Xtra Mile Games has launched the Kickstarter for its sprite-based beat ‘em up Night City Assault. The team is looking for AUD $26,290 in funding see the game’s development through to completion. There’s a playable demo for Windows and Mac you can download right here.

Let’s get the obvious out of the way. Night City Assault is inspired by Streets of Rage. Surprise, surprise. It’s meant to appeal to fans of those retro beat ‘em ups but adds an original story-based campaign, RPG-like character progression, extensive movesets, and “Metroidvania-style exploration.”

It’s set in the 1980s and has you playing as either detective Roy Silver or officer Cindy Chan (or both if you’re rocking co-op with someone) as they find themselves stranded in a city overrun by a criminals. These thugs are part of a violent syndicate ran by a a mysterious leader called Viper.

The plan is to finish Night City Assault and get it out for Windows, Mac, and Linux around November 2016. But the Kickstarter does have stretch goals for an Xbox One and PlayStation 4 version, as well as full voice acting.
