Henshin, Inc. has announced that it has optioned and is now working on an animated feature film based on Bandai Namco’s Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, which originally released in Japan in 1997. The game spawned over a half dozen titles which followed the adventure of Klonoa, an anthropomorphic cat-like “dream traveler” and his friends as they traveled through dreams to offer help wherever it was needed.

The to-be-titled movie will feature a completely new story set in the same universe as the series’ original game. It is being produced by Henshin’s Rob Pereyda and written by Hitoshi Ariga, who will also co-produce and lead character design, whose past work includes character design for Pokémon as well as authoring manga adaptations of Mega Man and The Big O.

Additionally, Henshin’s Rob Pereyda had this to say about working on the upcoming Klonoa film:

“Klonoa is a late 90s video game icon, representing that special sense of hope and adventure we all collectively once had. We are honored to be entrusted by Bandai Namco with this franchise, and will work hard to do justice to the characters.”
