My Nintendo’s first exclusive reward is a pretty great one. People with 1,000 Platinum Coins, earned either through playing Miitomo or completing other My Nintendo missions, can put that toward My Nintendo Picross: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Nintendo 3DS. Those who’ve been playing Pokémon Picross or any other Jupiter Picross know what to expect. Each puzzle has a The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess theme to it, but there’s more to this one that makes it special.
To start, Midna is the hostess. She takes you through the tutorial. Though, if this isn’t your first time knocking out nonograms, you can click the icon with her head on it on the touch screen to skip these initial puzzles. Her personality is spot on, her “voice” is the same, and she’s basically fulfilling the same sort of role she did in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. It works really well and helps with the immersion.
As does My Nintendo Picross: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess’ special effects. When you mark a square, it sounds like Link’s sword is slashing through grass. When you complete a puzzle, you hear the fanfare that would normally signal Link acquiring a reward. Micross sounds like you’re cutting into stone, in a nod to Mario’s Super Picross. The sounds help make the game. Which makes sense, because all of the background music is taken from Twilight Princess too.
And of course every puzzle is related to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Sadly, the Mega Picross ones are repeats of puzzles you’ll already complete in the standard Picross section. Also, the Miiverse stamps sometimes don’t work out too well. You really need to see some finished images in color to pick out what they’re representing. Still, it is a nice bonus.
Really, the only real flaw to My Nintendo Picross: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is really more of an odd quirk. Typically, the stylus controls for a Jupiter Picross game involve holding up or down on the D-pad while drawing on the touch screen to fill in a square or mark it with an “x.” Here, it’s a toggle switch. It takes some time to adjust to, especially if you’re a Picross-aficionado, because muscle memory takes over. I’d prefer the old method, but I’ve gotten used to the new controls as I play.
But really, the main thing anyone interested in My Nintendo Picross: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess should know is that the game is absolutely worth the 1,000 Platinum Coins it costs to acquire it. This is a well thought out game and, while it’s no Club Nintendo Picross, it’s absolutely worth playing.
