Phantom Of The Kill Looks Like A Gorgeous Fire Emblem-Style Tactics Game

By Eugene . August 30, 2014 . 9:28am

Gumi Games and Fuji have begun pre-registration for their new tactical simulation mobile game Phantom of the Kill.

Details on the game are scant, but a glance at this full 3D game can’t help but bring to mind comparisons with Fire Emblem. Though I hasten to add there’s no word on perma-death.

The website also has a pretty badass rocking BGM and anime background.

Phantom of the Kill is planned for an iOS and Android release.

eh.. it actually looks pretty decent… hope the dev went out of the nest by releasing it on another platform tho…

  • samsneeze

You know, there’s a difference between “looks like” and “rips off”, right?

    • AkuLord3

Nothin wrong with that if its fun

  • ReidHershel

“Looks like” is kind of spreading it thin don’t you believe?

  • Jiff

It looks like Jeanne d’Arc and I really hope that it plays similarly. That was one of the best and most under rated PSP SRPG. Too bad this looks more about Cliche anime tropes and less about French Conquest.

    • Pyrotek85

I enjoyed that game a lot more than I expected to, got to be pretty challenging too.

    • hofreith

Completely agree! Jeanne d’Arc is such a lovely crafted and colourful game that does a lot right.

    • awat

i agree, Jeanne d’arc was one of my most fave rpg on the psp :)

  • Suicunesol

Looks like it’s Fire Emblem with just waifus. How silly. Not like there’s an audience for that kind of game…. :P

I find it interesting how many similarities there are between the logo and FE:A’s Japanese logo. There’s even a little monologue underneath, “Princesses, Imitations of the “Killers”, they share the same blood, several thousand souls, several thousand bodies, all sharing the same heart.”

But it doesn’t look bad for a phone game.

  • machomuu

This seems to be a product of the mentality that comes with the games not being available on mobile. The poor man’s Fire Emblem, basically. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be bad, though.

    • Afternoon Intergalactic

You can play them on a mobile device with a little creativity, lol. Not really as accessible as a mobile app though, or as legal.

  • aoihana

It doesn’t look too bad, I think!

I like the artwork, and the characters look interesting, too. I don’t particularly like SRPG’s, but like I said, it doesn’t look bad, so it’s worth checking out.

  • fyi1191

    How’s their feet?

    • No feet.

      • Linhua

        … Kupo.

        … sorry I keep doing that… = =;; … I can’t help it…

        • That’s racist, kupo. Don’t expect us to always end our sentences with that word, kupo!

  • Kaetsu

This actually looks pretty good although I presume there’s no word on a western release.

  • chroma816

I’m a sucker for cute anime girls and SRPGs, so I hope this gets a western release.

  • PotatoPower

so, its fe:a with a different art style. ok

  • NeptuniasBeard

    But does it have waifus?

  • Looks like? This is a blatant rip off.

  • pokeroi

Style, Colors, UI, font…..yep it is a rip off

  • thrak

All-girl games where men seem to be nonexistent race is everyday reality now.

    • thrak

Just don’t get me wrong, people. This is NOT the kind of reality I wanted *Sees likes multiply like rabbits* I am so happy I am not the only one who thinks so!

  • ShootThatWay

Is siliconera taking this off Steparu? Just wondering since Steparu had news for this 5 days ago.

  • danved

Why do otaku-centric things keep putting ‘KILL’ in the title all of a sudden? It’s kind of annoying.

    • Afternoon Intergalactic

      la kill

  • Jettythesunfish

    Time to tip the scales!

    ..Oh wait.

  • Oversoul

One of the reasons why FE was great was that the women weren’t dressed like whores. The series actually had integrity.
Awakening kind of ruined that, but nowhere near as much as this game. “hurrr durr let’s just plaster tits and thongs all over the fire emblem engine”
and it’ll probably sell because anime fans are degenerate morons

    • Don’t take FE-style to mean others have to copy everything the franchise does. Although this one is really pushing it.

Stop being such a SJW and judging other people by your standards, and also being rude.

    • What the ?! FE women were now where near this game design.

    • AkuLord3

Because for some reason people think that people who like anime are morons and that those people enjoy whore looking character even though bunch of characters prove that wrong…you’re an idiot. There’s opinons and then there’s being BIG IDIOT.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Really really? Take that anger and namecalling somewhere else.

    • Kaetsu

Why are you getting mad for no reason? This isn’t the next entry in the Fire Emblem series so why do you care?

  • Oversoul

I am slightly irritated that every single-player JPRG to come out besides bravely in the last like 5 years has been “kawaii waifu simulator 9000” or a bad FF13/Tales spinoff. I realize that the genre will never be in the Suikoden/Wild Arms/Front Mission/Shadow Hearts era of solid writing, art direction and mechanics ever again, but this is pathetic. And the genre is now like this because it’s what people buy. Garbage like Atelier X and Neptunia. I weep for another radiant historia or something

    • Nee Nee

Huh. Hate on Atelier and Neptunia. Aren’t you original ;)

      • Oversoul

I played Atelier Iris and Mana Khemia. They were great, solid RPGs. i guess they realized you don’t need to be good, you just need the waifus

        • M’iau M’iaut

Enough. Mana khemia has relationship building and waifu determing as acore gameplay element. The series has never skimped on the moe

Nome of the series is what this topic is about.

    • Landale

That’s all you see because that’s all you want to see. Of course, when your view of what constitutes garbage is given such a vague definition it’s easy enough to just move it around and apply it to everything you simply don’t like.

      • Oversoul

I’m pretty sure if I saw JRPGs I thought were appealing, I would play them and enjoy them since I have many dozens already and have been keeping up with the genre for like 20 years. Oh and I’m also a game developer with a good understanding of why decent JRPGs barely exist anymore

I thought this shameless ripoff looked great until I got a screen-load of its generic art style women DBZ sword fighting without underwear

        • Landale

So, rather than actually explain you’re just puffing yourself up. Not a good way to prove your point, just a good way to prove you have no idea how you can actually even defend your point.

          • Oversoul

Uh, your point was that I have some sort of stupidity haze that prevents me from seeing things that I’d like or something. I’m not sure what /your/ point is here, unless you want me to write a critical analysis of the entire genre and for some reason thoroughly explain why I don’t find half-naked anime girls a selling point when I purchase video games?

          • revenent hell

Just because there are half naked anime girls in a game doesn’t auto equate it as “crap”.

Sure that may be a reason why you might not become interested in said game but it doesn’t mean its a horrid JRPG/SRPG experience either. Its just a “main” reason to prevent your from trying the/a game.

You are really just lumping them all in the same category with a blanket statement without expressing the flaws you have with a certain game itself (or all the current games you have played in this category as it seems).

Stating mechanical flaws or story irregularities you find with a game in particular would help people see your way instead of just throwing them all in a pile and calling it a day.

          • Oversoul

/Just because there are half naked anime girls in a game doesn’t auto equate it as “crap”./

I disagree. When your game’s main selling point is “look at these impractically dressed anime girls”, that tells me two things:
            1. This game has no coherent world building and the setting where I will be spending time had minimal thought put into it
            2. This game has no grounding in reality and the problems these characters face, and the conflicts at large, are just there because the genre demands it

Is it possible for a game with bad art to be good? Sure. Mana Khemia’s ridiculously pink art really threw me at first, but it sold me on its complex systems and how it tied the academy setting into the game-play. And the writing was good and fun too.

show me a game where slutty idols have to combat evil sound monsters and i’m sold, but in an ideal world I would like my fantasy games’ art and setting to attempt originality, since that’s over half of what the game is. man, Radiant Historia was good.

          • revenent hell

“1. This game has no coherent world building and the setting where I will be spending time had minimal thought put into it”

That’s far from true. Half naked girls in a game is just an alternate selling point and mostly not a terrible one to me because I like pretty things. Whorish or not. That again is not a reason to equate a game as trash, you just do so because that’s what it “tells” you but again it doesn’t make it so.

Even the Neptunia games, while I can nitpick myself, actually have some pretty decent gameplay and is the sole reason I enjoy them pretty much.

Its quite a bit in ignorance to just say because there are scantily clad girls in a game its bad without even trying it and making claims about it that you know nothing about.

Sure, say you wont try out the games for this reason of yours but you cant make any other claim with any validity other than that unless you actually played the game.

“2. This game has no grounding in reality and the problems these characters face, and the conflicts at large, are just there because the genre demands it”

This is any and every game ever created.

They are fantasy , personally, I could care less if they are grounded in reality or not as long as the story is consistent for the world it is in.

If I wanted to deal with reality in games I would go outside and play sports or chat with others. I get enough reality in a day, I don’t require overmuch of it in a game I play for amusement.

          • Oversoul

I’m not sure if you understood a single thing about my post
            to reiterate:
“i care about the art style and world that these games take place in. warriors being dressed like Jpop idols leads me to believe the writing here took a backseat to marketing.”
“i want characters that are written well. and to be written well, they have to be human and face real situations. the game looking dumb makes me think the writing took a backseat because they knew people would buy the game for the tits”

    • Etrian????? Ni no Kuni?????? Valkyria?????

      • Oversoul

was never a fan of Etrian
Ni no Kuni was too basic
Valkyria came out a long time ago, and we never got VC3 anyways.

        • Landale

“Was never a fan”. Does not equate to something being bad, nor even “kawaii waifu simulator 9000”.
“Too basic”. Does not equate to something being bad, nor even “kawaii waifu simulator 9000”
“We never got _ anyway”. Does not equate to something being bad, nor even “kawaii waifu simulator 9000”. Also this is an article about a Japanese release, dismissing something in comparison that is also just a Japanese release is illogical.

As I stated earlier, your standard for “garbage” is so vague you can just freely move it about. And well, you’ve proved me right. All you’re doing is moving goalposts on proof that not everything within the last few years has been bad. Unless you are actually willing to have a discussion here, and not just this rampant denial and bitching, we’re done here. Not only is this largely irrelevant, you’re not even willing to properly discuss what you’re trying to bring up.

Don’t continue to derail this with this crap, and this order applies to the people taking Oversoul’s bait as well.

    • Kaetsu

There have been tons of fantastic JRPGs to come out in the past 5 years so I’m not sure what you’re talking about.

      • Oversoul

        examples plx

        • Serge

Xenoblade, Solatorobo, Shin Megami Tensei 4, Birth by Sleep, Radiant historia, Crisis Core, Persona 3 Portable, Brave Story: NT, Trails in the Sky, Ys 7, Ys Celceta, Final Fantasy Tactics A2, Devil Survivor I & II, Shin Megami Tensei: Stange Journey, Etrian Odyssey I, II & III, The World Ends With You, Suikoden Teirkreis…

          • Oversoul

More than half of the games Serge mentioned are from the age where the DS/PSP was relevant, and yes i’m totes aware there were good RPGs there. hell, TWEWY is from ’06 dude

but yes I’m sure newer SMT, Bravely and Mistwalker games are dandy, but it’s slim pickings imo

          • Serge

            But we (US) got TWEWY in 2008 ;A;

        • revenent hell

Devil Summoner. SMT IV, Mind Zero, Fire Emblem Awakening, Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, Pandora’s Tower, Bravely Default, Ragnarok Odyssey, Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, Class of Hero’s….
And these aren’t even a eye drop full of the ones I have bought in the past five years. And while all have their ups and downs I have found all quite enjoyable.
I’m sure you can nit pick all to death I have no doubt, but predominantly I found these games very worthy of their value.

  • I’ll be interested in it if it comes out over here. I love games that satisfy a FE/Disgaea/SRPG itch.

  • If the BGM is amazing, I might even pick this up.
Part of why I consider the Fire Emblem series to be some of the best SRPGs ever made is because of the music.
Go to Serenes Forest if you don’t know what I mean.

  • Jadfish

It looks really cool and I am interested in it, but for gods sake won’t someone PLEASE google your game title before you decide on it!?
Okay you know what scratch that, it’s part of the charm. All You Need Is Kill is a fantastic book and it wouldn’t have been the same if it was named Edge of Tomorrow (despite that being a way more fitting name)

  • awat

i hope we get this ,looks pretty good
