Key developers of Dragon Quest XI recently got together to talk about the time they made a bit of Dragon Quest III on PS4 using Unreal Engine 4 to help out in the making of the upcoming RPG. [Thanks, Ryokutya2089.]

In the interview with series creator Yuji Horii, producer Yosuke Saito, and director Takeshi Uchikawa, Horii revealed that while developing Dragon Quest XI on PS4 they tried making a part of Dragon Quest III using Unreal Engine 4.

What they actually made was the content where you find the castle town Aliahan, the starting location of Dragon Quest III. While producer Yosuke Saito said that they didn’t make the whole thing, Horii explained that they were able to take a serious look at Dragon Quest III while making Dragon Quest XI.

Director Uchikawa added that it was thanks to this Dragon Quest III that they were able to communicate the likeness of Dragon Quest with the staff. They were able to see conversations and the people of Dragon Quest III, considered one of the classics that defined the earlier years of the popular RPG series in Japan.

Yosuke Saito said that he hopes to get an opportunity to show everyone the Dragon Quest III they made using Unreal Engine 4.

Dragon Quest XI releases in Japan on July 29, 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS. The game is also in development for Nintendo Switch.
