Konami Is Still Making New Yu-Gi-Oh Games For PSP

By Spencer . October 17, 2014 . 1:29am

yugioh PSP titles are still trickling out in Japan, but the majority of them are otome games. While most publishers have moved on, Konami still supports the system with games like PowerPros Baseball and a new Yu-Gi-Oh! game.

Jump announced Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V Tag Force Special for PSP. The game contains over 7,000 cards including cards from the Secrets of Eternity booster pack which comes out in November. Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V Tag Force Special brings back heroes from different generations of Yu-Gi-Oh. Yugi Mutou from the first series, Jaden Yuki from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, Yusei Fudo from 5Ds, and Yuma Tsukumo from Zexal are in Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V Tag Force Special.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V Tag Force Special is scheduled to come out in Japan this winter. The game will be PlayStation Vita compatible.

    Wew

  • Crevox

If the games still sell, you can’t blame them. I still think it’s a good system.

  • Kaitou21

Wow, and here I thought the Japanese had moved onto smartphones and next-gen handhelds, PSP is totally dead in America but I’m glad there’s still support for it out there.

  • kerolneko

I’m glad the Tag Force series still alive and at the same time sad this wont be in the west </3

    • Adam Sheridan

It might get a digital release in the west, considering those games had a decent following here. It does also state vita compatible, which gives it a little extra on the digital front.

      • kerolneko

Slim chance given that previous one didnt get localized T_T

        • Adam Sheridan

True, but I was thinking since other games have come out in recent times maybe they’d release this digitally for English speaking countries. Localization isn’t an extremely expensive procedure and they’d be assured sales from the die hards. Who knows, maybe I’m being far too optimistic.

      • Robert Hendrie

They skipped on 6 and that came out 3 years ago. I think if they do anything it will just be more iPad games, and another console one where they can sell you digital cards with real money.

        • Adam Sheridan

That’s a good point, actually. I don’t know, maybe the sign they’ve released stuff here outside of tag force is a sign we could see it? I have friends who paid quite a bit of money buying digital cards, so I guess it’s working.

        • The reason they skipped out on 6 was cause, by their claim, 5 didn’t sell enough… but really the real reason I think is cause by then, the PSP was a dead, cursed system for the West. No one wanted to release games on the thing over here.

Since they’re pushing that this is Vita compatible, we might see a risk taker, depending on what kind of availability this game will even have. It’s why WDC on 3DS sales and Millennium Duel sales are important, and I’ve seen a lot of good consumer acknowledgement towards the games whenever they’re promoted.

      • Renaldi Saputra

Konami is even more stingy than Bamco, so I think it won’t be

        • Adam Sheridan

          You raise a good point.

  • Yoshinatsu

I can’t blame them. Those games are not graphically demanding, and the Vita’s user base is simply not big enough to justify the development of major games. By releasing it on the PSP they get both the PSP audience, and the Vita audience. Though Vita users will have to do with half the pixels.

    • JonathanisPrimus

Yu-Gi-Oh! isn’t really major and the budgets for the games were clearly trending downward. I think this is a waste. If they continued to make TFs annually on PSP post-6, I could understand, but they’re going to make Zexal and Arc-V sprites for one game?

    • Mayowa Folorunso

I for one is very happy its for Psp, now we have a chance to get it quickly, no region-lock bs like with vita. Plus we can download a translation patch, that will no doubt be made. Can’t wait! =D

  • Harvey Tejada Loto

konami don’t love vita whhyyyyyyy i wish they make one with awesome grafics

    • Adam Sheridan

Why would they make a card game with awesome graphics? These things are all about the mechanics and they’re going to focus on that more than anything else.

The whole point is to keep costs down and sales high.

      • JonathanisPrimus

If their goal is to keep sales high, a PSP PSN-only game in 2014/2015 isn’t exactly smart.

        • Jomann

psp still sells like crazy in japan, and most japanese don’t do trade ins, they hold on to their tech, so for a japanese only- japanese game, on the most popular handheld in japan next to ds, its a VERY smart move for them. so yeah, demographics are important. plus yugioh is still rather popular in japan.

          • JonathanisPrimus

Have you looked at a Japanese sales chart this year? Sales have completely flat lined on both the software and hardware side. There’s a reason Sony stopped manufacturing PSPs. The machine is 10 years old.

          • British_Otaku

The PSP sold the least out of every platform and has been like that for a long time, in fact Siliconera didn’t even record it as being lower than the Xbox One, Vita TV and Xbox 360 with only 67 units sold last week (presumably as it isn’t in production and there isn’t a point in examining the numbers).

I’ll grant that it has an install base, but deliberately designing a game for a PSP isn’t going to earn the game shelf-space, marketing and interest that a Vita game would get at this point.

How many sites did you see mentioning that FIFA 15 is on the Wii? Probably each one you google now is more interested in the Wii U not getting it, not the 8 year old system but the Wii has a 100 Million install base and some developing countries which use it in numbers (which is why the PS2 still got FIFA 14) on top of cheap development.

        • Adam Sheridan

It’s also compatible on vita. The people who really want the game will buy it and because a lot of it is recycled (not a bad thing) and doesn’t need to be printed the costs stay way down and the sales mean a lot more.

It’s got a decent following, I doubt it takes all that much to make profit on a game like this.

      • Land of Green Pasture

so… you don’t want that HD card’s angle in perfect 90 degree?

        • Adam Sheridan

Thinking about it now, I want a 4K version for Kinect where I can bend and tear my cards in real time.

          • Land of Green Pasture

right? I’d like that too… and for that we need at least a good graphic for that for.. you know.. immersion!

          • Adam Sheridan

Everytime you’re losing you can swipe your opponents cards and toss them off screen, resulting in them calling their older brother to beat you up.

          • Land of Green Pasture

but then you beat him up, with dueling, cos the older brother sux…

          • Adam Sheridan

We need to become a card game dev duo. I can already smell the billions!

          • Land of Green Pasture

lol later maybe, after my study..

  • ScrubSlayer

    It’s up to SECE.
    Prepare for Qliphort meta.

  • Red Veron

Can I play this on a motorcycle… IN AMERICA?

  • JonathanisPrimus

Wow. PSP software sales are dead, even in Japan. Toukiden’s first release did over 150k last year. The expansion has barely mustered 20k. Konami stopped making PES and Baseball games for PSP, so why are they doing this? It just ensures this game is never leaving Japan.

    • Renaldi Saputra

from gematsu’s weekly platform sales, I still see PSP sales on there, even though only at 50-100 numbers, it still sells.

The only thing why PSP games nowadays sold badly bcos the games are multi-platformed PSP-PS Vita. If it’s only for PSP, who knows it will sell well, moreover Yugi-oh series had big name in Japan

  • Mexikado

We didn’t get Tag Force 6, so I’m kinda doubtful that we’ll get this localized. I’ll probably end up importing if it doesn’t, as card effects are still the same anyways. I remember the World Championship games had multilingual support.

  • Albert Wesker

why do I have the terrible feeling that this will also be better than duels carnival on 3ds but won’t be translated?

    • Kaseladen

Probably because its not based on Zexal

  • PowerSerg

This is more like a game I would actually want to buy but this game has like zero chance of coming to the west and even less to coming not striped down plus I don’t have a psp anymore and I don’t own a vita.

    • Jomann

also you can only get japanese psp games on a japanese account, which requires a japanese credit card or a japanese playstation pre-paid credit voucher

      • Kamakuma

That’s not true actually. You can use your US or other credit card from elsewhere and it works all the same. Or you know you can use Paypal which converts it into the currency you will be paying anyway. They added this feature not too long ago.

    • kerolneko

i checked the PSN just now. And to my surprise I saw a yu-gi-oh game that has the same system as Tag Force for PS3 that was released April this year. Surprised I didnt saw it till now. Apparently it was on Xbox Live too.

      • JonathanisPrimus

Other than using some of the same character portraits and music, the Millennium/Decade Duels games have nothing to do with TF. They’re basically F2P games with a paywall.

      • PowerSerg

Yah the game seemed pretty bad from what I sampled sadly. They just make yugioh sims instead of actual games.

  • British_Otaku

Vita compatible PSP game? Since the Vita doesn’t support UMDs, doesn’t that just mean that like most late PSP games (and possibly most Japanese PSP software), it will be avaliable of the PlayStation Store?

    • Renaldi Saputra

I also think that they meant “digital-version from PSN”

    • Hound

      If only vita played UMDs…

My psp can’t charge faster than the juice it eats =S

If only Vita tv played bloody UMDs! *kicks it numerous times*

I could probably play evil internet download files of the games I have.. a rotten devil of a temptation right there.

      • British_Otaku

You must resist and hope that Sony recognises if that some of those 70 million PSP owners would be on board if they could play their library of games (and movies why not?) even if the PSN store didn’t have em.

The odds don’t look good though.

        • JonathanisPrimus

Sony did recognize their PSP fanbase … in Japan. Hence the UMD passport program and recent removal of upgrade fees for PS+ subscribers. North America and Europe didn’t care too much about PSP games, so the program never expanded.

  • Hexodious

Mean while we got some shitty Zexal game for the 3DS.

    • Nonscpo

With no online and half the story cut out :(

  • I still miss 5D’s. Best series in my honest opinion.

Just so many things I personally loved about it. CARD GAMES ON MOTORCYCLES, FOR LIFE!

    (refresh)http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100416074704/yugioh/images/d/d5/Team5ds_large.jpg

    • friendly neighborhood_dude

      I miss 5d’s sooo bad :(
It was the last show I watched it together with my brothers.

      • Ronldbx6

        T_T

    • British_Otaku

I want to watch it and play the game just because the premise… Card games on motorcycles is crazy enough for me to overlook how little involvement the original mangaka must have in everything or how many people don’t seem to care about the first sixty chapters or so.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPu59oa8zHs

With how little F-Zero, we have had in the last ten years… I’ll try it gladly.

      • First 64 episodes are the the best in the series. After that, there’s some annoying filler and pre-WDC stuff but it picks up again once the tournament starts.

Last arc and the final duel… It really had a touching ending, a more believable romance compared to other series, and I feel like their duels were more complex than other series.

But it’s just me. I’m a tiny bit of a fanboy when it comes to 5Ds and I’m prolly making sound more amazing than it is.

It’s worth a watch at the very least if you can get over the premise (which I see is what drew you in, haha)

        • British_Otaku

…With the “sixty chapters”, I was talking about the original mang-

Oh… Even Yugioh 5Ds was that long? If I do find the time to watch Yugioh, it will be after seeing more the source material (the Kazuki Takahashi) and/or playing the game first.

It is a little worrying if you call part of an anime first series “filler” but just know that I’m more interested in this anime than GX (hair is too bland) and ZEXAL (hair is too silly).

I have some other similar recommendations like Yokai Watch, Gyrozetter, Inazuma Eleven and Gaist Crusher so I want to give the shorter ones a fair shake first. Partly as I’m invested in those casts, but hearing about something to look forward aside from card games on motorcycles is good.

    • Hound

Just curious since I stopped playing in duelist league tournaments when Magician’s Force (MFC) was new..

What was the purpose of the motorcycles when a large machine wasn’t necessary anymore?

Did they have a tactical advantage? Or are the main characters gangsters that intimidate tothers?

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

5D’s will never be topped. Arc-V is doing pretty good so far. Leagues superior to Zexal

    • Mayowa Folorunso

True that dude 5ds was one HELL of a ride…..eh? anybody? lol
Anyways yeah im just glad everything is coming back! Gx and Original. Its about time! =D

    • Ronldbx6

Yes 5D’s was the sh*t! Couldn’t get into Yu-gi-oh Zexal sh*t I was like “what did they do to the series?” facepalm. And of course the first Yu-gi-oh was OG. GX was okay.

    • Ni ~Algidus~

it’s funny how people bashed 5D’s when it started airing and how much love that season gets now. I got plenty of hate replies back then because i liked 5Ds alot

      • 1000000% this. A lot of haters transformed into fans

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

lol took Zexal years to get a game. Arc-V got one this fast. I guess we know what is trying to be forgotten.

    • Before you start assuming things, you should at least know that Zexal ended up getting a rise in viewership and acceptance over in Japan as it went on, ending up beating out the one show that was giving it problems at the start, “Cardfight!! Vanguard”, which fell into basically 0 budget hell. The lack of a game up until recently has 0 to do with Zexal’s performance. (and much as people bash on Zexal, it’s still probably the most solidly and consistently written series so far in the franchise, which is usually plagued with weird rewrites or specific card archetype pushings. looking at you Crow.)

What it has to do with is the 3DS’s and the Vita’s performances in Japan. The 3DS floundered it’s first year, so we got a game the year after when it revitalized itself. The Vita only stabilized recently in terms of sales, so now we’re getting basically a tester digital game for it. This is also counting in the fact that they’d have to decide on building a new engine for the game as well. With the 3DS, they built an entirely new engine. With the Vita, they decided to play it safe and try out the PSP first to see if the audience is still alive, before they start working on a new engine.

And it should be noted by what I’ve seen of the scans, this isn’t even actually an Arc-V game. This is a DM/GX/5D’s/ZEXAL/Arc-V game. The only reason Arc-V is in the title is because that’s the current running series.

      • NeoArkadia

Arc-V is specifically in the title because, yes, currently running series, and Yu-Gi-Oh! has rebranded the titles every freaking series over in Japan, likely for copyright reasons.

        Vanguard’s doing similar rebranding.

I think it’s just a thing Japan does with regards to their brands.

      • JonathanisPrimus

Nothing was stopping Konami from releasing a Zexal themed Tag Force 7 on PSP in 2012. It’s not like they’re against putting out PSP software, as today’s announcement demonstrates. TF7 would’ve been Vita compatible too, as TF6 got a Vita compatible PSN release in Japan.

        • Actually, it feels like there was something stopping them. I remember sometime back then, I was told to not hold my breath for any video games, cause Konami seemed to be refocusing it’s efforts on web stuff and not spending extra money on something that was seen as a sorta “treat” to people (Tag Force). Which is what ended up resulting in things like Yu-Gi-Oh! BAM on Facebook. Evidently that and the new Duel Arena (aka the most price gouging thing in existence) and the popularity of a games like Millennium Duels in the last year have helped a lot in this kind of decision.

If you don’t want to take my thoughts though, that’s fine. I’ve been following the series very closely for quite a while now, so I’m at least aware of what Konami’s mindset might be– and that mindset might simply be that they didn’t want to put anymore money into video games when web and mobile seemed to be becoming the new money-making god.

  • Kurai Buzzwagon

Hell i would play a yugioh otome game the ushould do that since psp is getting otome games all the time make a yugioh one. GONNA DATE DAT BAKURA

    • As a sorta plus note: Pictures confirm that Bakura shows up on the character map, so he should be duelable.

      • Kurai Buzzwagon

can i tagduel with him since htis is tagforce? Since that can only end up lolzy

        • You’ll have to wait for more details to see just how fully-featured this game is!

          • Kurai Buzzwagon

damn it I want this game so badly I loved tag force

    • Ni ~Algidus~

since tag force is pretty much a YGO date sim so you can expect a “Bakura Ending”.
I want more Aki and Sherry though : ^)

      • Kurai Buzzwagon

Yeah i agree on the Sherry part acutally

  • supercyc10

    are you fuckin for real?
…kinda makes me wonder that if it was made for the vita instead, would there have been a bigger capacity for cards

    • Dark Zerato

Probably not. 7000 card is the amount of yugioh cards that has been released so far.

      • supercyc10

        are you suuuure?
even those from the original series

        • Dark Zerato

What do you mean original series ? The 1st generation ?
There is a lot of card from anime/manga that hasn’t been released yet. But it’s up to KNM whether or not they want those card in the game. Anime/manga cards are usually broken or useless. And i bet you couldn’t even use all of 7000 cards.

    • The thing you should be worrying about as a result of so many cards is loading times. Tag Force games would really take their time with moves once more than four cards were on the field at any given time. The WC games had that problem eventually too. All of the ruling coding and effect coding bogging the AI down.

  • Should be mentioned that this game also has Yuya from Arc-V, if it isn’t obvious. No idea why they weren’t mentioned, since their series title is right in there.

From what I’ve been able to gather, this is likely to be a digital-only game. As I said over in the Duel Generations thread (where I linked the pictures in the first place), I’m very certain this is a “Tester” game before they make a full-out Vita Tag Force game.

There is still that rumor that this might only be a limited-availability title for this winter, which will likely hurt our chances at getting this localized, but hopefully that won’t be the case. I’d sure love to have an all-series Tag Force game! There’s no known price or anything about it either.

  • screw_ball

Sweet, between this and the Android game I’ll get my card game fix after all. not buying Duel Carnival since they buggered the English release.
I’ll definitely import this day one and then apply the inevitable card translation pack when it gets made.

    • If it’s even available to buy as a physical import. Though I guess you can always see if digital download importing works.

      • screw_ball

I have a Japanese PSN account so I’m not worried about that.

        • Oh, that’s good. The only problem is that I’ve heard last night in other places is a claim that buying Tag Force 6 digitally has a sort of region-block on it, but I’m not too sure on it. Apparently there’s still ways around it, though, if it is the case.

          • Mayowa Folorunso

That’s why psp is still the best in this sort of situation. none of that region-lock bs lol

  • Vallen

I love tag force games! I’d totally get this if it came west

  • pokeslob

does anyone know if this will be DL only on both consoles? or will we at least get a physical PSP version?

    • From what I could tell, it’s likely to be download-only. Unconfirmed, but it’s the most likely case.

  • sangokas kakarotas

Power of chaos was my favorite.

  • Spektru

    PSP isn’t dead!

  • MaskedHeroxx

What jaden is in the game… I’m getting this

    • mckun

Most likely original like the last PSP game he was in. Not the dark overlord or Yubel fusion one.

      • MaskedHeroxx

Good to know I did miss this game alot

  • I just sold my PSP yesterday.

    #NeverForget

  • N1ntendo

they just made a new Yu-Gi-Oh game for 3DS recently that was digital only, I think it is completely digital for that series from here on out.

  • Loco4Divas

I still play my psp from time to time :)

  • Learii

I hope this will come to the west as PSN for vita

  • Chef Chef

weird i was JUST talking about a game like this yesterday but this game NEEDS to come to the west (and 7000 cards!? yikes those loading times are going to suck)

    • I agree. I am not gonna envy those loading times.

Best you can do to make it come to the west is start bugging Konami on it over twitter/facebook.

  • Kamen Rider Rayz

Wait wut? PSP is still alive? I thought they abandoned it already.

    • Juan Manuel M. Su├írez

Sony abandoned it, third party support didn’t~.

  • Unlimax

WAI- is that Yami .. a game for the original Yugi ?
    OMG its him *faints*

  • mckun

I kept reading this as “Otome YGO game.”

(How would that even work? There’s barely any girls in some of the YGO series. Yaoi?)

    • refrain

Otome YGO? Watch Arc-V and you will understand

    • ShadowDivz

i thought otome games are aimed at women.
So yugioh with it’s high mle cast count sounds perfect.

  • Ni ~Algidus~

    HOLY SHIIIIIIIIIIIIT
    import day one here

  • Drev

they should’ve made this for vita, not psp. And what about online multiplayer?

    • John

Maybe they’ll let you play online with Vita, but not on PSP…

  • MikelAL93

I’d rather have this come out on Vita, honestly. Especially if it were for the trophies. :p

    • ScrubSlayer

Imagine “Collect all 7k+ cards” trophy.

  • BurnItWithFiraga!

I want this. I’ve been waiting for a new Tag Force game forever now. I want revenge Yusei. Why? He summons not ONE Stardust Dragon, but TWO to THREE Stardust Dragons! I’m resurrecting my duel disk for this one.

Jaden Yuki, don’t think I forgot about you too! Your broken Hero deck is goin bye-bye! CHAZZ IT UP!!!!

    Ok Im done.

  • Washoda Ajnin

This game has probably been in the works for longer than the Vita has been a thing.
