Final Fantasy XV Won’t Let You Change Characters In Battle

By Sato . October 2, 2014 . 5:23am

This morning, Square Enix held a special livestream to talk more about Final Fantasy Type-0 and Final Fantasy XV, and share some information that they didn’t have enough time to address during Tokyo Game Show. [Update: Archived recording added above.]

First off, Final Fantasy XV’s new director, Hajime Tabata, has confirmed once and for all that the game won’t feature a character-switching system, so you’ll be restricted to playing as Noctis in combat.

It was also mentioned that the PlayStation Store information for Final Fantasy XV that was derived from last year’s Tokyo Game Show said that the battle system would let you enjoy switching between characters. Tabata apologized on behalf of Square Enix for the error.

While Square Enix decided not to include character-switching due to complications, they said that they’d rather focus on the one-character design, and are working on making something unique with the battle system they have for Final Fantasy XV.

When asked if Final Fantasy XV will play more like Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy Type-0, Square said that in its early stages, it was more like Kingdom Hearts, following which certain features brought it closer to Final Fantasy Type-0. Now, it feels more like its own thing.

You might remember seeing Noctis in the earlier trailers of the game (back when it was Versus XIII), where he was shown using an ability with multiple swords rotating around him. In combat footage shown during the stream, that ability was shown once again, and Noctis was using it to launch sword attacks against enemies while running around. This feature is still in its early stages.

Now you’ve destroyed everything, SE :(

  • Tetris

I just want this game so badly. I can’t wait for the demo.

  • I can smell the salt happening a mile away.

    • Princess_Eevee9

Cause it’s salt when something is legitimately wrong with the way a games direction is going. Dude has stated how he was trying to go back to this series roots yet not allowing switching characters for combat? When it present in the series near the beginning?

      • Brandonmkii

You not liking it does not make it wrong. Game could still be fun. I’m holding my reservations for the finished product.

        • James Todd

i like the way you think dude unlike most of these people you are not afraid of change

        • Princess_Eevee9

I’m sure you can view more than my disappointment with this news development. Don’t settle for less when they’re better than this.

        • Crystal Power

This is change, but that doesn’t mean it’s good! It’s like um, always getting to choose your pie. Apple Pie, Bluberry, Pie, Cherry Pie, or Pumpkin Pie! Now they are only limiting us to one Pie and we can’t have the other’s when we originally could.

Terrible analogy, but I believe you understood. :- )

EDIT: Meant to hit reply to James Todd, sorry about that.

        • The-Beast

I’m with you dude. I’ll give the game a chance before making any judgement.

      • I’m one of those people who is open to the idea of it than just shun it as a black sheep. I’ll be happily to eat my own words if its a bad game.

If i dont like it then i wont buy it its just simple as that.
If you dont like what you hear then fine it isnt catered to you.

        • Princess_Eevee9

I’ve read enough to know that the creator lied when he said they wanted to go back to their roots with this title. I can overlook no female party members since other titles have strong female roles and not every game has to have shoehorned in, but to limit the gameplay might as well make this a 1-party guy.

          • Ah you are a reasonable fellow. This is more a commendable reply then. “MY SPHINCTER IS BROKEN CAUSE ALL MALE GROUPS!”

            Your points are valid then.

          • Princess_Eevee9

Yes I’m super pissed because it’s an all-male sausage fest with no females in sight. Not because I want them to actually try with this game. Nor the fact that their pet project Final Fantasy Explorers is getting more love with each new batch of info that is released. Nah can’t be that.

          • HarakiriKami

First FF game has no females.

            Back to roots confirmed

            #REKT

          • Princess_Eevee9

Like only the first game existed and had the blown up popularity that accompanied Final Fantasy IV and VI.

      • Fub Frank

There is nothing “legitimately” wrong with the direction of a game going the way the director wants it to go.

    • Cheesy12

You can even see it now in written form.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      bruh its the Sea

  • triablos

Meh, this isn’t really a big deal for me. I usually stick to the main character like I do in Tales.

    • CirnoTheStrongest

I never do in Tales xD

  • Blati. Boyu.

    OMG.
I swear this game is getting worse with each news.
    – No playable females
    – Casual gameplay
    – Hit one button for consecutive attacks
    – Only Noctis is playable

    What. The. Hell.
This game is seriously gonna be worse than FFXIII.
Ughhh, I can’t with this series anymore.

It’s like the game has just pretty graphics, but everything else is total BS. Should’ve been just a movie, really. So much fail in one game.

    • legotetris

In FFXIII, you get linear maps.
In FFXV, you get linear gameplay.

      • Blati. Boyu.

        Yes. So what’s next?
I’m sure there’s no Chocobo in this game, remplaced by the so-modern car. R.I.P cuties Chocobos.

8 freakin’ years, and the game seems terrible so far.

        The series’ soul is dead.

        • Lmao. Overeach much? Its just q game people. series soul? I almost peed my pants from laughter.

        • Jeremy Noble

          they did confirm chocobos earlier.

        • legotetris

Well I don’t think the ‘soul’ is dead, look at Final Fantasy Explorers for example. And pretty anime boys with perfect gravity defying hair? That’s your standard Final Fantasy fare.

SE is trying something new, and kudos to them for giving it a go. If it’s not our cup of tea, then we simply don’t purchase it :p

          • Princess_Eevee9

The reason people are upset is that why a spin-off game like Explorers is getting better everything than XV which has been in development longer.

          • Psycho Punch

How is Explorers better than XV? Honest question.

      • HarakiriKami

The story’s been linear since FF7

    • Princess_Eevee9

I swear it’s like the game’s creators just want to kill off Final Fantasy in every way possible.

    • Rayhan PromisedGallery

      don’t forget NO JUMP button

      • For christ sake, stop hating! Tabata confirmed this morning that YES, JUMP IS IN THE GAME!

    • sakanaとkoeda

Yeah, I’m not sure why they would choose to continue to limit party customization. It’ll probably play more like DMC or Ninja Gaiden.

    • CirnoTheStrongest

Type 0 HD has got a lot going for it. Admittedly it’s a port of a PSP game from years back, but it still seems like a much better game than this.

    • Stephen Mc Devitt

Did you say the same thing about XIII in 2009 or did you close you eyes, covered your eyes and said bad about XIII until it came out.
Not once, you questioned about what the story will be about before playing it?

  • Shippoyasha

I thought the one character system in Lightning Returns was pretty brilliant. It’s not like you won’t have access to party members helping you out in battle in this game. Reminds me of what Tales and Persona 3 have gone for in the past.

As long as the overall combat is fluid, fun and challenging, I am okay with it. I probably would have preferred a character switch personally, but if they feel conviction in this system and follow through with it and succeed, I’m ok with it.

    • This. This right here is an openmind set.

    • Psycho Punch

Same here. I’m really liking how Final Fantasy’s battle system is evolving into some sort of a hybrid of action-oriented, and traditional RPG combat.

    • Princess_Eevee9

What the Tales of series does right is allowing you to select any character that you want to play as and not restrict your character selection barring certain battles where you had to be a select character. What’s the problem is that Final Fantasy has been allowing you to use other characters to fight as but now you can’t in this game? That is major bull, they should be doing everything in their power to please us fans for this game not this crap.

      • Brandonmkii

I really want to be supportive of fans that sound upset by this, but all it sounds like is that they’re afraid of any kind of change and have a narrow world-view of what could make this game enjoyable.

        • Well, when they post glib responses with no explanation, they kinda sound more like trolls than fans imo

          • Brandonmkii

I like to give people the benefit of a doubt. I know many fans are passionate, but it’s still weird to see so many people angry about something they could potentially enjoy.

        • Princess_Eevee9

I’m still excited for this game but with every piece of information I read it’s not looking good. I’m still going to buy the game when it comes out but I have high standards when it comes to RPGs because they’re my favorite genre ever and Final Fantasy is the reason why. I have a open-mind it’s that it’s dying the more I read features that should be in the game aren’t.

          • Brandonmkii

That right there is the problem. “Features that should be in the game aren’t.” The inclusion or lack of features does not necessitate a drop in quality or enjoyment. It might for you, but personal opinion is not a fair measure. I guess I’m just an old man who’s played more games than most, but it depresses me to see people so unwilling to accept something they don’t like as good on a wider scale.

          • Princess_Eevee9

Having less of something that could enhance gameplay is good? Pulling out the “back in my day” card is rather old too.

          • Brandonmkii

I’ve played a lot of games where smaller parties (or one character) are featured, and lots of them are fine games. I don’t see why this won’t be any different. Your only argument is ” it’s not what they’ve done before,” A fitting counter argument is “So?”

          • You’re dumbest arguments shine when you hypocritically use age to your favor your argument. Having less if what You think is essential could in fact enhance the gameplay as one person is not the sole authority in what’s good.

    • CirnoTheStrongest

The problem with the “one character” system is what if you don’t like said character or playing as said character? That’s the point of being able to switch characters. Which the Tales games always did (though you had to get items in the earliest ones to get past it), so I’m not sure why you’re even talking about them.

    • Stephen Mc Devitt

No, it’s not. Lightning has a dull face, the art direction has none of the sci-fi aesthetics from FFXIII, the amount of music sounds so paper-thin and the gameplay feels exactly the same as the last two. Press one button and Lightning flies out with a chain of combos, not allowing you to control her speed or maneuver like with Devil May Cry.

    • “As long as the overall combat is fluid, fun and challenging, I am okay with it. I probably would have preferred a character switch personally, but if they feel conviction in this system and follow through with it and succeed, I’m ok with it.”

      Agreed.

  • Brandonmkii

    Fun combat? Sign me up.

  • Go2hell66

ughhhh this is the last thing i ever wanted to hear about this game…

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery
  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

    you play as Noctis alone…
    alone….

  • Princess_Eevee9

Trying to go into this not already hating but you’re making it even harder Square thanks. Why is Final Fantasy Explorers already looking like a better game when you’re devoting more time on this title?

    • Blati. Boyu.

      lmao, so true.
The DS game looks WAY BETTER than this shit.

      • Princess_Eevee9

Are you thinking of DS spin-off games or the new 3DS game coming out?

      • You realize ff e is releasing in December? Which means more completed assets, promotion and polished than a game with no due date?

        • Princess_Eevee9

And you realize that XV has been in development longer than Explorers right? So they had first pickings when it came to developers time.

          • Yeas this is how it works… Everything you just wrote can’t be negated at all… Do a Google search for actual Dev time of both games team sizes. The fact that XV and ffe don’t share the same staff. You are asserting your opinion as fact. And I have to tell you you are wrong.

    • Go2hell66

all they have to do is add autobattle and its a wrap

    • Stephen Mc Devitt

I don’t like Monster Hunter. I want something that benefits more for the single-player.

  • Blati. Boyu.

Auto Battle is next, trust me on this.

    • Psycho Punch

If that happens, it’s most likely going to be optional just like in FF XIII. You don’t have to let that game play itself if you don’t want it to.

      • Go2hell66

auto battle or not the game looks like its playing itself anyway

        • And….?

          That means what?

        • Psycho Punch

It looks like? What, do you want it to have jump button to execute launches so you feel like you’re the one who’s actually playing the game?

          • Go2hell66

well for starters a command list would be nice

          • Tell us more…

          • Lmao my thoughts exactly lol. Anyway? Go2heck, you know that makey no sense

          • Go2hell66

sure it does, everything shown so far looks QTE

          • But if its the standard gameplay then its just the look. If its not QTE than half your argument is mute? Can we settle on that?

          • Psycho Punch

What game are we talking about again?

          • Omg just no

    • Credentials please

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

i still think Versus 13 looks more fun to play…
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQ7MwTXYLpg

    • Heropon

i agree . The 2011 trailer look superior

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      yes 100%

    • Stephen Mc Devitt

I admit this one looks better but it was pre-scripted, unplayable vertical slice just like Final Fantasy XIII’s “gameplay” from E3 2006 and Watch Dogs in E3 2012.

  • Gideon de Groodt

    This looks so Awesome! I can’t wait to play this~! : D

I used to end up overly buffing the main character from the other series anyways. :’)
This gives me a tighter focus towards that play-style.
AND I LOVE ACTION RPG FINAL FANTASY GAMES—-

Eventhough I don’t own a PS4 yet, I’ll just nag my friends who do-

    • Ps1 Cloud

      said who?

      • Gideon de Groodt

        Says me.

        • Princess_Eevee9

          Mii who?

          • Ps1 Cloud

            who Mii?

          • Gideon de Groodt

I’m not gonna let any of you people who feel all “sad” “Let down” or “depressed” about this game, rain on my parade.

I am my own person, and am 100% psyched for this game. And nothing that anyone says can change that.

Go feel sad on your own, this is a site where people can share their thoughts on games. Not where we disregard people who are not saying/feeling the same things as the majority.

            So please. Don’t disrespect. Thanks.

          • Princess_Eevee9

It’s sad that the joke just flew right over your head.

          • Gideon de Groodt

            That is not possible.
My reflexes are too fast, I will catch it.

          • Princess_Eevee9

!! I Excuse my ignorance then.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

………I have Zero hype for final-fantasy 15 the more news I read about it the lest it interested me

    • Go play destiny. Hype should not even exist after that game flopped. I’m sorry for the loss of your hype. So sad you put personal expectations on a tech demo from 2006 just to have your hype crushed under the weight of your own false pretense of what the game should be.

      • Hey no need for that.

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

destiny was a let down tho

          • WTF IS DESTINY! But seriously i dont touch shooters unless its semi implemented like metal gear.

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

            its Halo on ps4

          • I know that silly. I just dont touch shooters in general.

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

I only like Time Splinters *gets hit with boulders*

          • Actually halo is like a lot better. And I’m not a fan of halo, but destiny is NOT an RPG. There’s like 5 cutscenes in the whole game among other marketing… Errors.

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

            I didn’t play it I watched a friend play it for 3 hours…. we both said http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHVtZsCZ1TA

          • Lmao.

3 hours! I’m sorry for that. Seriously. But at least we got that Video out if it lol. 3hours to watch the game slap you in the face with a loot roll. Random generators! Random! RPG!

          • Yeah that’s what hype gets you. Don’t get swept up and then blame a game company for that. That was the original message in a nutshell.

      • Ps1 Cloud

plz sir, don’t defend this ff15

      • Princess_Eevee9

        This makes no sense.

        • I’m sure to you anything that does not equate hype to success is a liilttle hard to follow? Lemme break it down:

Hype is created by you, not a company or product. When you feed said hype, your brain starts thinking of cool possibilities and systems you might come to expect. Hype multuliplies with internet fodder and miscommunication between developer, “news” site, and other hyped consumers.

Basically you set yourself up for an emotional failure thats based on mostly pre fabricated assumptions and first impressions of the game. Which is why noctis is emo even though its been stated he’s quite light hearted and charismatic. Emo = State of mind. Not wearing black. BTW

Hype is the reason Destiny made back nearly all of its 500 million dollar budget despite being an over marketed flop not containing nearly EVERYTHING shown at press events.

Did any if that make sense to you? I know sometimes I like to serve my argument as a farce, wrapped in a masquerade, smothered in a facade frosting.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        wait what?

      • Brandonmkii

Hey, don’t make fun of my favorite shooty loot grab game.

        • Lol. I gave it a chance and failed. Shooters just hate me. I think its my clothes ~ ~

    • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Same. And that’s why I’ll take my traditional-modern mix JRPG that is Xenoblade Chronicles X.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

final-fantasy 15 is turning into linear gameplay Emo Boy-band on Tour simulator

        • Brandonmkii

Come on man, I haven’t played an FF game that wasn’t linear. Why is it suddenly an insult?

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

            mystic Quest

        • NintendoPSXTheSecond

          “B-But Emo sells!”
“Square-Enix we’re not in the 90’s and early 2000’s anymore.”

          • Slater

Eh, they’ve been saying for years that Noctis is specifically NOT a gloomy emo boy. He acts serious because that’s what he thinks a prince should be like in public. Also in the TGS trailer his friends didn’t seem like a gloom and doom bunch.

          • But the false assumptions remain.

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

I liked the belts and zippers..

          • NintendoPSXTheSecond

It’s all about the skin tight suits, flare, jackets, scarves and hoods now.

        • I wish people who didn’t know what emo was could be fined for using the word incorrectly

      • Kango234

What’s traditional about auto-battle and endless fetch quests?

  • Prithivi

It is getting worse after every new…

  • James Todd

why are y’all complaining most of you hypocrites are gonna buy this game anyways

    • Princess_Eevee9

Because when I express a reason I dislike a game I like to know what I’m talking about usually. And returns exist too.

    • CirnoTheStrongest

I can say that I will not. I still have yet to buy LR, and have zero plans to do so. Lightning is the worst possible character in the 13 series, everyone is better than her. So a game entirely about her? Yeaaaaah…not touching that, unless it’s free/dirt cheap. The gameplay wasn’t that good either (from the demo I played).

      • James Todd

then i’m not talking about guys like you i’m talking about people who don’t like it and buy still because its final fantasy or cod or mario etc.

        • CirnoTheStrongest

True, there are quite a lot of people like that

  • …….Welp all that hype is gone.

  • Setsu Oh

yea, no char switch! get that game out thar!!!!! NOW!

  • My hype for this game is dying. For longest I was eager to hear any news about FFXV, now everytime I’m like…. stop.

    • Ps1 Cloud

I know right. It just hurts now.

      • Yeah. I want FF to live up to its name but I honestly don’t see that happening anymore. I could be wrong.

        • Ps1 Cloud

The Tales series is the new champ.

          • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Correction. Xenoblade is the new champ.

          • Ps1 Cloud

Tales has a longer track record. dating from the snes era. Xeno just started, not counting Xenogears, but starting with Xenoblade from the wii

          • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Doesn’t mean it can’t be just as good or even better.

          • Ps1 Cloud

your right. it just needs more titles to compete with the tales series, that’s all I’m saying

          • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Ah well, with how big Xenoblade X is looking it can substitute as 4 or 5 games right? XD

          • Stephen Mc Devitt

It’s crafting and chain-combo system put me off for nearly 4 years now.

          • Adrian Duran

            MegaTen is the champ

          • THIS!

          • AlaAlba

MegaTen is weak compare to Tales, FF in terms of sales and popularity, but the series is still the best for me.

          • Adrian Duran

            then DQ is the champ

          • AlaAlba

Sure, DQ is super popular and has archived crazy sales, only behind FF.

          • I don’t have any experience regarding the Tales series, so I really can’t comment on that.

          • Crystal Power

Agreed so much! I use to prefer FF, but now I’m looking forward to Tales.

  • Ps1 Cloud

I can’t stop shaking my head…like wtf…I’m just so disappointed.

  • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Soooo. They tried to make it like Kingdom Hearts, scrapped that (Thank God), tried to make it like traditional FF, scrapped that (Minus the overworld) and now we have generic character designs are limited to ONE character?
Welp. Going to play FF Explorers and FFXIV for the rest of my life.
And if I want something new, here I come Xenoblade Chronicles X!

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

FF Explorers and Xenoblade Chronicles X! owns my hype this year

    • Princess_Eevee9

Maybe the story is something they have to fall back on. I’m really hoping that it’s above average.

      • NintendoPSXTheSecond

At this point the story looks predictable.
He’s a prince, kingdom get’s usurped, brings his strongest and most valued friends, goes out on the road to find his path meeting new clues and answers to himself, finally decides to man up, goes back to his old kingdom, takes the crown again.
        Sounds like Fire Emblem.

        • Princess_Eevee9

          Great….

      • Ps1 Cloud

the story can save a game. I honestly believe that FF13 had a great story. If FF13 had traditional gameplay it would have been AMAZING!!!

    • Stephen Mc Devitt

Designs are simple and not overly-designed like Lightning in her last game.

      • NintendoPSXTheSecond

I’d rather take style and uniqueness than generic simplicity.

        • Stephen Mc Devitt

It’s not unique, it’s ugly as sin.

  • Ps1 Cloud

They just need to resurrect the Sqauresoft team from the 90s. This action rpg ff shit is just not cutting it. The word of the day is “traditional.” And don’t give me that “try something new” crap b/c the tales series has been growing strong by continuing what they do best, unlike Square-Enix-soft over here.

    • Princess_Eevee9

Have you heard of a new 3DS game in development called Legend of Legacy? Being produced by some former SquareSoft developers and so far it looks amazing!

      • Ps1 Cloud

the game that looks like Bravely Default? sure I’ve heard of it

        • Princess_Eevee9

Yeah. Any thoughts on that game so far?

          • Ps1 Cloud

I haven’t seen any gameplay, just seen a pic of it, but I didn’t read the article. If it’s traditional rpg play style I’ll def play it. I enjoyed Bravely until the end when I had to repeat the same thing over and over again.

          • Princess_Eevee9

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBzhsmc0RdY

Game’s reveal trailer hope this helps. :)

          • Ps1 Cloud

thx. looks good. more rpg’ish then ff15

          • Princess_Eevee9

No problem really excited for the game!

          • Michael Cortorreal

            Oh its here ^-^
I just said to this user of ever heard of this game.
Looks cool, like the book esque world.

Also it seems you can “leave” the “Island” (which in fact…is a massive continent) because it says somewhere “magic can only be used there”

          • Princess_Eevee9

Oh really? Wonder how that is gonna affect the gameplay.

    • Hmm? If you dont like then why stay on it? You can always ya know? Dont buy it.

      • Stephen Mc Devitt

Exactly. Don’t like a product? Then by all means, don’t buy or support it.

        • I’m a supporting it. Cause i dont make harsh judgements unless its well ya know actually out.

          • Stephen Mc Devitt

I didn’t like DmC when it was first announced but I knew I had to give it a chance someday. I bought it, played it and it was okay. It was fun but Dante himself was pretty boring if you remove all the f-bombs, but I still hated the game for what was going on around it and how it may represent Capcom’s attitude to the world.

          • DmC was a reboot titled but i play it regardless. The only fun i had was the dlc.

    • Stephen Mc Devitt

I won’t give you that “try something new” fluff but I will say for you to have a more realistic perspective.
Before NBA and WWE, there were loads of small different basketball leagues and wrestling shows in the 70’s before most of them got bought out and merged with the rising ones. Those that weren’t bought faded into obscurity. You honestly think it’s that simple to undo all that and expect everything to go back the way things were before?
      BE REALISTIC.
From a business point-of-view, it’s stupid and financially suicidal. If Square-Enix re-separated as Squaresoft and Enix, taking back their respective franchises? You think it’ll be all better? What about the IP that came after the merger? What about the IP from the once-financially-troubled Eidos?
You clearly believe you live in a fantasy land of gumdrops and wishes, not that you’re the first, but I live in the real world, where real life logic exists.

      • Princess_Eevee9

That’s not even the point Mako was trying to make.

        • Ps1 Cloud

          I know right

      • Ps1 Cloud

I said resurrect the team not disband the company, sheesh.

        • Stephen Mc Devitt

This so-called team would rather not because they moved on.
Insomniac Games will never make another Spyro game, like in the days of the PS1, ever again.
I’ve accepted it, why can’t you?

          • Ps1 Cloud

so they can’t make a traditional ff rpg either?!

          • Stephen Mc Devitt

Apparently the FF name is too bloated and execs will force it’s developers to do something stupid with it. Bravely Default doesn’t have the Final Fantasy and thus more creative freedom.
Does a name really matter if the context is still there? Let me put it to you this way, IF Final Fantasy XV ends being a bad game, the it’s because it was a bad game not because of some name attached.
You can still buy the older titles. FFI-IX are all on Playstation Store as with X and X-2 HD on PS3 and Vita.

          • cesimmon

The whole point of the series and what the directors have said is that each numbered final fantasy is a departure and a chance to change and try new things. That’s why Bravely Default came out for the “we want things the way they were” people.

    • Michael Cortorreal

Ever heard of The Legend of Legacy?

      • Ps1 Cloud

just got wind of it today

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

This is bad. This is really bad. I’m very disappointed in you, Tabata and Square-Enix.
I get that you wanna get the game done ASAP but that’s what happened to XIII as well. That game did not play like what I hoped for from that 2006 trailer.
Noctis uses multiple swords, one resembling Gladio’s, so using a character that feels more like a stripped down version of Noctis is understandable. But what about Prompto? Can we AT LEAST get sections, where you get to play as him with some Uncharted-style shooting, as Prompto or do you finally know that you’re terrible with third-person shooters like Dirge of Cerberus and Mindjack.

    • Princess_Eevee9

I’m still trying to have hope. But it’s vastly dying.

    • Emiya Shirou

When it was still called Versus there was a trailer that showed prompto playable with shooting sections, don’t know why they bothered to scrap that.

      • Stephen Mc Devitt

It looked really good. Last year, the game showed to have chest-high walls for cover, I wonder if that’s being scrapped too if Prompto isn’t playable.
Even if the game turns out good and if it sells over 5 million or more, I imagine Square-Enix will call it a financial failure. Who would be shocked? not us.
Anyway, if Bravely Seconds ends up more financially successful in the eyes of execs, perhaps it’s developers could be commissioned for a new FF maybe.

      • cesimmon

I thought they explained that it just wasn’t feasible in the current build of the game. That’s why there is communication with your party members as far as the team attacks go.

  • Emiya Shirou

I heard jump around 31 minute mark, if some could translate that part to see if it’s confirmed or not. About the character switching, obviously I preferred other playable characters but the battle system can work flawless with just one like Crisis Core, Lightning Returns and Kingdom Hearts.

    • Stephen Mc Devitt

Crisis Core was fun but ain’t touching LR with a 100-foot pole.

      • Emiya Shirou

Of course but for a PSP game it worked pretty well (Wishing for a HD remake like type-0)

  • Slater

Gameplay looks way better then in the TGS trailer

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Md7GhVH3vUg

    • Rayhan PromisedGallery

“attack once, then there will be countless sword automatically atatck the enemy”

And seriously, that gameplay beg for JUMP damn JUMPING. I want to run around acrobatically

      • Slater

…There IS jumping, he does a jump at 1:04 then uses his sword teleporting acrobatics.

        • Emiya Shirou

Yes, jump confirmed at least. Didn’t think I would be so happy for a simple jump mechanic.

  • Zazon Zenzy

Oof, so much hate for this game! Poor FFXV :(

I’m not the one who minds inability to switch characters, but I’ll expect Noctis to Raise the party members all the time. Plus, we’re not entirely sure how the entire game will play out. There’s no clear indication if the auto evasion will have any risk or not.

Seriously, you guys prefer the good old FF1 where the characters are blank slates?

    • Hater wanna hate, lover wanna love I dont even want. NONE OF THE ABOVE I WANNA-

Do the things that R.Kelly did on the hate.

    • James Todd

i know man people are so picky

    • Princess_Eevee9

No I want a game like Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI when it comes to character selection and new gameplay styles are welcomed as long as they’re down right.

  • Aqua King

This is the worst news I heard today. I am not liking the ‘Lightning Returns’ trend that this series is heading towards.

    • Ps1 Cloud

      i know right

  • Ps1 Cloud

Square if you wanna make games like this, so be it, just stop slapping the Fina Fantasy name on it.

    • Stephen Mc Devitt

They didn’t with Bravely Default but that meant no hassle was included.

      • Time Sage

Ironicly BD is alot like the classic FFs

  • ameliabaz

Aw, damn. I was hoping this wouldn’t be the case. I don’t want to see another “if the main character dies, it’s Game Over” situation like FFXIII.

  • Arvin Jay

Somebody friggin’ tell Tabata to atleast have other characters playable -_- Noctis is fine with me, but it would be great to have the other 3 playable, I mean is this still part of Tetsuya Nomura’s vision?

  • KazukiNanbu

ok, i was optimistic until now, this is disappointing, REALLY disappointing, the blacklash that the demo will recibe will be stratospheric

  • Ps1 Cloud

this is why I’m a Tales Series fan now. They have been doing the same thing since the snes era. and the games are still great, even better. Square was suppose to take what made their games great and add it w/ the current gen tech, but instead they take away and add high end cut scenes

    • Zazon Zenzy

It has been FFVII, you know…?

    • midgard229

honestly it doesnt need character swapping. tales combat is far different. the way combat works in 15 has to do with a lot of interactive environments, team attacks, and complex AI in an open world environment.

I dont see anything wrong with Kingdom hearts gameplay and its just one character.

      • This guy… This guy had made more sense,

        • Ferrick

not really, considering that type-0 did character swapping just fine

          • Ah.. There is that. But i see it differently though.
Like XIII had its paragram thingy.
Typ-o more more diverse with its massive cast so it has to be playable
XV no verus Xiii look more inclined to one player but then again.. The old trailer back in 2011 looked diversed as well. with prompto being playable You know what screw it… I got nothing lol

  • Anko Is Furious (King T.G.P)

Screw what anyone says I’m still looking forward to the game lol.

Not only that I bet the people complaining about it despite not even trying it yet are still going to make a purchase in some way whether it’s renting, used or on sale so honestly it doesn’t make a difference unless you plan to stick by what you say when its out.

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

    new details on gameplay
    http://gematsu.com/2014/10/final-fantasy-xv-director-addresses-fan-concerns-new-gameplay

Q: So after all, the E3 2013 trailer was a lie? You can’t actually play like that?

A:You can fight like that. I think in the recent play demonstration
we showed several techniques and functions, but at E3 last year the game
was running on a prototype environment (Ebony). At TGS 2014 we showed
the game running in the actual environment (Luminous). Right now we are
in the process of migrating functions from the prototype into it. It
will take time to migrate it all. I wanted to show footage in the actual
environment as soon as possible, so I ended up showing something that
is in the midst of migrating. The video shows actual footage, not an
idealized version. It will become more and more advanced from here on
    out.

Q: Can you go into detail about the “holding down the button” issue? Is it really okay to just hold the button down?

A:It’s not that simple! (Laughs.) Yes, when you continue to hold down
the guard button, you can basically auto-guard and evade, but it
consumes MP. You can’t infinitely evade. You have to think about timing,
when it’s a good idea to attack or evade. Also, you aren’t invincible.
There are attacks you can’t avoid. In those cases, there are also
    essential technical evasion methods.

    Q: What about attacks?

A:When you push the attack button, you invoke the standard combo. You
can change the actions by using it in coordination with the directional
buttons. The actions change depending on your circumstances—things like
whether you’re guarding and whether the timing is right, (imagine in
this circumstance: when you’re guarding, you might get a chance to
counterattack or something), or if your companions are nearby.

Q: Can you change the operational character?

A:Not in its current specifications. Everyone on the development team
thoroughly looked into an Active Cross Battle system that made free use
of attack, guard, and co-op functions, but as a result they arrived at
the conclusion that changing characters would be too difficult. In order
to create a new and interesting battle system, we ended up not being
able to put in the character switching.

    Q: Is jumping in?

A: It is. Considering PlayStation 4 has plenty of buttons, there is an independent jump button.

    Q: What about free running?

A: It’s there. Except for the character switching, everything that
was in the E3 2013 trailer is still there. All the cool actions like the
weapons barrier that surrounds Noctis called “Phantom Sword,” and the
short warps and jumping from the Behemoth battle are in the actual game.
We’ll release more information later on, so please look forward to it.

    Q: What about weapon selection?

A: You set them yourself before battle. You set each weapon
considering what actions you can use with which weapons. You can only
determine one weapon from the ones equipped to be your main one, but
that weapon will come with techniques which can be invoked at your
discretion in battle. Besides the basic assault button (attack), you can
invoke techniques with the technique button.

Q: I can’t tell if it’s more like Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy Type-0. Which is it?

A: We explained that when you push the attack button, you invoke the standard combo, which is similar to Type-0. Considering the battle system as a whole, however, it is different from both Type-0 and Kingdom Hearts.

Q: Is it being simplified for casual users? Is is still an action RPG?

A: In order to widen its appeal, we’re developing the game aware that
anyone can immediately be able to play it, however the game as a whole
is not casual. Because it’s a core game, we have casual controls. If you
obtain good weapons and level up, you won’t have to worry about
    clearing the main scenarios.

Q: Will you listen to feedback from the demo version?

A: We want to reference your feedback during development, but how we’re going to do that is still under review.

Q: Haven’t you been poor at putting out information?

A: If our fans are uneasy about the information we have released,
then our ways of issuing information may in fact be poor. Even though we
didn’t have a lot of time, I wanted to make clear the current
situation. In the future, our information releases might be poor, but I
think we can receive your approval.

Additional details were shared on cooperative chains, parrying, and other general information.

“There are systems we want to tell you more about.”

Final Fantasy XV’s Cooperative Chains & Growth

“The co-op moves aren’t one-offs, you can do them continuously.”

“Invoking co-op moves is automatic, but it’s necessary for the player to aim their mark.”

Turning to the Side = The Concept of Parrying

“To connect a co-op move while avoiding an enemy attack, you have to keep an eye out for an indication when to invoke it.”

    “You can’t auto-parry.”

“It feels accomplishing to pull of a co-op attack from a parry.”

    More details to come later.

    General

“Even though there are parts from Versus that we have ended up changing, we’ve developed them in more interesting ways, I want you to look forward to it.”

“I get reports everyday from development staff about what was said
on the internet. If we have material, I’d like to release development
information again in a live broadcast like this on November 1.”

“Next month they’ll release information from other development members.”

“Development progress is at 55%. Final Fantasy XV has
entered the phase where they are mass producing resource material. After
that, it’s a fight against the amount of resource material and time. We
are also hiring people to help make Final Fantasy XV, so interested applicants should check out the homepage.”

    • Stephen Mc Devitt

HA! I’m happy that there’s something there to say “It’s not all auto.” because it consumes MP.
Imagine, trying to relax actually has some strings attached.
I’ll play the game manually so I can save MP for magic attacks and maybe some summons.

    • KazukiNanbu

doesn’t sound bad, too bad they have to scrap the option to switch characters but asside for that the game looks promising

    • Detrimont

      See, imo, this sounds awesome

  • DragKudo

They got me hyped and now they slowly tear it away.

  • KingGunblader

Welp that’s another strike against a game I was once frothing at the mouth to play.

I know that Square Enix does not know me, nor do they care what I think, but it seems like every announcement they’ve made regarding this game was specifically designed to make me not want to play it anymore.

  • KyoyaHibari

Quit telling us what we can’t do SE, holy crap. First the streamlined gameplay, then the lie about playing as multiple characters. Wow. We even saw that you could play as the blonde gunner in that old E3 trailer, but now that’s a no go. Awesome.

    • Stephen Mc Devitt

Better than how they handled XIII? At least we know ahead of time rather than when the game came out.

  • Noor Mahmoud

A game limited to a main character? Like almost every other game ever? People need to stop complaining.

    • zferolie

But in JRPG’s this is not the norm. Sure it happens but rarely, and very rare in FF games.

Yes Kingdom Hearts has this but this is a FF game. Plus the games have started letting you play as others (BBS and DDD)

  • Gaisaph

Extremely disappointed. So many different characters with variety and now we’re stuck with just 1 character? Yeowch.

I may not be Nomura, but if he were still directing Final Fantasy XV, I think he may added character switching available.

  • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Ugh. Major downgrade from the FFXII battle system confirmed. That game had party leader switching in a seamless battle system and it was running on the laughably weak PS2.

Seriously, the only person at Square Enix that still knows how to make a good JRPG battle system with all party members playable is Hiroyuki Ito. I can’t wait to see his battle system in FFXVI.

  • Jezzy

So much hype lost over the past two weeks.

  • … Considering this is meant to be more action-RPG, I don’t mind.

  • Go2hell66

    so when’s FF XVI?

  • Michael Cortorreal

Now thats strange…I thought I saw a trailer some years ago that showed you could change the character mid battle (the blond guy with the guns…I think you could see some gameplay of him using skills and aiming and such)
hmm maybe the devs changed that in the course of the following years?
Well then again, this is to me like Kingdom Hearts, and I don’t mind to stick to a sole character in a game (to many examples out there in the gaming industry, seems futile to whine about such a small thing)

  • mfw when people are complaining about only playing as Noctis, but aren’t saying shit about Kingdom Hearts.

The Final Fant–no, the SE “fanbase” needs to stop being so damn entitled.

    • Ferrick

because it’s an FF game not KH, and FFType-0 had character switching on the fly?

      • And since when was it a golden rule that a Final Fantasy MUST have party/character switching. The fact that it’s a Final Fantasy game doesn’t mean it should always have character switching.

        see: Lightning Returns.

        • Ferrick

considering that it has been a thing since the very first FF till the last FF(12), maybe it wouldn’t be too much of an exaggeration to assume that it would stick throughout the series? And considering that Type-0’s characters has a wide array of abilities and the ones in Versus shown that they have their own abilities makes it a missed opportunity NOT to put character switching?

And Lightning returns? Really? Nobody liked that because A) you were stuck with lightning the entire game, B) The plot royally sucked.

          • Final Fantasy: Lightning Returns is still a Final Fantasy game, whether you liked it or not.

          • Ferrick

While true it will stay as a stain in the series, it still doesn’t mean that it is the new default for next FF games

          • No one said anything about it being the new default. What I am saying is that it’s happened before. Why not again? XD

          • Ferrick

Because it would and will be a missed opportunity to try out different fighting styles in this action based FF

          • Axel Villar

Doesnt seem many people liked it considering it sold like crap.

          • DivinePhoenix69

            >implying that sales actually represents the quality of the game as a whole.

        • Axel Villar

Lightning returns has a more complex fighting system. From what we know frmo the director´s mouth this action game is “one button instant gratification”. That doesnt sound really cool.

          • midgard229

kingdom hearts is one button, you do know that right?

          • Shadow Rebirth

i’m sure i can teleport and using multiple weapons on a fly using Prompto. *sarcasm*

    • Princess_Eevee9

Maybe cause character switching has been in the series for a long time?

    • zferolie

It’s not the norm is what people are saying. And the last 2 Kingdom hearts games gave you multiple Playable characters. (BBS with Aqua, Terra, and ventis and DDD with Sora and Riku). I am guessing in KH3 We will get Sora, Riku, and Kari. So citing KH as an example isn’t the best because it has been moving away from that.

And people are allowed to be upset by this. Why can’t they? Some people enjoy playing as multiple characters, and JRPG’s for the most part let you play as many different characters.

      • My initial comment might have sounded like people aren’t allowed to be upset by it. They are. They can be upset about.

But what I’m seeing from some comments are people bashing SE over the decision like it’s their god-given right to have party-switching. To me, it’s like: “Guys, it’s 2014. I THINK SE are allowed to move away from the norm a little bit no?” xD

EDIT: Also, while I somewhat agree with your point about Kingdom Hearts, at the end of the day there still isn’t any “character-switching”.

        • zferolie

Ok, I thought you were saying otherwise.

SE has every right to do what they want,, but we as consumers can call out about it. However we don’t have special privileges to force the game to be how we want it. They can and should take into consideration what their players say, but in the end it’s their work, and the creator can do what they want with their work, as is their right. It may be in their best interest to change things to please some people but if they don’t want to and feel strongly on their position, then they can go for it. Who knows, maybe this game will be fantastic how it is and the guys knew exactly what they were doing.

And maybe Character switching as the wrong word to use with Kingdom hearts. It’s more multiple playable characters, which this game does not have.

    • Axel Villar

I sure love “hold one button to advent children” system.

    • OathkeeperSoraXIII

Kingdom Hearts has always been that way though. Final Fantasy has not (except Lightning Returns, but that’s a sequel, not a mainline game). Nor was Versus XIII, the gameplay they showed back in 2011 showed changing playable characters.

People are more annoyed that they’ve taken something out of the game which was previously established to be in the game. I thought they were shifting to PS4 because of limitations the PS3 may have had. But now we’re actually having gameplay simplified and features taken out while not being told what’s actually new and being put in. Of course people are going to be angry.

  • CycloneFox

In its earlier build of Final Fantasy versus XIII from 2011, it was possible:

    http://youtu.be/YiIx9VJWSl8?t=4m21s

Wow the game looked way different back then.

    • It actually looks like a nicer game back then…

    • dboyz

wow previously Noctis looks way older

    • midgard229

the game looked good back then, but i think it looks a lot better now, minus the not being able to switch characters.

  • roockie112

that’s a little disappointing ,regardless I am getting the game Noctis AKA the sasuke of Final Fantasy lol.

  • Jero

I kinda thought it was the whole point of the battle system. Use noctis then change to the cute one or the other guy. They did it in type 0.

  • zferolie

While the gameplay sounds and looks very interesting as does the world, Still not being drawn in due to the characters. No females plus being forced to play as 1 guy I may end up disliking is a turn off for a JRPG for me.

I’m still going to follow the news of this and may change my mind, but right now not gonna get it.

Not sure how it’s too difficult to create a character switching mechanic though in an action JRPG. Tales of games have been doing it for years. But this does seem to be much different for tales, and maybe in the long run the game will be better(combat wise) with this decision.

    • Magicks

I personally don’t mind about the lack of a female character in the party. They all do the same thing; they assist the protag, and I’ll like them depending on their overall character. If these guys are really colourful, then I’d be more than happy to pick up the game. (Also, lol. Dudes on a road trip.) I still want to know what happened with Stella, and if Luna replaces her. :C

I don’t think I’ve played many JRPGs that swapped characters. And for the most part, I always stuck with the one because they usually have the smoothest gameplay. I think the only action JRPGs that I’ve played that you could swap characters has been Tales series, little bit of FF (like FF12), and the Star Ocean franchise.

      • zferolie

I do hope the cast is colorful and amusing. If so I won’t mind no female characters.

And I guess I meant more playable then swappable. it sounds like you only play as that one guy.

  • silverstory

FF XIII – main character dies, GO
XIII-2 – fixed it with the party leader but limited characters 2 + monsters (better)
LR – one and only character – darn

now this XV – seems like a mixed of previous FF games, main character + com controlled 2nd and 3rd character with paradigm shifts.

  • Wtv

Why people care about this? Every character looks the same.

    • They really don’t.

      • Tienron

wearing black clothes doesn’t invoke that they look the same….

    • Ferrick

Because from the way it was shown, different character plays differently? And now we are stuck with the spellblade?

      • Wtv

It’s easier just give more weapons to Noctis, then.

        • Ferrick

Noctis as gilgamesh (F/SN) confirmed :v

          • Noctimesh!

It’s time to fight like men and men that look like women!
            Noctimesh it’s Muffin Time!

    • Prompto wields swords? I guess I’ve been lying to myself all these years.

  • James Reilly

So pretty much will play like your standard KH game with no character switching on the fly.

  • dboyz

    RIP Final Fantasy…
    FF 1 – FF Type 0

    • zferolie

Say are they releasing type 0 over here as a digital, or did I hear that wrong?

      • Ferrick

        Physical

        • zferolie

Oh awesome. The little i saw of that game had me excited

      • dboyz

am not sure about it but if it’s digital only…
        RIVain Final Fantasy…..=)

  • Bojan Njegomir

Hype Down Potion! Seriously, with each new news i am feeling more and more dissapointed! :-/

  • Honestly, I didn’t care about playing as anyone else, only Noctis. But I know not everyone feels the same.

As for “hype” I wanna say I don’t have hype for this game, because it only leads to disappointment. I’m just excited to play it and patiently waiting for the release date. I know I’ll most likely enjoy it.

  • Tonton Ramos

Welp I’m transferring trains can I join KH3 Hype Train bandwagon?

  • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

A bit sad here.T_T FF series like in FF13, i almost never use Light there. I mostly uses Hope lol.

    • Shadow Rebirth

don’t know bout you, i play as Lightning and Hope & Fang as supporters all the way from Gran Pulse to the last boss(FF XIII). i’m sure i would the same with FF XV even if they implanted character-swap.

  • Suriel Cruz

Another reason this could be bad. I mean, Final Fantasy series is known for being a ‘Role Playing Game’ and they’re trying to much to make it an Action game. I’m still not going to lose hope and stil wish for a NICE good looking CLASSIC RPG for the PS4. *sigh* Why changing things, if they know it won’t be good for them?! Dx Noctis is a great character, but that is because I don’t really know the others, so as soon as I know them, OFCOURSE I want to play them…. anyways.

    • Kumiko Akimoto

I guess the rpg doesn’t count on the end of action rpg huh?

      • GreatKino

        Lol

      • Suriel Cruz

        I missed that detail. Damn!

    • Eilanzer

i rly don´t care if some game add action in my rpg lunch…but…
A good rpg and crap, a good FF must have a good story, good and deep characters and the fantasy feel (with a heart, like FFVI and FFIX)

A good example for me with a game that added action and was amazing is FF crisis core…that ending…that main chara…just amazing stuff.

  • FFmax

Yeah…making this into a mainline FF was a really bad idea on their part.

    • César H. Sandoval

It was their way of apologizing because the huge delay on the game, but yeah, you can clearly see this was always meant to be an spinoff.

    • Kumiko Akimoto

This is just what they needed to break people out of their “This is the only way a main FF can be” mindset, because it’s stupid.
FF fans can not be pleased there’s one half who wants change and another half that doesn’t want change.

    • GreatKino

I rather take this than the last 4 FF “mainline” games.

  • Altumn

    Hello Final Fantasy XIII

    • Jey

false. In FF13 you could switch controllable characters.
Unless you mean Lighting returns which only has lightning.. and that game sucked.

      • midgard229

came didnt even suck lol. your just trolling. was it the best ff game? no, but not bad at all

        • Jey

so if someone says something negative then they are considered trolls huh. Grow up.

The game WAS very weak with a very very weak story , graphics and characters.
Maybe the gameplay is its only saving grace. Also, my opinion and many others’.

          • mike dickson

your right Jey you also forgot to mention that the game is just all the side quest they wanted to put in all the 13 games all on 1 bloody disc glad i got my copy for 20$ i regret it a little less

          • midgard229

your just trolling yes. A game doesnt suck just because you dont like it, in your words, “Grow Up”

The graphics were good, show me a jrpg with better graphics, thanks.

the story was weak though you are right. but so was 9’s, 12’s and plenty of others

  • I see no problem with this really. Seems like it’s kinda early to pass judgement on it as well. From what the trailers have shown so far the game looks fun. It’s not that I’m against character switching, but that feature just wasn’t in Tabata’s vision for this game.

  • 하세요

As long as he has a bunch of things to do, then I’m okay with it. I don’t need to change my character to enjoy a game. Doesn’t stop me in TWEWY, Metroid, or Monster Hunter. Why should I care here.

    • Kroz

Exactly! give us super bosses, secret dungeons and some interesting side quests and you’ll forget your even playing as one character.

    • Gunbuster

Except this is FF, the point is to have a varied cast of characters with different skills. Only X-2 and XIII-2 differed on that.

      • Firekitty

You must be thinking of a different JRPG series, because the majority of FF games feature a cast that is, or can be made to be, functionally identical in battle, barring a unique skill or two and slightly different stats.

      • 하세요

Sounds like a personal problem. I played every FF title and I’m open to this idea as well. Best part about loving a series? Seeing it change and evolve, breaking the mold. If I want to play FF with an older system, then I’ll just go and play that older game.

      • Ahtma

“varied cast of characters with different skills.”
I guess I, II, III, V, VI, VII, VIII, and X all did it wrong, because I swear you can make every party member function the exact same if you build them right.

    • Firekitty

Precisely. I’m mildly disappointed I won’t be able to run around as the awesomeness that is Ignis, but as long as Noctis is reasonably versatile in battle, I’ll be happy.

Vagrant Story was still amazing with only one playable character.

  • César H. Sandoval

Still gonna wait for the demo beofre passing judgement.

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

I’m going to wait for the game to come out and see what their vision is in motion.

    • Loco4Divas

So you’re not going to keep up with developmental news?

      • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

        Is that what I said?

  • DivinePhoenix69

While the fact that the other characters won’t be playable anymore is indeed a bummer, it’s still something that i personally won’t lose sleep over. With this being the case now though i can see most of those resources going into giving Noctis a wider range of abilities/combat options, which i’m totally down for.

With that being said while i do understand why others are disappointed by this news, the amount of bitterness from these comments is astounding(though not suprising given the history of some of the commenters on this site). It’s like everytime an article gets posted on this game or any new FF game it’s always filled with butthurt comments nitpicking at the games over how it’s “not a traditional FF”, “wahh Lightning suks FU square enix”, or “Final Fantasy is dead, Tales is da best rpg evar!”. I swear this fanbase lol…

    • Ahtma

      They hate change, simple enough.

  • Nitraion

So salty but maybe they can add differ style i.e. differ weapon, class, playstyle so it will be more variation? I mean they pretty much say you will be stick in these 4 guys with 1 controlable leaders

  • kassandra

I have a feeling this game is gonna suck sooo! much!, just like the first final fantasy XIII did.

    • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Agreed. The game is not looking promising at this point.

  • Eilanzer

strange stuff…Even FF12 let you pick what main character you would use (and THAT alone saved the game for me *Balthier main all the way XD*)

So if you hate Noctis/Sasuke emoish style…gg…
This character need to be RLY good and SE have a history of piece of crap main characters…Almost ALL of them to be honest =.=”

    • zferolie

oh god if he is just like sasuke I will never buy this game.

And yay more love for 12. I loved 12. Second FF game I fully played through… well almost. I never could get that last hunt to show up… and it took me 3 hours to fight the etherial t-rex

And don’t even get me started on the final daggers for my one girl. I could never get them to drop…

    • Fainaru Luna

Is not even like Sasuke personality wise

    • DivinePhoenix69

      Uhwut…Noctis is NOTHING like Sasuke.

  • SMT

I don’t really mind, as long as the game is properly built around this… Noctis seems really varied in terms of playing style, switching weapons on the fly and etc.

It’ll probably be something more like Kingdom Hearts (You only really control one character, except BBS and 3D that had a different character for different sections, but the minor gameplay variations between characters can be just like changing a fighting style by changing a weapon), or Persona 3 where you only controlled your main character and the AI controlled the rest (Except the portable version that let you manually control them).

It can greatly help make them feel more like “friends” since they have a mind of their own and not just during cutscenes, and let the player truly see things as Noctis (Who probably fits the typical “sheltered” trope, unaware of much of the world so that we learn about the basics of the world along him, which actually works since the alternatives are either having really dumb characters having to explain stuff to characters that they should already know just because the audience needs an explanation, or what XIII did by keeping those explanations in the datalog and not explain during cutscenes since in-game characters already know the stuff that the audience needs explanation for), which can be a great narrative asset and so far it DOES look like what they are going for…

  • Tincho Kudos

Everytime I read something about this game I want the game even less

    • you’ll still buy it and be very salty about it later

      • Tincho Kudos

Well yeah I’m a sucker for Final Fantasy games, altough this time is very different since I have almost no hype for it and the ps4 here is WAAAAY to expensive (1000 dollars) So, this could be the first main FF I’ll skip

        • I’m just gonna wait for the bargain bin. This is probably the first time i’ve actually been looking more forward to western rpgs — at least i can play as a girl in those (WHO WOULDA THUNK IT)

  • Kroz

Well I am a little disappointed, mostly because I wanted to play as Prompto. But considering how much Noctis has going for him (warping and multi-weapon combat) I guess I can’t be upset.
I just hope the show us a more dynamic vertical combat situation. The E3 2013 trailer really got me hyped for warping from aircraft to aircraft striking enemies along the way.

  • Tiredman

Final Fantasy has lost its identity. I think Squeenix has had good luck with Kingdom Hearts and are trying way to hard to make other games more like that, at the detriment of what made the other game’s series special. Final Fantasy no longer fits in the same place in the dictionary that it did when FF 9 or 10 came out. Thats a shame, and a good bit of the reason that FF gets so much hate now. People want Final Fantasy, not Kingdom Hearts with a Final Fantasy skin.

    • Ahtma

Yeah, how dare they try something different.

    • I dunno man I played 10 for like six hours. It’s a snoozefest, everyone looks stupid and the story is so vague I have no idea what’s going on. I can see a direct path from that game to 13.

I played bravely default for the same amount of time and ringabel has yet to disguise his ignorance with how he got too close to some unexplained entity’s brain poisons.

      • Tiredman

I agree, it wasn’t the best FF, but it was an FF game. It had all the trappings of an FF game. It had a FF style battle system, optional content, and a normal FF style world full of areas to explore. I didn’t mind FF 10 too much, though I absolutely hate its optional content for the super weapons. I was never able to get some of them, and in my opinion, that is bad game design when an above average gamer can’t manage to do something in years..

I can see the single hallway syndrome in FF 10. But FF 12 was anything but single hallways.

        • I loved FF12. Who mentioned that un?

          • Tiredman

Just mentioned it since it did come between 10 and 13. Big fan of it myself, save for the last boss. Felt a bit underwhelmed first time I beat the game. But Gilgamesh made me forget my disappointment.

        • Ahtma

FFX did kind of have hallways, but after you got the airship the world basically reopened up and it actually felt worth looking around. Extra summons, scouting Blitzball players, looking for Celestial Weapons, finding Al Bhed primers… XIII had no such system in place, just keep moving forward with no volition to look back around the place you were at previously.

    • Kasimir Stalheim

How does a game lose it’s identity? Don’t the creators have rule over what makes their game…their game..?

Anyways, they’ve stated many times, that this game doesn’t play like Kingdom Hearts anymore, so I’m not sure where the Kingdom Hearts gameplay comments are coming from.

The only reason that it started out with a battle system similar to Kingdom Heart’s was because it was first being directed by the Nomura, the director of Kingdom Hearts. They’re not trying to mimic Kingdom Hearts at all, it was just easier for Nomura to do it that way, and he’d also draw in the same audience.

Nomura’s vision was for gameplay that could mimic cinema action scenes, in this case, Advent Children. Tabata has kept that vision, though has added elements to make it more similar to previous Final Fantasy, while still keeping it fast paced.

Im starting to praise Tabata more and more; he’s trying to juggle what the previous fans want, and also keep a vision that the previous director wanted. On top of that he’s trying to draw in another audience. We’re lucky he even addressed each of our concerns this week.

      • Tiredman

Sure, the creators have control, but as soon as their fans lose interest, they begin wondering why. In this case, they are trying to make FF a completely different game than it was prior to 13. And it has nothing to do with playing like Kingdom Hearts. I had an issue with KH 2 in that I loathed trying to kill things, getting stuck in a big, flashy move that i can’t get out of until its done, and then getting smacked down by a fast enemy. It is known as graphics over functionality. This is exactly what FF 15 looks like.

And I am not saying they are mimicking KH. I am saying they are trying to take too many games in the action direction instead of the normal rpg direction of FF’s roots. That is losing it’s identity.

As for what is kept in the game now that Nomura isn’t on the team anymore, who knows, will have to wait till it releases to figured that out. The main thing here though is that Tabata has a lot to prove. It isn’t the fan’s place to give up blind praise after being burned 3 times. It is Squeenix’s place to earn the fans back. So far, FF 15 doesn’t look like the game to do that. When people play it, then we will know. Until then, pessimism will rule.

        • Kasimir Stalheim

Honestly, I don’t see the leap in difference in the battle systems of FF13, and this one. Your party members are basically going to be set up with customized automated actions, making it similar to FF12. Yeah, it’s more action oriented, but It feels more like it’ll be more in the visuals, while the input is still keeping true to it’s basic roots of timed strategy. Though, I never thought the roots were in the battle system, but of course thats opinionated.

In regards to the comparison to KH2; It’s said that it does not play like Kingdom Hearts…at least not anymore. I know what you mean by the annoyances in KH’s battle system, but Tabata has stated in his most recent interviews that the battle system revolves around positioning and movement, where as in Kingdom hearts, you can get through the game without pressing any other button than X. In this aspect it reminds me more of games like Monster hunter, (despite them being completely different) they even said each enemy has different defenses and weak spots which interests me personally. It may not be keeping true to it’s turned based roots, but to it’s strategic ones; I’d say it looks like it.

I wouldn’t say Tabata has a lot to prove, it’s more like he has a lot that is expected of him, and those expectations can be unrealistic; especially since he is just incorporating someone else’s idea. Being that this game was first announced 8 years ago, everyone should have known it was going to be a bit more fast paced.

But I agree, there’s no way to really know how it’ll turn out, only one can speculate within their own viewpoint. I don’t think it can be lumped in with games like Kingdom hearts at this point, though it’s also too early to say it’ll be a “true” Final Fantasy.

  • harmonyworld

    I’m cool with that!

  • Jack Frazee

The last several stories I read about FFXV had me less and less interested, but this one I’m OK with. In FFXII for example, I never really liked switching characters; I just played as Vaan, and that was good for me. If this allows them to have even better party AI, that would be a good thing.

    • Loco4Divas

But in FFXII there wasn’t much of a difference between the 6 characters. They can use any weapons, magic and skill.

      • Firekitty

So can Noctis, apparently, unless that’s changed. It was said early on that Noctis will be a jack-of-all-trades type of charater; he’ll be able to do everything, just possibly not quite as well as the character that specializes in it.

        • Loco4Divas

I’m getting a Persona 3 vibe here lol

          • Firekitty

I never played that game due to an intense loathing for Atlus and their attitude towards certain parts of their fanbase, but if I understand correctly, the party aside from the main character was AI controlled, and the player could give the AI commands?

That’s a pretty common control scheme for A-RPGs (.Hack, Tales and Star Ocean all use something along those lines), so I could be perfectly happy with something like that. The trick is to make it deep, but not so much that you drive people crazy.

      • Wtv

Sometimes you want to choose to play with the character that you like more (almost never played with Vaan because of it).

I don’t think it matters in this game, though. Since everyone looks similar in some way and Noctis is already the more “cool” of them.

Some people may want to play with the Cloud Jr….or they can release a blonde hair to Noctis by DLC.

      • courier69

but those pretty limit breaks tho. (Quickenings LOL. what does that even mean?).

    • In 12 you rarely needed to control anyone

  • GreatKino

    Disappointed but oh well.

  • Where They At Doe

Welp, if FFXV fails, I guess Tabata is taking all the blame instead of Nomura

    • courier69

      all part of the plan…

  • CozyAndWarm

Man, that’s pretty restrictive. Since Xenoblade lets you switch characters OUTSIDE of battle I figured this article title might be misleading, but no, no character switching in FFXV at all? What kind of a JRPG are they even makin’ here?

    • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Even the much maligned FFXIII let you switch character outside battle. Now that says something about how disappointing FFXV is looking.

  • Nori Hiraoka

Just to highlight a few thing because some people are getting amnesia with the past interviews with nomura and some new stuffs

nomura’s original vision was to make noctis the only playable character – From nomura himself

Male Characters only – this was confirmed along time ago since it was Versus XIII from nomura himself

Everything you saw in E3 is in the game – Tabata Q & A

Auto Evade – Depletes your mana so you can’t evade all the time

    Certain Monsters/Attacks can’t be evaded – Tabata Q&A

Jump Confirmed – Tabata Q&A shown in 49:15

Double Jump?? – was confimed by nomura when it was still versus xiii since we have jump button for XV it could lead to a double jump as what nomura confirmed before

    Climbing on Monster Confirmed – Tabata Q & A / was also shown during E3 2013

    Cooperative moves and growth – co-op moves aren’t one-offs, you can do them continuous;y – Tabata Q&A

Parrying Concept – The Concept of ParryingTo connect a co-op move while avoiding an enemy attack, you have to keep an eye out for an indication when to invoke it It feels accomplishing to pull of a co-op attack from a parry.

    You can’t auto-parry. – Q&A Tabata

Pushing the attack button “only” will just give you a standard combo – Tabata Q&A

Performing Attack combos will be using the directional buttons to change the course of action meaning its not just a “single” button mash and can change during certain circumstances (counter attack etc etc) – Tabata Q&A

Phantom Blade(swords rotating) – Confirmed Tabata Q&A was also shown during E3 2013

Free run – Confirmed Tabata Q&A/ was also shown during E3 2013

Personally i think one the problems to make others playable is because of noctis teleportation which would be a hassle if everyone could use it since its his own power and it might ruin the story if everyone can just do that. and it might give frustration to the game gameplaywise if you need to climb /teleport to something or somewhere yet only noctis can do it because of his teleportation/warping

    • “Certain Monsters/Attacks can’t be evaded – Tabata Q&A”

Well that just sounds like crap. What kind of action RPG forces you to take damage? I guess whatever bizarre twisted mixture of action and turn-based they have brewing here. And I keep getting more and more disappointed the less and less this sounds like just a Kingdom Hearts reskin with Final Fantasy dudes.

      • Uncle Tat

It probably type of monster’s which require the player to attack it from far (by gun or spell), or get out of the range instead of dodging the attack.

        Action game element there.

      • Nori Hiraoka

they’ve said its a final fantasy with kingdom hearts gameplay.
        “kingdom hearts reskin final fantasy”
        whats the difference?

      • Naryl

I think they just mean u can’t auto-evade them. So you have to actually run away and manually evade it.

    • Ni ~Algidus~

      >nomura’s original vision was to make noctis the only playable character – From nomura himself

I need a source on this.
VSXIII cleary had switchable party members

      • Nori Hiraoka

im not sure if its ok to post links in here but it was an interview last E3 from famitsu

“I wanted to make an action-based Final Fantasy game. I toyed with the idea of switching to a first-person point of view and making Noctis the only playable character, and even getting rid of the UI completely. But that would have eliminated any resemblance it had to a Final Fantasy game.” – nomura

        http://squareportal.net/2013/06/20/new-final-fantasy-xv-details-and-interview/

btw since tabata confrimed “again” there is a jump button it could lead to a double jump(nomura confirmed when it was still versus XIII)

        • Ni ~Algidus~

I see. so my switchable party was screwed since the beggining at least he did think about it and the original VS had it.

  • Uncle Tat

    That is a dissapointment..

But hey, at least Noctics have access to various weapons, and he can cast spell based on the trailer and gameplay, and he can get into robots, so.. its not that bad.

Character is very limited, I hate this but I think I can get over it since the game still allow versatile playstyle, and to me gameplay is always number one, so..

Square Enix, you better make us play using Noctics worthwhile.

    • Loco4Divas

Square could always release a special edition later where we can control all characters in battle. its probably what they are planning lol

    • Aqua King

They don’t have a great track record of one player controlled FF games… Lightning Returns, Dirge of Cerberus (yeah, that was a thing in case people forgot). I don’t want to be adverse to change… but I’m not going to hold my breath thinking this game will be great.

      • Yoyitsu

        Crisis Core was good.

      • Ahtma

You can’t compare side games to the main games.

That being said, I enjoyed Dirge of Cerberus. Squeenix toyed with a different concept than what they usually do, and I felt it had more potential for something fun.

  • Vallen

Those scenes where Prompto was shooting things in the 2011 and E3 2013 trailer looked sick, why take it out :(

    • Loco4Divas

      I remember that too :(

    • RajaNaga

That isn’t taken out? Party members attacking with you is still a thing.

  • Loco4Divas

I get a very Persona 3 vibe here. In that game you could only control the main character while other characters were controlled by the AI. I’m sure Ignis, Prompto and Gladiolus will level up and learn abilities but we can’t command them completely like in Persona 3. Final Fantasy XV will probably have tactics options like focusing on healing, attacking and etc. I wouldn’t be surprise if Square Enix released a special edition version of FFXV later where we can control all characters and title it Final Fantasy XV: FES lol

    • Aqua King

Persona 3 had the option to turn the other player AI off.

      • courier69

P3P did. I don’t think the original had the option (never played it).

yeah, I’m betting for more character control as DLC or a final mix too. I mean, FFXII international allowed you to control summons. That’s not too far from what’s happening here.

        • Persona 1 and the 2’s had multiple playable characters, and 3’s future releases made the others playable, along with all subsequent persona games.

          people complained and atlus listened

    • Jirin

It worked for Persona 3 because your main character was basically twelve characters in one with all the different personas you could swap out per turn.

If FFXV has something like that, it will be fine. I somehow doubt it.

  • JustThisOne

I can’t say I really like it, but I’m definitely going to be open minded about this. It sounds like they really thought about this, and they designed around this aspect. Hopefully the final product won’t feel like something this missing, but instead will provide an fun experience that’s only possible with party structured this way.

  • UltimagaWeapon

LOL, Auto-evade, playable with only one button and now only 1 playable character. What’s next? “No townz” meme?
Not surprising since KHII was a disappointment compared to KH1 and COM. Wonder how the staff changed between KH1 and KH2.

    • no they traded female characters for towns it’s cool

  • JehutyV2

Well, I can’t say i’m fond of the idea of being restricted to one character, but I suppose it makes sense in a way. Really, the one thing i’m more concerned about right now is the world exploration…aside from this “vast expansive world” they keep going on about I want to know if towns are traversable as well. Nothing like FF XIII either where you just run right through them never to return or they’re under fire. It just adds to the interactivity of a fictional world. I miss them…

  • Eduardo Viviani

I want to play the 2011 featured game.
“While Square Enix decided not to include character-switching due to complications…”

    what a crappy excuse ¬¬

    • courier69

Hey, it works for Nintendo. used it for justification of N3DS, not using the CPP in smash bros/kid icarus (the right way, damn left-handed-ists…), and why they split zelda and samus.

  • H_Floyd

Anyone who defends this is an apologist.

    Complications? Come on.

    • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

      So true.

  • James Todd

if noctics uses multiple weapons dose that make him a freelancer

  • Steven Higgins

If Noctis can use a variety of weapons and Magic, what’s the big deal if he’s the only playable character? It still allows for different attacks, which is the main point of switching characters. At leas it’s not Like LR where Light was not just the only playablele character, but didn’t even have a party.

    • courier69

It just feels weird. I mean RPG means ROLE playing game. It makes it harder to imagine yourself in the role of your favorite character when you are limited to playing as only one person.

FF’s history makes it weirder as well. All the other numbered games give you the option to play as other characters, who are normally just as fleshed out as the main hero.

As a huge DMC/KH fan, I don’t mind it, but it does feel like XV is getting closer to a action game than an RPG…

      • Steven Higgins

Well, traditionally, RPGs allow you to name the character as well, but in FF that stopped with XII

    • generally people like RPGs because there are several characters interacting in a story that you can either create yourself (typical of one player character games) or select one you like. That’s why the “no females” was an issue. People like playing as girls. If you don’t like the main character you’re not going to like playing as him.
LR was a spinoff. Main FF games usually have hella characters.

      • Steven Higgins

True, but this was originally supposed to be a spin-off as well. With that in mind it makes perfect sense for it to only have one playable character because changing that would require going in and re-coding stuff, which would only extend development time and farther alienate the already annoyed fan base. I actually feel bad for square because they are trapped in a unwinnable situation with this game as everything they announce just pisses the fans off and if they try to change what the fans don’t like they have to take more time developing the game which also pisses them off. It’seems a lose-lose for Square because of the modern “we want everything and we want it right now” mentality. They’re working really hard on this as are being completely unappreaciated. They aren’t machines after all. I’m not saying you’re like that, there just seem to be a lot of people who are.

  • mike dickson

Tabata just leave the director seat your a huge bad luck charm

  • Callonia

Why? In FF7, you could use all the characters. Whats so complicated?

    • I hope this is a troll comment.

    • midgard229

you cant be that stupid. your going to compare turn based Simple one attack animations too an action rpg with an open world and AI……

  • Hakai Ouji Vegeta #BADMAN

            lol

    • Enma_Kozato

An additional 8 years per character made playable (‘0’)/

  • Gessekai

Guys if you you’re so upset about it, just go sign a petition. Complaining won’t do shit. Currently there is a Japanese one trying to change this.

    http://www.change.org/p/square-enix-finalfantasy15の仕様変更?utm_source=petition_update&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=petition_update_email

    • Symbol de Au

Petitioning and complaining are the same thing man. Neither is more useful than the other either.

      • Gessekai

No, I would say there’s a big difference. Petitions are recognized, complaining on a comments section isn’t, at least in most cases. Tabata recognized the petition to bring Type-0 to America. Im sure he’d acknowledge another one, since he’s open to feedback.

        • Petitions don’t do anything. Just don’t buy it.

          • which, actually won’t change anything. People will just buy anything. That’s why we got three FF13s. Gamers are kind of just an easy cash market. That’s why developers don’t really take too much of what anyone says to heart. They could make Noctis half-chocobo and it would still sell 100,000 units.

          • casekins

I think a half-chocobo Noctis would be the only reason needed to buy this game.

          • Eriq-Christian Deshaun Beard

or maybe we are open minded and not so much stuck up the ass

          • Gessekai

I feel like you’d have to take advantage of the director at this point. If you listened to his interview he addressed every problem immediately and individually. He said something along the lines of “No character changing in it’s current state.”, meaning if it’s a big deal they might do something about it. He’s bringing type-0 to the US because of petitions and demands, I’m sure he’d do a simple change for this game.

  • Evan Groman

Man KHII was such a terrible game, remember that game? despite having a party, there was only one playable character, and he’s a male, and there’s no female party members! the game only had one attack button! man what a terrible game

you people are all hypocrites. they said from day one that this game would have gameplay akin to the KH series, and that’s exactly what you got.

    • Arvin Jay

Hey you got to play Roxas or Mickey or even Riku.

      • Evan Groman

If you’re counting the way Riku was playable, then you should be happy, because that’s exactly how the party is playable in FFXV. Events where you borrow the party member for one or two moves, etc.

    • FFmax

People didn’t expect there to be no other playable characters, especially after seeing the older trailers.

      • Evan Groman

Especially after seeing the older trailers?

All of the cinematic trailers this game had consisted of nothing but Noctis being a badass and cutting stuff up. What trailer implied a playable party?

        • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

The January 2011 trailer which shows the first in-game footage. That trailer had the entire party playable and leader switching mid-battle. Also, when you played as Prompto, the game switched to a TPS perspective like Resident Evil 4.

You can see the January 2011 trailer here:

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiIx9VJWSl8

          • Nori Hiraoka

i think one of the reason they took off the character switching is because of the warping/teleportation.
noctis is the only one who can teleport from the story its his own ability so it would ruin the story if everyone can just teleport while on gameplay what if you need to warp or teleport yet only noctis can do it and u dont have him the party or youre not controllong him its gonna be a hassle im sure warping is huge role in this game so kinda ruins the gameplay as u can see there was no warping or teleportation on the 2011 trailer

          • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

When the January 2011 trailer was released, Nomura said in Famitsu interview that all party members are playable, but they each have unique gameplay styles. Noctis is the only one that can warp, while Prompto is played in a TPS manner.

The current FFXV has all Nomura’s ideas for the other playable characters completely removed. It’s very disappointing.

          • Nori Hiraoka

i know but as you can see during 2011 trailer noctis is not warping/ teleporting thru buildings to buildings like he is today in 2014. in 2011 he is only teleporting(speed increase) when he is attacking. get my point? i mean since they added the “feature” that noctis can warp/teleport/leap “”thru buildings”” it kinda ruins the gameplay if youre not going to main him it will be frustrating if you keep switching characters when mostly likely you will need to teleport all the time since he is the only one who can use this ability(story wise and gameplay wise) what if you need to climb a tower or like the scene when the leviathan attack where you need to teleport houses to houses or teleport on an airship. get my point? watch the 2011 trailer you will not see noctis teleporting thru towers/buildings/airships. i understand what youre saying but even for me when i think about it is kinda hard to add a feature to all of them being playable imagine how would the others teleport or climb thru things like noctis in a fast way like him.

          • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Noctis could teleport and warp around back in 2011, but Nomura told Famitsu he chose not to show it in the January 2011 trailer. Warping was always Noctis’ unique gameplay, even as far back as the first trailer back in E3 2006. Other characters had their own unique gameplay, such as Prompto being played in a TPS like Resident Evil 4.

The game we’re now getting only has Noctis playable, with all the other unique gameplay for other characters being removed. I don’t see how you can’t see why that’s disappointing.

          • Nori Hiraoka

I am disappointed but not that much,
source from the interview? I only heared that from nomura during E3 “2013”from squareenix present. That trailer was a cgi trailer not a gameplay big difference look at the new titan fall cgi trailer some elements/features that was shown there wasnt in the game from what i heard just an example. Yeah already saw prompto playable but that doesnt answer the gameplay design problem and feature they added how will they be able to leap places to places immediately in certain events like the leviathan attack? Theres too much design problems to be answered

    • Symbol de Au

Not surprising since KHII was a disappointment compared to KH1 and COM. Wonder how the staff changed between KH1 and KH2.~UltimagaWeapon(earlier comment here)

Not all hypocrites some didn’t even play that game and some of them don’t like that one either.

      • Rohan Viajar

        I like Kingdom Hearts 2.

      • Evan Groman

They’re hypocrites because they were super happy when the game was first announced and we were told it would have KH gameplay, and now they’re pissed because hey, look, it has KH gameplay.

      • Ahtma

“KH2 was a disappointment compared to KH1 and COM.” Did you literally, /seriously/ just say that? KH1 is the worst of the series. KH2 improved upon KH1 in every way imaginable, by changing the combat to something that doesn’t get old fast, improving the gameplay flow in general, adding skippable cutscenes, adding /better/ cutscenes, adding Reaction Commands, improving the Gummi ship segments, making worlds actually worth playing, etc.

        • Symbol de Au

I was quoting someone from an earlier comment. I haven’t played Kingdom Hearts 1 or 2.

    • KH =/= Final Fantasy
they’re not the same series and different things are expected of them.

      • Evan Groman

The game was said to have the same gameplay as the KH series FROM THE SECOND IT WAS ANNOUNCED.

If you weren’t “expecting that of it”, well, you were expecting the wrong thing. Because they very plainly told you that’s what you’re going to get.

        • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Yet, Nomura, who was the original director, promised the very day the game was announced at E3 2006 as VersusXIII that all party members would be playable, despite it using a KH-style battle system. He even added that it wouldn’t be a FF game if you could only play as one character.

Now the game is FFXV, a mainline FF game, and you can’t even play as any other character? This game has completely gone to shit. It’s dead on arrival at this point.

          • ClaudiusWhite

“This game has completely gone to shit. It’s dead on arrival at this point.”

Wow…overdramatic much? It’s astonishing that the inability to switch characters would invoke such a response.

          • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Excuse my hyperbole. I am very disappointed in what this game has become.

          • ClaudiusWhite

Yeah I get that…just have to keep in mind that not everyone feels the same way about it. There are people (including myself) that don’t care at all about not being able to switch characters.

          • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Each to their own, but you have to remember that Nomura originally promised us we could play as all characters and that Prompto would even play in a TPS fashion. You can see all this in the January 2011 trailer. The current FFXV under Tabata has removed all that.

          • Symbol de Au

“just have to keep in mind that not everyone feels the same way about it”

No, you really don’t. I don’t give a carp how everyone else feels about it. There wouldn’t be any reason for me to care either.

          • ClaudiusWhite

Where in my post did I say you have to care what other people think? I simply asked to be aware of it, so someone doesn’t make a comment that makes themselves look ignorant.

        • woah hold up buddy DON’T YOU CAPSLOCK AT ME

i was merely stating that KH and FF were not similar entities so if someone was miffed about FF being too KH like, that is the explanation. Whether they said it would be KH like or not, it’s still in the MAIN final fantasy franchise. CALM YOURSELF.

    • Hector Velar

I like your optimism, will see once it is released and most reviewers give this game a 5/10 maybe 7/10 at best, then you will know why KH is a 10/10. Trust me this game will get a mediocre score at best, I’m going to save this link so when you make your smarty pants remark defending this game I can go back to it and say “TOLD YOU SO!”. But you don’t care about that, you have your mind set.

      • Evan Groman

I have my mind set? What? We know nothing about this game. What do you know about this game exactly that guarantees itll be 7/10?

at this point it could be 10/10 or 0/10, we dont know anywhere near enough.

  • Jirin

You can’t even swap your lead character?

That probably means you have even less control over your allies than Xenoblade, doens’t it?

Enthusiasm dropping. Square proves they have no idea why people used to love them.

  • Karez

So this trailer as a liar!
    Thx Obama…i mean…Nomura
    http://youtu.be/vkZvdT3QS4k?t=3m33s

  • well.

  • SnowVilliers

So… this is like the “DmC” version of Final Fantasy where everything has gone sh*t.

    • ehtnah

no, actually, I think DmC will be better than that…..

  • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Even the much maligned FFXIII let you switch character outside battle. Now that says more than enough about how disappointing FFXV is looking.

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

After reading Nomura’s recent interview. This is my conclusion :

So, Nomura is basically like a teenager who finds dark and edgy things to be “badass” and claim that he likes it. But in truth he is actually soft in the inside and it shows in how his story is mainly about shonen-like friendship, brotherhood, andLolNoOneActuallyDies.

    At least that’s how i see it….

Even FFXV that’s claimed to be “dark” still doesn’t really look like it.

  • Renzo-senpai

That Tabata dude need a Slap in the face. Does everything complicate this guy?

Just for the record: He is the guy that say that the will be no Multiplayer in Type-0 HD right? I’m confused :/

    • chestnutrose

Dude, Type-0 has maximum control over more than a dozen characters. Now you’re gonna complain about no Multiplayer? I thought your issue was party control.

  • mike

I guess all you haters never played FF7CC

  • Jirin

I can imagine the board meeting at Square Enix.

“We’re in trouble here, people are losing interest in our games. We need FFXV to be our most successful game ever.”
Tabata: “We need to give the gamers what they like. If there’s one thing gamers hate, it’s having control over the way you play the game.”
Nomura: “I agree. People didn’t love older Final Fantasy games because of the customizable options in battle or the likable characterization. They loved seeing big graphical flashes in their face every five minutes and non-stop movement! And zippers, they also love zippers!”
Tabata: “Right. So we put as much action on screen as possible with as little gamer control as possible.”
Nomura: “This will be our most popular Final Fantasy ever!”

    • Ric Vazquez

      You made my day LOL

  • AndyLC

Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core had only one playable character (and no side characters), I was initially disappointed but once it was actually in my hands it became my favorite FF title.

    • not a main title tho
      plus a handheld game
      it’s fundamentally and structurally different.

  • Hiro

I really wonder why you guys at SiliconEra didn’t even mention the 押しっぱ問題 (hold X to attack/button-problem) they talk about so much in the video. Tabata said it’s not just ‘hold X to win’. It takes MP to evade like that, it will get you killed if you think that way (his words). He repeats lot of times that it will be an Action RPG with actual, FF-like tactics, so even casuals looking to pick this up will have to learn to fight better gradually. Many have mentoned the Win-button problem, he reassures time and time again that it is not as simply as it sounds. I think that is the main subject of this video (along with the Noctis-only thing).

  • Eriq-Christian Deshaun Beard

People have to understand, when you played the turned based games you had control over the whole party, but how much control. in final fantasy’s case, 7-9 you could only really control there actions and that was only in battle. the only other time you acknowledge they were there was cutscenes. ff 10 you could switch out your whole party but you could still only really controlled tidus apart from a moment in the game. The thing about most of these action games and ff 15 in particular is you may be able to control one person but at least that one person is given a lot of mobility. and if we are going to be mad that we wanted it to be like kingdom hearts or mad that it is like kingdom hearts, you still only really controlled one character at a time. its not like you were able to control donald and goofy so just wait until the demo comes out to see how everything works in action. we should be happy that we are getting one

    • Jiff

Touche. Still, if we’re bringing in the argument that the previous FF games only had control over one character, we also have to take into account the fact that this is a new generation of game systems with new hardware. How are they pushing the limits of the new systems while we’re still using the frameworks of games from previous systems that contained inferior parts?

      • Eriq-Christian Deshaun Beard

can’t say, i am not a programmer. all i know is that there are multiple parts to a game that take up space

      • Nori Hiraoka

Game design is the problem if all of them are playable imagine how would the others climb or leap buildings to buildings as fast as noctis especially in certain situations like the leviathan attack when the story indicates its only noctis who can teleport it would ruin the story if all of them are teleporting. As well as it would be frustrating to keep on switching characters all the time PS during 2011 noctis is was not teleporting buildings to buildings towers to towers unlike today.

      • Eriq-Christian Deshaun Beard

i also want to point how that…the leviathan attack is a clear example of how they are pushing the limits of the system

  • Ric Vazquez

Damnit SE! Why are you screwing the franchise’s biggest chance of redemption, we have waited 8 years for this, you guys used to be my favorite game company, not anymore, end of rant *hyperventilates and sigh*

  • Alter

haters gonna hate. i don’t care how it ends up because i’ll play it no matter what.

  • Kasimir Stalheim

People are going to complain no matter what. Get character switching, people will complain about the lack of girl characters. Get girl characters, people will complain about the battle system. Make the battle system the way everyone wants it, complain that it’s too modern looking. Game ends up being exactly the same as FF1, and then we have the definition of insanity.

  • Michieie

    Meme got approval of god.

  • Ronldbx6

    two thumbs up for gameplay.
