Square Enix And Kadokawa’s Mobile RPG Akashic Re:cords To Terminate Service On August 31

Square Enix teamed up with Kadokawa Games for a new smartphone RPG last year called Akashic Re:cords, and the company announced that it’ll be terminating its service on August 31 in Japan.

Akashic Re:cords sounded pretty promising when it was revealed last year with a story by Record of Lodoss War writer Ryo Mizuno that has everything from signing a contract with the devil to smartphone summoning partners in real-time battles and multiplayer co-op.

However, Square Enix states in their press release that it would be difficult to continue providing satisfactory service for its customers, so it was decided to terminate service of the smartphone RPG on August 31, 2017. The micro-transaction “Souls” won’t be available for purchase as of today.

The company also notes that Akashic Re:cords’ currently ongoing novel and manga will continue carrying on despite the game being discontinued.

With the announcement of Akashic Re:cords’ termination, that makes it 11 of 17 free-to-play smartphone games released by Square Enix in 2016 have already ended service.

Akashic Re:cords launched in Japan on November 10, 2016 for iPhone and Android.
