It Took Two Years To Recreate Final Fantasy VII In LittleBigPlanet

By Chris Priestman . November 19, 2014 . 11:00am

Jamie Colliver has spent the past two years recreating Final Fantasy VII in LittleBigPlanet. Not it’s finished and playable in LittleBigPlanet 3 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita. You can also play it in LittleBigPlanet 2 on PS3.

Eurogamer caught up with Colliver who told them that the entire Final Fantasy VII story and its side missions have been fitted into 31 LittleBigPlanet levels.

“I already have a battle system with Limit Breaks in place, every cut-scene/dialogue, all five material types using creatinators, all of the soundtrack, every character, boss, enemies and a world map.”, Colliver said.

You can see loads of videos (over one hundred) on Colliver’s YouTube channel that document his recreation’s progress over the past two years. You can also watch a trailer above for Colliver’s LittleBigPlanet recreation of Final Fantasy VII.

  • ZnTxn

    This is pretty darn impressive.

  • Kango234

  • Adrian Duran

    Finally, FFVII in HD

    • Zack

I can laugh AND cry reading your comment…

      • Ric Vazquez

        Same here LOL

  • Desk

    not it’s finished

  • Hakai Ouji Vegeta #BADMAN

2 years? That’s some dedication. Good job.

  • DesmaX

    HD Towns are hard

  • Shade DMessiah

Woah what? He should be getting paid for this.

  • ryougazell

Only LBP2 and 3 :(? I only own the first one

  • ArminJrpg

    hell yeah! getting LBP2 then!

  • That’s what I call commitment people!

  • Demeanor

Awesome! This guy would become an international hero if this got The Message thru to oh-so-mobile-f2p-focused Squeenix.

  • Vyse Legendaire

Thats some crazy ass dedication right there. Lol the world map is really impressive, w/ Highwind and all.

  • Wicked Rob

This is cool at first glance but when i play it its actually pretty terrible.
The best part is the music…and the maybe the cutscenes

  • kaisergali

This is why I love this kind of games. It has a passionate community that always delivers and despite I’m on the side that just enjoys their creations I have to say that its only because of this incredible people with an amazing imagination we get to experience all of this amazing boundaries this kind of game gives. I take off my hat in respect and admiration.

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

Perhaps Jaimie should take this opportunity to make his own game from the ground up. A guy tried to demake GTA III, as an 8-bit game, which became Retro City Rampage.

  • Alex Shadov

See Square Enix, is not that difficult is it? A guy did it in about two years… shame on you Square Enix.

    • LightningFarron19

Yep, except the fact that he didn’t have to develop the assets to make the game, doesn’t have voice voice acting, it does not have the most up to date graphics, it does not feature more up to date side-quests, it’s all side-scrolling when it should be more 3 dimensional (like open world), no up to date music, and it lacks any form of up to date combat system. Oh and the marketing campaign behind it.

Oh yes, this PS2 “developed” game should be totally compared to a AAA franchise number title that took 145 million to originally make (with marketing budget as well)

Man, this is sick! I think it’s time for me to get LBP.

  • Codex

This is incredible, also hilarious that a fan recreated ff7 in two years using what would be somewhat difficult methods and square won’t even consider it as it will take them ‘too many years to invest’

    • doubleO7

To be fair, it didn’t cost this guy any money, just a lot of time. Long development cycle aside, Square would have to pour millions into an FF7 remake.

I feel a lot of people don’t really comprehend the sheer scope of such a project, and why it’s not such a simple decision for Square to make, especially coming off the coat-tails of FF15. From a business perspective, it would make more sense to pour those resources into another new project, rather than re-doing something old.

      • Codex

I definitely understand that, for sure the guy devoted his own time and no fiscal resource to completing this project.

The scope of such a remake would indeed be massive and for a square level quality production would require millions to invest in the project as you’ve said, from a business perspective it makes sense to invest in the future but it’s also almost completely fiscally irresponsible to ignore the massive demand and potential millions, essentially easy money as it would be, to recreate this game for current gen consoles.

While it would take millions, most of the resources are already there, complete story, character development, concepts, selection of voice acting and high res models (movies have already done the hard parts)

The reason why square won’t invest in this title at this stage with such a great demand and so many resources already available for them to do so is beyond me.

      • Fox

Time has monetary value, though. We’re not immortal, ya’ know?

  • *Slow clap*

  • chroma816

    Jesus Christ that’s impressive.

  • ndjn3979

    This is cool.

  • Shippoyasha

After all these years, One Winged Angel still delivers the shivers.

Amazing job with the custom art as well. I played around with the LBP creation tools and I know how difficult it can be to make entire stages.

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

    This guy’s dedication > all of Squeenix’s dedication~.

  • Prinnydoom

  • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

Give Final Fantasy VII a rest. Stop hanging on to it for dear life.

  • Kraken

is the level where cloud cross-dresses to seduce a man in it?

  • I appreciate the effort, but man that Trailer is a mess. It’s hard to see if the effort was worthwhile from it, honestly. But it is still really impressive, and I’m definitely gonna look into it more.

  • Ixbran

what a way to waste 2 years of your life

  • 9breaker

This is nice and all.. but I’m not really a huge fan of LBP aesthetics and if I wanted to play FF VII I’d just play it on my vita or ps3 not like that would happen anytime soon though.

  • That’s a lot of dedication right there. Props to the dude :)

  • Kornelious

    Holy Crap! That’s pretty spectacular work! O_O I’m glad I bought LBP3 now! :D

    • theBridgeburner

I’m tempted to buy LBP 3 because of this.

  • Ric Vazquez

    It’s B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L

  • Antonio Potter

Amazing. I do think the guy behind this should listen to feedback and fix the release trailer though. LBP is cuddly, give us something smooth. The second video is a lot better but too slow.
