During Nintendo’s E3 Treehouse live stream, it confirmed that there is two player cooperative multiplayer in Super Mario Odyssey. While one person will control Mario, the other will control his sentient hat, Cappy. The Cappy player is essentially invisible and able to aid the person playing as Mario.

When someone is controlling Cappy in Super Mario Odyssey, they can look around and investigate new areas. This might allow them to collect an item. It also lets them attack enemies, protecting the person playing as Mario. While that person is flying around, the other one can still be controlling Mario as usual as he run and jumps around the vicinity. Supposedly both players can adjust the camera.

One segment of the demonstration showed how helpful having someone controlling Cappy can be. Mario and Cappy wall-jumped between two pillars to reach the top. The person controlling Cappy was able to fly out a bit past the final platform to see one just out of view with a pile of gold on it. They were then able to perfectly position Cappy so Mario could then jump on him to reach that platform and the collection of coins.

Super Mario Odyssey will come to the Nintendo Switch on October 27, 2017.
