A Glimpse Of Raiden V

By Spencer . September 28, 2014 . 10:41pm

Next year is the 25th anniversary of Raiden, a vertical shmup originally developed by Seibu Kaihatsu. Moss formed after the arcade game maker went bankrupt and continued the series with Raiden III for PlayStation 2.

Raiden V is the works as an Xbox One exclusive. The teaser trailer above was shown at Microsoft’s booth during Tokyo Game Show, but these images give a better look at the next Raiden game.

Raiden IV was originally an Xbox 360 exclusive until this year when Raiden IV: Overkill came out for PlayStation 3.

The enthusiasm for XB1 exclusives in this comment section is palpable.

Glad XB1 is region free though. DLed the chaos child demo pretty amazing. Would be importing Raiden V as well. So far with crimson dragon, dead rising 3, ryse, and D4. I must say XB1 has more games I like. Ps4 I only got Knack :(…

They’re really going to tease things out to this degree?

  • Does it pay off for them to go exclusive on XB1? I’ve always wandered why so many shmups are only on x360.

I’ve wondered about that myself. Pretty much every other japanese exclusive is on Nintendo or Playstation but Xbox gets the shmups.

    • Microsoft’s Xbox brand is “the shooter box”, after all. In every country ;)

i think is because its cheaper to develop for (i.e: you have to pay a licensing fee to develop on most hardware, m$ fee in japan is most likely a lot cheaper than Sony’s)…

Most shmup developers are small and don’t have the time, funds, or specifically trained personnel to invest into developing for platforms that are not Windows PC programming environments.

Look at some of the most popular arcade boards, like Taito’s Type X or Sega’s Ring families, which are pretty much Windows PCs. If you can develop for those, you can easily port to Xbox 360.

I’m going to have to start copy-pasting this answer for people who don’t follow shmups or the arcade scene closely.

      • Thanks man I had no clue whatsoever. Will spread the word as well. Cheers.

    Game looks amazing.

  • I don’t see any Metal Gears anywhere though =P

I love me a good shmup game….top-downs especially….my whole fascination with these games started with FireShark for the Sega Genesis, then I got into Raiden, I had Raiden Project for PSX….Einhander is also one of my absolute favorite games of all time, even though it isn’t a top-down it’s still in the general category. I like shmup games but not bullet hell, luckily Raiden doesn’t take it as far as games like Ikaruga which to me is just ridiculous; Yes, yes, I know, I’m a casual…

If they keep delaying this title the XB1 might be off shelves in Japan by the time this is released.
