Senran Kagura: Estival Versus is set on a heavenly resort-like island, where the the Asuka and others will take on hundreds of enemies on the beaches. While we don’t know too much about the story, the game’s official website gives us a clue in poetic fashion.

The fate of a ninja is the fate of death. Born from the shadows, then dispersed into the shadows.

A ninja’s life is short-lived. A ninja’s life is unrequited. An unnamed flower, known by nobody.

What do the ninjas’ souls that drift into this world think? Are their hearts filled with regret? Regrets for those they left behind? Or…

This is the start of a story about a festival to appease the soul of the ninja… a record of the banquet of requiem. By the end of this banquet, what will the young ninja students see? What will they feel? And what will make them cry?

“… s-sister?”

“Hehe, it’s been a while.”

… that will never be forgotten.

That could never be forgotten… the start of the eight days that went by like a flash.

Check our earlier report to get a first look at the three new characters Renka, Hanabi, and Kufuru, who happen to be sisters and will be playable in the game.

Senran Kagura: Estival Versus will release in Japan on March 26, 2015 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.

I was expecting that this poem was all about the PLOT.

    • Altin

You know the rule: Show, don’t tell.

  • Blati. Boyu.

Don’t really care about the fanservice, but I love the gameplay of this series. Can’t wait.

    • Sion12

      SURE

      i kid i kid

    • TheCynicalReaper

I love the fanservice because it helps make this series such a good parody. The writing also lends itself well to being a parody while also having an identity of its own.

And yeah, the gameplay is great and the super moves are sick

      • Wtv

SK uses a lot of tropes from shounen works…and actually do a lot of them better than a lot of shows. I don’t know if I would call SK a parody, though…yeah, the fanservice is over the top, so it looks like one…but it’s Japan. Queen’s Blade is even more absurd and I don’t think people buy it as a parody.

But yeah, it has likeable characters, a good yet simple script and good gameplay and action…so it’s kind of sad when fanservice is everything people see about it.

        • TheCynicalReaper

I agree about how SK uses the tropes really well, but the reason I say this is meant to be at least partially parody is because of how Kenichirō Takaki talks about breasts in general, especially in regards to Senran Kagura.

He has such an almost innocent, playful way of talking about them that it demystifies the sexuality in the fanservice and just makes it fun. If the fanservice’s job is Fun 1st, Titillation 2nd, then I can’t imagine how that doesn’t lend itself to parody.

Not that Senran Kagura is JUST a parody. It has some surprisingly touching and even anxious moments, and it is well written with a great cast. It’s just that I think SK is what a proper parody should be: a fun mockery of popular conventions while keeping an identity all its own.

        • TheCynicalReaper

As for: “it’s kind of sad when fanservice is everything people see about it.”
We just need to ignore the short-sighted jerks and promote our appreciation to the devs & publishers.
__I’ve taken to showing the niche games I’ve bought on twitter to the directors of the games, even if they don’t speak English.

Siliconera’s taught me that XSEED & even English speaking Japanese devs actually care what we think. Yoko Taro certainly does.

When I get my copy of Shinovi Versus, I’ll be sending a pic to XSEED’s and Kenichirō Takaki’s twitters. You could do that too if you’d like. We all should!

    • ShadowDivz

I care about the fan service AND i love the characters. The gameplay and story are something i love too….
I basically just love the franchise.

“The fate of a ninja is the fate of death.”
Not here. Nobody dies in Senran Kagura.

    • TheCynicalReaper

Well to be fair, some ninja DO die, but their either fodder or in text.
      Good point, though. haha

    • Kumiko Akimoto

Well there’s also a fear of death and a lot of the girls have had important family members or something other then that die.

    • Wtv

They do if they don’t have a character design. The three “dogs” from Haruka can prove that.

  • TheCynicalReaper

I’m eager to play this! Thanks for the article, guys!

  • Kornelious

……Is it just me or are there breasts getting BIGGER each game? :P
