Terra Battle, Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Latest Game, Launches On October 9

By Spencer . October 3, 2014 . 1:31pm

Mistwalker, the studio behind The Last Story, is going back to iOS for their next game. Terra Battle is a tactical role playing game where players lead warriors on a quest to discover who The Maker is. Instead of walking range, units in Terra Battle can move freely, but you only have four seconds to drag them around on the screen. Siliconera met with Mistwalker founder Hironobu Sakaguchi to talk about creating Terra Battle.

Terra Battle will be released as a free to play game for iOS and Android on October 9 in the West. Mistwalker will add more content to Terra Battle and perhaps add a Bearded Sakaguchi character as a boss if the mobile release gets enough downloads. It’s part of their "download starter" campaign with a console version as the biggest reward, if Terra Battle nets two million downloads.

*__* I’ve been playing it for the past couple days, and I really enjoy it. I’ve kind of got a “catch ’em all” attitude towards it. I hope it becomes successful during it’s official launch! :>

  • WatchGintama

I’ve been waiting for this. I needed a new mobile game ever since I quit PAD.

Gameplay looks fun and the art is very nice.

    • Schiller

      What is pad?

  • Yaro

Really wouldnt mind having this kind of game on Vita…

Whooosh. If it gets popular enough, maybe it will. They’re considering console development at the very bottom. Which one though, hm hm. That’s up in the air.

    • WatchGintama

Console version is coming if there are 2 million downloads.

      • HarakiriKami

Thats an MMO not the actual game

  • Kaetsu

It’s been out here in Canada for a while now O_O

    • KiTA

      As a test, yes.

  • Souffrir

Maybe I missed it somewhere in the article, but is there any word on how much this’ll cost?

    • Free to play but with… ya know… stuff to buy in the game… probably a timer, etc.

  • fool

Been playing it in Canada for the last month and unless they completely rebalance the game…well its economy is totally broken and no one is going to spend any money ever.

    • Pekola

Can you please expand on this?

      • fool

Terra Battle is a FTP game. There are two “energy” systems in it: Stamina and Energy.

Stamina is needed to play a level. It recharges a point every few minutes. Every time you clear a chapter (can be as long as 10 levels), your Stamina bar both refills and expands. You can also spend one Energy to refill Stamina. You will get bored before you ever run out of Stamina.

Energy is what costs real money. You can use it to basically cheat by reviving during a battle if you die. Most importantly, you need 5 Energy to randomly recruit one of the many beautifully designed characters they’ve been posting art of. It is ridiculously expensive. (1 Energy costs $0.99; 6 costs $5.99; 100 costs $59.99. It gets cheaper the more you buy.)
However, you may also receive it from opening the game once a day. I think I get roughly 5 a week just from opening the game.

Basically, the only use for Energy is to recruit characters. There’s no way anyone would spend $5 for a random chance to end up someone lame or even a duplicate.

Not only is the economy broken, the game balance is broken too. But I’ve written too much already… It’s too easy and boring basically.

        • Mnstrzero00

But if you have 4 or 3 energy I could see spending a couple bucks for a chance.

          • fool

The incentive is way too low. Aside from the character being random, it also comes unlevelled. Add to that the fact that you can make do with what you have already, and maybe tomorrow you’ll get another 2 energy, I can’t see anyone paying up.

        • Lemon

My sentiments exactly. I got bored after getting to chapter 7 or 8. Not to mention the way the story is told sometimes one line at a time doesn’t help to keep me interested at all. I agree the system for recruiting new characters is terrible as well. I think I got around 15 energy and when I spent them, the characters I got – I never bothered to use them at all because their designs didn’t appeal to me, and it didn’t help that their abilities weren’t that great either.

I think what’s worst is that when you do get lucky and get a character you like, they start at level 1 and, assuming you are pretty far in the story already, you have to waste time getting them up to the same level as the rest of your current team and work on unlocking their other abilities or they become worthless.

The ‘job system’ is ridiculously lame as well because of the items that are required to be able to unlock one job. Then, you still have to level any new jobs from level 1!!!

          A real shame.

          • fool

Yep I’m stalled at 8 also. The Metal Zones are totally broken too and with the stupid levelling system you basically have to abuse it, which also makes the game way too easy.

Yeah the story starts out…ok. Visual novelly text dumps. Then the chapters get longer and it’s kinda hilarious as the text becomes one line variations of “We pressed on deeper. Monsters kept attacking.”

        • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

Thanks for the description. If this is the way that the game plays, especially with recruitment, then I have no interest in it.

          • fool

I do recommend everyone download it anyways (it’s free) because I do find the core gameplay interesting/weird/broken. Upon reflection, The Last Story was also interesting/weird/broken. If they hit 2 million downloads they’re turning it into a “real” console game. Maybe it’s their marketing plan to release a free-to-play that is way too free and not very play.

    • I wasn’t planning to spend any money anyway.

  • Kornelious

Huh, I didn’t realize this was releasing for the U.S! I thought it was only in japan O_O…..If it’s on Android I might just pick it up to show my support :)

  • Won’t be Last Story, but however/whatever it is, I hope it’s good!

  • I tried to google for reviews since this has apparently been out elsewhere for a while, but all I got was crap about some stupid movie called Battle for Terra.

    • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

I actually enjoyed Battle for Terra. Reminded me of an animated Avatar (James Cameron movie)

      • Avatar was live action? I haven’t seen either; I was just annoyed at Google. :)

  • Eric

Reading the comments about the game economy, I feel a little worried, but I guess I will see for myself. Perhaps, (and perhaps unlikely) they will have made changes for the release on october 9. I was really intrigued by the game especially after listening to the song on the officia home page of the website. It’s really quite beautiful.

I’m also a big sucker for the download stretch goals they have added. Especially the 1 million mark which starts production on animated battle.

  • UltimagaWeapon

It’s out? I though it was 4 more days.
At least the music is better than Blue Dragon. Will give it a try, already used to Pazudora economy so…

  • I might end up picking it up. It doesn’t look that bad.
