Level-5’s Canceled PSP Horror Game Is Being Made Into A Light Novel

By Sato . September 25, 2014 . 1:26am

Long before Yo-kai Watch, Level-5 had plans for a turn-based horror RPG for PSP, called Ushiro, which was announced in 2008. There hasn’t been much said about it since its cancelation, but it looks like it’ll be back in light novel form. [Thanks, Game Jouhou.]

According to the report, the light novel version is called Ushiro: The Displeased Death God, which will be based off the canceled PSP title, and published by Kadokawa and Fields. Riu Goto will be the author while toi8 will be in charge of its illustrations.

Level-5 even had a trailer for the PSP game. You can check it out to get an idea of what it was like:

While there hasn’t been any word on reviving the title in video game form, Ushiro: The Displeased Death God’s first volume publishes today, with the second volume releasing sometime in January 2015.

Level 5 horror game, but it was cancelled? T_T

    • Anime10121

And it looked REALLY good too :(

    • E.T.993

Because Layton sequels were more important, I suppose.

      • Anime10121

Cheaper and less risk than developing an entirely new series with PSP level graphics that seemed to have higher quality graphics than any of their more successful handheld rpgs/puzzle games

      • Postnjam

Layton horror would be cool, “Luke! That girl coming out of the TV reminds me of a puzzle!”

        • Scissors

“Calm down Luke, gentlemen don’t interrupt. Now solve this puzzle.”

  • notentirelythere

*slow, building chant* Aksys… Aksys… Aksys! Aksys!

    • NegativeZero

They’re talking about actual print novels here, not visual novels.

      • DyLaN

        Yen Press/any1, Yen Press/any1, Yen Press/any1…

      • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

if you could call a light novel a novel.

        • By Western standards, a Light Novel tends to be more of a novella than a novel, but they’re still worth checking out.

  • Shippoyasha

Damn that PSP footage looks incredible.

I hope they can give the game another try if they see the light novel has traction. Not to mention a lot of horror games making a comeback.

  • Wasn’t this also originally a PS2 game before it was a PSP game?

    • gk2012

You’re probably thinking about Okage, and no, they’re not the same or even related in any way. :)

      • Oh, yep, you’re right. Thank you for reminding me of what the name was.

  • May_Patra

…that’s not the kind of Ushiro news I was wishing for. :<
Here's hoping the novel does well and Level-5 gives the game another chance.

  • DyLaN

Would prob get it IF its translated into either chinese or english.

  • Haganeren

Didn’t see the trailer back then. Really dig it now… So sad.

  • Randgriz

Thank god this was saved! This was one of the Level 5 projects i was interested in the most back in the day.

Shame the game never got made but at least i can read it

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Oh boo. I forgot this one existed. I thought it looked brilliant and was quite excited about it at the time.

  • Ren Yuumei

Holy shit that look good….wtf level 5

  • Chip

I forgot this existed, but I remember being psyched for it. And now we’ll never know what it would have been like.

  • aizen310

    – “We have this game that looks outstanding for a PSP title.”
    – “Make it a light novel!”
    – “Okay. :(”

I guess, they just didn’t want to trash the script after working hard on it, so they chosed the cheapest way and adapt it to light novel form. Shame on you, Level-5.

    • Anime10121

Again, its not even a visual novel… its a light novel :(

      • aizen310

Oh, you’re right. Edited my root comment. Obviously, I read it as light novel, but my brain translated it as visual novel :/ Anyway, thanks for telling me :)

        • Rose Spinoza

Oh geez, I was making the same mental mistake myself.

    • Ahtma

Maybe if it sells well enough they’ll make a game?

      • aizen310

Good enough. Just hope they really think that way.

  • Shuryou

You always made me try to forget, Level-5. Through the Inazumas, Laytons, Danballs and Yo-Kais, I never forgot… I could never forget Ushiro after you showed me how amazing it looked way back. I’m glad SOMETHING is being done with it though. Just hope it gets a translation or fan translation.

  • rinalicat

Oh man I remember this game!! It was so creepy and cute! I fell in love right away! I was so upset when I found out it was cancelled!! I would LOVE to read this though!!

  • Aoshi00

I remember this from before.. Sad it got canceled just like cry on wasn’t materialized :(..

  • Hound

    That random encounter <3
It's like everything that I wished earthbound was

I would have bought this game so much.. if it came out today I'd trade off Persona Q or Fairy Fencer for it.

Level 5, work with Atlus and make this thing a reality! Even if it's on a console I don't own, I'd buy something like this. If sales would be poor, the collector's value would be godly. Use the power of psychically knowing that I made this post, and roll with it!

(I love the idea behind cartoony horror so much.. the juxtaposition is just lovely. If it's an RPG too <3. If it became a challenging horror rpg ♥ ♥ ♥!!)

  • vileBrenman

Wow this looked like a pretty interesting rpg. Wish they would revive it as such. The fighting reminded me of “off”

  • Harvey Tejada Loto

    gameplay reminds me of persona

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

    1. Walking into velvet room

    2. Instead of playing Tarot, Igor is haunting you

    3. People who were affected by Apathy Syndrome can attack you and drag you into Dark Hour. Where they will be possessed by shadows and become shadow themselves

  • isotrex

I don’t mind if they’ll release it on a 3DS or PSV as long as this game gets done. It really looks interesting.

  • That’s cool, sometimes I wouldn’t mind some games turned into a novel or anime than to be cancelled and forgotten.

I wonder if one day Yen Press will pick it up, but I”m sure it will be fan-translated in the meantime.

  • GreatKino

    Looked awesome:(

  • Ni ~Algidus~

    what a waste of potential

  • TheAnswerisback

WOW they messed up by canceling this …..just wow that game had mad potential it could have could have joined the list of great psp games. We’re in the next gen in terms of consoles and this game still looks nice to me. They should put it on the 3ds or vita something they dont even need to bother with graphics lol i’ll still play it

  • Red Antares

That game looked really good, the soundtrack is awesome too, shame they canceled it.

  • This looked like it would have been great. Too bad it was cancelled, although I do hope that the light novel does get brought over here (where I’ll add my Yen Press, please pay attention note to the discussion). However, I do have to say that I’m glad it didn’t materialize as a PSP game. If it had, there’s almost no chance we would have got it over here in North America (or Europe, though they got Inazuma before us, so I wouldn’t have been too surprised if it made it there). After all, we never did get any of their other PSP games except for Jeanne D’arc.

    • British_Otaku

Nah, there would have been a chance of either a digital of the game, the chance of a sequel and big license which leads to localisation (see Inazuma Eleven) and worst comes to worst some fan translation bringing it over.

If it was good and a game was an ideal form of media for the idea, it should have happened.

      • I never said that a game wasn’t the best method. With the PSP’s localization track record, especially with Level-5 games themselves, I’m glad it wasn’t a PSP game.

After all, Little Battlers became a huge franchise, but we never received any of those. And we only got Inazuma Eleven because Nintendo decided to step up their localization game.

A game would be awesome to receive for this. But our chances to receive it would be higher on something other than a Sony handheld.

        • British_Otaku

I suppose so, it could have been on the 3DS or PlayStation Vita which are more healthy now even if Level 5 hasn’t brought many Sony portable games.

Still if it did become a series, it could have gotten the original games ported to the PSVita or 3DS (see Inazuma Eleven’s Trilogy).

Our chances aren’t particularly high that this specific novel out of tons of video game or anime novels will get translated or fantranslated.

          • That’s true. In total, I view it as a loss on our end. At least with a game, we had a lot more chance to get it over here than with a light novel. However, Yen Press has gotten very big into light novel releases, so there’s more of a chance then there was a few years ago.

I also understand that porting could have occurred. I’m actually part of the group who hopes that this novel builds up enough interest to get Level-5 to look at making it a game again. And with all the effort they’re doing to learn how to make multi-platform console games – the possibility of a high profile PS4 or Xbox One game with this universe is enticing. However, it seems that Level-5, for the most part, dropped the idea and decided to shift focus to Youkai Watch. Which is honestly a shame, despite how much fun that game looks like.

          • Ahtma

I see Yokai Watch as their money maker for other projects.

          • British_Otaku

Yeah, even crappy releases of Dragon Ball Z led to FUNimation becoming the powerhouse it is today, saving and buying dozens of license rights and eventually making some good releases of Dragon Ball Z.

Presumably, much of the funds for the more risky Level 5 stuff like Time Travelers, Jeanne d’Arc and the retail release for Guild01 came from the countless Layton, Inazuma and Danball games

Still, Yokai Watch with being so safe for them, there is a decent chance of them depending on the license and perhaps adapting this game with that license instead. I know there are few crossovers unless they are called for in video games, but Kirby’s Epic Yarn for one example was planned to be a new IP even if Kirby and Yoshi seem to mesh well with the concept they have shown us.

          • Ahtma

I’m personally hoping they do something with that renewed Dark Chronicle trademark…

          • British_Otaku

Does Level 5 own that series now? From the little I know, I thought it belong to Sony in some sense.

The Vita could definitely use a port or remake of those PS2 RPGs if Sony cared to call up Level 5 to polish it up for that.

          • That would be wonderful, especially since it would be Sony Japan getting involved there. If it were up to Sony NA the vita would continue to just exist as a remote for the PS4.

          • Ahtma

Well, I mean, Sony /does/ own it, but it’s also still Level-5’s property. That basically boils down to they can only make Dark Chronicle stuff on Sony’s products, unless Sony says otherwise.

I’d be definitely behind a HD port of Dark Cloud and Dark Chronicle. Dark Chronicle in crazy HD graphics would really suit it, it’d make a beautiful game even more beautiful.

          • British_Otaku

Yeah, it would be awesome if Yen Press picked it up but have they picked up other novels based on video games or more importantly a tie to Level 5 or their work?

I doubted you just wanted it to stay a novel in Japanese forever. :P I genuinely doubt that they will decide to design an ambitious in house only PS4/Xbox One game based on this concept even if the novel did well, at least not immediately.

Ni no Kuni did happen, but it followed a portable installment and was supported by Bandai Namco as a publisher at least outside of Japan. They seem like they would stick to mobiles or portables judging from their track record.

  • James Darkly

    just why?! it looks sick!

  • Aristides

Why was this game canceled? It looked pretty solid

  • British_Otaku

Wow, the trailer looked promising. I’ll pick up the novel in hopes of either a good read or the novel being adapted into either a solid movie/anime or going full circle with a game.

I’m glad they didn’t abandon it completely.

  • Afternoon Intergalactic

From the trailer the game looked really interesting. Shame that it was dropped, but if the VN gets localized I’ll definitely give it a read.

  • MinakoArisato

I was realy hyped for this game, when I saw the trailer.
Glad to hear there is still something going on.

  • 3PointDecoupage

A turn based horror RPG by Level 5….
    -cries- IwantitIwantitIwantiiiiiiit!

    • Gholla20

It looks & sounds nice. I hate it didn’t ever get made. :(

  • Kroz

I thought I made this game up or something because it was announced then disappeared out of no where…Glad to know im not crazy.

  • Warboss Aohd

‘sigh’ a Fantastic looking Horror RPG, a genre that is rare in both East and West, and it’s turned into a damned Light Novel. On the Flipside, if it sells well, maybe we will get it later on, but that’s just me trying to be helpful. It’s always the cool, interesting looking games that get canceled.

Go tweet/facebook Level 5 and tell them how disappointed you are.

  • Valtiel Ikari

yo can’t even begin to comprenhend my hype wen I saw the thumbnail and read “level-5’s canceled horror RPG is being made”, so much happiness, self love and love for all living things, so much calm and yet su much bursting emotion, so much bliss, only to be fallowed by “into a light novel”, so much… dissapointment, sarrow consumes my every pore, no more emotions, no more love, only emptiness….

  • Göran Isacson

Ah, well, at least it still exists and may be getting made. If they do manage to make people interested in it there’s hopefully the chance it can get a new game for 3DS/Vita/whatever?

    • Warboss Aohd

      that’s my hope

  • Wilder

I really liked the trailer, too bad it had got cancelled…

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    oh come on that looked interesting :{

  • KaitoST

Does anyone know the name of the song at the beginning? I tried searching, but some sources say that it was meant to be released alongside with the game.

  • I’m guessing it was canceled due to it being a PSP project, but I still wish they would’ve tried to see how it would do. It looked really good, and pretty unique.

  • Alexandra Cordes

    I’ll take it.
