself.

  • Why Pokken though? sounds like a Ripoff game of Pokemon

    • DyLaN

I think its a combination of Pocket (Monsters) and Tekken.

      • I also noticed that. Still it would be hard searching for gameplay vids. “pokemon fighting game” where it should be POKKEN

        • exrazer

That was sarcasm. The play on words is extremely obvious.

    • Kristoffer Brandberg

Pokken is a combination with the name Pokemon and the Japanese word “Ken,” meaning “fist.”

      • Pocket Fist?

        • James Robert Thompson

Sounds like a very different type of game…

          • jsecula

some people charge good money for a pocket fisting.

  • Anyone upset it isn’t the Pikachu detective game?

  • Quan Chi

Ppl are going to buy this and not play it xD

  • Kristoffer Brandberg

I’d guess that Mewtwo would be the final boss in that game.

  • FivePointedTheStar

More importantly, what town is that? Windmills in the background hmm… Florama Town?

  • Sperium3000

It would be incredibly stupid if they didn’t realese this on Wii U eventually. You can quote me on this, the arcade release is for fine-tuning. There will be an International Wii U release with cool new shit at some point.

  • subsamuel01

Man I wish this comes to the Wii U.

  • ronin4life

I wonder how big the roster will be…

And in what ways it will be limited.

And if you can transfer your own pokemon like in Pokemon Stadium.

  • I hope its only fighting type pokemon in this game. BRING ON THE HITMON FAMILY

    • James Robert Thompson

I wouldn’t mind non-fighting types if their mega-evos are fighting. Lopunny would be pretty fun I think, but I mainly say this for the purposes of having Mewtwo as the final boss Nu-13 style.

      • doubleO7

I don’t see why they have to be related to fighting types. I think there are a lot of non-fighting types that could still work in a fighting game. Mewtwo being the big one. Others like Zoroark, Kabutops, Electabuzz, or Feraligator wouldn’t be too… farfetch’d either XD

        • PreyMantis

Mewtwo would kill most of them if most the monsters are fighting types.

EDIT: It’s a joke among those who knows the main Pokemon RPGs, in case you didn’t know.

          • micsoundersxiii

I doubt they’d add them in this game since there are still fighting/psychic types after all, why give them an unfair advantage?

          • PreyMantis

It’s a most possibility that they’ll just remove the typing because it would create a huge unbalance. If so, in the trailer, Lucario would have been beaten easily by Machamp because of Lucario’s typing disadvantage which makes the Pokemon weak to fighting Pokemon like Machamp. Hopefully, we get more than just fighting types.

          • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Are you mental? If that’s the case, Machamp would have murdered Lucario because he’s part Steel type. There’s obviously no type advantages.

          • PreyMantis

Obviously. I was jokingly referencing the mainline RPG games. I should labeled that as a sarcasm since none of you get it.

    • exrazer

I want alakazam so i can unleash the power of the spoons.

  • The endless trolling of Magikarp begins anew.

    • Land of Green Pasture

yeah.. remember those days when 100 splash = instant kill? I don’t, but I’d like to see…

  • Kaihedgie

    So it begins

  • SetzerGabbiani

“Harada also announced the official Twitter account for Pokkén Tournament, and urged fans to tweet what new Pokémon they’d like to see”

    Amazed Twitter hasn’t crashed already.

    • ForteWily

Give it time… A fail whale will appear.

  • Snorlaxation

I vote that Jigglypuff’s SSB Rest attack be included!

  • Afternoon Intergalactic

“It won’t focus as much on the fighting game genre’s technical aspects, and will be mainly about the action.”

A bit concerning, but hopefully the game will still be deep enough to have a competitive scene.

    • Tre W

I wouldn’t worry so much. This is the same kind of stuff that ASW spouted about P4U/P4A, which was also a game that was simplified to reel in a larger crowd, but is nonetheless a comp-worthy game.

      • Jiff

No matter how simple the game, there will always be a competitive scene for it.

I’m looking at you smash Bros.

      • Afternoon Intergalactic

I don’t remember ASW saying that they weren’t focusing on the game’s technical aspects, but rather that they also wanted to make the game accessible to newer players. I also wouldn’t say that they simplified the game, just gave newcomers some tools to get acclimated (autocombo) that didn’t take away from higher level play.

But you’re right, Smash probably takes the same “more focus on action over technical mechanics” philosophy and has a huge competitive following, so I’m optimistic.

      • Shippoyasha

To be fair, the whole ‘action oriented’ element is a buzzword for ‘casual friendly’ in Japan. They specifically mention the competitive elements to appease core fighting game crowds.

They did the same for JoJo Allstar game and for Naruto. And they said they wanted to go back to being more competition worthy next.

I hope this game is deep enough, otherwise it may not really justify a 1 vs 1 fighting setting for gamers who want more meat out of their combat.

    • subsamuel01

I think Naruto Storm games are the best to compare with the direction of this game.

    • Estrius Alstar

Fighting game has lost its meaning these days. It will probably more akin of Budokai Tenkaichi and Gundam VS games rather than a real fighting game.

  • charles

It would’ve been better if made like the J Stars victory vs game.

i mean look at this, compared to tekken.

    • 하세요

This game was fun for a whole two weeks. Sold it to a friend after that. Games like this are visually appealing, that’s it.

    • exrazer

Quality of the game over Quality of graphics.

    • subsamuel01

J-Stars gets boring fast, rather they go for gameplay rather than graphics.

  • Kai2591

But will it include flying and non-humanoid pokemon?

    • BalmungX

I expect so,i would like to see Sylveon or a Gogoat, maybe even a salamence , metagross or a samurott

      • Kai2591

        me want Metagross~

    • 하세요

I don’t see a bird being too interesting in this, but I’d say anything with at least hands and/or feet could be viable, preferably both.

      • Fighting types are weak against flying types, remember? The most likely flying type we’ll get is Hawlucha and maybe if we’re lucky, Charizard.

        • Kai2591

          Good point.

        • 하세요

Hawlucha better freakin’ make it. His whole design is based off of a damn luchador.

I’ve had enough Charizard for one year. X/Y, special anime, and Smash Bros. Let the poor thing rest.

    • decus

I can’t think of a single fighting game that mostly airborne characters in with ground characters that wasn’t broken in favor of or against the flying guy.

It just doesn’t work, but stuff more like Hawlucha and Charizard getting interesting aerials isn’t out of the question; you just wouldn’t want a mostly airborne guy in like Staraptor.

      • Asura

Charizard’s Seismic Toss from the anime would work wonders in this game.

  • Rick Hawkins

Hopefully the entire Hitmon line is included.

  • ndjn3979

    wtf lol

  • Weeb

Fingers crossed for Primeape and Feraligatr.

    • If you stare into it’s eyes… it. will. chase. you. for. e. ver!

  • AuraGuyChris

Let me guess. Mega Evolutions are OP in this game by default.

  • Seth Rich

Just get Primeape in there…..And Scizor…..And the other forty or so I’m thinking of. And Just make sure you don’t give Pinsir any fatality moves….. And put in stage hazards like a Gyarados that attacks from the sea in the background….And gimme that Vaporeon plush in the last pic. I want that thing.

  • Nice Boat Quatro

  • exrazer

I just want to be able to customize my pokemon, so I can have blade wielding Lucario with a seviper tail , and charizard’s wings.

  • I really hope this game has more than just the “badass” Pokémon. I want to play as the cute ones too. Heck, this game should just have every Pokémon.

    • Princess_Eevee9

While I agree that this should happen. Making a game with all 721 Current Dex Pokemon would be a developers nightmare. I say for every type barring Fighting-types we should do a survey that picks out the top 3-5 Pokemon to be in.

    • Odds are, they’ll be going for the ones that make sense for a fighting game. It’s not the “baddass” ones, because it’s likely more exclusive than that. I imagine they’ll need to have the fighting type though, since this seems to be a fighting type tournament (thematically at least). I imagine the requirement simply is “Final Evo, Has fighting type”.

      • micsoundersxiii

Not all pokemon that fight are fighting types though. There’s Normals like Ursaring that primarily use close combat attacks. Normal attacks, for the most part, are almost all physical attacks as well.

    • chris

Apart from been too many Pokemon to put in, not every Pokemon would be suitable, eg Magikarp.

  • E.T.993

    Wii U, please?

    • AuraGuyChris

Honestly, I don’t see this high-def game going to the 3DS. Wii U is a given.

    • I think it’s for ps4

  • AndyLC

    Take the chance

  • Jin Kisaragi

PETA is going to be all over this calling it animal cruelty.

  • Velen (Not WoW)

I have one thing to say to all you fighting game buffs:

Don’t compare it to Tekken. Don’t compare it to Soul Calibur. Don’t compare it to the mainstream fighting games.

For the love of god: let it be it’s own thing.

Secondly: A game being friendly to new players should never be considered a bad thing. Cause it means more people in your scene to play with.

    • 3PointDecoupage

If Tekken and Soul Calibur dont get to be their own things why should this?

      • Velen (Not WoW)

Cause if you had bothered to read you would realize Pokken Tournament is going to be using a new engine completely and not Tekken’s for one. For two, because Tekken and Soul Calibur are their own things. Their own spin on the fighting genre. Why should Pokken Tournament not be given the same benefit?

        • Renzo-senpai

I think this is pretty much the result of what Namco Bandai came up with after experimenting with TxSF except with more freedom.

For example: In one interview they said they had a hard time implementing jump-ins in the game to accommodate for SF characters, which is a bit unbelievable considering since Tekken is known to portray fights as real as possible. But since this is pokemon, it is more forgiving.

    • Just Tim

While you’re at it, please remind the American FGC that SSB is NOT a fighting game by the most traditional meaning of the term.

      • Velen (Not WoW)

I think you fundamentally misunderstood my meaning: I meant judge the game on it’s own merits instead of those of others.

    • Sad thing is that fighting games are set in such “playstyles” and button imputs that once it releases and we see what we ourselves have to DO to play/WIN is when we’ll see what game(s) it will inevitably compare it to.

There’s a reason why fighting games like Primal Rage as one example as well as others with “different” button inputs don’t become franchises and are instead 1-2 trick ponies.

It’s either HCF a-la Street Fighter (now being ‘calculator/numpad input thx to GG/BB.)

Which brings me to that series, Blaz Blue inputs which still mimic SF to an extent but the drive button,air-cancels, etc. mixes it up just enough to stand alone.

MvC3, a series that everyone knows thanks in part to the second game. Third game is pretty good too.

Soul Calibur which… is out there I guess, but I don’t hear it talked about much (either that or im under a very specific rock for me not to hear much about it O_o)

Tekken and its sequels (which I don’t know much about since I dont personally like the way it’s played, so I don’t play it)

ANd finally, although I havn’t see much talk about it yet, The new Killer Instinct with it’s auto-second feature that’s been in use since the first game.

I may have missed a few but if they’re making a fighting game… it’s either going to take a bit from an already established fighting mechanic as mentioned above or try something completely different/new that may either catch on BIG or not at all, like Smash Bros. a “Button Masher” (ok, TIMED button mashing that actually encourages skill and precision, props for that 1) that became a fighting game in it’s own league that Onimusha Blade Warriors tried to replicate but did so, very poorly… and don’t even get me started on that PS all stars game that no one talks about… A noble attempt by Sony, but ultimately didn’t pay off for them. A box full of them for 9 bucks each in a bargain bin at Best Buy was proof enough of that for me.

SO let’s see which side of the dice this game falls into. :O

    • Asura

The Tekken comparison is right in the name.

  • 3PointDecoupage

I was hoping it would ONLY have fighting type pokemon like in that one episode but I guess not…

    • PErhaps every Pokemon that has arms and legs? Or anyone that fits. Bisharp will fit, Kabutops will, but I doubt Ratata or Goldeen will make the cut, even Pikachu.

  • RunningWild1984

    Please let there be Stunfisk

    • 3PointDecoupage

Like they wouldnt include stunfisk. It would be commercial suicide!

  • Raiyo

I just hope they give the included pokemon a memory boost so they can use more then 4 attacks. ;P

  • Joseph

Bisharp has to been in this. and kabutops

  • Koibito888

Focusing more on the action than the technical aspect. Factually how every fighter, at least fighter based on a fandom, should be made.

  • Just Tim

Watch, as I get proven correct about the following:

    –Sky Uppercut = Shoryuken
    –Low Kick = footsies/Hurricane Kick
    –Aura Sphere = Hadouken

  • Fate

hmm, that camera angle suggests this will be more Gundam VS Gundam inspiration.

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

    Pokémon aren’t meant to fight…not like this…

    If I may:
    Pokemon, Pokemon, Pokemon;
    Let’s do it.
I wanna be the very best,
    Like no one ever was.
To fight them is my real test,
To beat them is my cause.
My whole life has lead to this,
    Time to test my skills.
    I know, I just can’t miss!
    Gonna show the world…
Born to be a winner, (Pokken!)
    Born to be a champion!
    Born to be a winner,
Born to be the very best! (Pokken Tournament!)
    Born to be a winner!

I kinda hope for Scyther- it was an old favorite of mine, won me many a fight. And if not Scyther, at least one of the Hitmon…mons.
