After opening two teaser websites with the hints of X and D, we found out that the “D” website was for an upcoming collaboration of Etrian Odyssey and Mystery Dungeon. As it turns out, “X” was announced as Etrian Odyssey V.

The title was announced at the end of Atlus’ Etrian Odyssey NicoNico livestream with the above trailer. While details are pretty vague, the trailer mentions a new world with the phrase “potential for disaster” in English, and concludes by saying the adventure will go to a new world.

Etrian Odyssey V is currently in development. A release date or platform have yet to be revealed.

  • DyLaN

I’m guessing the CV for the narrator is Kana Hanazawa, but I could be wrong.

  • I will buy LITERALLY anything with the Etrian Odyssey name on it. EO4 is still by far my favorite 3DS game, can’t wait for this one

  • AkuLord3

EOII Untold, the EO x Mystery dungeon crossover and now Etrian Odyssey 5…Lots of awesome love for my favorite series. Thank you Atlus! You show that you don’t just support just one rpg series as much as the fans want you to COUGH PERSONA 3/4 COUGH.
    Now where’s that Raidou love?

  • By showing off the world map like that I’d assume that this is going to be more like EO4 where you explore a big world with several labyrinths instead of one continuous maze with different strata. Honestly I preferred that approach, so I’m excited

  • Fronkhead

Etrian Odyssey IV is amazing, so I cannot wait for this. Shame the website isn’t live yet despite being at the end of the teaser trailer.

    • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

F.O.E!!!!! is ruining the website so u must wait first lol.^_^

    • Shane Guidaboni

At first I didn’t, but now I know I like EOIV a lot more than Untold. It’s possibly the best numbered title in the series.

      • Fronkhead

Aye, IV is really special. If it had Untold’s 3D effect I would be truly over the moon.

  • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

    F.O.E!!!!! F.O.E!!!!! F.O.E!!!!! F.O.E!!!!! F.O.E!!!!! F.O.E!!!!! F.O.E!!!!! F.O.E!!!!!

I am going to get Persona Q and Untold 2 here only to make sure i get this game lol.^_^

  • Xmas Lopez

SOLD. Now the question on everyone’s mind will be whether it goes with EO4’s leveling system or EOU’s.

    • AkuLord3

Well they were the same, just one didn’t force lock on certain lvls. I rather it be EOU style/3 whatever since that kinda bugged me about 4.

  • TruePariah

Oh god, we’re just going to get PQ and EOU2 is not even out yet then there’s the EO Mystery Dungeon and then THIS? 2015 hasn’t even started yet and I’m already broke.

    • shytende

Yep, with all those EO game and Devil Saga 2, 2017 will be an amazing year for Europe.

  • JohnNiles

ATLUS’s teams must be pretty busy.

  • alhamega

Last year was P5, then this year is this… SMTV next pls!!!

    • shytende

      Because it’s a new EO ?

      • alhamega

The thing is I never really get into EO series before.

  • Serge

“Etrian Odyssey V is currently in development. A release date or platform have yet to be revealed.”
You’re pure evil, Ishaan… Pure evil.

    • Definitely 3DS. HOPEFULLY WiiU? (I can dream)

      • hng qtr

Or New 3DS. Maybe that’s why they didn’t announce the platform.

        • British_Otaku

The install base disparity is too large for the New 3DS to exclusively get it and I don’t see why that would be a reason to hide the platform with the system being out for over a month.

          • hng qtr

Who knows when it will be released and how popular the N3DS will be at the time? They could be developing for 3DS and change platforms later.

          • landlock

I’m surprised they haven’t tried doing a 3DS/PSV release yet. Especially in Japan.

          • hng qtr

Playing EO on anything but the DS line and Wii U sounds really awkard.

          • HarakiriKami

PSV doesnt have the second screen so it can support its gameplay. Its a DS series

          • Mila

            2 screen 1 screen .. doesn’t matter
I’d rather prefer a system that gives you a better looking game with OpenGL than a system that uses a Java graphics that looks like an old smartphone game
Oh well , guess the EO series clearly staying in 3DS

          • HarakiriKami

Dont be a snob. I also suggest you look up what the machines actually support. Technically.

          • lemon

Etrian Odyssey would have to have its map making aspect neutered to work well on the PSV. It makes no sense to do so.

          • British_Otaku

As of last week, the difference is 16,369,823 (older models) vs 578,304 (New 3DS). While I don’t doubt that the New 3DS can make it to a million by the end of the year and I’m aware that it doesn’t need a massive install base to pull the usual 90-100K first week and go on with decent legs.

Atlus would probably want more security if the power of the New 3DS doesn’t have any immediate uses.

    • It wasn’t me, it was Sato! Credit goes to him for covering the livestream. :)

      • Serge

Oh, right, my bad… But you still are pure evil, Ishaan, pure evil.

  • James Enk

looking at the moon: i would like to see a sci-fi JRPG with Etrian gameplay

    • HarakiriKami

SMT Strange Journey is what you want

      • Barrylocke89

As amazing as SJ is, Sci-Fi Etrian would be a little different. I imagine James is thinking more of regular Etrian Odyssey in terms of party building, class customization, FOE etc, but with Sci Fi aesthetics and classes (Engineer? Space Marine? Psychic?). SJ, like most SMTs, is all about the demons when it comes to gameplay.

  • Lemski07

been thinking of collecting all EO games since DS.. since I pretty much like the art… but the grind is so much specially if u do have alot of games to do ;(

    • EO is all about smart party building, you rarely have to grind

      • hng qtr

Except in the first one, where it’s all about Immunize.

        • British_Otaku

Still on that game and aware of how broken Immunize is, I’ll be avoiding it for the whole run. >_>

          • hng qtr

That thing is just absurd. I had a Medic and a Troubador in my party and when I was in the 3rd stratum I realized that I wouldn’t have to go back to the city anymore if I didn’t want to, enemies and FOE’s couldn’t do more than scratch my team and I had pretty much infinite SP.

      • kao

I like the first person dungeon and party creation/ customization but Im not fond of the 6 party system..

        • hng qtr

But you use 5 characters per party.

          • kao

oh yeah it was 5. its been a while since I played so I mixed it up with class of heroes. but now that I think about it, it’s not the party number but the battle system that wasn’t for me..

  • HarakiriKami

    YAAAASSSS!!!

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Atlus, troll everybody and release on PSV? Yes~?

    Well..an asshole can dream~.

  • Ethan_Twain

Okay, this is one to keep an eye on. Since the release of Etrian Odyssey IV Atlus has developed two Etrian Odyssey Untold games that added story modes and also a Persona Etrian Odyssey game that obviously had a good amount of narrative in it. So the question is whether Etrian Odyssey V will be a return to classic “The narrative basically doesn’t exist” Etrian Odyssey or if Atlus will look to carry over some of their new story driven initiatives.

My heart demands a return to minimalist storytelling.

The other thing to keep an eye on is the director. I have no idea who’s directing this. The guy who directed the original trilogy has been tied up with the Untold remakes. The guy who directed Etrian Odyssey IV went on to direct Persona Q. So they’ve both had a project over the last year. Which begs the question, who on earth is directing this game?

    • AkuLord3

I don’t care how they do the story as long as i’m not forced into a party instead of making my own. Its fine with the Untold Spin offs but for the main series, it would kinda suck. The 7th Dragon games did a fine job on story such and even if how people feel about EO games story, it still had them and did it well without the usual rpg stuff.

    • Jero

A story mode would limit their options for a future “Etrian Odyssey V: Untold” so i don’t know.

    • raygunner659

It seems they’re teasing more of a story than previously, what with this potential for disaster thing, seeing as most of the others were just exploring a labyrinth (until things happen further down), so who knows. Overworld exploration like 4 seems like it’ll happen again. Basically we don’t know anything right now, so it’s just wait and see until then.

    • ZnTxn

The director is actually Shigeo Komori. Who was in charge of Heroes of Lagaard and The Drowned City~

    • Shippoyasha

I don’t see why we can’t have a story that is still there for those who want that. I don’t think it was any detriment to the series at all.

      • Ethan_Twain

I think that defined narratives are bad for Etrian Odyssey. In a world where so many JRPG stories are cliche, bad, or both, Etrian Odyssey not indulging in any of that is refreshing. It’s a safe space to get your JRPG on without sound and fury and melodrama and romantic leads that can’t admit that they’re romantic leads.

For people who are happy with the current state of the JRPG, then adding story is fine. For people who are not happy with the current state of the JRPG, the story in Etrian Odyssey Untold gives no reason to be optimistic that an Etrian Odyssey V story is going to be, well, good.

What storytelling in Etrian Odyssey V represents to me is Atlus filling in the spaces that they once left to the imagination, and likely with characters and stories I like less than those I concoct on my own. In a genre that is often so incredibly overstuffed with conversations and exposition and incidental dialogue, Etrian Odyssey doing away with all of that is bold. I don’t want them to walk back from that.

        • Shippoyasha

I don’t think there’s any worry there to be honest, considering the story was still treated as fairly optional. And I don’t think having some characterizations is bad. I don’t think even ‘bad’ stories are to a point where there’s this desperate need for the story to not exist. Just my two cents, though I get where you’re coming from with this series.

    • pekikuubik

As mentioned below, Shigeo Komori is in charge of EO5. He wrote EO1 and directed EO2, EO3 and both Untold games. He’s the one you should blame for the increasing amount of story in the series.

EO1 was directed by Kazuya Niinou, who moved on to direct 7th Dragon, Last Ranker and 7th Dragon 2020 (and is now at Square Enix, IIRC).

  • Fronkhead

The official website’s finally working: http://sq-atlus.jp/sq5/
I’m happy to see Koshiro in the composer’s seat as always, and Shigeo Komori is directing.

  • alhamega

They are showing some concept art.

    • Eder García

      top left image… wow

      • alhamega

I can see that despite the same character designer, EOV is ready to take a new direction for the series >v>

        • shytende

It seems my “X” prediction wasn’t that far off after all…

    • HarakiriKami

      bottom row is best row

      • TheGioG

That sketch on the bottom right corner though…
As the blunt, but honest man once said to the fair maiden:
        “Swiggity Swooty.”

        • HarakiriKami

          number 3 is the cookie

Here comes the hot stepper boys.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      mary sue?

    • Jon Silence

This concept art is from “me!me!me!” a way NSFW animated short by Studio Khara, the EVA rebuild guys.

      • Shippoyasha

Looks like someone is mistaking the nico streams.

    • Serge

Is not this from that MeMeMe! short?
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ithZmwEebVA

      • HarakiriKami

a good 5 minutes of the short is missing here lol

    • Shippoyasha

That looks like Stocking on upper left.

    • scdk

Mind sharing your source for this? As others mentioned, if this isn’t concept art from that Me!Me!Me! short, it’s strikingly similar.

      Probably not safe for work:

  • Blur Will

Hope they use PQ engine making this game

    • hng qtr

…isn’t the PQ engine the same of EO IV and Untold?

      • Ethan_Twain

        Yes it is

    • Jero

I hope they are developing a new engine for this game.

  • Michael Richardson

Finally. The spin-offs have been interesting experiments, but what I really want is an epic new main series entry. One that innovates yet stays true to the basic aspects that made me fall in love with the series to begin with. EOIV was masterful, so I have high hopes.

  • Dylan Anantha

Oh, thank god. Between the godawful Grimoires, U’s bland cast and forced party build, and classic mode content locked to the godawful story mode, I thought I would never be free of it. Interestingly enough, Persona Q does everything EOU tries to, but 50 times better. Fixed characters, but tons of customisation and party builds, much more difficult, zany antics but the characters aren’t bland. Plus Mitsuru is a Frontline Healer that actually makes sense.

I just hope V doesn’t downgrade to Grimoires.

    • hng qtr

      “much more difficult”
I haven’t played it yet but I find that hard to believe.

      • Dylan Anantha

Equipment is incredibly expensive, enemies hit much harder, characters now have elemental weaknesses and enemies have access to lots of debuffs.

Oh, and by the end of the first Stratum? It will cost 1000 gold to heal your party. 2nd Stratum armor can be priced up to 4000-5000, and FOEs have double the amount of health of EO’s FOEs.

    • I think they went with Grimoires over proper subclassing in EOU1 and 2 because the games simply weren’t balanced for subs.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Oh my god, Etrian Odyssey is becoming the Megaman of JRPGs.

3 main series, Persona Q, a dungeon spinoff, and ET5 now? Within 3 years?

    • HarakiriKami

Now it just needs an anime….

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        I’ll watch it

      • SetzerGabbiani

If they keep the quality animation of the untold series’ intros, I’m all for it.

        • HarakiriKami

          madhouse pls

    • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

I am more than happy if it really become the Megaman of Jrpg lol.^_^

Now, all we need is Sega also making 7th Dragon series as Megaman of Jrpg too lol.$_$

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        then they cancelled it

    • alhamega

PQ is definitely not a EO game. Besides, Atlus releases every EO game a year y’know, so is not all that surprising.

    • Because this specific genra has become so rare nowadays. Plus, let’s be honest, nothing is capable of rivaling Atlus in this field (Dark Spire is one of their best effort too). Just look at Demon Gaze for example; it cannot stand the comparison. This franchise brought it to a whole new level.

      • Shippoyasha

I actually disagree with that. Demon Gaze was a solid game and there has been many great dungeon crawlers out there. But sadly for western gamers, many haven’t been localized as well. No need to praise this series and crap on all others. That is seriously unnecessary. Dungeon crawl fans should help eachother. Not tear themselves apart.

        • I didn’t say it wasn’t a solid game. Please review what I wrote: it doesn’t hold up to the standards EO brought on the table. It’s a comparison thing. And OMG at your drama!! You make it sound like a bloodbath!

          • Shippoyasha

It practically is in so many other forums, it isn’t funny. heh

  • Go2hell66

you best believe its on 3ds

  • Long shot, but would be cool to see it on Wii U, but probably stick with 3DS. Could use a dungeon crawler and the gameplay can be retained perfectly.

    • Jero

It could work in the wiiu but the 3ds is were the fanbase is.

  • raygunner659

    AAAAAAAAAAAHHHH So excitteddddddddddd!!!!!
I wonder if we’re gonna get even more sci-fi this time around, gonna see more *certain EO3 and certain EO4 classes* magitek kinda stuff? Oh happy day! Yeahhhh!

    • KuroNathan

      more delicious robot waifus?

      • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

Man, I loved the Yggdroids even if I never really put them to good use.

  • CozyAndWarm

It would be really, really cool to see a fully realized console EO. Map-drawing can easily be accomodated on Wii U.

It bugs me how every Atlus series I love the most is constantly getting relegated to handheld only, while imo the worst series they make (Persona) is the only one they’re allowing for a console budget (and on an extremely small set of consoles as well) :/

    • Zeik56

While the game could work fine on a WiiU, I don’t think it would really benefit from being on a console as much as other Atlus games. It’s always going to be a first person dungeon crawler. You’ll get some more detailed enemies and better looking dungeon walls, but fundamentally it would be the exact same game that could be made on a handheld. (Otherwise it wouldn’t be EO anymore.) No point in screwing over the handheld fanbase just for some prettier graphics.

If they really wanted to do something like that it would be smarter to try out a different dungeon crawler. For example, an SMT spin-off that goes back to the series dungeon crawling roots.

      • Morgan Rodgers

I think it would be cool if they released a simultaneous 3ds/WiiU version; the WiiU wouldn’t be a full-fledged console version, just some prettied up graphics and you could transfer your save back and forth between console and handheld.

    • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

I prefer it being on a handheld.

  • StarkEx

I’d love to see a map-creating feature this time. Not just drawing, but actually creating your own dungeons with the touchscreen to share with other players would be the best thing ever.

    • CozyAndWarm

This… is actually a really cool idea

  • More EO is always a good thing. But I am intrigued by why they didn’t specify the targeted console. What are you hiding Atlus??

  • Adrian Duran

    GG SEGA

now work on SMT x FE

  • Aemette

What extravagance! With the unveiling of EOU 2, I wasn’t expecting news of this game for some time. But this. Is. Awesome! New classes! New Dungeons! New monsters! A whole nother world to conquer. 5. Five. Cinco!

  • DrShimo

With the remakes of the first two games in this series as well, are the Etrian Odyssey games worth buying and playing? I enjoyed the dungeon sprawling and mapping in the demos I’ve played, but not sure how old that would get with a fully game (the story also seemed interesting some too).

    • Absolutely. The dungeons get more complex and the enemies more tricky the further you go, so if you like the core gameplay it doesn’t generally get stale

  • Mark Lengod

Really hyped! Wondering if they’ll implement a story like EOUs or third person animations in battle like Persona Q.

    • Aemette
      • Mark Lengod

I actually started to believe they would give up on EO after Persona Q was announced. So good we’ll get another entry, a remake and a crossover soon!

        • Aemette

Ever since I played the 2nd entry in the series and read about the “5 islands”, I believed there would at least be 5 games in the series. But I never imagined this series to start growing as much as it has. More and more people have come to know this series and, while I might disagree with certain remakes and methods, I can’t get enough of these games. I’ve bought all the games thus far and I’ll keep on buying them.

          • Guillermo Oliva III

There are 5 islands? I thought, there would be 7 titles of series due to “Seven Yggdrasils” as a result of there being 7 EO titles. . . . . aghh, I am confused :S

          • Aemette

Yeah, it’s confusing. EO2 mentioned 5 islands but I think it was Untold1 that said there were 7 trees so I’d go with the latter, since it’s most recent. Whatever the case, nothing wrong with more adventures~

          • Guillermo Oliva III

Yup, I agree and more dangerous FOE :3

          • Aemette

I swear I know that those things are in every game yet they still make me scream out of fear >_> I just really don’t want to fight them when I know they can mow down my team.

          • Guillermo Oliva III

Yeah, those FOE is what makes EO dungeon-crawling heat up the moment of risking yourself to lose your progress by seeing if you are prepared to charge forward with a open free assault to earn a drop that can upgrade your “equipment” further or earn extra exp and expand your knowledge of the monster itself. Furthermore, I usually save before I initiate a frontal attack(or a surprise attack).

          • Aemette

I’ve lost track of the times I’ve accidentally walked into a FOE. I see them right in front of me. I know I should avoid them. But it’s as if something always possesses me to walk forward and engage them. I spam the run button till some miracle happens or I die :/

          • Guillermo Oliva III

Yeah or if three members of your team dies and only two are left with no SP left to use and are low on hp. Also, you are stuck in a corner with no “return to city” or “exit labyrinth” item XD

          • Guillermo Oliva III

If there are 7 trees, I would like to see 7 titles of the main series of EO! :D

        • KuroNathan

Oh my god that was my biggest fears after sega bought atlus

        • Guillermo Oliva III

Well, we helped expand the series by purchasing the first 4 main titles within the series. So, these “Untold” remakes are like a anniversary edition for selling successfully within the market, although most of the hardcore players dislike the Untold series . . . . ehh, either way~ I enjoy the series and it would be a shame if Sega interfere with Atlus pro-longing series of EO in some sort of unusual manner.

  • Mavalex

    The mapping never stops

    • raygunner659

      Mapping. Mapping never changes.

  • Wafflenaut

Let’s see if they can outdo 3 with this one.

    • Blesmi

Even if they don’t, at least we’ll get Untold 3. Remake of best EO game here we go!

  • KuroNathan

when I see that teaser image all I can think of is. Etrian Odyssey…. IN SPAAAAAAACE

  • Kristoffer Brandberg

Well, I hope we get to see the Bushi-class again. I miss those beasts!

  • Ps1 Cloud

trailers with no game play is not a trailer

  • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

    Please be Wii U

  • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

Hopefully it’s 3DS and the lack of console was just an oversight.

  • sakanaとkoeda

I wish I was the paid intern to put this together *hugs and waters world tree with my tears*
The characters, I hope they’re beurtiful.

  • Heartlesswithaheart

    HYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYPE!

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

Hooray! Finally a new sequel instead of a spinoff.

    • Guillermo Oliva III

I know how you feel and yeah, we all have been waiting to see the new main series of EO to announce in a trailer of a sneak peek~ ;b

  • No matter the system (New 3ds por favor) Nintendo shall get… MY MONEY!!!

    • Satori Satya

Well I guess Ninty will get that money if they release the game in a bundle with the n3DS.

Otherwise, Atlus should be getting most of it.

      • Guillermo Oliva III

Yup, Atlus has every right to do whatever they want with Etrian Odyssey and just like “Demon Soul” they decided to bring to the US instead of making it “Japan only” title. So, that risk made a huge success for the “Soul” series.

  • Well, I guessed the X and D teasers would be Etrian Odyssey III Untold and Etrian Odyssey V. Glad to know I got at least ONE right. xD

  • wahyudil

don’t really like EO … too hardcore for me …

I still don’t get it what its mean between X and D(ungeon) and Ettrian Odyssey

  • Raregroove

Hm, Yggdrasil reaches beyond the planet’s surface….
    Etrian: A Space Odyssey

    • Guillermo Oliva III

It looks amazing and I wonder too . . . . is it going space now? is something evil lies on top of the sacred mother tree? the “odds” are unknown for us >_<! (tee-hee~ ;b )

  • Guillermo Oliva III

I enjoy EO a lot and the series raises up my imagination to think of each one of my team member personality and how they would journey the harsh exploration within each Labyrinth that leads to extreme danger and the “odds” that awaits for them to go up against . . . . .

  • KuroNathan

Hmmmmm, maybe the yggdrasil this time is a space elevator? Considering EO’s theme of post-apocalyptic world and each yggdrasil has been an attempt to fix the world or save humanity it would make sense that there would be an attempt to leave the planet.

Except for EO 3’s yggdrasil. that one is weird and fell ontop of some sort of icky alien thing.

    Ew.

This is a stretch, but it would be so cool if this game was on Wii U and featured amiibo support. Imagine buying a cute little figure of your favorite class and being able to store your Guild Card info inside of it! Then you can share it with your friends just by touching your amiibo to their Gamepad.
