Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s Backstory Discovered By Fans Using Hylian Language

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild begins with Link waking up from a 100-year slumber, but nothing was known about the events leading up to the beginning of the game. However, now thanks to some diligent fans, we now know more about Breath of the Wild’s backstory. [Thanks, ZeldaInformer.]

Last week during a Nintendo Treehouse Live stream, Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime shared a look at a map included in the limited editions of the game. The back of map, incidentally, features a tapestry detailed with Hylian/Sheikah language. Fans have now decoded the text which tells of the events prior to the beginning of the game, which you can check out below.

“Hylians pass stories of a destined time long past, where multiple races lived and worked together in harmony. The Sheikah Tribe’s blue aura breathed through the land, and this mutual prosperity continued, until a cataclysmic disaster struck. The hero and the princess attempted in vain to seal the terror, which became known as the Calamity Ganon. Divine Beasts awoke from four directions, and deployed a mechanical army which made the king and his people fearful. They fractured Ganon’s power and sealed him… But the Sheikah were banished from the land ever since.”

In addition, you can watch the following video from YouTube user Zeltik as he goes into the transcribing process which involved first translating the Sheikah language into Japanese and then into English.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will release for the Wii U and the Nintendo Switch on March 3rd.
