More King Of Fighters Coming To Steam This Year, Athena Asamiya RPG In Early 2015

By Spencer . September 11, 2014 . 12:37am

image It’s official, SNK Playmore is bringing The King of Fighters ’98 Ultimate Match and The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match to Steam. The King of Fighters ’98 Ultimate Match is scheduled to come out sometime in November followed by KOF 2002 Unlimited Match in December.

Before both of those King of Fighters titles, Metal Slug X will have its Steam debut on October 3. Also Metal Slug 3 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita is slated for release this winter.

It looks like most of SNK Playmore’s new games are being made for smartphones. They have an Athena Asamiya RPG slated for release on iOS and Android in early 2015. Two more RPGs, Great Adventure! Sister Quest and Monster King, are also scheduled for early 2015. Beast Busters featuring KOF, an action shooting game, is set for November 2014.

Getting all of them. My laptop is such a good old school machine by now.

  • Nicholas Perry

Hopefully they update emulator from MS3 and re-import that into MS3 itself.

As it is, it’s a fair bit worse than unofficial emulation. Pretty horrible sound emulation, no way to set volume levels, microstuttering, etc.

  • scdk

It’d be pretty neato if they made the Athena RPG available for PS Vita too, via the Playstation Mobile store.

Also, I read “Beast Busters” as “Breast Busters, starring KOF”. Needless to say, I’m not quite as interested now.

    • leingod

I believe Sony is stopping PSM support soon. I’d love to play the Athena RPG on the Vita too :/

      • darke

They’re only stopping PSM support on smartphones; the 2.0 release will be Vita/VitaTV only.

  • leingod

Man, I love Metal Slug… but you know what would be REALLY awesome on the Vita? KOF XIII.

Also, I need to find some info on that Athena RPG.

  • CptPokerface

I really really hope ’98 and 02′ UM have solid enough netcode. They’re both great enhanced additions of their respective games. I need my girl Foxy for online matches.

I’m hoping GGPO or something like that. KOF13 on Steam is pretty solid.

      • CptPokerface

Same. I hear that a lot about KOF13 but coming from playing the awful console version online they literally couldn’t do worse.

Either ggpo or the keep improving their own.

  • z_merquise

One Neo-Geo game I so want to see released for PSN is Garou: Mark of the Wolves.

Also Beast Busters!? You mean this?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEt1n_qhijA

Really brings back memories. I was so scared of this game because of the gore and the zombies and other disturbing monsters.

But “Beast Busters featuring KOF”? So it’s gonna be like Terry Bogard Buster Wolfing those zombies?

    • D. Collins

      YES Garou all the way!

  • ギャビン

    HYPE!

    • Matty

      YES!

      I hope they’re good ports…!

  • aizen310

no Samurai Shodown = no Nakoruru = no buy

Or maybe, if the netcode is good enough. But still, I want my Nakoruru and Kibagami Genjurou awesomeness :(

    • http://k-hermann.deviantart.com/?rnrd airman4

Nakoruru was so cool with her eagle

      • aizen310

And her wolf alterego (BUST version) is such a yandere :D

  • Yan Zhao

Athena RPG? Color me intrigued. Too bad I’ll never play it cause mobile.

  • fairysun

Nice, hopefully this mark the return of one of the greatest fighting game.

Before there was even Blazblue and Guilty Gear was still in infant period.

    • aizen310

      LOL that box art :D
Kyo, Iori and Athena… so much classiness. It’s like a cover page for a Vogue issue :)

      PS:
BlazBlue and Guilty Gear still awesome, IMHO.

  • CloneCatCommander

This is probably a dumb question, but will KoF 98 have online play? I already own it on the DC, but if it has online multiplayer, I’d rebuy it.

  • Göran Isacson

As someone who’s mildly interested in the KOF series (I bought KOFXIII for Steam and like what I’ve played so far), which one of these would be the “best” title to buy? Are they different enough that purchasing both works, is one clearly superior to the other?

    • AkuLord3

Each game is fun in its own right like some fighters. 98/UM or 2002UM are considered the best because they content the all the characters from that certain saga of games. They both have a KOF gameplay but different

    • CptPokerface

There are some game play differences between the two but at their core their about the same.

They’re both worth getting for sure. 98 UM has characters from KoF 96, 97, and 98 and some extras and KoF 02 has characters from 00′, 01, and 02 and some extras.

I personally like 02′ UM more because the music is amazing, but you can’t go wrong buying them both.

    • EdgeKun

Honestly, I’d say buy both. ;P They’re both excellent, refined titles that are a great point to jump into the series on.

If I had to choose one though, I’d probably go with 2002 UM. Bigger set of characters, and probably one of the best soundtracks I’ve heard in the past decade!

    • MoriyaMug

Both are equally representative of different aspects of the series, I think. KOF2002UM had more obvious love put into it, though, with all the new stages and completely redone soundtrack.

You can’t really go wrong with either (or KOF13).

  • CartmanKusanagi

I know it doesn’t sound like a huge deal, but I hope the Steam releases have the color editor from the PS2 versions. Neither of the Xbox 360 ports have it, in fact, they sacrificed a few other things: 98UM has untranslated win quotes and lacks the arranged soundtrack as well as the 3D backgrounds. 2002UM also lacks the 3D backgrounds and the original 2002 is missing, but at least the win quotes were translated. Sadly, to play the PS2 version of 2002UM, you have to import it.

TLDR: I hope these releases are based the PS2 versions rather than the inferior 360 versions.

    • Souffrir

Highly unlikely, but I’ll add a +1 to your hopes.

  • Γεώργιος Αρχαιοκαπηλίδης

I’m pretty sure that these rpgs will be Japan only.

  • Los Illuminados

excellent news. rejoice! as this is only the beginning of more great things to come. make sure you support and buy all SNKP video game titles if you can. enjoy.

  • leingod

… and here’s my new main.

  • Haganeren

Thanks for the spoil, i hate you.

  • samsneeze

Spoilers at the top of a completely unrelated article. Way to go.
