Rodea the Sky Soldier was originally announced back in 2011, as a NiGHTS style game by Sonic the Hedgehog creator Yuji Naka and his studio Prope. This week’s issue of Famitsu magazine confirms the game is still alive. [Thanks Game Jouhou]

To give you an idea of what the game is like, think of it as a NiGHTS-style flying action game, where you get to shoot down all kinds of aerial machines.

While it seemed like the game had been cancelled after going so long with little information, Kadokawa Games mentioned last year that Rodea was still in development.

According to the magazine report, Rodea the Sky Soldier was originally in development for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii, but it will now release for Wii U and 3DS. There was also an original Wii version of the game, which was completed back in 2011, but never released. Since then, they began new developments for a Wii U version of the game.

The Wii version of Rodea the Sky Soldier that never released will also be included in first-print copy of Rodea the Sky Soldier for Wii U when it releases in Spring 2015 in Japan.

I say this has a high chance of getting localized. It seems to be somewhat high profile, I’m guessing we’ll get it winter 2015, or early 2016.

  • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

    IT LIVESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!

    HAILLLLL YUJI NAKAAAA!!!!

  • Tijani Palmer

This game gives me hope for Half-Llife 3…I hate you Gabe

  • DungeonRPG

    f*ck………no wii release…=/ no region-free wiiu…
*edit* nevermind…the first-press of this game will comes with the wii version as well…

    • Princess_Eevee9

      Please complain more.

      • DungeonRPG

been waiting for this on wii since it was announced E3 2011….my tears ;/

        • John Diamond

why not have the game on the more advanced wii u, rather than the original wii

        • Princess_Eevee9

They helped fuel the drive to complete the game. Besides your comment holds no merit when complaining about the Region-locked Wii U when this game has a chance of being localized. And upon release shall hopefully utilize the better hardware and even add extra features. I’m hoping for Online.

          • DungeonRPG

who helped the to fuel what drive to complete the game….
Rodea finished *production* in June, 2011 (as the exec producer said himself on twitter)
but because nintendo pretty much buried the wii…kadokawa was forced to not actually sell the game in order to minimize losses
(see the case with Earth Seeker…)

Wii was my very favourite system and I just hate the way nintendo abandoned it (before WiiU even planted its foot)
            Nothing about merits…just personal..

    • Demi-Friend

We are lucky that they might remove it soon…

  • Princess_Eevee9

Well that is good news I enjoyed Into the Dreams for the Wii a lot.

  • DungeonRPG

    @Sato
you missed that, the first-edition will also come with the Wii version of the game, on a separate disc – of the game that they finished back in 2011 but didn’t get to sell until now..

    • Sato

Oh damn, they must’ve added that bit since it wasn’t there when I wrote it. Thanks for the heads up!

  • neospite

I thought for sure this was cancelled. Who knows why it took so long, lets just rejoice that it is finally coming… to Japan. But wasn’t Xseed going to originally release this? Maybe they’ll get back on board for this.

    • DungeonRPG

they finished development and even production/manufacturing of the game back in 2011. But because nintendo stopped support for the wii, they missed the window of opportunity to actually release the game.

      • neospite

Prope released Fishing Resort for Wii back in 2011 though, with a fishing rod accessory no less.

      • British_Otaku

Adding to neospite, it wasn’t that the Wii stopped supporting the Wii. I believe their store is still up right now (partially so we can access those games on the Wii U) and FIFA 15 just released on the Wii (and PSP) two months ago along with more recent platforms.

Skyward Sword came out in November 2011 with most of Operation Rainfall’s big three coming out in 2012 in North America.

  • Kaetsu

I’m really happy this project isn’t dead and that its coming to Wii U.

  • Based Ignacio Puppo

So glad that his game didn’t turn to vaporware.

  • Namuro

Oh yeah! I have never let go of the hope for this game!

    I’m glad I BELIEVED!!!

I have to go and look at the old trailer again, and now my hype is through da roof!

  • Serge

To everyone who doesn’t remember about this game:

    • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

All my luv baby. All my luv.

Yuji Naka had never let me down till now.^_^

    • Perro

Space Harrier, Nights into Dreams, Sin & Punishment; Simply a love letter to fans of those games

      • GH56734

Rodea is also done by Yuji Naka.

    • British_Otaku

I don’t have a Japanese Wii U yet, but I just might get on to have a legit means to play Smash 4 Wii U (got the Japanese 3DS one as well) and the Wii + Wii U version of this.

      It looks great.

      • GH56734

Get a first-print Wii U copy if you still have a Wii ;)

        • British_Otaku

I plan to but if I go out of my way to get a first print Wii U game, I may as well jump on and buy a Japanese Wii U and try out some of those few exclusives.

A good number of games from Japan don’t get a retail release on the Wii U, though America does get that from case to case.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Hopefully they’ve smoothed out some of the animation since the original trailer for this game.

  • Lilburrito

    ……..KYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!

    Ok I’m done……KYAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! I thought this game was dead! I can’t believe it’s really alive :O

  • CozyAndWarm

Whoooooa baby. It finally happened. They’d get that localization started now if they were smart.

  • All aboard the hype train!

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

all aboard the rail hype train

  • Wow the Wii version too? I waited so long for this.

  • DurrD

    Looks fantastic.
Im totally up for some new on rails shooting

  • TheManWithPants

IT’S ALIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE! I’ll be picking up the 3DS version if it gets localized.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Since Kadokawa is involved, I hope someone can eventually ask them if Earth Seeker can get similar treatment plus localization. If not for Wii U/N3DS, then at least New 3DS similar to this and Xenoblade. If publishers are putting out under-appreciated and unreleased Wii games on New 3DS, I say go full tilt.

    • Ohh, it’d be cool if it could get the New 3DS treatment~. I just really want the game to get localized. ;o;

  • ネオフォトン ~ Neo

I’m still hyped for this game, will definitely pick it up for my 3DS~

  • Professor_Icepick

Oh man, I was really worried about this. Hopefully this ends up hitting the States as well. I was really hyped for this game when it was first announced.

  • TruSpindash

Fantastic news, I remember really being interested in the game when it was first shown. If it comes stateside I’ll definitely pick up the Wii U version.

  • Yay! That’s wonderful~! I was thinking about this and Earth Seeker just last night! I’m so glad that it’s still/finally going to be coming out, and I dearly hope it will be localized!

Even though it’s unlikely, I wish Earth Seeker would see some kind of localization too (even digital only or something ;u;). Or maybe get remade for Wii U. . .?

  • WJ

Finally! That seemed to be a great project, I’m glad it isn’t dead. It gives me back a little hope for KAIO: The King of Pirates too…

  • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Never heard of this but any chance to support something Non-Nintendo on Wii U I’ll jump on. (As long as I’ll like it of course).

    • HarakiriKami

      Sonic boom?

      More like Sega Doomed

  • Kornelious

Huh, This looks pretty interesting, i like it’s art design too…..Hopefully Nintendo will consider a western release…..

  • zeroroute

Don’t remember it but you had me at Yuji Naka and Rail Shooter.

  • William Cole

Kinda like Kid Icarus Uprising, yeah I know Nights was first n’ all. Looks neat.

  • Tiredman

I actually wouldn’t mind giving this a try. Hope it comes to the west.

  • Sentinel

Yuji Naka + Rail Shooter = First day buy if it comes over.

  • Alphabet Soup

I feel like Piccolo’s “yes”s are needed here. NIGHTS-like mechanics and Takumi Miyajima’s scripts? Yes!

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I’m not going to lie…I forgot about this game :O

  • Farid Belkacemi

I can smell it : this game will be… GLORIOUS.

  • Vyse Legendaire

The real sequel to Nights right here. Finally!
