Regeria Hope Is Like Phoenix Wright With Female Leads

By Chris Priestman . December 29, 2014 . 5:30pm

Golden Game Barn has released the first episode of its courtroom drama visual novel Regeria Hope for free on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

It’s similar to the Phoenix Wright games in that the action takes place in a court of law, where you call on witnesses, cross-examine evidence, and can jump in with objections when you feel it’s necessary. The main difference from Phoenix Wright is that the lead characters are women rather than men.

“I’m a HUGE fan of the Phoenix Wright series, and I’ve always wanted to make video games,” writes Golden Game Barn. “So I wanted to make this game with a female lead in honor of Phoenix Wright, but I wanted to add my own spin to it. I’m planning to later include more mechanics to differentiate this from Phoenix Wright, but for the first episode, I wanted to make an episode that longtime Phoenix Wright fans would enjoy, while giving them the ability to really affect the story.”

In the first episode of Regeria Hope, you’re defending a husband who is being trialled after his wife was poisoned at their wedding reception. You can interrupt witnesses as they give their statements but you have to be wary of the time limit you’re given to resolve the case.

Jury members that you’ll have to appease will be added in later episodes, as well as other features which, as the developer said, will further differentiate Regeria Hope from Phoenix Wright.

You can download the first episode of Regeria Hope on for free.

  • Sounds interesting, I’ll have to check it out. More Phoenix Wright-styled games are always a plus to me.

  • I’d be much more interested if it didn’t look exactly like genderbent fan-art of Phoenix Wright. :/

    • Souffrir

That’s totally not fair. Genderbent fan-art of Phoenix Wright would have more interesting hairstyles.

  • Pdugna

This isn’t just “like” phoenix wright with female leads, it’s basically Phoenix Wright animations with female voices. It doesn’t even look to try anything at all different.

  • Slayven19

Looks exactly like phoenix wright…I’ll most likely play it but damn the resemblance is uncanny.

  • Tenabrus

    obvious Phoenix Wright clone.
    obvious Miles Edgeworth clone
    obvious “Judge” clone.

they even ripped off the pose, are they even trying?

    • aizen310

Well… they certainly tried to rip off something.

  • Linkmstr

…Why? You might as well send it to Capcom as an idea and then make it into a future Ace Attorney game. *sigh*
Also, in Trials and Tribulations you can play as Mia Fey so technically there was a female lead in one case…

    • Teddy

Not to mention Athena in Dual Destinies.

    • raitouniverse

I do hope you’re kidding because that would never happen.

    • Slayven19

In 2 cases actually, the prologue chapter counts.

    • GH56734

That’s not an original idea. They brought nothing new in the gameplay department. Aside from the concept being weak and not quite living up even to prologue cases.

GS2: Magatama, playing lawyer for a real criminal
      GS3: longer cases, multiple protagonists
GS DS: forensics investigation (touch-screen/3D segments)
Kabun Shun Trader: GS mechanics with a different profession
Harvey Birdman: flawed licensed game, still original by playing with how the defendant is always innocent/accused of murder
GS4: observing body language in cross-examinations
      GS5: observing emotions in cross-examinations
GK1: crime reconstitution, playing detective, logic
GK2: expanding on GK1, logic chess
      GSxLayton: mob trials
      GS Meiji Era: dual cross-examinations

      and just for fun:
      Danganronpa: emotions, time element

This one, on the other hand?
Is it that original of an idea? (after all, Mia and Athena exist)
Also, since when were games having more or less merit based on the sex of the protagonist? Presenting the game with that as the defining characteristic (to hide the lack of everything else) is a pathetic thing to do.

  • Clay

There’s no way this is legal. Better download the demo before Capcom sends in the lawyers.

  • Adrian Duran

Seems like Phoenix Wright with baroque music and Chaos Wars VA

  • John Hayabusa

Games with great female leads always interest me. I am going to give it a shot.

  • BizarreJelly

What is Mia Fey, Athena Cykes.

Getting very “slow news day” around here Siliconera.

    • Crevox

Welcome to any post by Chris Priestman

    • British_Otaku

Well, they did share a statement that “So I wanted to make this game with a female lead in honor of Phoenix Wright, but I wanted to add my own spin to it. I’m planning to later include more mechanics to differentiate this from Phoenix Wright, but for the first episode, I wanted to make an episode that longtime Phoenix Wright fans would enjoy, while giving them the ability to really affect the story.”

It is an element which the developer considers to separate their game from the crowd and other AA games, regardless of whether they delved into it and it is definitely more headline-worthy than “Regeria Hope is like Phoenix Wright but with eventually some different mechanics”.

  • Lissomia

I’d also be super interested in this if… well, if the sprites weren’t the exact art of the ones from Ace Attorney games. Like, the cute blonde girl has the exact same face and shirt high collar as Franziska von Karma and the main girl has the same face as… Apollo, I think?

If they got their own art this would be super cute and cool but for now I don’t… think…. that it’s quite legal if they plan to have the game to be paid for? :)

  • Cool~. I think I even like the designs and artstyle a bit more (just a little). I’ll certainly give it a shot.

    • Shippoyasha

Ouch. That sounds kind of harsh when the original AA artist is pretty legendary talent..

      • This is just more my taste~. I like certain parts of that artist’s style a whole lot though. ^u^

        • Shippoyasha

Well to be fair, I guess the older Phoenix Wright art doesn’t show off very well with the pixel art. It does look aged compared to the newer stuff + the artbook.

          • Oh, haha, I was thoroughly entrenched in the artbook once upon a time. There’s a lot to appreciate there~.

  • the lawyer looks like Rin wearing business suit

    • Sai=Hofilena

      Rin Tohsaka: Ace Magus

srsly though.. that’s also the first thing i thought lol.

  • Lazulis

The tracing of the poses made me lose interest…i mean the art’s good, but…

  • ReMeDyIII

I think the voice of the protagonist in that video needs work. The mic quality is poor. I’d argue the game is better off not having ANY voices if that’s the kind of quality we have to hear.

I’m also not a fan of the protagonist’s costume design. First, her breasts need to be bigger. I’m being serious. Look at Mia Fey from Phoenix Wright. The target audience for these games is generally going to be male, so you need the big breasts, period. Also, is Regeria part Indian? It’s that headband. It’s one color and feather away from looking like Tiger Lilly from Peter Pan.

    • Justin Graham

      Not sure if serious.

    • Addy

      Are yoooou… kidding?

    • You really lost me at “big breasts”. LOL WTF DUDE/DUDETTE. LOL

  • Envatta

I adore Ace Attorney, but this just looks like a Chinese bootleg.

    Feena Wong: Loquacious Lawyer!

  • MrAptronym

I don’t like how closely they are aping the ace attorney style. I mean its neat they want to add mechanics and change things up, they should change the poses around a bit too? It could help to make the main character feel less like Phoenix Wright but a woman.

  • Strain42

It needs a bit of work. The actual visual design of the setup (like buttons and stuff) looks kind of clunky and awkward. and I’d love it if the characters had a bit of animation to them. They’re not bad designs, they just don’t seem very lively, and having the characters be lively and watching them going into their poses is one of the biggest parts of the AA series. Yes, I know this isn’t the AA series and I am all for this game trying to do its own thing, but this needs some work.

If they do a Kickstarter and promise to add some more animations, better quality sound, and put a bit more work into the layout designs, I will HAPPILY give them my money.

So to the developer, if you’re reading this, keep at it. I’m certainly intrigued by your premise, and I’m liking Regeria as a character so far.

  • icup ✔️

why is she wearing a workout sweatband in court…

    • Souffrir

That’s not a headband, it’s a circlet. Her name’s Regeria, clearly she’s of royal heritage.

  • Kalis Konig

I mean could they have at least tried to be original in at least a few aspects? Using the objection pose is just disgusting if you ask me. I guess it is okay as a free game though.

  • PowerSerg

Downloading it on my phone, I want to check it out.

  • Seta Soujiro

“Admire”? “In honor”? “Inspiration”? How about “blatant and shameless ripoff”? Hope it bombs. Don’t know about the rest of you, but I find this dishonest to say the least. Could have tried harder to differientiate but I guess it is easier to mimic all the way. Disgraceful.

    • HershelLousyton

…A liiiittle too angry towards a free game you don’t need to pay for to play, don’t you think? I’ve seen far more blatant inspirations with far less soul put into them, and speaking as a massive Ace Attorney fan I don’t really care one way or another if something rips it off, or makes a game heavily inspired by it. I care if someone rips it off well. I see this game no differently than I see Aviary Attorney. Blatantly inspired? Sure. Do I really care? Fuck no, the more Ace Attorney-like things the better.

Also I think it will be a little difficult to this “fooking disgraceful” game to ‘bomb’ when the game appears to have been made on the developer’s free-time and folks are allowed to play it for free.

      • Pedro Furtado

While I agree with most of what you say, I think the developer plans to release later episodes as paid, so yeah, I think he has intents of making money on it.

I definitely don’t see it as dishonest or anything like that, but people’s reactions are pretty much expected and they could’ve done a more subtle work.

EDIT: I don’t mean to say that making money is evil. People need to eat while doing what they love.

        • Addy

Even then, I’m sure it’s not like the developer plans to make you spend anything crazy on the episodes.

          • Justin Graham

While the prices may not be outlandish, it’s still paying for what amounts to a lazy-looking Phoenix Wright clone being sold piecemeal.

          • Addy

            Then you don’t buy it.

  • Adi Gondo Hartono

I think it will be a lot better received if they declare it a fan game rather than their own IP. Doing the latter just feels dishonest.

  • César H. Sandoval

    LEGeria BOOT: Brilliant Barrister!

  • So its just a genderbent Ace Attorney. She’s even in the same pose.

  • Charles Parker

Wow, this looks incredibly lame. It looks like a Chinese knockoff of Ace Attorney.

  • 9breaker

Im sorry i get that you’re inspired by pheonix wright but this is a little too much that it feels… distasteful.

  • Natalie Rath

I mean the game looks fine and stuff BUT THE VOICE ACTRESS sounds so HOLLOW AND DEAD to me!

I mean hearing Mia Fey and Franziska von Karma shout Objection was amazing. And they have so much force in it.

This? The voice actress sounds like she’s dying.

  • tom

    No thanks.

  • Aurizen

This is off putting for me… epically the timelimit and voice over….

  • Justin Graham

This feels more like a rip-off than an homage. Like an off-brand Phoenix Wright.

  • Maria Maasaa

Guys, what are you doing!? You can’t criticize this game! It has women in it! And it’s made by a woman (possibly)! We all know that when a game has a female lead or a female developer, it can never be criticized. Not the bad voice over. Not the bad UI. Nothing. Shame on you. Shame on you ALL.

  • Notquitesure?

Well it does have a jury so thats good.

  • Guest

why it has a fucking timelimit and the quality looks like they just put pictures on it then bam! a rip-off x

  • Ooohhh…When I first saw this and read the title I got very excited but…it is TOO similar. I mean, they even took Phoenix’s signature point…There is a difference in being inspired and just being unimaginative and lazy.

I do love the fact that it has female leads, though.

  • Nonscpo

Not interested Siliconera but thanks anyway. Hey for anybody looking for an Ace Attorney style game, then check this out:

    • Shippoyasha

Oh my god at that artstyle. ha!

    • British_Otaku

Sure it has been covered by Siliconera at least three times in the last month including an interview, but yes that does have higher production values and fit into the AA style of game.

    • GH56734

There’s also Kabu Shun Trader for DS, also by Capcom, where you instead play as someone who sells goods and negociate prices … AA-style over the top objections, proofs, emotional backstory and all.
Too bad it’s still in Japanese :P

    • Charles Parker

Dear lord, its like Hatoful Boyfriend meets Ace Attorney. Its unique in its own way to be sure.

    • Gold_Ultima

“I’m not interested in this game, so now allow me to hock this other incredibly similar game that’s begging for money.”

      • Nonscpo

Hey as long as the game is fun :D

  • Tarkovsky

I would’ve been a little bit more critical if it weren’t available for free or was asking for money via KS. But since it is free, I’m totally fine with it. In fact, it’s an example of what an indie is and should be. Creating a game, be it an original idea, an inspired one or even a homage, out of one’s passion, spare time and money without the aid of a publisher or funding by backers. Another great example of this would be Rokko-chan, a free Megaman/Rockman inspired game available for all to play on the interwebs.

  • scdk

Dear Siliconera writers, I just want to say that I think your articles are respectably written and for the most part, seem informative, unbiased, and succinct. However, they contrast sharply with the quality of reader comments — even my own, I’m sure — which makes reading this site a strangely conflicting experience.

    • M’iau M’iaut

This is a ren’py game which usually means at best one or two people writing their game within the engine, on their own time and yes very much just for fun (or free).

If by now folks don’t understand the parameters of games like this or those with RPG Maker, there is only so much which can be done. But I appreciate your concern for the site. Thanks.

  • Priley

Sad to say that I tend to agree with those who are finding issues with this game. Granted, the Phoenix Wright series sets a high bar.

And rather than critique points that have already been brought up by others, I’ll just say that I’ll be interested to see if and how the dev breathes originality into the game via later episodes.

In short, while I share the concerns of some other posters, I’m more than willing to see how the dev evolves this game before making any kind of final judgment.

  • Shippoyasha

I’m not against the idea, but just copying the mechanics isn’t going to cut it. The thing that makes Ace Attorney click is in the writing quality and they have a dragon to go up against in that regard. That being said, I enjoyed a few fanmade Ace Attorney chapters in Youtube. But it really comes to show that it’s going to be tough replicating the writing quality of even mid/low tier AA chapters.

  • You know, instead of having Ace Attorney with the genders switched, why not create something different, hmm?
This only perpetuates the stereotype that women are only powerful when they stomp on men.

    • Gold_Ultima

As someone who is anti-feminist and anti-MRA, I honestly don’t see how you can draw this conclusion other than to say you’re just looking for reasons to be upset. Hell, the first case is about proving a man isn’t evil…

      • See: Female thor, Ms. Marvel, and a bunch of other examples I probably missed out on. I supposed I could’ve worded the comment better, though.

        • Gold_Ultima

I just meant I don’t see how this is stomping on men, or how this reinforces the idea that women are unpowerful otherwise. It feels like a rather large logic leap to go that route.

  • AFatHouseCat

Guessing Regeria Hope won’t be handling copyright cases…

  • Gaisaph

Funny how the Trilogy of the Phoenix Wright game that was on the GBA, looks more appealing than this. Also the characters in this screenshot looks “meh” and the judge makes me want to forget this game ever existed.

I would love for a female ace attorney game though. Imagine playing Mia.

    • GH56734

      Psst. 3-1, 3-4, 5 do exist.

So much for the novelty factor then (the “future mechanics to distance the game from AA” simply don’t exist at this point, how the devs defined it is simply “a clone of another game whose main defining characteristic that matters is what the characters have in the crotch” which is frankly disgusting).

Let’s just look at it as the cheap rip-off fan game that it is.

  • PreyMantis

While at it, what the fuck kind of name is Regeria?

  • Man, you see this kind of thing all the time now. If only Capcom understood what “multiplatform” meant. Then maybe they’d be in a better position today.

Instead of having, say, Ace Attorney fans make their own fangame versions on the platforms they want to play like here. Or countless Monster Hunter fans – and would-be fans – who don’t want to deal with handhelds. And of course, all the fans who keep making their own Mega Man games…

But nah, that’s cool. Keep losing business, Capcom. You gave people all they needed. If you’re not going to make the games we want, we will. I get it.

    • GH56734

AA isn’t dead yet, you know…

  • Raine

  • Reiswindy

Will wait till it’s complete to try it out.

  • Yan Zhao

This is pretty much a full ripoff lol. Same hud, system, style, everything.

  • chroma816

I don’t know if you could say it’s “like” Phoenix Wright. It *is* Phoenix Wright.

  • With smaller busts! :(

  • axemtitanium

But does it have giant anthropomorphic birds?

  • Disappointed Friend

Not sure how well it plays based off the color/font choice for the preview. I think in the end it’d be just a better exp to play the original…

  • Wrathful

You know what? I wouldn’t mind the game even if it just copies Phoenix Wright as long as the storyline is great. No way could they even dare to attempt to copy the storyline. This game really is little bit too identical you might even as well call it a fan mod of Phoenix Wright rather than its own game.

  • James Reilly

You could have at least changed the pose if you seriously wanted to make the game have a different initial impression then ‘Ace Attorney with Female Protag’.

  • Hi All, I’m the developer of Regeria Hope, it’s been very exciting to have been featured on this site, as a one man band dev, I couldn’t dream of actually being picked up by a website. So thanks, Chris! I have no idea how you found my game, but it’s great people are looking at it.

I’ve been reading many of the comments on this site, and I’m glad to see some people happy to play the game, and it’s a shame the game made many people angry. I’ve been working on this game in my spare time before and after work, using money saved up to pay for art and help with sound effects. I agree that there’s a lot I can do to make the game stand on it’s own two feet, after a year of a couple of hours a week of work, I wanted to release this for free to see if people would like a game like this.

I realize without video, some people aren’t going to believe me, but if later episodes are allowed to happen, I want to include story-lines which test how corrupt you are willing to be in order to save people, how much money it would take for you to throw cases, or how willing you are to find the truth in a case. I would like to make cases more dynamic, where testimonies play out in front of you and you need to object to stall for time and to give yourself time to think about what evidence you need to show your jury. I want to give each jury member a “belief” bar that you will need to need to stop from hitting zero or else the case will be lost straight away. I want to track how much money you have earned so you can use it to buy evidence (which may or may not be forged) to prove your client not guilty. This is very much one of my first games in Ren’py, so I’m learning much just from having this one free game out, and I’m looking forward to seeing what more can be done within the engine. The last thing I would want to do is just copy everything from PW and ask for money for it. I want to see where I can take my own game and make it different.

I’m a big fan of the Phoenix Wright series, I’ve played through the series 3 times, just finished PW Vs PL, and I’m playing through the HD version of the games now. The last thing I want to do is annoy fans of the series. I just liked the series so much I wanted to make my own games because of it. I hope other fans of the series get a kick out of this free game while waiting for GS5/PW5, and if other people see this game and want to get PW instead, that’s great.

TL;DR – Big Fan of PW, free game to learn Ren’py and hopefully make people happy, hope you enjoy it. The last thing I would want to do is just copy everything from PW and ask for money for it. I want to see where I can take my own game and make it different.

    • Areuto

If this lives up to being as great as the ace attorney series, you got you’re self a long time fan and customers…. No pressure :D!

      • No pressure… 0_0

Geez, I hope it will be as good as the AA series, Shu Takumi and the AA team have certainly set the bar high. Thanks for trying the game out!

    • Justin Graham

I’ll admit that I was skeptical at first and I’ve come off as harsh. Knowing the situation as I do now, I apologize for that. I’m sure you’ve put in a lot of effort into this and I’d be interested to play it myself.

      • Thanks Justin, I hope you like the game, there’s still a lot of work to be done, but seeing the reaction to the first episode has shown me that people are very passionate about AA and really like law/puzzle games, as long as you put all your effort into it and make it unique enough. It’s made the early mornings and late nights worth it.

    • katamari damacy

Sounds very ambitious. Keep up the good work!
Keep the story just as a good old fashioned linear courtroom drama as the Phoenix Wright series and it should work out. No need for additional mechanics (which might be gimmicky or detract from the experience). Also, please keep in mind the legal system you are using. The legal system in Phoenix Wright is the Japanese legal system where there is no constitutional protection of “innocent until proven guilty”. This affects how trials are presented and who has the burden of proof. In Pheonix Wright, the defense had the burden of proof to seemingly exonerate the accused (which often lead to somebody, usually a material witness, admitting to the crime and somehow getting judged in a trial that they weren’t a party to), but in Canada and the USA, the prosecution in a criminal case has the burden of proof to prove that the accused did it.
The strength of Pheonix Wright has always been the writing and characters. If you’re a good scenario writer, you won’t need to rely on more complex mechanics such as convincing a jury (which, if the jury does their deliberation according to the judge’s instruction on weight of evidence or what can or cannot be considered, would be exactly the same as if a judge decided), or waddling through potential corruption (which is unethical and would get your lawyer character disbarred IRL, not to mention if you plan follow ups, it forces the scenario writer to write 2 scenarios where the lawyer PC is ethical or unethical)

      • Hi there Katamari Damacy,

Thanks for your feedback, I’ll certainly take your feedback on board. The main points I’ll be using the jury for is for the speeches you’ll be making to the jury at the end of each trial, along with a way to handle when you get a rebuttal wrong, since the story might just continue if you present the wrong evidence. I can see how the writing will become a lot harder for multiple stories, especially for a one man band, but I’m hoping that the payoff will be worth the extra effort.

    • PowerSerg

You have some very great ideas, I actually haven’t played any of the PW games but I have played your game and enjoy it so i’m a lot more likely to check out the games now. I haven’t “Beat” the first chapter yet but I just lost for the first time so I plan to ring in the new year by beating it tomorrow.

I think it was telegraphed intentionally but changer being jordan was an obvious sort of thing. I don’t know how well the representation of a trans person is done with changer since I haven’t got far enough in questioning to see it but I do hope a none villain trans person is in the future of this series if you do continue it. I intend to do a full review on my blog so other people move to check out your game. I think from what i’ve played so far and read from you that it has all the makings to be a very solid series. Your ideas and game has me excited and thinking of my own ideas and that’s always a fantastic thing.

      • Thanks PowerSerg,

I’m intending to have people from all walks of life, Jordan was a sociopath that changed her name and took pills in order to hide who she really was from the police, in order to get away with her crime. She was so consumed by hatred, she saw such a meaningful change as a stepping stone to her revenge, which she planned for 4 years, just waiting for an opportunity.

In future episodes, there will be transgender characters, but it certainly won’t be as blatantly obvious and evil as this case. They just have friends that knew them before their change of identity.

I hope you do try out the PW series, it’s a great series! My favorite one is the third one, I feel it has the best story, and some of the best music in the series.

        • PowerSerg

Oh that’s great to hear, It’s fantastic to hear your already planning a lot of variety in characters. I’ve slacked today and haven’t picked up my phone to play but I should be done soon enough got a bit of traveling to do. When my review comes out do you have a twitter or anything you want me pull out for you?

Would you recommend I start form the first game or at the third? I have a friend who said they would let me borrow them so I intend to check them out if this semester doesn’t wreck me.

          • Sure, I’d love to see your review, my twitter tag is on my site. I’d recommend starting at the beginning, since the final case of the PW 1-3 series relies so much on what happens in the first two games. They are all good, but that last one ties all the plot lines from the first two everything together so well.

    • Gold_Ultima

The only thing I’ll say is you shouldn’t let people who weren’t even willing to give the game a glance to find out how wrong they are dictate your creative vision so I hope that doesn’t happen and that you don’t let their negativity affect you.

  • Lalum

  • Γεώργιος Αρχαιοκαπηλίδης

    At least it’s a free game, therefore I won’t complain for being a rip-off.
