Tales Of The World: Reve Unitia Has 3DS Themes As A Preorder Bonus

By Spencer . October 14, 2014 . 10:30pm

A system update just added themes to Nintendo 3DS and Bandai Namco already has a set of themes planned for Tales of the World: Reve Unitia. First print copies of the 3DS strategy RPG includes a download code which can be redeemed for seven themes.

Here’s an example of the red theme which has Luke, Asbel, and Zelos on it.

I’d like to hope this is a sign of more Tales games to come on Nintendo hardware.

    • Kitsune

No no no no… absolutely no. I will not accept them to change hardware now, and specially to a 3DS, the resolution on those screens is so unbearable, there’s no reason to downgrade Tales games to that level.

And just for anyone thinking this is some console war opinion, it’s not, I simply do not wish for them to downgrade their quality and force people with no interested in Nintendo to buy a console with a painful hardware and even worse software. (I own a 3DS XL, I know what I am talking about.)

Once more, not trying to start an arguement here despite the rant, just compressing my opinions and thoughts to one post so I don’t need to answer any replies.

Technically speaking, all of the portable Tales (IIRC, with the exception of the Abyss remake and some crossover games) originated on the DS/3DS.

I get that people generally consider Tales to be a Sony franchise (and I probably would, too, honestly), but there have been more Tales games on Nintendo systems than people often realize.

        • Ladius

I think things are a bit more complicated, especially considering how many handheld Tales games have been released over the years. NDS is definitely in a unique position, since it had the only two original handheld mothership Tales games, plus an escort title that was originally meant as a mothership. 3DS so far has got a porting of a PS2 mothership and this updated port of a smartphone crossover, and had a promising start considering Abyss’ porting sold better than both R remakes on Vita.

That said, PSP was definitely more supported as far as Tales games went: it had four mothership ports (Phantasia FVE, Eternia, Destiny 2, Rebirth), a remake of Narikiri Dungeon (which also included the best version of Phantasia with new contents, Phantasia Cross), the three Radiant Mythology games, Twin Brave and Versus, making it the console with most Tales crossovers and, overall, the handheld with most Tales games on it. Previously, GBA was in a somewhat similar position regarding ports and spin-offs, with two of the three Narikiri Dungeon games (the first was on GBC), Summoner’s Lineage and Phantasia’s first handheld port.

Vita had quite a nice start with the remakes of the NDS motherships, but they ended up having some of the series’ weakest sales performances, and that’s probably why they took a break to reconsider their strategy. Tempest R had been teased in the past and yet it’s never been mentioned since then, and Reve Unitia is likely a way to try to see if 3DS is a viable platform for Tales spin-offs.

          • I hope they actually consider allowing Dimps to do a Tempest remake on 3DS, considering they worked on 4 3DS games already together, so they know the hardware. 7th Chord did the Vita remakes. I find that funny as Innocence on DS was by Alfa System.

          • Are there any theories for the two R games not selling well on Vita in Japan? Released too early in the system’s life? If the PSP games were popular, it seems the fans from those would enjoy the Vita titles.

I see both games having “The Best” versions in Japan though, which usually means they sold pretty well, right? Or was that still not enough for Namco to make anything more?

I felt the same when it got locked up to Sony only.
Especially being a Tales fan introduced through Symphonia.

      • Spirit Macardi

And exactly what’s the downgrade? Being on a more popular handheld with decent graphics that has already proven itself as a healthy platform for RPGs? Oh, how horrible.

Especially love how you claim this isn’t about the console war and then proceed to spout “facts” without any evidence to back them up. Yeah, totally not the sign of a console fanboy :B

      • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Holy shit dude. I don’t even like Tales that much but even I found everything you said here a tad overtop/ridiculous. There’s nothing wrong with choosing the more popular platform and introducing more people to a series. It’s just one giant cross promotion.
And the fact you label “It’s not about console war, but by the way, I won’t respond to replies because I know it’s about console war”
        Dood. -_-

    • Wappuli

eh, please no, atleast not any non-port mothership titles.

    • AuraGuyChris

Just for them to get remastered in a Sony platform? Oh no.

    • FTM

God, I hope that doesn’t happen. Namco may be making a powerplay with localizing the Tales series currently, but that hasn’t been the case for a long time, and there is absolutely no guarantee that they’ll pursue localizing Tales if they find even the littlest bit of red in costs.

So please— keep making Tales for systems that are consumer-friendly and not region-locked. If Nintendo were to ever get with the times and bust their region lock then whatever— but we all know that’s not going to happen.

  • Nan

    !!! I’m so jealous!

  • ν•˜μ„Έμš”

A little too busy for my tastes, but I’m sure others will disagree. Let me know when there’s a Taiko no Tatsujin or TWEWY one.

  • fyi1191

Judging from the red theme. I think the blue theme would be my choice. I just know it.

    • Most of your favs blue-haired/themed~?

  • awat

    Localize TotW:RU please, Namco Baba ! pretty please US/EU release 2015 !

  • I guess we’ll be seeing more themed pre-orders then the usual in-game DLC’s in future 3DS games…

But hey, this Tales theme looks cool though!

  • DudeJericho

    Cool, that looks pretty good.

  • phayroent

Well, kiss decent pre-order bonuses goodbye.

    • British_Otaku

Japan still loves limited editions and preorder bonuses (often attached to stores). It isn’t like the PS3 doesn’t have decent preorder bonuses just because the system supports themes.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

wow your an mod now? congrats…oh and I agree

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    thats neat

  • You forgot to name the two most important characters there~. >uO
    (Ahem, Reid and Rubia.)

    I really wish this game would get localized and that the themes would come here. ;u;
    Hoping against all odds. β™₯

Also hoping that purple has Meredy and green has Farah and Philia.

    • Giordan

Don’t hold your breath as the last ToW game was panned.

  • Zoozbuh

That theme looks gorgeous. More Tales action on 3DS would be AWESOME, so I really hope this gets localised. If we get these themes, that’d be even better. Pleaaase Namco.

    • Giordan

it has no chance as the last two escort titles performed poorly.
