The People Behind Banjo-Kazooie Unveil A New 3D Platformer Called Yooka-Laylee

Playtonic Games, the recently-formed British studio comprised of ex-Rare staff, have unveiled the 3D platformer Yooka-Laylee, which they previously teased. A Kickstarter campaign has also been launched to raise £175,000 in funding to bring the game to Windows, Mac, Linux, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii U.

Yooka-Laylee is a collect-‘em-up that very much serves as a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie. You play as two characters: Yooka the chameleon and Laylee the bat who rides upon Yooka’s head. You take them both across five different worlds collecting Pagies, which are the golden bounty used to unlock each new area.

Along the way, you’ll have to defeat oddball baddies and bosses that may burp and fart, using the unique abilities of both Yooka and Laylee. Yooka, for example, can roll up into a ball and use his tongue as a whip. Laylee, on the other hand, is able to fly through the air carrying Yooka and emit a sonar blast.

You can see these abilities in use in the video above, which also showcases the Jungle World from the game that, like the rest of the worlds, is designed to feel like a playground full of a variety of challenges. There are even arcade machines to find with old-school games to beat on them to unlock a Pagie.

Now that the base goal of £175,000 has been reached on the Kickstarter then Yooka-Laylee will be launched on PC with console versions coming afterwards. However, reaching the £1,000,000 stretch goal means that the team can bring the game to all platforms on the same day.

There are also a number of other features to be added with the lower stretch goals such as a co-op, local versus multiplayer for up to four players, and extra boss battles, mechanics, and NPCs.
