NCsoft is known for bringing us titles such as Lineage, Guild Wars, and Aion, and they’re looking to add another big title to the list with Project HON, an upcoming mecha action/shooting RPG. 4Gamer shares more information from the recent NCsoft Premier event.

The game takes place on a future Earth, where the world has been polluted due to the effects of World War III, and mankind continues fighting to find places that are safe to live in. You’ll play as a soldier who can control a mechanic weapon using brain signals, also called the Project HON (Humanoid robot On Neuro-control), a technology that allows people to control the machines on the battlefield.

At first glance, it may look like a third-person mecha shooter but the game heavily focuses on cooperation between character classes, along with RPG elements such as weapon and parts customizations and upgrades. Additionally, it runs on the Unreal Engine 4.

Here’s a little bit about the game’s story.

Year 2054:

003

The depletion of fossil fuel resources and the effects of global warming have made life for mankind tougher than ever. The Association of the American Continent has been at war in various parts of the world with the Association of Asian Continents for political rule and resources.

As disputes continued over control, it eventually started the third world war. Unlike past lengthy world wars, World War III was over in just three days. Due to all the radiation poison, the foundation of life was lost, and mankind continued to walk the path of decline.

Year 2079:

004

After 20 years of a dark era, humanity’s numbers have dwindled, and battles to occupy safe zones continue to rage on. Due to the environment making it difficult for humans to perform any actions, including war, they’ve developed robots that can be boarded by humans, and used as weapons of war.

In order to be more effective, with sharp actions and judgment, scientists researched so that the heroes of war can control these humanoid machines of war with their minds. The project was established as “Project HON”. The protagonist is a hero who fought in the war 25 years prior, and using the technology of Project HON, he and other heroes will fight to build a new foundation for mankind.

Here’s a look at some trailers for the game:

Will my desire for a an online PC Gundam experience finally be partially answered?

  • urbanscholar

Hmm I wonder if this means blade & Soul is vaporware now?

Anyway I like the look of this

Well, I think a lot of people have given up hope on the Western release of that, though I’m sure people are waiting until 2015 to see if all hope is lost (I mean, they keep it on the webpage). But Blade & Soul has been very successful in S.Korea of course, China, Russia and other markets so far.

Saw the videos for this on Steparu just an hour or so ago. This looks really, really exciting. Not a huge fan of the Mecha designs (I could swear I’ve seen ones like that before somewhere… Terminator Salvation, maybe?). Recalls and evokes mecha action games like Front Mission Evolved & Titanfall, but with NCSoft’s gorgeous production quality. Really excited to see what this turns into — hopefully it’s good, and hopefully we’ll see in the West.

  • Nicholas Perry

This sounds like the base for a fantastic SP game. Hnnng still want to play.

  • Captain Levi

    Interesting idea.
Hope it won’t turn into a P2W game.

  • Godmars

Looks like what Titanfall needed to be.

If they can deliver on gameplay.

  • fuhlen

    Front mission opening ripoff
    Armored core design ripoff
    Oh a ripoff

    • Brion Valkerion

      Don’t forget Battlefield

    • ndjn3979

Could be a good Armored Core replacement, because GOD, AC went down the fking drain.

      • fuhlen

Now with microtransactions, can’t wait for mech pantsu

      • WhyWai

couldn’t agree more with you. AC:V is shit

  • Brion Valkerion

Looks cool, hope it shapes up to be a real gem. The melee stuff looked a bit too… cinematic? I guess is the word. Other than that has a lot of promise in my eyes.

  • TheDarkEmpress

Looks excellent for a mecha game…Armored Core looked amazing in the cinematics, but actual gameplay was lacking…they just never seemed to get the formula down for intense mech battles in my opinion…Mecha games seem to be a really niche genre, and generally most titles aren’t all that great, this one looks excellent though, I hope to see more.

    • 9breaker

Eh I have the opposite opinion on that since Armored Core went pretty deep in gameplay and is pretty intense in multiplayer and singleplayer matches, maybe not the prettiest games but they have a good sense of art and could’ve gone further if they had a higher budget. I do agree that mecha games are niche but there are plenty of good titles out there. Oddly I’m not that interested in this one that much because it looks more like a TPS game to me or something similar to titan fall. But to each their own view.

      • TheDarkEmpress

I respect Armored Core as a game. There was quite a bit of thought that went into mecha design when it came to higher-tiered PvP. The complexity was certainly there. I just found the environments really lacking and the stories uninspiring. I also found alot of the enemies to be really crappy….even into AC4 and beyond you were basically just beating down a munch of MTs and turrets, not so much against enemy mecha. Again, it’s just my opinion, I like Armored Core, I really do, but there’s just certain aspects where it really falls flat, and it just annoys me that those issues have not been addressed even after so many installments.

And I somewhat retract my comment about there not being many good mecha games, particularly in the MS Gundam dept, but sadly there’s just as many flops as there is success with Gundam; Encounters in Space and Zeonic Front being among my favorites. I only wished Metal Wolf Chaos came to the states….if you saw or know what it is about you’d be absolutely astounded it didn’t. ‘MURICA!

        • 9breaker

Yeah I respect your opinion and I see where you are coming from, Armored Core games is one of those you either like it or you don’t. I do wish they step it up in terms of presentation but they haven’t had the budget for that with From Soft being rather obscure other than their success with the souls series. They might branch out to making games with larger budget with them being apart of Kadokawa and their apparent success with the souls series.

Yeaaah I’m a large fan of gundam and their games well but yeah so of them can be downright terrible but there’s plenty amazing ones that haven’t been released here state side. Metal Wolf Chaos, is the only thing that makes me want to get a japanese xbox, TOO AMERICAN.

I ,RICHARD HAWK, AM THE LAST GREAT AMERICAN HERO.

          • Göran Isacson

In a good and righteous world, this is the next game they’ll try to do a sequel to, or even just a remaster of, when they’re done with Bloodborne. The world deserves debris-surfing in space, with the president of the US. It just… deserves it.

    • fuhlen

      Oy vey, good goyim

    • darke

Last mech game I really enjoyed was the last single-player mechwarrior/mechcommander series of games. Shame that series was killed off by Microsoft.

  • Mind0105A

    Looks interesting.

  • Zazon Zenzy

Let’s see if this will beat Border Break. I find Border Break has more personality, though. This one smells cliche.

  • kaisergali

Sigh, this just makes me remember exteel. So hard to find a game like that T.T

  • Yan Zhao

Blade & Souls to the west, when?

  • Kai2591

When asians do mech games, they go all out!

  • WhyWai

It’s like the prettier version of Armored Core.
