One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X is pretty much like a pirates version of Jump Ultimate Stars featuring the Straw Hat Pirates and other legendary characters like Portgas D. Ace and Whitebeard. The 3DS game is getting a new update that makes it compatible with amiibo figures. [Thanks, Game Jouhou.]

According to the report, One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X will get an update later this winter that will make it compatible with amiibo figures.

While there aren’t any details as far as what else the update will bring, certain characters can get special costumes after having an amiibo linked to the game. So far, we know that Luffy will work with Mario and Luigi, Zoro with Link, and Sanji with Fox’s amiibo.

Of all the games to get amiibo support and get Nintendo character costumes i never thought a One Piece game would be the one. Thats really strange I’m not the only one thinking that’s strange right?

    • Andy Abramo

Well in japan, One piece is like #1 in everything… So for them it isn’t strange.

      • James Robert Thompson

Attack on Titan is #1 in a number of places now-a-days (though One Piece is still towing a modest lead), but then again you just have to see how much that’s cross-promoted with everything to see how unsurprising this really is…

        • British_Otaku

Attack on Titan sold the second most volumes for two years in a row (particularly close this year – even if One Piece released less volumes than usual), but even if it is a hit, it isn’t going to a long lasting and all encompassing hit in the same way.

Also, we are only focusing on manga volume sales, not merchandise and other media so it is a limited vision of how well a series is doing. Detective Conan’s manga don’t sell as highly as One Piece (Conan was last ranked at 25th place), however it has been getting games and movies frequently since before One Piece and also has a long running anime. As well as most of the series have done to chart in the top thirty, Conan and One Piece are in a whole different class to the rest of them for exposure, popularity and influence.

I do love all three series though and enjoy seeing new stuff shake up the charts.

In Japan, One Piece gets promoted in literally all kinds of products.

    • British_Otaku

EA Sports games on the GameCube had some Nintendo content and recent hits like Monster Hunter and Taiko no Tatsujin reach out to various different groups for content.

It is more surprising that this is the first anime licensed game that comes to mind on the 3DS with them.

  • Bowser Blackbeard.. ZEHAHAHAHAHAHAHA~!

When’s Zero Suit Samus/Wii Fit Trainer Nami and Robin?
That’s obviously going to be a thing.

    I hope Mingo gets something.

makes you wonder why siliconera didnt upload the full scan them selves.

      • Someone complained about the Sabo spoiler last time, so I’m guessing that had something to do with it.

    • Jadfish

… so what is Sabo’s power? I think I’m about 100 chapters behind

      • FlameEmperor

He uses Haki and he now has Ace’s devil fruit power.

      • Rayhan PromisedGallery

he mainly uses Haki for “Dragon’s claw technique”, Pipe as weapon, and now he has Mera Mera no Mi

    • Linkmstr

Luffy can be Mario or Luigi, Zoro can be Link, and Sanji can be Fox. Zoro’s and Sanji’s makes a lot of sense since Link uses a sword and Fox mostly kicks in Smash Bros. Luffy as Mario or Luigi just made me want a New3DS and the game even more.

      • Blaz

I’m waiting on Nami and the Zero Suit Samus Amiibo.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      I love this!!!!

    • AuraGuyChris

Don’t recall Fox ever being a comedic womanizer…

  • Kuhile Brodeur

This is kinda the coolest thing ever.

  • Adrian Duran

One consumes fruit for power and the other consumes mushrooms

  • Hagaren

Luffigi, Zonk, and Fonji join the battle.

  • HershelLousyton

Chopper as Kirby and Robin as…Robin and I’m gold.

    • Franky Oda Abraham

Though Robin (Smash) name in Japan is Reflet. Weird I know….

  • Nagi

    wii fit robin? XD

    • Benjamin Tyler

      All of my yes.

While this news in itself doesn’t excite me at all, the implications do. I was always under the impression that amiibo would only ever apply to Nintendo IP, and this piece of news shows otherwise. Hopefully this leads to more and more games having unlockable stuff if you own an amiibo, so long as it doesn’t turn into holding back important and cool stuff if you don’t have an amiibo.

    • British_Otaku

The implications are exciting in a sense, but games prior to this would just have a Nintendo released game feature those costumes like EA’s NBA Street V3 on the GameCube or Monster Hunter 4 on the 3DS: http://s3.amazonaws.com/kidzworld_photo/images/2010716/41f78db0-2367-4f43-bc5e-94f087418aa8/5193_6.jpg

This is a case where Bandai Namco made an agreement with Nintendo, but the content is exclusively for people with a New 3DS (for now) and certain Amiibo.

Monster Hunter is stuffed with side material, but never asked a player to pay for the content once or buy Amiibo for Sonic, Mario or Detective Conan for your cat: http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140204013727/monsterhunter/images/8/82/MH4-Palico_Armor_Render_002.png

      • Jormangund

I see, I see. That pretty much dashed my hopes of amiibo unlocking some sort of special exclusive content for nearly all games on Nintendo platforms or something. Ah well, dreaming’s free at least.

        • British_Otaku

The era of dreams will never end, perhaps some companies will become more keen to approach Nintendo for Amiibo compatibility if they see it taking off.

Still I insist that every we did get more Nintendo special exclusive content, even across nearly all games, you would still need to jump through more hoops for that content.

.. That said, I would buy eight Captain Falcons if Ace had that costume.

      • Linkmstr

I actually sort of lost it at the Detective Conan costume. (I didn’t know there was a costume like that.) XD

        • British_Otaku

The Japanese releases are stuffed with bonus content like that, which is part of why I’m less curious about the western releases even if a great game is a great game.

I think the closest we got to quirky stuff like that was with the MGS and MH crossover material for both series.

  • Ralala

Ohh! A third party game with no ties to a Nintendo franchise! Now give us amiibo FROM Non-Nintendo franchise games, like Sonic and Mega Man from Smash. I want a Bayonetta amiibo.

    • Ryuuken

Sonic and Mega Man are coming out next February. So far, the Amiibo are only going to be those represented in Smash. February’s release will bring the total to 29 characters, which means there are still 23 more to be released (If they make separate ones for the Miis, but will most likely make one for Mewtwo).

  • DurrD

This is the problem with Amiibo so far.
Only ‘X’ figures will actually get you content. Own any of the other 30 ‘Y’ figures and you are shit out of luck.
Im interested to see how Nintendo/3rd party are gonna combat this.
Otherwise Mario/Link will be compatible with tons of games while your Marth/WFT/Villager etc are sitting collecting dust

    • doubleO7

Well, they all work with Smash at least. But yeah, support for other games will be sorely lacking for many figures until another game in their own series comes out.

      • HarakiriKami

Its less so that until their game comes out and moreso until another amiibo line comes out.

    • subsamuel01

I have a feeling that Smash Bros. Is the only game in which Amiibo will play a significant role. Everything else its probably going to be cosmetic just like this, which is a shame.

      • HarakiriKami

You can only write one set of data to the amiibo at a time.

Ergo if you want your Smash Amiibo to do something else in another game , the character you saved to it will be deleted.

So its more like Smash is the Hub game, and then it has several other games where it unlocks things in. That’s how it works. So when nintendo introduces a new line for a specific game it’ll do something in that game, and then those figures unlock stuff in the surrounding titles.

    • HarakiriKami

Nah. Nintendo’s going to pull a hyrule warriors with them.

  • J_Joestar

Hope more 3DS games start getting Amiibo support,

  • Slayven19

Well this is interesting, gives me more hope for the game that I know we’ll get anyway lol.

  • KidKojack

    “I’m-a gonna be the Pirate-a King-a!”

  • Ryuuken

I need a video/image of all costumes, haha

  • I want Power Suit/Zero Suit Nami, Wii Fit/Reflet Robin, Franky Kong, Pac-Chopper, Akainu Bowser, Tashigi Lucina… the list can go on, and there probably will be repeats of Amiibo costumes for the other characters. Maybe…

  • Gon Janken

A new challenger: Monkey D. Luffy
    Super Smash Bros.
    That is all.

  • DRIG

haha Zoro is perfect for link, i wonders where he would get an extra master sword :P
